#UrbanEd chat is a twitter chat for educators. Topics relevant to the subject of urban education will be discussed, but all educators are encouraged to join the conversation. The chats will be moderated by Ben and Neil, founders of Engaging Educators and elementary school teachers in Detroit, MI.
Hi #UrbanEdChat and #TCEA Im super excited to be chatting with you via Austin. Tonight were doing the chat w/ a twist. We're going to use .@flipgrid to extend our responses. After your Q&A extend your responses at https://t.co/TYDBxdVu7l Keep the conversation going! #edtechtinker
A1 For me I felt like I had to know all the material for my ss & I would feel embarrassed. Taking the risk in front of my ss & making a connection with what they relate to helped my overcome it. #UrbanEdChat#Edtechtinker#TCEA
A1: I think for me as a teacher I saw the value of technology, but really didn’t experiment. As an administrator I had to change my own mindset. I took baby steps and tried new things. Overtime it has paid off. #urbanedchat
A2 The fact that my learners are more engaged when I try new things inspires me to keep going. I also like when my learners take the risk because they see me take a risk. #UrbanEdChat#TCEA#Edtechtinker
A2: I think the key is to “stay the course” then go and adjust afterwards. When I started doing book chats with my staff the first chats are always rough, but we adjust and it pays off. #UrbanEdChat
A2 I think we should always have a Plan B...But that should never stop us from trying again...A missed chance is just another opportunity for success #UrbanEdChat
A3 I think in most schools or districts it is not the norm. We have to teach them digital citizenship with devices and take things step by step with them. #urbanEdChat#TCEA#Edtechtinker
A1: Taking chances and stepping away from everything that worked in the past. What changed it...taking a leap and allowing myself to embrace failure! #UrbanEdCHat
A3: I think like anything you have people that have that growth mindset and some with a fixed mindset. You have to create a classroom culture that allows students to take risk. The teacher has to model risk taking as well.#UrbanEdChat
A3 Using new tools and resources can be just as daunting for Ss...If we connect with them, we can let them know we are all going through these changes together #UrbanEdChat
In the beginning not much went as planned and many things were never finished, but through failure I learned each time what things did work and how they enhanced what I did in the classroom! #urbanedchat
A4 Encourage them to go to admin like #TCEA!! Show ss the power of collaboration and going beyond the 4 walls of the classroom. #TCEA#Edtechtinker#UrbanEdChat
A4: You have to show them how technology enhances the learning experience, but does not replace the curriculum. Technology should not be viewed as a toy. Also other administrators need to help other administrators get on board #UrbanEdChat
A4 Planning and patience...We can advise them that a few small changes can have major impacts...Along with that should be a mindset to one of embracing tech while teaching responsibility #UrbanEdChat
A5 We are preparing ss for a world that is always changing. We want them to able to practice collaborating and creating for careers that are not even made yet. #UrbanEdChat#TCEA#edtechtiner
A3: I have never had an issue with children being apprehensive, however I do with teachers. They fell still that before they can teach with a tool they must know how it works. I am teaching them to just show Ss a finished product and let the kids figure it out! #urbanEdChat
A5: We have to prepare our students for the workplace that is ten years from now and not the workplace that we see right now. Classroom creativity and technology skills prepare them with soft skills that will help with collaboration and innovation. #urbanedchat
A6 Try BYOT in one classroom. Look at the devices that are already in the classroom now and turn those into student stations. #UrbanEdChat#TCEA#EdTechTinker
A6: You have to establish norms and allow them opportunities to use their technology to assist in the instruction. Administrators have to support in establishing these norms campus wide. #urbanedchat
A7 Provide parent workshops to discuss campus and district initiative about tech integration 7 digital citizenship. You can inform parents in newsletters as well. #UrbanEdChat#TCEA#EdTechTinker
A4) As a Technology Specialist I came to an AH-HA moment recently. We focus on spreading tech thru Ts. I am beginning to think that we should focus on the Ss more. Teach them, and have them teach others and Ts also. #UrbanEdChat
A8 I recommend taking tech integration in small doses that Ts can handle. Don't let it overwhelm you. Remember content is most important but keep the ss engaged. #UrbanEdChat#TCEA#urbanedchat
A6: Every school is different. Our schools have GREEN zones for use. A phone is a powerful tool if an instructor takes risks learning how to tap into it. Schools learn from failures and adjust along the way to find that perfect fit. #UrbanEdChat
