Hey all! Scheduled some tweets as it's Holy Thursday for Eastern Orthodox and I'm at church! I wanna start w/a huge shoutout to @CTDatNU I was in their programing as a kid then taught at summer and Saturday enrichment! #gtchat
A1 I think one of the most valuable parts of summer enrichment is for Ss to have a real opportunity to be surrounded by a diverse group of kids like them. #gtchat
A1 When I worked at @CTDatNU , I had kids from India, China, France...inner city kids, suburban kids, but they all shared an intense curiosity and love of learning and had a LOT to share with each other. #gtchat
Are you new to Twitter chats? We use the Q1) / A1) format for #gtchat … Please remember to use the #gtchat hashtag to participate in the conversation. This will make sure that other chat participants see your tweets.
Hello, #gtchat! Chiming in from Minnesota, advocate, parent, ad hoc librarian / coordinator for GT learners. Looking forward to topic, especially in context of equitable access to GT supports in the classroom vs constraints families face for enrichment outside of the classroom.
Our first question is coming up; let’s get ready to chat! Please preface your responses with A1) Excited to collaborate and share ideas about summer enrichment opportunities with you today! Please note: no links today equal endorsement. #gtchat
A1) There are many reasons to find summer enrichment; particularly when so many gifted students are languishing in classrooms where they lack challenge and enrichment. It’s been my experience these kids crave enriching summers. #gtchat
A1) It borders on neglect not to. "Opportunities" needn't always be formal, though. They need exercise for mind, body and soul, however it comes. #gtchat
A1) Summertime/school holidays can provide those rare opportunities for family time; forming true-peer relationships in pre-college or camp experiences; engaging in passion projects; exploration of new interests. #gtchat
A1) With all the summer programming that is available, how are other parents of gt children finding programs that are truly for gifted? And not just a few science experiments with mentos? #gtchat
A1) It borders on neglect not to. "Opportunities" needn't always be formal, though. They need exercise for mind, body and soul, however it comes. #gtchat
A2) Enrichment can cover wide-ranging areas; but should ‘extend’ learning experiences. Consideration should be given to a child’s current level of understanding and desire to enhance knowledge in a particular area. #gtchat
A2) The last thing my kids want during the summer is anything billed as a learning opportunity. It has to be focused on fun. I care about them growing but they don't want to notice. #gtchat
A2 #gtchat then local universities and colleges often offer "kids college" programs. The plus is that there is a variety of interest from arts to STEM to languages. Bad is the costs can add up, especially for kids from low income homes. Transportation can also be an issue.
Not that I needed much of a segue, but there's a #ParentCamp coming to D.C. and the registration deadline is tomorrow. The theme is summer slide and it will provide tips and tricks on this very thing. #gtchat

What I find really frustrating is that even college-for-kids courses are far too easy, especially in computers/tech. DS16 is so far beyond that, and DS13 is about as bad. I'm struggling finding things for this summer! #gtchat
A2) Enrichment should not be an attempt to recreate the ‘classroom’ in just another setting. It should be fun and interesting for kids. They should be the one to determine the content of their enrichment experience. #gtchat

A3 Parents gotta find enrichment opportunities LONG before summer holidays, so they'll be full and parents will be up a creek. Learned that lesson the hard way.
A3) Families need to take time for careful planning both in terms of time constraints, budget, and what the child wants to do. Family time together is precious; a time for building memories. Including enrichment is a win-win situation. #gtchat
A3- by letting their child take the lead- trips to museums, historical sites, projects at home. Summer is a good time for exploration outside of he standard curriculum #gtchat
A3: family bonding time! Use the time to let EVERYONE learn about a common interest! Travel somewhere that meets everyone needs and leads to great conversations #gtchat
A3) Favorite vacation destinations, a family visit, even sightseeing; all can be repurposed or enhanced to seek enriching experiences for gifted kids. Family planning sessions can help to maximize the benefits for everyone. #gtchat
A3) What about volunteering? Many local places need volunteers and they get real experience. Ss also get to work on those S/E skills, meet new people, and possibly work in an area they are thinking about for a career. #gtchat
I wish there were ANYTHING all my kids were interested in. But, no, there is no overlap. Sigh. So we do a lot of negotiating and practicing patience. #gtchat

I am the volunteer manager of a small community garden and my kids come all summer to help. We installed a little free library in the garden and my one gt kid helps with books, the other with everything else. #gtchat

A4) Virtually all colleges & universities offer some form of pre-college enrichment. By scheduling opportunities at various schools, students can get a feel for the college experience while deciding what they are looking for in a school. #gtchat
A4) We had a great experience with a summer program that was housed at a university. Not only did dd benefit from the program, but got to experience being on a college campus, attending classes, socializing and dorm life. #gtchat
A4 #gtchat Khan Academy has some enrichment. I haven't looksed at it deeply, but I think I remember seeing projects in addition to the regular academics
A5) I like camp-style experiences that address social-emotional concerns while also guaranteeing a gifted child being able to associate with intellectual peers and mentors. #gtchat
Q5) Camp Ballibay in Eastern PA offers free range art, music, dance, and theatre opportunities for kids at their level of interest. My daughter thrives there. #gtchat
A5) Camp-style opportunities afford gifted students to have a relaxing and fun experience that informs/instructs/enhances learning outside a traditional classroom. #gtchat
A5. My teaching partner and I have held creativity camps for 12 years. We’ve hit every coffee shop in town for skits, poetry readings, and art exhibits! #gtchat
