Nothing formal #bfc530 However they are constantly reminded to get a book. Plus we have an amazing librarian who can hook students into just that book that suits them.

I expected my students to have a book with them at all times. Any time they finished something early, they could read, and I'd often give them reading time at the beginning or end of class. Other Ts knew they had books and would do the same. #bfc530
  • franziski123 Dec 6 @ 5:34 AM EST
I work in a little reading every day. Every lesson needs reading, writing and a hands on activity. #bfc530

  • BAKetcham2009 Dec 6 @ 5:34 AM EST
A: teaching social studies means a great deal of reading anyways. I try to get items that interest them daily, EX biographies of people they want to know more about. #bfc530
  • mearnshaw158 Dec 6 @ 5:34 AM EST
Most of our classrooms have designated time to read. I do my best by doing into the classrooms to read to them. I also have books displayed on my mobile desk and try to find 30 minutes where i read for myself in a spot Ss, & Ts, see me modeling reading. #bfc530

In US History we read everyday ... in my tech classes it is not quite so obvious ... there is a lot of student finding out how to do things on the Internet and that requires reading #bfc530

The secret to engaging students in reading is to give them choice and time to talk with other students about their reading. #bfc530

As a math teacher, it's a lot of directions and word problems. But in ELA, they have an ABR book (always be reading) which is self-selected. #bfc530

Where I student taught years ago, they had a "Drop Everything And Read" where EVERYONE in the building had to read, from principal to maintenance. No meetings were scheduled in that time. #bfc530
  • lethajhenry Dec 6 @ 5:37 AM EST
We treat our reading time as precious. Just the other day I got shushed by a student when I spoke to someone at the door- and I was so proud! #bfc530

I support reading time outside my class by book talking with them casually I’ve had familiarize myself with urban dramas in order to keep current. #BFC530
  • GruntledChalkie Dec 6 @ 5:37 AM EST
Yeah. As a maths teacher reading is important. I had a student whose marks would go up about 4 grades if I had an aid read the question to him #bfc530

  • DennisDill Dec 6 @ 5:38 AM EST
I have also found that having a classroom library helps those “closer readers” find something to read. Always see kids perusing the books then asking can I take this book home ... even the ones who don’t want others to know they read. #bfc530
  • kmichellehowell Dec 6 @ 5:38 AM EST
I’m very lucky to be in a school of readers! Some students come and check out a new book each day—and they read them because we talk about them. My goal now is to add more of what they like & get them to try new authors/series. #bfc530
  • SusZanti5 Dec 6 @ 5:39 AM EST
Literacy across all content areas-Ss read in every class, and reading is a priority-offering comfy spots to read, hosting “Battle of the Books”, and we have incredible media centers! #bfc530 😊 👍
  • DebbiSab Dec 6 @ 5:39 AM EST
I would say same. Teaching business & technology my kids have to read, but not novels. With my Pride club we have made an #LGBTQ library in my room for us to share:) #bfc530

We had the same for a couple years every Friday. Then the extra period morphed into daily to include time for homework help and reteaching, and then Ts encroached on the reading time for reteaching, and it disappeared. Too bad. I loved it. #bfc530

We also make time for students to read aloud in front of their classmates. We celebrate 1st timers with a dance party at the end of the day- now it's so popular we had to make a sign-up sheet #bfc530

Totally agree! We had tons of support for the protected reading time initially, but staff changed, Ts new to the school weren't in on the original initiative, those who didn't like it from the start found excuses. Important to have school buy-in and also admin support! #bfc530
