I know I am having a fabulous year “principaling on the pacific” in Powel River, but know there are some struggling (both because of external and internal factors) #bcedchat
#bcedchat A1: As a TTOC, I've booked off this week to go south to help an injured sister. I will be back on Wednesday for the Intermediate Math Club Christmas Party. (I bring the math puzzles in a Christmas theme).
A1 with a 9’ train in our gym, I am hoping to keep everyone relaxed as we get set for our Tuesday performances and then slow things down heading into the break....modelling as much as reminding #bcedchat
Hello. My name is Christine. Teacher educator. Math educator. Researcher. Was in Prince George. Now back on the Sunshine Coast. No snow here. Just rain and wind. Looking forward to tonight’s chat. #bcedchat
A1 I dream of making it out alive. I dream of my small humans having a safe and calm week and break. So much stress and anxiety being felt and seen this week #bekind#smallpeople#bekind#bcedchat
I love how math and coding can be very distracting/regulating at this time of year - need more of this type of matching throughout the year!! #bcedchat
A1 I am hoping to continue the learning with my classes through the loss of Ss to various trips, activities and what not. I am also trying to keep the stress down from prep for christmas #bcedchat
A1. Oh no... it's going to be this kinda chat. Rough. Hoping to get my work done in a timely manner so that I can enjoy my family vacay in Vegas. #bcedchat
Most of our shopping done and our oldest flies back from university in three more sleeps! #bcedchat can’t just focus on school - gotta remember the homeworld as well!

A2 I’m gonna stretch a bit and repeat a conversation I had last week - it’s the season to explore moving away from gradebooks and explore how our curriculum and efolios allow learners to approach Big Questions in personalized ways.... too soon?? #bcedchat
Hi @technolandy and @JanetChowMSc It's Stella, Grade 1/2 teacher from Victoria. I am sick with a horrible cough that won't go away so my A1 is I hope to be back to school on Tuesday after going to the doctors tomorrow. #bcedchat
I know right?! When did we go from two to three? Feeling like the three are now the replacements of the Math 10, ELA 10 and ELA 12 provincials?
#bcedchat
With my head pounding (and not because of hammering nor carolling) I have great empathy for those not feeling well this time of year. And while I support others taking the day to get well, I am not a good “walker of this talk” #bcedchat
#bcedchat A3: A powerful exercise is to think about the defining moments in your life (especially your teaching life) as these are the 'stops' where your teaching/assessing changed.
A3. Celebrating Christmas (or any family event) with a double duck dinner. A strange ritual, but it reminds me of my mom. "Nothing brings people together like a double duck dinner." #bcedchat
A2. Jumping in late to #bcedchat. Something that we are working on is taking #bcedchat from a weekly Twitter Chat to an actual face to face event....we are doing it on Jan 19 along with @EdCampBCCC
#bcedchat Unfortunately, the words to these Christmas songs are not very well known as caroling, Christmas programs are greatly reduced. There are only about 6 songs playing in the malls etc. Even typing 'caroling', the spellcheck thought 'cajoling' was what I wanted. Sigh.
A3 my kids say they are still looking forward to our annual Christmas Day drive to see relatives! Quiet roads. Morning slurpees (and this year no mountain passes!!) #bcedchat
2 Peking Ducks for dinner... plus others. Pretty extravagant. My mom loved bringing us together and we loved Peking Duck. So why not TWO? #bcedchat#family#traditions
A3-I remember driving with the family looking at Christmas lights. We told the boys were we going to go and do it and their faces fell and the didn’t like the idea. #busyplayingfortnite#bcedchat
It’s tricky to me mindful of the different faiths within our schools and Learning Community - it can be a challenge to be truly inclusive and respectful.... #bcedchat gotta do best we can!
A4. Drive my kid around and make her lunch. Life without your mom and now I'm back. Although I think she might be aggravated by the "smothering mom" effect, there's a part of her that likes it too. I might even make her some cookies (or steal some from @rilmcknight). #bcedchat
#bcedchat I use these as examples from my tradition and challenge students to create their own from their traditions. We then can try to cipher what their wordies mean even without knowing theirs. Provides for a good sharing of what is important to each at this time of year.

A4: My educational consultant team wrote and sent Christmas cards (with a treat-yourself-card too) to all of our new teachers
I love creating/crafting and sending cards to family and friends
#bcedchat
A4 I always like it when my kids either take donations to the food bank or deliver hampers to those who need them. Perspective and empathy matter! #bcedchat

