#BadgeChat was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChat was born.
I'm Noah in Denver. Passionate advocate for recognizing learning and achievement in order to increase equity and access. Proud collaborator of @aurorak12 and others. Lead servant of #BadgeSummit#badgechat
Sarah from Worcester, MA - Manager of Digital Learning. Getting ready to begin a principal’s digital leadership cohort next week so this chat is timely #BadgeChat
A1: Principals applying for jobs in new schools/districts have their resume and maybe news clippings. Digital Badge Credentials could help them better communicate their skills sets to the communities they hope to serve #badgechat
A1: Our recent research study found that the two most important features of badge based #teacherPD for administrators were #visibility and #trackability. Specifically, badges make it easier for admins to view the progress of PD activities. #badgechat
Gregg from Modesto, CA. Project Coord., Ed Tech at our COE/ Jumping in to the #badgechat today. If only for a few minutes! Always drop in with the purpose to learn more about what others are doing with digital badging!
A1: School principals have a really hard, often thankless job. Badges give learning communities a way to meaningfully notice and name the amazing work principals do each day #badgechat
A1: School/district leaders do a bunch of learning & badges can make that visible by clearly describing what they have achieved and even share evidence of what they did to earn the badge. #BadgeChat#GrowthMindset#EdLeaders
Couldn’t agree more. The badges show off the credentials of principals, and as a district you can look at them and better understand if they meet the match they are looking for . #BadgeChat
A1: Badges can serve school and district level admins the same as educators. Task and criteria are the same, just the evidence will be applicable to serve their need. The learning is still going on. #badgechat
YESYESYES!!! I'm sure @Benjaroome will agree that the evidence component here is crucial! Sharing what principals achieve doesn't have to be limited to putting something on their own kitchen fridge #BadgeChat
Love this visual. And this also points to mindset (like what @RichEdTech alluded to) of it being not just about measuring progress but also a helpful way to set goals as well #BadgeChat
A2: Culture starts with the Leader so how about data points that speak to that? For ex:
“90% Student + Staff Attendance”
“90% Staff Retention”
#badgechat
Hi everyone, my name is Amber and this is my first time participating in a Twitter Chat. I'm doing this for my Educational Media Theory Class!! #BadgeChat#uwpsoe2010
Love this idea. This will be especially powerful when state education boards finally start to get more heavily on board with #digitalcredentialing. #badgechat
Welcome Natalie! Some helpful resources at https://t.co/9gAmCi5nlc
In short, think of it as ways to credential learning and achievement in verifiable ways (attaching evidence) and giving the badge earner the ability to own and share their badges #badgechat
A3: Instructional Leadership is such a valuable skill for principals...what if we could Badge things like a high success rate of helping Ts on improvement plans, you know, improve? #badgechat
Q3: What might happen if we had leaders choose their representation of learning tied to a project or initiative that is related to student outcomes so that Ss, Ts and parents see the connection between admin work and helping all students achieve? #BadgeChat
Q3: What might happen if we had leaders choose their representation of learning tied to a project or initiative that is related to student outcomes so that Ss, Ts and parents see the connection between admin work and helping all students achieve? #BadgeChat
YES!! I love this...look at school vision and plans to identify the skills that are being expected of students and then credential principals for leading student acquisition of those skills!!!! #BadgeChat
Badges would be a great way to share #learningevidence in this context as well. Could this be measured informally through teacher testimonials? That would be a great way to celebrate awesome leaders. #badgechat
Q4: What stakeholders might be included in the consumer/audience side of Admin Badges? In other words, who cares and what value do they get from the Badges? #badgechat
A4: School Staff, who gains understanding of their leader's assets. Hiring committees, who get richer narrative of who principal candidates really are. Central admin, who begin to curate district-wide heat maps of capacities #badgechat
A4: I think every community can benefit from a celebration of leaders who are doing positive things. Especially in school contexts, great leadership often goes unrecognized by the community it is serving. #badgechat
As folks sneak in answers to that last question, a huge thanks to all who joined. Especially grateful for the bold pre-service presence who fearlessly jumped right in. Feeling bad that we're not badging that tonight...unless @Benjaroome has something to say about it... #badgechat

I really love that last idea of district-wide heat maps. This could be a great way to inspire lateral learning between district admins, who can then proliferate their strengths amongst other leaders in the community. #badgechat

Yes sir! ANDDDDDDDD, they could identify others who have strengths that will cover blind spots in forming AP teams...they may be able to find the ying to their yang in ways that are blind to race, gender and last name #BadgeChat
That's a great idea @SenorG! I would love it if we could become a place for preservice teachers to earn a badge for their contributions to the conversation. How about it preservice folks? Would a #badgechat badge be something you'd like to earn for your tweets?
District-wide heat maps, similar to how @IBM utilizes their internal badges to create "unicorn" collaboration/work teams. This would be so productive in education...think how awesome the collabs would be! #BadgeChat
Thanks to all who joined this week's awesome #badgechat! Time flew!
So great to see a number of old friends stop by. As always, huge props to the regular Badge Chatters and to the lurkers, we appreciate and value your own form of active engagement
Have a Badge worthy week yall!
Nice! Calling out the families and students as stakeholders who would be on the "consumer" side of principal badges is important. How might you imagine those constituents coming around to caring? #BadgeChat
We stopped badging folks since the rebrand from #badgechatK12 to #badgechat. Might be time for a new group. LMK if there are other groups or folks we'd like to recognize. Maybe one for folks have been a session leader?
Love how this pre-service Teacher simplifies and articulates an abstract idea that just plain makes sense in helping to improve how we place school leaders. Well done @ARodenbeck_edu! #BadgeChat

Culture created by school or district leader modeling and/or participating in badging. Changes in the way the Leader facilitates PD, would there be a change in practice?

He's so dreamy.
I've actually met several IBM employees unrelated to Badging work in the last year and 100% who I asked about it said they know about it and it's the real deal, not just the David hype machine overselling it. Very cool to validate that it's for real. #BadgeChat

@LesVoigt, @Benjaroome, @IBM, @David_Leaser
Great follow up ? By showing your families,/students, & stakeholders they matter by working to achieve the badges in areas that they truly care about. What proficiencies of a leader matter to them

A2: One night include actual artifacts, blog posts, website updates, interaction with staff or students, maybe even a voice response to a specific topic that matters to the community, #BadgeChat
Thanks for joining! Seeing pre-service folks like y'all inspires us about the future of the profession.
You and your classmates are always welcome, and if anyone does a project with Badges, lean on this community for authentic audience and to amplify your voice:) #BadgeChat
