Very excited about tonight’s #engagechat topic, equity and excellence. Really EVERY education chat should have questions about equity. If we’re not attending to equity, what are we doing?
Take a look at this great visual aid highlighting the difference between equity and equality. Use this definition for Q1 coming in ONE minute! #WCPSSchat
A1 Helli everyone. Luis from RI arriving a little late. Equity is everyone having the same opportunities for success regardless of their circumstances. #engagechat
A1: Equity means leveling the playing field to give people what they need when they need it. One book that really seals this deal is Fair Is Fair by Sonny Varela. https://t.co/hY7lEkHjvR#engagechat
A1 To me equity means opportunities for everyone to work for what matters to them and makes a contribution to a just and beautiful world—not regardless of their identifiers but fulling regarding their whole selves.
#engagechat
A1: #EngageChat#R2Equity Equitable is responsive and fair; it speaks to providing what each person needs and never is about giving people the same thing...there's no cookie cutter in equity-it's personalized & pure.
A1: Recognizing each student as an individual and providing them with what they need to be successful irrespective of race, gender, culture, background, etc.
#engagechat
A1: Equity refers to fair, inclusive and just practices, policies and structures that ensure access, including access to equitable outcomes, for all. #engagechat
Would equity or equality (or both) deal with a student that is afforded less opportunities for living on the wrong side of the tracks within a district? #engagechat
A1.1 Just because we can make available everyone having access to the same resource doesn't mean it's the right resource for them...connect to them and then find out what fits them #engagechat
A1 Equity is giving students exactly what they need while eliminating barriers.
Let’s move beyond equity into complete liberation of systems that support inequity in our edu system. Change the story. #engagechat
A1.1 Just because we can make available everyone having access to the same resource doesn't mean it's the right resource for them...connect to them and then find out what fits them #engagechat
Equality would mean giving that student the same experiences as everyone else, knowing that child might not reach the same level of success now or in the future. #engagechat
If we try to apply rules of equality when the playing field is not level, that is nothing short of injustice. Equity recognizes that needs are different and addresses those differences. #engagechat
Would equity or equality (or both) deal with a student that is afforded less opportunities for living on the wrong side of the tracks within a district? #engagechat
A2: #engagechat
an equitable classroom practice is allowing language learners to use their home language when completing assignments:
https://t.co/HMLOiSKSFb
A2: The child who truly benefits from being the line leader gets to be the line leader every day. It may not seem fair, but it levels the playing field to accommodate her special needs! #engagechat
Hi Amazing Dr. Rosa! You were on my mind as I was discussing this topic-every time I think of excellence & equity you and @PedroANoguera pop in my mind! #EngageChat#RosaisJoy
A2 - #engagechat Choice Boards, Blended Learning, Flexible Seating, multi-sensory learning tools, opportunities to learn in a way that is meaningful to each student, and respects their needs.
A2:I’m in a semi 1:1 chromebook room. I’ve become more comfortable with tech and utilize it to provide more differentiation options, mostly thru allowing students more choice. #engagechat
A2: You could work with children one on one to assess them on what they know. From there you can figure out what each student needs help on. Find a way to make sure each student is on the road to success... even if some are farther along the road than others.
#EngageChat
While equity would be providing the child with what they need to succeed, while honoring their experiences from their “side of the tracks” as a meaningful source of knowledge and strengths. #engagechat
A2: Ensuring each of our Ss has what they need in order to be successful. Ss A may need a wider screen whereas Ss B may need headphones. This is why UDL is so great! #engagechat#udlchat
A2 in theory it is equal opportunity for students of all races and gender but since many don’t start on equal footing, there needs to be flexibility in equality distribution. #EngageChat
A2 - #engagechat Choice Boards, Blended Learning, Flexible Seating, multi-sensory learning tools, opportunities to learn in a way that is meaningful to each student, and respects their needs.
