A5: my district made me feel appreciated during the Teacher Walkout. My community/district stood behind the teachers of Norman 100% and provided breakfast/snacks and came and walked with us. I cried many days bc of it..okay I cried every single day of the walkout. #Oklaed
I think a good way to show children that they are appreciated is by reminding them that they are more than just another number. I think it’s good to take the time to really listen to them and connect on a personal level. Show and tell style. #oklaed
A6 - Show up refreshed, with a smile, and ready to go! Give them a high five, a hug, or whatever and just a reminder that I am proud of them and love them - some of mine will have gone 9 days w/o hearing that (not totally true - I sent a remind over break telling them😀). #oklaed
A6 Don't hit them with the "What did you do during break?" essay. May be good intentioned, but for those that are in need or had stressful holiday it only adds to the stress/trauma #oklaed
A6: We can remember that their sleep schedules have been off kilter for a while... And give them an opportunity to talk (or not) about their holiday. #oklaed
A6 #oklaed Greet them at the door. Smile. Talk to them. Ask them how they are. Find out what is going on with them.
Also, don't assume that their break was anything like yours.
A6: "Nexting" is a way of looking forward to "what's next". When students arrive show sincere gratitude to see them again, & share eagerness to see what they will do next, share next, contribute next. Each S has an irreplaceable contribution to the learning of everyone. #oklaed
A6) Continue to foster those relationships with the Ss. We as Ts generally know by this point what their home life is like. If we can be that positive impact in their day, we should be it. #oklaed
A6) taking the time to listen, value their voice, give them ownership of their learning, & provide space to learn about and explore their instersecting identities #oklaed
A6- Remember that the most important thing we do is build relationships. Take a few minutes to reconnect with your students and listen to them. #OklaEd
I honestly feel bad for not writing a piece about how supported NPS was during the walkout. We would show up at our school each morning to students and their families with signs and food/drinks...and now I'm going to cry thinking about it. #Oklaed it was so powerful!
A6: Start the day with a greeting and a smile! Check in with them throughout the day, notice when they need a break. Allow them to be people as we practice & reinforce procedures!! #oklaed
A6: Give hugs, smiles, let them have time to talk to each other, and welcome them as they walk into the building. Letting them know that I have missed them and thought about them over the break. #oklaed
A5: @oueducation continues to make me feel appreciated - All of my professors go above and beyond to support us in finding where we fit and where we flourish. #oklaed
A6) 5 days without seeing my students and I’m having withdrawals. My students are awesome. We can let them know how happy we are to see them and give them time to talk about their break #oklaed
A5: Moving me mid year, a personal letter describing the move, and a phone call in between to acknowledge the difficulties of the situation while reinforcing their belief in me. I don’t back down from challenges and this made it easier. #oklaed
@Alex_Faith405 I’m so happy to have met you this semester! I have really enjoyed talking to a fellow lover of social studies. And bouncing ideas off of you for creating lesson plans had helped me so much! ☺️❤️ #oklaed

A6: In my opinion, one of the best ways to make students feel appreciated is by continuing to remind them you care. Listening to them and asking them questions when they tell you about their break, or just things in general, can brighten their day instantly. #oklaed
A6) Give them a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on or a smile and a hug or high five. We have mourned together and celebrated together over the past week. A roller coaster of emotions that we all have to be ready to process through together! #oklaed
#oklaed A6) Instead of letting the pressure of the end of the semester show, keep students relaxed and let them know they are always the priority. Incorporate different cultures into your activities as winter quickly approaches!
