#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
Greetings, #K12ArtChat friends!! Sad to report that Peter @peterhreynolds is under the weather tonight. I'm available to answer any questions you might have about #DotDay
I had a little idea in 2009 and shared it with Peter and then the world. With the help of passionate educators, librarians, and ART educators, it became a massive movement #K12ArtChat

A1 - One of my students said this to me on the first day of school #FromTheMouthsOfBabes not sure I can say it better myself! Creating art teaches our kids to express themselves, take risks and helps them learn that communication isn't always through language! #k12artchat
A1 I used this image tonight at back to school night to share my thoughts on this. Art skills are awesome, but without meaning, there’s no balance. When kids get to make THEIR mark, we honor THEIR voice #K12ArtChat
Students need opportunities to learn to express themselves, explore & experiment. The power of discussion, debate and open communication is an art that many in our world need to practice. #a1 .#K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A2 Frame up Global Issues and allow students the opportunity to engage and design solutions. *Creating a PSA about trash and effects on environment.
Q2 connecting to the community has always been a focus of my practice. Through murals and social practice artmaking, my ms Ss were able to make lasting impact on their community. Now in a new school, I’m excited to bring these ideas to hs students and a new community! #K12ArtChat
A2: We hold a school-wide community fine arts night that features every student, and includes community programming, and MS/HS/UNT/TWU volunteers. It is a huge event that connects our community and the arts together! #k12artchat
#k12artchat Oh I never would have thought about a school-wide community night with arts being the focus. I love this and how your community gets so close!
A2: We have a couple of units that ask questions of students to integrate this msg...how does art help a community? How can art make something beautiful? How does art make us look at the world differently? #K12artchat
Q3: Vashti’s teacher asked her to sign her artwork to help build creative confidence. What do you do to help instill creative confidence in your Ss? #K12ArtChat@peterhreynolds
Community is key to #DotDay! Just today I celebrated with my entire K-12 school, so that community was grand. Connecting with other teachers and schools is also so valuable in building empathy #K12ArtChat
A3 I think we help our students build creative confidence by allowing them to experiment and make mistakes... here are some kinder kiddos experimenting this week with dots, lines and patterns preparing for #DotDay18#K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A3 Community is important to bring people together to have an understanding and connection. What makes us unique is also universal. Celebrate!
A2: Without Art, Communities do not thrive! We need to teach children how to interject their talents into their community so we can continue to be successful.#K12ArtChat
A3 I run a 100% choice art room and build student confidence by honoring their ideas, encouraging them to explore their ideas and helping them to execute their ideas. Meaningful, personal exploration is such a key skill to help students develop. #k12artchat
Giving students a voice to express concerns about our world, their community and our schools can empower them to make a difference. Programs like @studentsrebuild or community installations like @pinwheels4peace show students ways art make a visual impact. #K12ArtChat#a2
A3 creative confidence can come from understanding expectations clearly. Personally, I like to know the boundaries and I think students need this information too. Rubrics in advance & sharing a wide variety of artists exploring any topic can be confidence builders #k12artchat
A3: Ss curate their own art show, show work in Hall/online/to real life audience, help them see themselves as creatives. Address them as artists & encourage their own unique view of their world & their artistic interpretation of it. Ask what art THEY want to make. #k12artchat
Q3: Vashti’s teacher asked her to sign her artwork to help build creative confidence. What do you do to help instill creative confidence in your Ss? #K12ArtChat@peterhreynolds
A3 I always have a mini celebration with a student when they are really stuck. “I tell them just like a highlight is always next to a shadow. Greatness is just behind your struggles. Keep going you are almost there.” #K12ArtChat
A3: To ensure that your students are confident in their work, always be sure to reward, compliment and encourage them. Always have a positive attitude so that they feel comfortable with what they're doing. #K12ArtChat
Q3: Vashti’s teacher asked her to sign her artwork to help build creative confidence. What do you do to help instill creative confidence in your Ss? #K12ArtChat@peterhreynolds
A3: today we are wrapping up contour drawing. (learning abt Contour, Blind Contour & Cross contour drawing) Direct observation, Lots of frustrations this wk, but stronger drawers came from it! #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A4 it’s important to model what we preach. I do the walk & talk. Be Authentic! Be a creative leader in the community. Let your students know you are active as a creative.
