#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
#K12ArtChat Welcome chatters! I am excited to be here tonight and I am looking forward to a fun and engaging conversation. Take a minute or two to introduce yourself. :)
Hey #K12ArtChat I’m Tim, HS #art & #media teacher from NY, celebrating the last hours of my summer break w/ a road trip to #Montréal! School starts next week!
a1- I attempt to strike a balance between the 2. I encourage experimentation and play while fostering skill building. I find that both assist the effective communication of student voice #k12artchat
#K12ArtChat A1: I'm an instructional coach now but when I had a classroom, I tried to include elements of play regardless of the age level. I also include play when I work with Ts... partially why I am #LEGOMasterEducators
A1 my classroom is a mix of play and tasks. At our Ele Art Pd we wrote questions on beach balls to use to during class critiques or when looking at art together. Mixing it up! #k12artchat
I think my classroom has an atmosphere of fun & is also orientated towards mastery, the loose, fun tone allows for creative risk-taking & innovation! #k12artchat
Don from SoCal. Almost a week in and off to a great start with our community/diversity paper quilt inspired by “block party” by Corinne Sovey #K12ArtChat
A1: if I had a classroom now (with everything I’ve learned) I would hope it would be a bit of both but I have to say my high school art room was more about mastery #k12artchat
A1: I think it is a mixing of the two, mastery through playing! #K12ArtChat Learning abt important Photography vocab. while editing/creating own photos! (explaining why they chose it)
#K12ArtChat I've done something similar with a spinner. Random chance questions to assist with questioning or conversations. What kinds of Qs did you put?
A2: I’m@always thinking of ways to include more fun into the intro and reflection portions of my curriculum. I ask my students to help come up with ideas! #k12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood. Fred Rogers
A2 to shift towards infusing more elements of play, I think you have to really focus on the process. Play w/concept, tool, idea, question. Be open to seeing where ss take it not where you want them to go. #K12ArtChat
A2- I have found digital art experiments are great opps to incorporate play and trying things out with less fear of failure for my students. Hitting delete or undo can be so freeing for some students #k12artchat
A2- try a playful routine like genius hour, play based warmups, or free play time for a set part of your week to start seeing how capable students can be during play! #K12ArtChat
A1: A balance of both - art is playful & the best learning can come from play - even in HS! I always try to embed a sense of wonder and excitement in all we do. There is a way to value mastery while allowing students the opportunity to play, experiment & collaborate #k12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat We are going to get to S voice and choice later in the chat, but you bring up an excellent point. Getting S input is a great way to encourage their voice and allow for their choice.
Everything relating to elements and principles with simple from find the primary colors to where do you find symmetry. I colleague saw it on instagram so we all made them together . #k12artchat
It helps to read all of the question before you answer it! (favorite activities) A little video games, little exercise, a little making. #K12ArtChat My current journal cover.
A2: allowing play, self-guided discoveries and experimenting (especially in the art room) can help lead to and even strengthen mastery. I find my classroom oriented to both...main tip that comes to mind...TRUST your students #k12ArtChat
A3- Well I love my paint easel, block center, science center, etc... I'd love a light table and more large scale materials for my kiddos. #weplayallthetime#K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat I just repurposed cardboard and made it into a Homecoming Mum just to see if it could be done. I love random recycled materials. May be why my garage is full of random stuff.
A4 I think play is child driven, while work is teacher driven. I like to think play leads to intentional creation & understanding. Play is the bridge between ss—academic/school content—life. #k12ArtChat
A4: I have my students help to develop lessons. I give the the objective and we discuss possible ways of meeting that objective. I guess I need some help with making this more playful... #k12ArtChat
#k12artchat A3 I am a ChoiceArt educator it is a student directed program and I utilize peer mentors to encourage expanded learning. I would love a smart tv with screencasting abilities.
#K12ArtChat That is an excellent point. Change is often gradual and it doesn't have to be all at once. Try changing small things and moving toward the larger ones.
#K12ArtChat The .@iste four C's are integral to children's learning and are integral to #ArtsEd Consider how these play a role in your classroom and respond.
My classrooms filled with #art, #toys, & accessible #materials & I’ll often work alongside students all of which helps give them license to #create & express themselves without fear! #K12ArtChat
A3: easily accessible materials for students to freely use...modeling clay, play-doh, creativity exercises and built in time to just explore! #k12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat How could you make this more interactive? Engaging? Fun? Creative? Could you draw ideas out of a hat and see if they can be applied to the objective for example? Allow for alternatives or non-traditional ways to show mastery?
#K12ArtChat I know I'm blessed in that the vocation (work) that I do is quite often play. I get the opportunity to explore, to create, and to build without the stigma attached.
A4 TAb, partial Tab, Steam, maker spaces and lots of choice allows students to play and explore with their designs, with materials and less focus on bulletin board Art Work. #k12artchat
A4: My students were totally enamored with Blues Clues today... They gave me a list of there favorite shows from their childhood. Every now & then I show them short (art related) clips before dismissal. #k12ArtChat
A3: beach balls, games, iPads, dance/movement, silly songs, stations to explore with different materials #K12ArtChat 👂🏻 for FUN ideas.... there can always be more fun, right⁉️
A4- Play by its definition is something the student freely chooses. I see quiet kids open up, wild kids settle into challenging tasks, and everyone in between become more open to ideas and concepts during free play! #K12ArtChat
A3 choice, choice and more choice. When Ss get to experiment with mediums I teach less and they learn more. My As most successful projects involve so much choice and decision making that is student centered art making. #k12artchat
A4: I have a drawer with ping pong paddles, dice, cards, light up bouncy balls... Sometimes I just need to pull a trick out of the bag to lighten the mood or grab attention! #k12ArtChat
#K12artchat A4 #Choiceart is student directed learning, artistic targets, artist proposals with documentation of their learning. Emphasis on the process.
#K12ArtChat Now it's time to "show what YOU know" and demonstrate your mastery. Go and find an example (or two... or three or four... or however many) to share.
#K12ArtChat Yes! For my littles, especially, play is where they can work slightly above their own level. So many lightbulb moments as they try out things through play!
A4 concepts in all academic areas require a foundation of skills essential to play. Risk taking, courage, creativity, imagination, collaboration, critical thinking, etc. providing time to play w/ numbers, words, etc. builds confidence to support more complex thinking #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat I want to thank you for having me as a guest moderator tonight. It's been an AMAZING chat! Let's wrap up. What is your one big #Takeaway from tonight's chat?
A6- I'm always working to create deeper play experiences in my dramatic play area of the classroom. I'm also focusing this year on learning, i.e. play experiences, outside with my littles. #K12ArtChat#thisyearisgoingtobefun
#K12ArtChat Now it's time to "show what YOU know" and demonstrate your mastery. Go and find an example (or two... or three or four... or however many) to share.
A5: You have to build Creativity & Critical Thinking. WE started the year w/ 30 circle challenge(Think past the norm) did a few then walked around the class to see others, leading to new ideas. #K12ArtChat
#K12artchat “take-away” Let the process lead with exploration and scaffolding their learning based on the choices students identify with artist Proposals.
A3 - better late than never! Our tools are our STUDIO days! A random day when kids come in and just get to explore and play and create and make their marks! It’s magical!! #k12artchat#togetherweARTbetter
A6: My Ss are showing their understanding through their own photo they take, edit, then create slides abt Elements & Priniciples. & explain how it relates to their image! #K12ArtChat Here was one of my examples.