A6 Enjoy their stories about all the food & family but be cautious about over doing it for some it wasn't so good. For them seek them out for a little extra attention this week #OklaEd
A6: for some Ss it's as simple as a smile, a hello, a how was your break? For others it's more... it's a conversation, it's space, it's gradual... it's our job to know the difference. See that's what Ts do. We know our Ss. #oklaed
A6b: Also calmly re-establish anchoring routines. (not in an authoritative way) Remember Mr. Rogers changing his shoes and sweater at the beginning of the show? Routines bring about security and stability which allows reconnecting through relationships. #oklaed
A6) I can smile at them and tell them I’m glad to be at school; if it weren’t for parents sending them to school, their most prized possessions, I wouldn’t have a job; I can have a fun yet substantial lesson. #oklaed
A6) Be patient and understanding. Not everyone had the same experience over the long "holiday" weekend. Remember to stay humble and remind them they were missed. #oklaed
A5) I feel appreciated tonight - this very second! My board is incredibly supportive - our staff shows so much respect and support always - I am truly so blessed!! #Oklaed
Unfortunately I don’t have much to say about this. I have not been in a position to make a comment about this question yet but I’m eager to read the responses! #oklaed
Slow down this week and give them attention. Smiles, appropriate touch, time for them to talk.... We have lots to do but meeting their needs comes first. Don’t assume they had a good break or that they had enough to eat. #oklaed
A7 #oklaed Working on improving salaries and class sizes; finding opportunities for meaningful professional growth; minimizing administrative intrusion into their world.
We let the professionals know we think they're the experts. #MDPurpose
A7: My district is already a good place to work, so I don't think they have added anything new or different. When we lose someone, it is usually because we're small and bigger schools pay more - or because someone leaves. #oklaed
A7- They went above the raise the state offered which doesn’t suck! LOL! They have listened to Ts and added some pretty amazing PD this year also! I think people love PC!! #oklaed
A7: Our district does a great job of putting teachers first. They are the most important voice when it comes to our students! @grendelrick goes out of his way to let our teachers know how much they matter! #oklaed
A7 - our upper administraiton spends time in the buildings. They are there, they listen, and do everything they can to meet the needs of the staff. It amazes me in a district our size that @romines1969 and his team know so many of the staff by name and know about them. #OklaEd
A7) We gave returning bonuses to Ts and signing bonuses for critical shortage areas. Food is always good. An extra "jeans" day is also always appreciated. I try to tell my Ts regularly how much I appreciate them...use my words. :) #oklaed
JK— Well mine works every single day to narrow the gap and get well trained Ts in those classrooms. We want Ts equipped & supported across the state. Sometimes I have a hard time saying “No” to a school/district because I know everyone needs the training! #oklaEd
A7 Personally I am doing more walks of gratitude. Telling our people face to face how much what they do matters to our #comesoarwithus daily mission #OklaEd
I’m thankful that as a Black Male Educator I’m able to bring awareness to the issues Black boys in school districts across 🇺🇸are facing. My advocacy is changing how we educate children. #OklaEd#BMEsTalkhttps://t.co/2pUmyYfPn2
A7: Teacher appreciation dinners during Parent Teacher Conferences seemed to have lots of volunteers bringing food. Also, learned one district doubled the Teacher / Teaming / Planning time using flexible scheduling. Teachers feel valued when equipped with time to prepare. #oklaed
A7: In my role, I try to be accessible and present w/Ts. We have regular PD, we were able to replenish classroom materials, and we get into classrooms to assist and give quality feedback #oklaed
A7) we continue to find ways to be supportive - we got community partners for over 200 classrooms for $300+ in supplies, we did $250 in room money for each teacher for supplies. We always need to find ways to do more. A daycare is next on my list. #oklaed
A7: We actually lost teachers. My district has luncheons for the teachers to show that we are appreciated. Retention is going to be hard considering the competition from neighboring states and the rough nature of the job. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. #oklaed
It is so important to remind your students how much you care! During one of my field observations, I saw a teacher give out handwritten thank you cards to her students after thanksgiving, to let them know how thankful she was for each one of them. I loved this idea! ☺️ #oklaed
Abbie, I love your response to this question. It is so important to make sure our students know they are appreciated. It can be as simple as greeting them at the door. This video of a teacher greeting their students is my favorite. https://t.co/CPOc30OTFe#oklaed
A6 “don't assume that their break was anything like yours.” Amen, brother. As an S, my holidays never seemed to live up to others. Now I know that no one’s does but kids don’t know that. @grendelrick thx! #oklaed
New to the district...started vision team so Ts will have a voice. I am still learning my new district and have work to do in this area. Ts are EVERYTHING! #oklaed
With the #passingnotes podcast I try to encourage teachers and inform their practice through AMAZING educators who have got it goin' on in classrooms across #oklaed
Well I would tell them I missed them and I hope they all had a refreshing break. I would then ask them what their favorite part of the break was and I would respond genuinely, creating a dialogue. just show them they mattered and that I wasn’t just creating pleasantries.#oklaed
@DrTerriC@ckalinski I’m thankful for you guys because you are passionate about technology and teaching it. You also take time to get on the personal level with students and make us enjoy learning!