A3: Student choice and student voice. Allowing my students to select their images, medium, and participate in their class curriculum. I run a very open classroom where students have the liberty to express their artistic views. #K12ArtChat
A4: Showing children to move past fear is important. In order to do this, they must be slowly introduced to the fear and be faced with it; only to realize its not anything to be afraid of. Guide them and reassure them everything is ok. #K12ArtChat
A3: I tell them I trust them and that they should trust themselves. That language has been huge in my classroom. I wrote about it for EdCloset. For real, game changer for us! https://t.co/l2RKwEGTsd#k12artchat
A2- We teach our students of the importance of their community by incorporating ‘service projects’, such as the @LtlFreeLibrary’s my students and I and our librarian installed around our county, last school year. #k12ArtChat
A4 Like Vashti’s art teacher, I try to encourage to take small, manageable steps. I also try to define great work as work that is made, not only work that looks nice. Sometimes the simplest work is the best work. #k12artchat
A4 with student I remind them that if they “could” already, they wouldn’t be taking a class. With myself I try to remember that I “can” do many other things and eventually I will be able to do this too. #k12artchat
I feel like making students understand that critique is not bad is one of the hardest things to achieve. Do you have something you recommend for other teachers? #k12artchat
A4- How we get our students to move past fear to work With them, side-by-side, on the current project, which will help them to see their teacher struggling too, and that it’s OK to struggle. It’s not a big deal #K12artchat
A5 Sounds silly, but this year I introduced our first project (illustrate your intention... for the school year) with some of my own work! Had to be brave... kids can be tough critics! #sohonest#nofilter Mrs R can be a risk taker too! #k12artchat
A5: to me, "Create Bravely" means do not be afraid of creativity. Expressing your actual self is the best art there is. Anytime someone is confident in their work and not afraid to be themselves, the art is more appreciated. #K12ArtChat
A4. I try to model moving past fear by example. The first 15 minutes of class is personal work in sketchbooks. I work along side the kids. They get to see me succeed and fail just like they do. Then we each choose a fail page and rework it later #K12ArtChat
#K12artchat Q5/A5 Create bravely - To create bravely is to create with a sense of confidence while embracing feedback as is comes and showcasing your own vision and not worrying if someone else will criticize it. #EdLeadership@austinpeay
#K12ArtChat A5 that answer depends on the individual. Placing a mark on any surface is brave. What it looks like isn’t what we should value the most . It’s the act of making a mark with their own hands/mind is what deserves celebrating. If we do that- so much will follow.
A5 create bravely means taking chances with media, subject and content/concept. It means try new things and don’t be afraid to mess up - nothing in the studio is so precious that we can’t make a second go at it if the first fails #k12artchat
A2: showing them how powerful and meaningful art can be and how you can communicate through art with people around the world. Encourage them to make Art! #K12ArtChat
A3 just had open house tonight, as I explained choice and voice in the art room, do overs and growth mindset- parents wished they were in my class taking art now. #k12ArtChat
I hate to say I have to peace out early...kids are begging for story time with The Dot tonight! I will have to check back in tomorrow #k12artchat so great to be on, even for a short while!
