Welcome to tonight's #rcstechchat about BYOD! Please introduce yourself, tell where you're from, what school you work at, and your FAVORITE blast from the past song or musician!
Welcome! I am Kate Brown, Instructional Technology Coach at Blackman HS. My favorite blast from the past group or song..that is definitely a hard one. I would say anything Eagles right now since I just went to the concert! #rcstechchat
Question 1 coming in 1 minute! Don't forget to include #rcstechchat and the answer number in your answer! Ex. A1: My favorite...#rcstechchat **If you've never used BYOD in your classroom, think about how you could use it as you answer your questions!
Remember to answer with A1 formatting and to include the hashtag #rcstechchat on all responses tonight!
** if you haven't used BYOD what would you like to try?
#rcstechchat
A1: My favorite BYOD tool at the moment is @nearpod. It's the perfect tool to help teachers blend their lessons & allow students to learn at their own pace while engaging with the lesson in multiple ways. It also provides amazing instant feedback to teachers! #rcstechchat
A1-- I would have to say my favorite BYOD tool at the moment is playposit. It is an easy tool that allows teachers to embed questions and/or assessement items into the videos. #rcstechchat
A1- My favorite BYOD tool is a tie between @nearpod and @msonenote . Onenote to keep all activites and links organized and nearpod because you can do just about anything through nearpod with any device brought in (that connects to Wifi)! #rcstechchat
A1 @nearpod and @OneNoteEDU are my GO TO BYOD tools! These two combined can do just about anything you can think of! One note to organize BYOD resources and Nearpod to administer content to students. #rcstechchat#dynamicduo
https://t.co/ScyQi9wmfa favorite BYOD tool is @nearpod! I find it great to be able to let students have a lesson at their own individual pace and also show them the world through a 3D class. #RCSTechChat
My name is Danyel Royal, and I’m from California. :) I’m a 6th grade literacy teacher at Stewart’s Creek! Anything Michael Jackson would be my blast from the past! #RCSTechChat
A2-- as a tech coach I use BYOD with my teachers to develop engaging lessons and encourage participating. I create learning stations and small groups where students work collaboratively through nearpod, playposit, TEAMS, kahoot, quizziz, socrative, answer garden etc #rcstechchat
A2: BYOD doesn't have to take an entire class. For ex., we use @Flipgrid for Ss to film responses to questions or in groups to teach others a new concept. We use @Mentimeter for quick polling or to check for understanding. Lots of BYOD could be used for exit tickets. #rcstechchat
A2: I think I could easily start using Kahoots/Quizlets to review info for Driver's Ed before the students start driving. It would be more exciting that way. #RCSTechChat
A2: I use BYOD with @GetKahoot as a reward. We have a "No Devices" policy at OMS and letting the students play a quick assessment game is like Christmas in July.
#MakingLearningIntoAGame#RCSTechChat
A2 I like nearpod for students answering all kinds of questions with rules, regulations, and strategies. I would like to start using it with my wrestlers and having questionnaires, etc. #rcstechchat
A 2 I have used it some with school technology as I am a lower grade teacher. I have used Kahoot & they love it. I would like to do more to get clear & fast data. #rcstechchat
Parent in Connecticut here. I'm enthusiastic about BYOD but am discouraged by the inconsistency of its acceptance in schools. The "no" BYOD signs outside classroom feel intimidating. Curious how your efforts have worked in environments that may still be wary of it. #RCSTechChat
A2- research tool in small groups, Power point presentations, and with @onedrive students are extending learning after hours at home working on presentations. #RCSTechChat
Q3 Reflect on a lesson that you have tried with BYOD in your classroom. Share the lesson idea and a success and/or failure. Or, if you haven't incorporated BYOD, how could you use it in an upcoming project or lesson? #rcstechchat
A3 continued -- one station had a selfpaced playposit video review of multistep equations then another group worked with me doing nearpod. it seemed to work well! I finished my lesson with a microsoft form for my exit ticket! #rcstechchat
A3: In biology, we used @playposit to show the T presenting a video lesson & embed questions throughout. The Ss used their devices to watch @ their own pace & answer the Qs about the video content. We realized we needed extra devices & headphones but Ss were engaged! #rcstechchat
A3 I started my BYOD lesson with a poll as my bellringer asking a question about vocab. Then we went over the poll and I broke the students up into small groups to work in stations. #rcstechchat
A3 I've had a lot of success with Kahoot!. It offers me a quick and easy assessment of the entire class which if sometimes difficult to do accurately. It's especially helpful to see what is in the minds of my more shy students. #RCSTechChat
A3: I like using survey apps to find problem areas without testing. No Grade just feedback! with really complex lessons it works great to decipher something that needs to be touched on again. #rcstechchat
A2: so far, my favorite BYOD to use in the class is @nearpod! Students love the sticky note option when answering questions/giving their opinions. This program keeps kids engaged with the variety of options for Q’s, A’s, and instant feedback. #RCSTechChat
A3 I want to use it for my wrestlers to tell me about goals, their favorite part of practice, and what they would like to see change. Also, quiz them on strategies and preparation. #rcstechchat
A3: i have used it numerous times to for Station activities in my history classes... students are able to look at many digital resources I have sent out and it allows a more personalized approach while allowing them to discuss it with peers!! #RCSTechChat
A3: Harder to store "data" from Kahoot. Using Plickers gave instant results AND analysis data. Curious about other BYOD options and their integration of data.