A2: Holding an asset-based view of & high expectations for all students; having affirming views of all students & the identities, knowledges they bring to their education; differentiating our instruction & assessment etc... #engagechat
A2: I would say “Mastery Level Learning”. Allow students the opportunity to improve grade on assessment through remediation. For mastery of content is the goal. #engagechat
A2: Flexible grouping & visiting each group to address any qs or concerns. The groups could be based on interests, skills, or sometimes I would ask Ss to volunteer to a group who needs more help. #safespace#engagechat
A2 Equitable classroom practices start with no teacher's pets. Praise in public. Assist those who need added help so everyone arrives together safely in port. #EngageChat
A2: Holding an asset-based view of & high expectations for all students; having affirming views of all students & the identities, knowledges they bring to their education; differentiating our instruction & assessment etc... #engagechat
A2 Equity-driven classroom practices might include examining resources for bias, forming authentic relationships with all students (not just those who look like us), showing high expectations, and co-constructing definitions of “success” based on their values.
#engagechat
A2: #EngageChat Culturally Responsive Classroom practices are equitable classroom practices; See book below by @Ready4rigor -it's an excellent resource
A2 Equity in the classroom begins with understanding and valuing your student’s lived experiences, culture and language. Creating opportunities to capitalize on those strengths- culturally relevant teaching. #EngageChat
A2: Flexible seating, giving Ss choice of tasks based on their learning styles and interests. Most important- it is about knowing my Ss, believing in them and loving them. #engagechat
So crucial to go beyond understanding and beyond curiosity to valuing the experiences of our Ss and their communities! Thanks for pushing to the next level! #engagechat
A few equitable practices would be arranging seating to stimulate student conversation, greeting Ss at the door, using materials that reflect the diverse backgrounds of our Ss, & even trying to communicate w/ a S in his/her native tongue. #engagechat

A3 Just as much as we honor and model excellence, we celebrate strategic effort, perseverance, and growth.
Progress and process equally valued with performance and product. #engagechat
A3. Often times, it’s our actions In front of the Ss. How do we stand for Ss that others might put down, how do we greet All Ss into the classroom... Ss watch and can tell which educators truly care about equitable practice #EngageChat
@LaneWalker2@Superstarcurric I hold students 2 date they set. Done or not they need 2 present work & a summative grade goes into the gradebook. They can revise after that however. #engagechat
A2 Flexible seating allows each individual student to have the type of furniture they need to be “successful” in their learning environment! #engagechat
A3: Be fair, kind, and keep expectations high! Treat each Ss with respect and keep the classroom a community. Listen and incorporate their suggestions and give them choice and a voice! #engagechat
Great - including opportunities for students to ask critical questions about perspectives and biases, power, privilege & missing identities/voices #engagechat
A3 Model excellence for students by not treating teaching as an 8-to-4 job. Genuine enthusiasm for coming to the classroom and sharing knowledge is contagious and strikes sparks in the process. #EngageChat
A3 Build relationships with all Ss, treat all Ss with respect, provide Ss with the resources they need to be successful and continue to ask how can I help all my Ss be successful!! #engagechat
A3 Use multiple, diverse exemplars of excellence created by people across identities and backgrounds so students fully believe there are many ways to succeed.
#engagechat
A3: We as educators must expect high expectations for ourselves. Respect one’s colleagues for student observe every single moment and our actions. #engagechat
My Ss & I sometimes analyze teaching videos together. How did the T create a culture of error? How did Ss react when someone got the answer wrong? How did T respond? When the Ss know exactly what a well-ran classroom looks like, they seek to emulate it. #engagechat
Q3 Encourage students to revise until they exceed the goal. I think fear of failure hold kids back and sticking with something until they get it can do much to overcome that. #engagechat
A3 Use multiple, diverse exemplars of excellence created by people across identities and backgrounds so students fully believe there are many ways to succeed.

#engagechat
A3: hold myself to the highest standard. I often explain to students why I carry myself the way I do. I work to really push my students to do the same because when they are out in the community&when they leave they will be a representation of me & what I taught them.