Q6: In “The Dot” , Vashti finds her passion in visual art. How can we leverage books and other media to help kids find their spark? #K12ArtChat@peterhreynolds
Q5: I teach HS so that means having students create art not for a grade but for a purpose or for themselves. I always give the peramiters and chellenge them to buck me on the 'rules' of an assignment. When they question me and we can discuss... we are both 'brave'. #K12ArtChat
A6: By exposing kids to different types of art, they will be triggered and will find an interest in something. Showing movies and reading books is a great way! #K12ArtChat
A6. I think it’s important for arts educators to discuss all works of art from a symbolic perspective. Characters, events, places actions can all be metaphors that we can use to comprehend our own lives. That’s the power of the arts. That’s the purpose of the arts. #k12artchat
Nikki from Bentonville, Arkansas checking in... my Target store finally had their signed copies of The Dot and I found one this evening! 😊 #targetdot#goldenticket#kidlit#k12artchat
A3: I let students practice and experiment with different materials to find a medium/media they enjoy to create artwork. It helps to be comfortable and build confidence. #K12ArtChat
A5 For me “Create Bravely” is using materials like they are not going to break. Loads of paint, chunks if clay, large pieces of paper, clumps of modge podge, strong marks #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A 6 we use TONS of books in the art room for inspiration but my new fav thing is to tweet out student recommendations, they bring in books they love or inspire them and then I share them on twitter #SWESaction#studentaction
A6- We can use books & other media to help students find their creative spark, to Brainstorm Their Ideas better. I use lists, such as: Poets/writers that students choose one, looking up a poem by that author & creating an interpretive drawing based on the poem #K12artchat
A6 I’m obsessed w books - serious case of Tsundoku! I share so many books with kids - I❤️showing the variety of illustration styles in picture books and comics. I also look forward to sharing books on creativity with my older students - like Art & Fear and Big Magic #k12artchat
I think @peterhreynolds would want everyone to honor the art of your students in the way Vashti's teacher did so they can feel brave. He would want you to keep showing them the best you have. He would encourage everyone to be kind to their own art.

A5: create bravely to me, means getting to that point where most quit because it is not quite what you imagined at first and then powering through, problem-solving, and not give up on your work to the end. It may not be what you planned and that is OK! #k12artchat
Q7: Dot Day is an international event with millions of participants. How do you make global connections for your Ss throughout the yr? #K12ArtChat@peterhreynolds#DotDay18
A6 I’ve been encouraging the use of more books for research and reference for projects; not that technology isn’t good, but there is a different experience utilizing books. #k12artchat
Q6: Books, artists, digital media, and more are integral parts of the art classroom! Teaching kids from a young age about different tools to use, and providing safe learning experiences to try the process in class! I have a huge classroom library and tech too #k12artchat
A7 I am looking into participating in the memory portrait project and hope to engage my classes in some ATC trades with colleagues teaching abroad #k12artchat

A7 my 5th gr Sts do a unit with @PenpalSchools called The Power of Art helps them dig into researching artists past/present all around the world that use their voice to express themselves & draw attention to causes they care about! #ARTivism#K12ArtChat
A4: By modeling failure and stepping OVER the bump in the middle of the road. We need to remind ourselves and Ss that mistakes/fear is ok. We just need to find a way to fix it and move on pass that bump. Be positive #K12ArtChat
A7 We are going to be utilizing a program from @GEAdditive sharing 3D printing designs globally; looking forward to seeing what kids do with different ideas by sharing #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A7 keep a pulse on the greater community. We participate in city wide art projects yearly. The community knows my students do great things & are able to share it with the greater population. Ie:painted piano, murals, empty bowls, Peace Rocks We Bring It!
A7- I seek out many interesting project ideas for my students. One in particular that I did last school year, was for Art 2 to collaborate with our AP US History teacher @MLCHS_Ruddy & JROTC to Skype the War Museum in Pontiac, IL., then create pastel military posters #k12artchat
A8: by educating students on different artists, eras of art and more helps to advocate for the arts. Making different lessons based on the time of year is also helpful. #K12ArtChat
A8 never stop talking about arts education, always stay involved with my state through @mercer_nj_yam@ArtEducatorsNJand@ArtsEdNJ , invite everyone-to everything so they can see what’s coming out of our studio, present and attend conferences like @NAEA#K12ArtChat
A8 I encourage making and problem solving every day - through school and with my daughter (our house is a giant maker space sometimes😂). Every day is an arts adventure! 🎨#K12ArtChat
In my high school classes I use the technology all kids love. Cell phones! When teaching the elements of art they photograph, edit and upload from there device. #K12ArtChat
A8- I not only Advocate for Art all year long, but Most Importantly, I Advocate for MY STUDENTS all year long. They are the reason Why I push myself to create projects to test their creativity, their analytical skills and their mastery of mediums #k12artchat
A6: We all learn visually... whether it be sketch-noting, projects, or images. Ss need a buy in. In HS careers in art explains how artists are an intrigal part of society. In class we can also team up with academic teachers to display our talents.#K12ArtChat
Some of you might be interested in my upcoming book, The Art of Comprehension, which helps define the importance of the arts and helps all students to share their voice. @peterhreynolds did a great job on the cover!! #k12artchat