But when preparing assessments, practice w/ test subject to determine timing.
#RCSTechChat
A3- #RCSTechChat I use BYOD to have students take a stand on a historical decision that was made and agree or disagree with what was decided. Most recently, we did an activity on dropping the atomic bomb to end WWII
I have used Kahoot in the past to review topics. My students love making powerpoints to teach topics to each other. I would like to do more of them. #rcstechchat
A3- I have used Kahoot as a review for a lesson and to see where my students need extra support or to see if they are proficient with a skill
#rcstechchat
GREAT JOB SO FAR!
Q4 How do you use BYOD to personalize learning for your students? If you use specific programs or strategies for this, please share. #rcstechchat
A3. Last week I had my first class using @nearpod thanks to our wonderful @TechCoachErin! It was a success! I had all students completely engaged and owing their learning process. I loved it 100% #RCSTechChat
A4: @Office Forms is one of my fav BYOD tools for personalizing. Insert video, links to content, or pics in the questions, & use the branching feature to send students to enrichment or remediation based on their answer. This tool makes it simple to personalize! #rcstechchat
A4--I liked to use BYOD in small groups to help with personalize learning and incorporate BYOD in that way. I am then able to work with small groups to differentiate as needed through use of different questions asked through the same playposit videos, nearpod, & etc #rcstechchat
A4 Quizzizz is really nice for individualizing things. You're able to see which kids are missing what and can address their strengths and weaknesses in a more personal way than you might in a large group setting #RCSTechChat
A4: BYOD gives power back to the students. For students that struggle due to stage fright it works great. It gives them a voice when they might be afraid to voice an opinion! #rcstechchat
A4: Sadly, as a first year teacher, I haven't learned yet what it is that I don't know enough in order to tailor my BYOD approach to individual students. My use is largely class performance as a whole.
#RCSTechChat
A4: I need help with this one. I have used FORMS to determine areas they want to review for AP, to do polls in my semester classes, but I'm NOT great with personalizing learning. #RCSTechChat(remembered this time, will have to find my replies and RT)
A3- @nearpod seems like the perfect integration for the kids to add opinions & what goal they accomplished that day without having taught in a BYOD classroom #RCSTechChat
A4 In the past, I have created menu boards for student choice with traditional assignments and technology assignments. Ss really liked having choice on what they were graded on. #RCSTechChat
A3: I want to do this for AP review! Oy! Will they ever stumble on some of the words they haven't seen in awhile! But it will help refresh them AND remind them of the concept of overlearning!
A4 I agree with Hudson. BYOD Helps students participate who normally would not. They may not be comfortable speaking and answering questions in class but they all feel comfortable on their device #rcstechchat
A4: My students complete weekly review problems. The ones they struggle with become the topic for the next Kahoot. I also try to include a technology option when doing projects. #rcstechchat
A4 I believe most BYOD can be personalized as we can create our own questions and answers and add tons of different media to help do this. #rcstechchat
A4 So far I have not done much with personalizing learning with BYOD. I am reading these tweets in hopes to learn more to bring back to my class. #rcstechchat
it is a necessary evil. Get the kids out of their shells. It is NOT the 90 percent of students that understand, it is the 10 percent that hang behind that need the love! #RCSTechChat
A4 I agree with Hudson. BYOD Helps students participate who normally would not. They may not be comfortable speaking and answering questions in class but they all feel comfortable on their device #rcstechchat
A4: being a first year teacher as well, I’m also still figuring out the best way to tailor individual feedback, especially with technology. #RCSTechChat
A4: Sadly, as a first year teacher, I haven't learned yet what it is that I don't know enough in order to tailor my BYOD approach to individual students. My use is largely class performance as a whole.