#bcedchat A4: My sister's broken ankle gives my wife and I an opportunity to do those things that are hard for her without the use of a leg. Provides for good family time as a California cousin will arrive tomorrow as well. We also host 20 for Christmas.
A4: I have been spending very enjoyable time with my grandchildren making gifts for their Mom and Dad. Such joy in sharing time together and creating something they are "proud" to give. #bcedchat
A3-I hosted the Christmas staff party, so I’m bring extra leftovers crackers and cheese on Tuesday. We are having a taco fiesta for lunch tomorrow just making the staffroom fun! #bcedchat
Shhhh but I’m working on my cards (hand printed since my cursive is too much like a secret font/code) to my staff.....even @technolandy goes low-tech sometimes #bcedchat
A5: Mentioning #bcedchat 's PLN in other chats lets others know of what a wonderful learning network has been created and how rich the ideas while embedded in fun & creativity.
Laugh and Learn with #bcedchat !
I think @CocktailUmbrlla is someone worth shining a light in. She’s a new to coquitlam teacher and rocking it in the middle schools. Her passion for writing is inspiring and she’s already open to new opportunities and ways of thinking ❤️ #bcedchat
I handwrite cards to all my students and gift each of them a book I chose/collected for them since Sept. I think it’s important for kids to own their own books, and develop a love for them ❤️ #bcedchat
A5 gonna shine the light on @TheWeirdTeacher who has some great books (many about teaching) including his latest which is a fabulous read for teacher candidates and their mentors! #bcedchathttps://t.co/EhkZw69OqR
A6 I love going out with a bang.. so we will be exploding volcanoes and having fun with dry ice. It lends itself to great discovery questions and memory recall over break #bcedchat
A6. Keep time useful in school? Term ended for me in higher ed. I'm making use of my time in front of the fireplace, heating up, and napping. #goodtimes#bcedchat
A6 I always like teaching till “the end” whether Dec 22 or June 29 - repeating “hour of code” centres has been popular, but I always like those days to explore “something different” #bcedchat
#bcedchat A6: I have a lot of problems!
Fortunately they are fun to do inquiry together so I never do the movies/time fillers.
I disguise thinking in 'fun looking' stuff.
Time....trying to finish a book later tonight so I can add a new cover to my “what is Mr Landy reading” display outside of my office! Some of those hours in the 24/day move faster than others....! #bcedchat
Instead of genius hour, genius day. I’m always so inspired by their passion and curiosity when there are 6 hours of unstructured (minimally structured) learning. I also love doing letter writing too - to other classes with a quick turn around of correspondence #bcedchat
I heard third hand that a student from my second year still had the book I gave her! Cool when reading makes a connection that lasts for years (esp since i didn’t think it was a big deal when I gave it to her) #bcedchat

I picked the movie for Q7 because do often I see Ts pick it out and I ask if they’ve seen it recently or just remember it..... it’s a great move...for some, not all. And all in all I find those “movie breaks” aren’t as special a reward as it used to be pre-Netflix #bcedchat
A7 we like to misremember the past, and those things that were once “innovative” didn’t quite make it past the prototype stage...remember Prezis? #bcedchat
#bcedchat A7: This is a great reminder about being static; cultural references change with time. I can't just use the 'same old'. Saying this, I haven't updated the Wacky Holidays since 2000. What songs do kids know these days? Challenge to keep current and involve the students.
A7. Whoa. I'm confused by this question. That said, with the last week in school... albeit, cray cray... I hope that we can remember that this is the season for happiness and joy. I hope we can achieve this before our students head out for their 2-week winter break. #bcedchat
A8 My greatest advice is not to rush things and just be patient as it usually works out. I learnt the hard way one time doing a lab with sugar and sulfuric acid. It wasnt working so I took it out of the room to put it outside and it started to react... #bcedchat
AS I headed to the doors only to find them blocked by snow. So imagine me running the halls to the next set of doors with a beaker reacting and my students running behind screaming this is awesome. Fun times #bcedchat
I thought of A7 because when I was a kid it was a special event to see the movie machine roll into the classroom. Now it’s just a Tuesday.... (meaning not special at all) #bcedchat what was once cool and exciting doesn’t remain that way - 1/2
2/2 - Douglas Adams had a good paragraph about the sunsets on a planet exploding and putting on a spectacular show - but of course the locals got used to it and it wasn’t so neat. Still love the Sunshine Coast sunsets though! #bcedchat
A8 my LRT said she appreciates the aura of calm I give off. As I like to say, when I seem nervous or agitated that’s the time to panic, but until then.... #bcedchat
A8 listen listen, if i see someone on staff doesn't have a place to go for Christmas I welcome him in my family. nobody should spend the holidays alone #bcedchat
It’s a little retro, but kids have enjoyed when I’ve given them “boredom breaks” and self-regulation stations (that I introduced with coding centres) - socialization time is great - add a maker space and watch out! Hands-on projects (like stained glass) still rule! #bcedchat
A9 I appreciate the micro breaks as I try to prevent my morning coffee from becoming an iced-variety.... but I also like stealing classes...so you never know! #bcedchat
#bcedchat A9: I've celebrated 40 years of marriage this year. I'm not looking for romance but will use this as a reminder to keep the romance alive in our relationship & not take anything for granted. She is so worth it.
I'm almost numbed by the cookie cutter movies on Hallmark
A9. Getter done before my flight departure to Vegas. A few projects on the go and things to prep for the new year. Would like to get those off my plate before spending some time with my family in the desert. #bcedchat
A9 and I appreciate @JanetChowMSc for setting things up for tonight’s #bcedchat so we could “play along” with all of you who make this Sunday night ritual a fabulous #PLN - looking forward to what 2019 will bring....
From all of us at #bcedchat we wish you the happiest of holiday wishes... We'll be back on SUN. JANUARY 6th 7pm PST on Wellness Strategies with @ChristineYH@JanetChowMSc