A7b) Need to find more time - more time for collaboration and time to do the work we need Ts to do and they want to do. Trying to be creative on this one! #oklaed
@ShawneeSup Are you planning a daycare for teachers' children? I had a teacher here in Norman say that it would be a great help to have a daycare situated around teachers' schedules, etc. #oklaed
A7) we continue to find ways to be supportive - we got community partners for over 200 classrooms for $300+ in supplies, we did $250 in room money for each teacher for supplies. We always need to find ways to do more. A daycare is next on my list. #oklaed
A7) I’ve already answered the first part in my previous answers. I believe retention is high in our district. I’ve been there 33 years, and I’m sure many would want retention to decrease!😉 Old teachers rock! #oklaed
One more comment on this one... @MidDelSchlFound does so much for our students and staff that I can't imagine not having them around. They are a perfect proxy for the support our community gives us! #oklaed#MDPurpose
A7) My district #cpsreds has done an amazing job showing us we are appreciated and valued. Now if #okleg can just continue to help out and show a bit of appreciation and value as well .... now THAT would be GREAT!!! #oklaed
A8: I'm going to thank the recently elected teachers @jacobrosecrants@hicks4ok bc their passion is so real they took it to the Capitol. I'm just trying to follow in their shoes on a local level. #Oklaed
A8: I personally would like to thank all of the Oklahoma educators who lead by example everyday, in the trenches, fighting the good fight. Teaching is hard! And I admire those who continue to fight everyday from support staff to teachers to administrators. Thank YOU! #oklaed
A7: Monetarily, reinstatement of department head stipends and more flexibility with discretionary stipends. Year round PD held at @NeaVikings for 0-3 and E cert teachers to ease the tension of taking certification tests #OklaEd
A8) My Ts in my bldg...I'm working on something for the holidays for them. They need to know how much I value them and how much they impact our Ss. #oklaed
A8 #oklaed I don't have a specific list, but we have 19 days of school until Christmas Break. I'm going to make a goal of thanking at least 100 people in person for what they do for our students. And I'll keep a list. #MDPurpose
#oklaed A7) According to self-determination theory, people need three social conditions to thrive: autonomy, relationships, and competence. We have to focus on all three to retain staff.
A8: I am thankful for all faculty and staff at #cpsreds Every position is important to ensure needs are met, or we wouldn’t have them. I am also giving a shout out to the #osde they have been on point this year! #oklaed
A8 Without question, I hope to get the chance to thank Supt. Joy Hofmeister @joy4ok for taking the heat, rising to the challenge, & doing all she can for #oklaed. Few can know what a steep hill she climbs every day like I know it. ❤️
A8 - There are some people at upper admin who will be getting thank you notes from me this week - long overdue!! Also, I have 10 legislators & some other important peeps coming to my classroom Tues - they will get a huge thanks for listening to my Ss! #oklaed
A7: I think having fundraisers, meetings, luncheons, or any other type of organized event is a great way to get teachers together and remind them that things are being done. During that time, teachers can brainstorm new ways to continue the positivity! #oklaed
A5) as a student, in the college of education they have snacks and drinks for us to grab before our 4:25 class at the college. It always makes me feel so loved and appreciated! #OklaEd #3043
A8 - I am not good at it, but would like to find a way to be more thankful with our parents. We currently make positive referral phone calls, but I am open to ideas #oklaed
@DossettFor34 Thank you for everything that you have done as my senator to fight for funding public education in Oklahoma!! Thank you for welcoming me into your office every day during April! You are always welcome to visit my Collinsville HS classroom! #oklaed
A6: Although I am not a current educator, what I will want to do in my future classroom is start the Monday after break with a free write where students can write about their week. An important rule to me is that if the kids fold the page, I will not read i️t. #oklaEd
A8: I'm going to personally thank all of the Teachers who ignore the many reasons to leave & find the one or two reasons to stay in OKLAHOMA & invest in our future even while the political climate seems dreary, #oklaed teachers are the most fiercely hopeful and resilient! #oklaed
A8) Several of my students!!! I know they are capable and sometimes I may push them a bit too far out of their comfort zones. But when they give it their all and honestly try their best...THEY deserve to be thanked for going above and beyond. #oklaed
@DrTerriC@ckalinski I’m thankful for you guys because you are passionate about technology and teaching it. You also take time to get on the personal level with students and make us enjoy learning! #OklaEd #3043
#oklaed A8) I am thankful for the staff at @BASchools and @clevelandtigers who took a chance on a startup organization trying to do great things for teachers and kids. You all are the real MVPs.