#RCSTechChat
A4. So far, I think @nearpod is a great way to personalize learning since it can be a self paced platform. I need to start doing more use of @office#RCSTechChat
A5-makes the process of learning more interactive. Collaboration is key! Students live for technology it only makes sense to engage it! learning becomes student driven because it can be self-paced and students can ask questions and research. There is less lecture! #rcstechchat
A5: @Office programs like Sway, PoPt, Word, OneNote are available as free apps, so Ss can easily collaborate. Ss can create presentations together, work in groups on OneNote, or use the share feature to give feedback & annotate work done on Word. #rcstechchat
totally agree! This sometimes really surprises he student very talkative students when the standout student online or on BYOD is some who is very quiet in class #rcstechchat
A4: I like to use the online textbook version for students who have difficulty reading or may need to hear it in another language. Kinda like audible audiobooks I enjoy myself. #RCSTechChat
A5- Our 365 tools in the waffle allow for a lot of collaborative opportunities. It also allows us to leave feedback on student work. Using Teams is a bonus for this! #rcstechchat
A5 To continue to beat Kahoot to death, working in teams to win encourages students to relay correct answers and, when necessary, explanations to other kids in order to convince them to choose the right answer. #RCSTechChat
A4- Nearpod is a great way for students (my 2nd grader love it) to share info with their classmates. We have used it several times this year: dinosaurs, famous African Americans- there are more these are the first I rmemebered
#RCSTechChat
A5 I believe students can easily collaborate as BYOD is becoming a part of everyday life. Students use this to communicate more than talking these days! #rcstechchat
A5: I use this in journalism often because they share and edit photos, edit each other articles, yadayadayada. TODAY we were using them (no WiFI) to supplement research on psych disorders (using data if they didn't want to use a book). Collaborative project! #RCSTechChat
A5- #RCSTechChat Anytime you can make it a competition and allow kids to work together to get an answer, you get immediate collaboration and quality conversation.
A5- Absolutely Nearpod! We have done several presentations this year. My 2nd grade students each have a role and are each responsible for contributing to the presentation: pictures, heading, facts, etc
#RCSTechChat
GREAT JOB SO FAR!
Q4 How do you use BYOD to personalize learning for your students? If you use specific programs or strategies for this, please share. #rcstechchat
A5: Kahoot for teams and encouraging each other. Also use the online textbook slides to help students with discussion questions when working in pairs. #rcstechchat
lol if you like Kahoot you may want to try Quizlet Live.. student can participate in a more collaborate manner but it is still similar to kahoot #rcstechchat
My Ss really enjoy working together on Nearpod lessons. They also like seeing what their peers put as answers with the immediate feedback that Nearpod provides. #RCSTechChat
A5 I like having them work together to create their "lessons" for the class. What to include, what not to include. Great in helping my class full of strong personalities learn to work with others. #rcstechchat
lol if you like Kahoot you may want to try Quizlet Live.. student can participate in a more collaborate manner but it is still similar to kahoot #rcstechchat
Q6: How do you or how could you implement BYOD in your classroom when some students don't have devices? Don't forget to answer with A6 and #rcstechchat!
#RCSTechChat I love technology, but I am trying to encourage them to do both. They lose out on so many communication skills if they aren't doing face to face as well.
A5: Padlet. My Ts love Padlet. And then they started charging $100 a year. =( But #Edtech is not a charity. More freemiums will be evaporating soon. #rcstechchat
A6- collaboration is key! Allow students to work in small groups if there are only a few devices. Set up learning stations where devices are not needed at every station. Get with your techcoach for ideas with limited devices! #rcstechchat
A6: Blended learning & station rotations can save a teacher! If you only have a couple of devices, use them in one station only, or pair students so they can share a device. You don't need to be 1:1 for successful BYOD activities. Tips: https://t.co/eEwyuNd4g8#rcstechchat
A6- #RCSTechChat
In our classrooms, we have at least 2 computers in the room. Usually I do not have more than two students with out their own device. And partners are always an option as well.