#engagechat
A3 Daily reminding them that their successes and failures are built on grades...Something negative is an opportunity for something positive #engagechat
A2: Understanding that all students are not accessing curriculum from the same place. Providing opportunities, in class, daily, to level the playing field for students. Consideration given to Pre-teaching, Scaffolding, Making curriculum more accessible & Pedagogy. #engagechat
A3 Show your students how you, and so many others, have failed their way to success. Excellence is always a result of obstacles that were overcome. #engagechat

#engagechat
A3: By de-constructing and co-constructing what excellence means; valuing the work more than just the finished product, conversation or skill; having multiple models of excellence from multiple perspectives/cultures #engagechat
A3 Show your students how you, and so many others, have failed their way to success. Excellence is always a result of obstacles that were overcome. #engagechat
A3:2/2 Letting them know that they don't have to better than a friend. Instead, they have to be better than who they were the previous day. #engagechat
A3 ~ Encourage reflection on their learning and performance! Creating opportunities in the classroom where Ts model how they reflect on their own understanding and learning! #engagechat
A3:2/2 Letting them know that they don't have to better than a friend. Instead, they have to be better than who they were the previous day. #engagechat
That's why I believe the classroom should be viewed as a community of learners, looking out for each other, learning together, in it together #engagechat
A3: model to students that the greatest leader you can be is the leader of your own life. If you live kindly, learn constantly, and contribute thoughtfully, then everybody benefits. #engagechat
That's why I believe the classroom should be viewed as a community of learners, looking out for each other, learning together, in it together #engagechat
A3. Be transparent, human, genuine and warm. Tell them the "behind the scenes story" of your craft/discipline. Show them the struggle. Help them "own" their process. Celebrate together. #engagechat
A4: To build student confidence you can give them praise when it is rightfully earned. Let them know when they did well. Even if they just picked a piece of garbage off the floor, let them know you appreciate it! #engagechat
A3: High expectations, for yourself, your colleagues and of your students. Be a learner. Share your learning. "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then is not an act but a habit. - Aristotle" #engagechat
A3: When we treat our students as highly valued customers each day we are modeling what they need for success. They will repay us by entering the world better prepared to pay it forward! #engagechat
A4: Words of encouragement. Students often ask me if I'll read something they wrote and give feedback.
I'm trying to get more of them to post on our class blog. #engagechat
A4 Celebrating risks, failures, successes along the journey to get to the final product! #engagechat Find the positive, be positive with all students!!
A4: Like @superstarcurric said, make the students aware that the journey to success will not be easy. They will fail sometimes but will need to have confidence in themselves to keep striving to do their best!
#engagechat
I love that you put the word "effort" in there. A student doesn't have to get a 100 in order to get praised. As long as they try, that's what matters! #engagechat
Q4 Make temporary failure no big deal - it's a step in the process and the next thing to do is take the next step. WARNING: This takes building relationships and patience... #engagechat
A4. I think one of the best gifts we can give students is a classroom/culture/school where they feel truly seen, heard, and valued every day. #engagechat
A4: Words of encouragement. Students often ask me if I'll read something they wrote and give feedback.
I'm trying to get more of them to post on our class blog. #engagechat
The video lesson I made for Monday shows me failing miserably at spelling necessary... I didn't mean for it to happen, but I also didn't restart the video...
#engagechat
This allows the Ss to take the risk of being vulnerable. By watching our willingness to show that at times we must humbly reflect and voice those moments of not excellence. @mrkevinparr#engagechat
A4: Allow them to be creative and discover. Let them inquire, even if the subject is uncomfortable. Help them grow, teach them that not everyone gets it right the first time and help them be OK with that. #engagechat
A5: Be kind. Like unbelievably kind. Choose your words carefully. Respect students, always. Even when you believe their behaviour might not warrant it. Positive feedback. Celebrate accomplishments. Provide leadership opportunities. #engagechat
A4: One way to build a student's confidence is to have a debreif with them after they are done to ask them what strategies did they use that helped them and what might they do differently next time. #engagechat
A4 - #engagechat Build a positive rapport, get to know your students, make authentic connections to content so that learning is fun, let students set goals and track their own progress!
