A1: In the language classroom, we focus on interculturality and understanding other cultures, as well as our own. Teaching Ss soft skills like empathy, understanding and acceptance could easily tie into the UN global goals. #NoVAedchat
How about if we ask our students to work on solutions to these issues? In the process, they would likely learn a lot of what we have in the standard curriculum. #NoVAedChat
A1: I work in a school with over half the school is ELL, speaks a different language, have many different cultures, etc. It's kind of like the United Nations front lobby has all the different flags our students represent though our school culture is one of inclusion. #novaedchat
It's true. It's what employers want too, and it's something they can't teach in a week or two of training. We need to make that goal number one in k-12. #NoVAedChat

This is one of the things I love about teaching in such a diverse school! We have amazing conversations on cultural comparisons without even needing to frontload the research!! #NoVAedchat
I could not agree with you more, Kendra. I read an article where Google mentioned that soft skills were almost more important than job skills when they were looking at hiring employees. #NoVAedchat
A2. I love the idea of being really open-ended about learning at the end of the year. Give kids the reigns and see what happens. There are so many great topics in the #UNGlobalGoals- there's something for everyone! #NoVAedChat

It is. A few months ago I went to the National Title 1 conference and one of the speakers said that its not about treating the students differently because of their situation. It is about challenging them just like you do all your students in spite of their situation. #NoVAedChat
A2: My Ss will be working on more collaborative projects with our partner school in France. Ss will examine a variety of topics and use @Flipgrid to share their thoughts #NoVAedchat#FlipgridFever
A2: AP Ss choose their own project and must speak to how their work relates to world cultures and course topics. Lower levels explore global issues through reading and listening activities #NoVAedchat
A2: I find that this is a struggle with some Ts. When I was in the classroom I used this time to allow Ss to explore things they wanted to learn about. Though I find Ts, not all their fault, are focused on the state exams since they go right up to the last week. #novaedchat
Q3: Global connections are often a goal for districts and then privacy concerns interfere. How have you found connections with the world beyond your school and classroom while maintaining student privacy? #NoVAedChat
A3: I have reached out using Skype and Google Meet. A great tool is #safarilive where the Ss get to talk with safari guides in South Africa live. The Ss never have direct contact. I have them ask questions through Google Classroom and then I send the questions through #novaedchat
A3: I have a partner school through an MOU with the VDOE and the @academie_reims. My district is very supportive of the collaboration between the French and American Ss. #novaedchat
So we have to use apps that are approved. AND I think we have to be cautious about student rights and privacy. Challenge becomes balancing those apps that do care about privacy and those that don't. End game: Read the privacy agreement! #novaedchat
A3 part2: We use @GoogleForEdu tools, @padlet, and @Flipgrid to collaborate and share work. The Ss even communicate with each other outside of class through social media. The impact of the partnership on my Ss has been amazing! #novaedchat
Oh it is amazing the kids ask questions and the guides answer them as they are driving and/or walking through the bush. It really helps make connections. We also have some Ss from that area and to see their faces light up is an amazing feeling. #novaedchat
We have had whole classes use google hangouts to connect with other classes (in France, in South Africa, etc) and discuss issues/build perspective. Not individual accounts, but teacher accounts. #NoVAedchat

Absolutely! My Ss and I presented at a school board meeting and that had such an impact on the board members. They actually came and participated in a Google Hangout with my class. It was awesome! #NoVAedChat
Each week I seem to pick up on something new. Last week POG end card lessons, this week @Flipgrid applications. A lot of new concepts out there! #NoVAedChat

A4: I just starting to work with a T this week to introduce @Flipgrid to her 1st graders. Work with my admin to get a school license for next year because I see the importance of it and how it could help our population of Ss. #novaedchat
A5: I wish I had space & money to create an innovative learningspace for the Ss where they could explore, test, & then see their work be successful. Just got a grant from the county to start this process, but still looking for more Makerspace tools. Want a 3D printer #novaedchat

A5: I was able to get a grant for Chromebooks in my classroom so my Ss can collaborate with our partner school on a daily basis. I also received another grant for Google cardboard viewers. Ultimately, I would love to have resources to be able to do an exchange trip. #novaedchat
