Global #gtchat Powered by TAGT is a weekly chat on Twitter that takes place on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT and 5 p.m. PT in the U.S. For one hour, parents, educators, advocates and experts in the field of gifted and talented gather to share resources, links, authentic life experiences and insights about gifted issues.
Hey #gtchat! @ColinESeale tweeting for #thinkLaw, where we help educators teach #CriticalThinking using real-life legal cases. Excited to be here tweeting from #Phoenix, and cannot wait to host next week's chat on building #empathy through critical thinking!
Please remember to use the #gtchat hashtag to participate in the conversation. This will make sure that other chat participants see your tweets. #gtchat
Our first question is coming up; let’s get ready to chat! Please preface your responses with A1) Excited to collaborate and share ideas with you today about entrepreneurship, gifted kids and their parents! #gtchat
A1) It would be great to introduce gifted children to enterpreneurship if they have ideas for inventions or an interest in becoming an enterpreneur #gtchat
A1: #Gifted students who aren't pushed to be creators, innovators or otherwise motivated in academic spaces too often find other, not-so-awesome places to take these gifts #gtchat
A1) Entrepreneurship encourages students to be responsible for a large scale project, which requires determination, perseverance, and self-confidence #gtchat
A1) Never too early... but are we defining it more broadly than a business entrepreneurship? Creating a public service (without compensation) too? #gtchat
Also think it's great to start as early as possible to debunk the idea that entrepreneurship is some out-of-reach ideal rather than something students can do every single day in some capacity. #gtchat

Was thinking the same thing @JeremyDBond. Met someone who started a social enterprise feeding the homeless with food restaurants were throwing away every night. Public sector innovators are more important than ever! #gtchat!
A1) Some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs showed signs of interest when they were considered too young, but through early failures/successes were able to not only reach but exceed what others thought was their full potential. #gtchat

It can also start out as something simple like selling Girl Scout cookies - experiences like that can create a desire for more and help establish ideas and confidence #gtchat

A2) Skills that can benefit gifted kids may be some they already possess, but are not appreciated; such as following the path less traveled, acceptance of risk, thinking outside the box. #gtchat
Q2: having original ideas about how to some problems- GT Ss may have a different perspective or increased ability to understand the wider picture #gtchat
Q2) Entrepreneurs are usually strong leaders, risk takers, and creative thinkers! All of which are often characteristics of our gifted population! We need to guide and channel our students interests and ideas that might help them to be future entrepreneurs!😊 #gtchat
Humility is key. Understanding that people you intend to serve/impact with your innovation are the most important experts >>> having a really cool idea. Teaching students the humility to truly listen to user feedback in the #designthinking process is a huge gain for Ss #gtchat
And admittedly, when we're talking kids, I feel like service-oriented entrepreneurship focuses on the right values early: Service rather than reward (and the reward is the service itself). #gtchat

A3) The age old question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” can be enhanced by asking, “What are your goals? What do you hope to accomplish? What do you imagine your life will be in 5, 10 years?” #gtchat
A3) Where do you feel you can make a difference? What is a goal you have? What skills do you have that you could apply in a situation? But also, focus on ambition and making something happen, rather than end result of being successful #gtchat
A3) What information and resources would you need for your project and where would you get them? What would the most effective method be? How will this benefit others? #gtchat
Same as every other kid but also the realisation of acceptable conversation and understanding of what potential employers and clients want. Sometimes more difficult for a gifted person to convey. #gtchat
A3) Fostering entrepreneurship can be as simple as asking kids “what are your dreams?”, “what do you aspire to?”, “what would your ideal world look like?” #gtchat
A3) What information and resources would you need for your project and where would you get them? What would the most effective method be? How will this benefit others? #gtchat
Also promoting, that while collaboration and communication is essential, that ultimately their entrepreneurship will be the result of their effort and responsibility #gtchat
A4) We teach by helping them think about all of the mechanics involved, structuring their thinking rather than thinking for them. How will this work? What is your responsibility? How will you collaborate with others? #gtchat
A4) Entrepreneurship must be coupled with a deep understanding of economics, an openness to collaboration (virtual/irl), and an innovative mindset. #gtchat
Funny how we've traditionally asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Why just the future? And why imply the focus on career? As if you're supposed to pick from a series of paths that somebody else has set out. #gtchat

We can also teach by helping them continue to have an open mind, and be open to innovation and new ideas as they go throughout the process. Design/engineering a solution to a problem is a never-ending process #gtchat
Yeah, I'm forty two and I always had chores as a child. #GTChat, I instilled it in my children when they were younger and insisted on certain things when they were children as well.
You are so right about chores @Okemaforever! Learning routines and thinking about quicker/better ways to do them is a huge innovation-starter. Is that what you were referring to?

A4) We teach by helping them think about all of the mechanics involved, structuring their thinking rather than thinking for them. How will this work? What is your responsibility? How will you collaborate with others? #gtchat
This is crucial. Hard to build authentic spaces for new ideas when the learning environment itself is very constrained and not at all flexible! #gtchat
A4. Link them to real world entrepreneurs. Help them create connections to people who are experts in what they're interested in to help them see the possibilities. #gtchat
A5) Entrepreneurship education must incorporate a basic understanding of social responsibility early in the process; learning/understanding what real consequences of one’s actions can have on society. #gtchat
A5. The Design Thinking process has a strong 'Empathy' component. It's one of its key stages which is why I think I love it so much. It's all about people as well as the process. #gtchat

A5) It's all in how you frame it--not for personal achievement but for addressing problems. Have them approach entrepreneurship by answering certain questions: Whom does it help? What will it change? #gtchat
A5) We can help our students realize that their actions have consequences - whether positive or negative, and that when we act responsibly, we maximize the positive results of our actions #gtchat
A5) By creating authentic learning environments, students can realize how their actions can affect the world around them; that they can make a difference in the world for good. #gtchat
A6) Parents can have a profound effect on their child’s entrepreneurial spirit by responding to failure in a positive manner and encouraging resilience/determination to overcome adversity by trying again. #gtchat
A6) Expose them to a broad range of activities and places -- performing arts, "Minds in Motion," museums -- to expand their world. Model volunteering, including as a family, and take leadership roles in the community. Inform and discuss local and global issues. #gtchat
A6. Ts need to harness the skills of their parent community and collaborate to share the skills with the Ss. Develop partnerships to show what's possible. #gtchat
A6) Parents can support their child’s interests by seeking out mentors for them, exposing them to new experiences that match their interests, guiding their children toward resources that can inspire them to be successful. #gtchat
a6) Parents can also share their direct & indirect experiences with entrepreneurship. The way MBA schools teach it with case studies might be helpful, too.#gtchat

Our next chat will be on Thursday March 8th at 8E/7C/6M/5P US and Friday 9th March at 2 PM NZDT/Noon AEDT/1AM UK. Our guests will be members of the @thinkLaw team! #gtchat
Absolutely! The silo model needs to be gone. Collaboration is key otherwise what are we here for? It sends the wrong message. We need to break down the walls - for everyone's sakes. #gtchat