A4 Allow Ss to have a voice at whatever level they’re at and within their comfort zone. I use @Flipgrid and some of my Ss perform their oral responses in their L1. #engagechat
A4 Celebrating risks, failures, successes along the journey to get to the final product! #engagechat Find the positive, be positive with all students!!
A3 #engagechat Excellence (or at least trying to get there) by asking myself every day if I’d want my kids to be in my class! I hope to model responsibility, equity, honesty and respect every day!

A4: By demonstrating confidence in their abilities to succeed, to sustain their efforts, to learn, to question/challenge, to act in the interest of others, to serve/contribute to a better world #engagechat
A4: Empower them with their strengths!
Use their abilities to teach other students to build their confidence!
Heidy is here teaching our newcomer (in Spanish) how to do her math work! #engagechat
A4: One way to build a student's confidence is to have a debreif with them after they are done to ask them what strategies did they use that helped them and what might they do differently next time. #engagechat
A4 Ask where they want to grow instead of telling them where they HAVE to grow. Then let them set achievable goals and say what help they need. They own it and they’ll make it happen. #engagechat
A4 Build student confidence by letting them have a voice and value their ideas. Empower them to ask why and why not. Guide rather than direct them, letting their minds and inquisitiveness expand. #EngageChat
A4: You can build & cultivate Ss confidence by empowering their #StuVoice, agency and ensuring their learning environment is intentionally responsive to their growth (mindful speech, mindful mantras, celebrating growth, taking risks) See Book below-great resource! #engagechat
A4 ~ Providing Ss with choice when completing assignments, choices that meet their learning needs so they can demonstrate understanding. The challenge at the secondary level is creating a classroom culture where Ss are comfortable choosing an appropriate task! #engagechat
A5: Be kind. Like unbelievably kind. Choose your words carefully. Respect students, always. Even when you believe their behaviour might not warrant it. Positive feedback. Celebrate accomplishments. Provide leadership opportunities. #engagechat

A4: 1/2 Building a warm, respectful and safe learning classroom community where Ss don't have to feel afraid of making mistakes or explore. Letting them know that everyone's thinking is valuable to our learning! #engagechat
Yes! Children will be more willing to learn when it is something they want to do and choose to do. When they are told what to do, they sometimes are less willing to do it.
#EngageChat
A4: Opportunities to take risk. Giving them the space to critically think and reflected. Positive feedback, but leave room for there own voice and thought. #engagechat
A3: To model excellence we can’t just appear excellent; we have to appear human - transparent and vulnerable - so that our students/staff know that excellence is for anyone who won’t stop at anything less. Be imperfect and show it to others. #engagechat
A4: You can build & cultivate Ss confidence by empowering their #StuVoice, agency and ensuring their learning environment is intentionally responsive to their growth (mindful speech, mindful mantras, celebrating growth, taking risks) See Book below-great resource! #engagechat
A4: Building confidence should not be limited to academic growth. Could be improvement working with a group, managing behavior, creativity, etc. Find their edge and celebrate it. #engagechat
A4: Opportunities to take risk. Giving them the space to critically think and reflected. Positive feedback, but leave room for there own voice and thought. #engagechat
A4: If we want students to develop a true sense of confidence in who and what they are we first have to make them feel safe, important and loved. #engagechat
A4: Building confidence should not be limited to academic growth. Could be improvement working with a group, managing behavior, creativity, etc. Find their edge and celebrate it. #engagechat
A4: talk to students about their strengths, we focus on the bad so much that we often forget its the strengths that can have the most impact on a student #engagechat
A4 Any strategy that builds equity builds confidence. Showing diverse exemplars gives Ss confidence that there isn’t one “right” way. Questioning bias & privilege gives Ss confidence that their work matters. Honoring more voices gives them confidence in their voices.