A8: I'm also going to thank my admin bc she was very sad she can't vote for me in the upcoming election. #Oklaed She doesn't live in my ward by a couple blocks.
@DrTerriC@ckalinski A4) I’m thankful for you guys because you are passionate about technology and teaching it. You also take time to get on the personal level with students and make us enjoy learning! #OklaEd #3043
Our awesome principals and special services director!! What a great administrative team! Ts, Ss, Support! It’s takes a school village to do it all! #oklaed
A8: Any and all educators for being so committed in doing a stressful and exhausting, but also extremely empowering and impactful job. We would be nowhere without teachers! #oklaed
A8: Write thank you notes to administrators and teachers in your district letting them know that we appreciate the hard work they put in for Ts and Ss. Thank you to all those on #oklaed chat!!!
A8 #oklaed I don't have a specific list, but we have 19 days of school until Christmas Break. I'm going to make a goal of thanking at least 100 people in person for what they do for our students. And I'll keep a list. #MDPurpose
Thanksgiving 2018 all 11 members of my family were sitting at the same table
#oklaed
1971 with all of my family watching the game of the century . OU vs Nebraska Wow #oklaed.
I make positive referral phone calls too! My parents/guardians love getting these calls. I love telling them they've done an awesome job with their kiddos! We also started Students of the Quarter to celebrate outstanding kiddos! #oklaed
A3) I am thankful to be working so hard towards something I want to be and that it is a teacher. I’m almost done with my first semester of junior year and I am so thankful for what is to come because i know where the next year and a half is going to get me. #OklaEd #3043
A8 - It was family meeting night in the Barnes household. I came back to 15 twitter notifications so I had to see what Q these ppl were responding to. Y’all, I am so thankful for you! #oklaed
#oklaed A9: My favorite memory was going to my Great Grandma Garrett's house and seeing all my uncles, aunts, and cousins. There had to be at least 75-100 people there. I only saw them at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
A9 the one year we hosted Thanksgiving in Knoxville and our stove went out Wednesday night...we loaded everyone up the next morning and drove to friends’ house that we were watching while they were out of town and had Thanksgiving there...#awkwardfamilymoments#oklaed
A8) I have a lengthy list of Thank You’s to dish out. This is a practice I have - I will just be more assertive w getting to more people before the end of Christmas 2018. Then I will usher in 2019 w more of the same. Gratitude matters. #oklaed#kindwords
A9: When we have Thanksgiving at my aunt’s house, our annual dart tournament ensues. It’s always fun watching a bunch of loud, obnoxious Italians play a competitive game! #oklaed
A9 this thanksgiving marks my favorite memory . All of my children were home happy and healthy. All of my best friends made it to see me. All of my dishes came out well. I spent a large amount of time making sock puppet videos, chatter pix videos, and using green screen. #oklaed
A9: Sounds so cheesy but fave TG memory is when I made every family member name what they're thankful for. It's my fave memory bc it's one of the last times the whole fam was together. #Oklaed