A6 For those students that dont have devices you could always do a pair off system. Every other student has a device which would let the kids work in groups !(Evaluation Rubric!) #RCSTechChat
A5 I had them create their OWN Kahoot!, Quizlet, or Quizzizz with a rubric for guidelines. They had to collaborate with a team to ensure they were getting questions that were of reasonable difficulty with correct answers. #RCSTechChat
A5 I had them create their OWN Kahoot!, Quizlet, or Quizzizz with a rubric for guidelines. They had to collaborate with a team to ensure they were getting questions that were of reasonable difficulty with correct answers. #RCSTechChat
if you like collaboration with discussion questions and kahoot for teams I would definitely give quizlet live a try it may give you a good in between! #rcstechchat
A6: That is my question! I feel some students become disengaged because they don't have their own device. Reserving the lab and partners are all I know to do. #RCSTechChat
Q6- since we aren’t a BYOD school, the available laptop labs and iPad labs for checkout help integrate these tools multiple times a week. Thank you @tcarey98#RCSTechChat
Sad, isn't it? The memory becomes dependent on the photo or text, diluting the actual memory. Imagine the memory issues they'll have when they are 65+ from not using their memories! #RCSTechChat
A6 This is an issue with lower grades that aren't allowed to BYOD. We use devices from school & work that way. We even borrow tech from our team members. #rcstechchat
A6- absolutely! I will pair a lower student with a higher student- so the lower student gets support from the higher student. Or I will put 2 students together that are on the same level- I enjoy listening to them problem solve
#RCSTechChat
A7 We’re fortunate enough that 99% of our students have devices. They would also have no problem in sharing them. They do all the time anyway. If Inhad a dime for every time I heard a students say to another, “hey, look at this!” #rcstechchat
A6: Use classroom computers and also allow them to pair with one other student and enter both names at the beginning so I am able to go back and check when giving credit! #RCSTechChat
A6: This one is tough. I do use pairs often, but my classroom is so crowded that it's tough to do stations. I definitely need more ideas for this one! #RCStechchat
Q7: What BYOD management/behavior strategies do you or could you employ in your classroom? How do you or could you reduce student distraction or being off task during BYOD activities? Don't forget to answer with A7 & #rcstechchat!
A7: Have clear procedures outlined before you do your BYOD activity, and be consistent. Use tech/no tech zones or have Ss turn over phones when not BYOD, etc. Here is a great list of management ideas from RCS ITC, @Tibbstechcoachhttps://t.co/UJHm8LFBdv#rcstechchat
A7: I have a hands up or phones up call. I play a song on the computer to show time is up and phones are up or face down. Simple ques work the best. #RCSTechChat
A7- #RCSTechChat
The key to this is constant monitoring... Also, I always have a written replacement assignment to give to anyone who is off task. Usually it just takes one example and everyone else usually does pretty well.
A7: Not a strategy per se, but be aware of students sharing Kahoot code with students in other classes who then use profane screen names and near impossible to determine guilty party.
#RCSTechChat
A7 It's all about setting expectations and not bluffing as the teacher. BYOD is an academic endeavor and shouldn't be infringed upon my casual entertainment. Abuse it and lose it. #RCSTechChat
A6: Blended learning with fidelity supports student need regardless of device count. BYOD, like most strategies, is not a silver bullet. Pedagogy first! #rcstechchat
A7) An easy answer is to keep them engaged, but I understand tech can be distracting no matter what. Promise intervals of "free play." There's more learning in them thar hills. #RCSTechChat
Q7: What BYOD management/behavior strategies do you or could you employ in your classroom? How do you or could you reduce student distraction or being off task during BYOD activities? Don't forget to answer with A7 & #rcstechchat!
A6: I have students group together, and/or have Ss use one of my three classroom computers. When we are in the computer lab, I always make sure to implement a BYOD activity so every S feels included. #RCSTechChat
A7: Nearpod is great for this, and so is PlayPosit! Gaming like Kahoot! is great, too. It needs to be fast-paced or teacher-paced for it to sustain their attention when using a device. #rcstechchat
A7 Just like any other class rule. Enforce and be consistent and the majority of the time it’s fine. They live BYOD and don’t want to jeopardize losing it. #rcstechchat
I've also employed a contract for both Ps & Ss to sign outlining the rules of BYOD and it's use. Offenders were given a "probationary" period of alternative non-tech assignments. #RCSTechChat
A7 Lower grades need us walking around/constantly supervising. In our grades, they are good at calling each other out. We discuss expectations often as well as citizenship #rcstechchat
A7 Based on what I'm experiencing tonight...keep them busy. Keep the pace up. I know I certainly haven't had a chance to get distracted sinve we started.