#engagechat
A5 Needs to be a driving force!! Needs to be discussed, need to hold each other accountable to make sure we are providing opportunities for all our Ss to succeed! Needs to be part of the school’s identity!! #engagechat
A5 Slowly erodes the “cool kids” hierarchy when we empower everyone to wear their value and giftedness loud and proud. Give them a voice and soon others will listen. #engagechat
Q5 It disrupts the mental model of teacher as judger and replaces it with teacher as coach. In the end school is so much MORE when kids want to be there - build them up rather than break them down! #engagechat
A5: A focus on equity can help the school culture by helping students be more proud and confident in who they are. This will make students enjoy school rather than dread it! #engagechat
Q5 It disrupts the mental model of teacher as judger and replaces it with teacher as coach. In the end school is so much MORE when kids want to be there - build them up rather than break them down! #engagechat
A5 - #engagechat Students will WANT to go to school because they will have multiple opportunities to learn through success, as well how to take guided risks as learners.
A5: With equity comes opportunity -students will stop viewing school as an academic obligation and start seeing it as the inspirational opportunity that it should be. #engagechat
Unconscious incompetence is the idea that 1 doesn't know what he doesn't know & cannot accurately assess his own skills. However, bc 1 is not aware of his inaptitud his confidence can be high w/o substance. We need to help Ss become aware, proficient & then automatic.#engagechat
Q5 It disrupts the mental model of teacher as judger and replaces it with teacher as coach. In the end school is so much MORE when kids want to be there - build them up rather than break them down! #engagechat
A5: Equity in the school makes a major improvement in the overall school culture because it provides each Ss with what they need to succeed. When Ss experience success, they become confident and more motivated. #engagechat
A5. Equity is connected to Excellence..If we're providing the opportunities to all of our students, they will have a better chance to learn and grow #engagechat
A5 Equity helps make schools safe for education. Agendas and suspicions are cast aside. Everyone feels confident, secure and inspired knowing the school is there to support students first and the institution second. #EngageChat
A5: A focus on equity will promote achievement and wellbeing for all. Equity and inclusion promote critical care, democratize school processes, policies and practices. #engagechat
A5: With equity comes opportunity -students will stop viewing school as an academic obligation and start seeing it as the inspirational opportunity that it should be. #engagechat
It's so important for them to not just believe school is mandatory. They should fell comfortable going every day. Like you said, they should look at it as an opportunity! #engagechat
A5: equity- the quality of being fair or impartial. In a school culture it is all about what you believe, what is tolerated, accepted, and accountability we expect from ourselves and others.
#engagechat
A5: They want to come to school because they know they will learn and experience things that will be relevant and meaningful. With equity, they know they have the tools to grasp the knowledge. #engagechat
A5 ~ Reminds me of the “fair isn’t always equal” discussion! Providing equity in opportunity for Ss does not always mean that everything will be equal! This can be difficult for some Ss, Ts, & staff to understand. #engagechat
A5 A focus on equity unsettles those with unearned privilege & unexamined bias. It might also frustrate those who‘ve demanded equity all along. Focusing on equity might be uncomfortable but can lead to a culture of deeper learning, stronger relationships, and justice.
#engagechat

#engagechat
A5: when the focus equity the school climate because one which builds a trusted space for students to learn and educators are able to stretch past the normal to higher level instruction. #engagechat
A5: In school communities we are always better together (kids/adults alike) and everyone has gifts to contribute but if we focus on restrictions/limits than we’d never be the joint force that we otherwise could be. #bettertogether#weneedeachother#engagechat
A5. When everyone in a school community can truly say this is "our" home & "we" matter - when everyone really owns their part of that truth & actively invests in making it happen - that's when we see a school with equity at its heart #engagechat
Right, and it is when we are uncomfortable that we may challenge our assumptions and then learn to be a better version of ourselves. I think that's our job! #engagechat
Thank you #EngageChat participants-I enjoyed the chat about a topic that is essential for cultivating #equitable, joyful schools! Have a wonderful weekend!