#RCSTechChat
Monitor and delete when they are signing in. ONLY allow them to use first name, last initial or two last names if they are a team. Since I started deleting them, I've never had a problem. They know I'll stop using it if they abuse it. #Rcstechchat
A7 Based on what I'm experiencing tonight...keep them busy. Keep the pace up. I know I certainly haven't had a chance to get distracted sinve we started.
#RCSTechChat
A7: once again.. thats another reason to love quizlet because they have to stay involved or the other students will let you know quickly.. plus switching teams often keeps them engaged! #RCSTechChat
Q8: final question of the night! What can your instructional technology coach do to help you with BYOD in your classroom? Don't forget to include A8 and #rcstechchat in your answer!
I just want to remind you guys not to log off until you complete the form. You will NOT get credit if you log off before completing the form. Remember you have to be logged into your Microsoft act. to complete the form. #rcstechchat
A7: BYOD is a strategy to support blended learning. Student engagement through clear learning targets and accountability will undermine off-task behavior at every turn. @Sanders4Journey and @PattersonPals make that happen EVERYDAY! #rcstechchat
A8: As an ITC, I want to help all of my teachers take BYOD to the next level. We want to look at your needs & help you find the perfect tool to make your lesson more engaging, give you instant feedback, & save you time! We're here for you! #rcstechchat
A8 -You instructional technology coach can help you develop a BYOD lesson, incorporate BYOD into your preexistig lessons, co-teach with you, be there for support and the list goes on and on! #rcstechchat
I just want to remind you guys not to log off until you complete the form. You will NOT get credit if you log off before completing the form. Remember you have to be logged into your Microsoft act. to complete the form. #rcstechchat

A8 Just continue to reveal all of the options that are out there. Old things go and new things come- it's nice to have someone keep you in the know. #RCSTechChat
Great chat tonight! I am so proud of our district! My hope is that we can eventually be BYOD instead of banning devices...instead teach Ss the power they possess in the classroom. #rcstechchat
A7: when we have devices in the classroom, I’m constantly monitoring. In the computer lab, the Ts comp has a program that monitors/shows each S screen. I can also limit websites/internet when they think they are being sneaky. 😂 #RCSTechChat
A8: My tech coach is awesome and I hate to ask her for anything but I love the idea of using old iphones as extra devices on wifi. THAT ONE IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! some kind of grant to purchase those would go a long way! #RCSTechChat
A8- #RCSTechChat Our tech coach could help give me ideas of how to incorporate BYOD in to lessons that I have taught in the past. You don't have to reinvent the wheel, just make it better :)
A8: If there is something else @mskatebrown628 can do to help besides magically steal a Lenovo truck (which she'd never do!), I don't know what it is. She's in classrooms and the labs constantly, and she supports our needs with admin too! Just be patient w/ us. #rcstechchat
A8. My Tech coach already does an amazing job in planning great PDs to help us improve and be up- to-date with technological tools! Eres genial! @TechCoachErin#RCSTechChat
A8: My tech coach is awesome. Any shortcomings I have as a BYOD user is due to my own failings instead of hers.
I almost recommend a "Learn One App" per semester approach. So many amazing options almost lead to inertia in choosing.
#RCSTechChat
A8: Continue to show us new apps and programs. There are so many...but I trust my tech coach to show us ones that would be most beneficial. I may not try them right away, but I try to come around and check them out as I can. #rcstechchat
A8 Our Tech Coach is awesome! @mskatebrown628 shows us a ton of stuff to use. Many different things that all types of students, teachers, and learners can choose from. No matter the subject or medium, she has something cool to show you! #rcstechchat
Mark your calendars and set your alarm...tell your teacher friends and join us and the amazing @tcarey98 for next week's chat! This one will be powerful! Let your voice be heard. #rcstechchat
A8- maybe a few ideas of ways to hold students (early elemen.) accountable for independent work during reading center rotations, like an online portfolio the students can add pictures of work to??
#RCSTechChat
Honestly...I've heard of most everything that's been mentioned tonight but have little or no experience with most of it. A start would be a rundown of what everything is.
#RCSTechChat
Q8: keep us updated on all the new tools and also maybe help implement and import the state practice tests into kahoot or quizlets for us in their spare time #RCSTechChat

A8: our tech coach at SCMS is amazing! I appreciate all she does for us! For now, I’m still struggling with Office Excel. I’m great with Office Word, okay with PPT, and terrible with Excel. #RCSTechChat
One more thing for those of you still on. Here is the schedule for the rest of our chats. Any chats after May 8 will go towards next year's credit. #rcstechchat
