The first Twitter edchat in the Philippines, helping teachers grow their PLN, use tech in the classroom and promoting a culture of teachers helping teachers.
Hello everyone. I’m Alfonso from the Philippines. I became a teacher because there was that one (or two) teacher who was really influential in my life. #edchatph
Plus, I can’t stand being in a desk all day.
Hi everyone. I'm Tonya from Richmond, VA, USA.I teach elementary Spanish and stud leadership. Wasn't planning to teach, was finishing span and archaeology degrees. Had to intern as ESL tutor as a senior experience and loved it! Can't imagine not being in a school now.
#edchatPH
Hi, #edchatph crew! I'm happy to be joining you all from Tokyo. I became a teacher because of the positive difference so many teachers made in my life when I was a child. I strive to do the same. 💖💖
Im Rizza your chat moderator, I became a teacher because of the wonderful teachers I had back in grade school and most in the family are teachers #edchatPH
Sharing the same sentiments. There’s always that great teacher who makes all the difference.
Great teachers need not be the best but they are the most influential and impactful. #edchatPH
I'm Mary from the Philippines, and am not a teacher of Ss, but a tech coach for teachers. I became one because so many Ts need help getting through their fear of tech, and to promote agency and better engagement in classrooms. #edchatPH
A1 by telling them this is the only job that pays you to go on summer breaks, term breaks, and Christmas breaks (at least for the PH).
Kidding aside, that’s a challenging question. #edchatph
A1: First, we should only seek to encourage others who have that passion within them. Not everyone is meant to be a teacher, and that's okay. Variety is a good thing. If the desire is there, we can encourage them by reaching out, sharing insights, and lending a hand. #edchatph
A1. We need to share the best of our profession. All the love we get from students daily, opportunities to growth, change kids lives, teach internationally, meet people from everywhere. #edchatPH
A1: We have to be honest with people considering teaching. Teaching's far from just playing with kids all day. Hands on experience in schools from the first semester of undergrad would help determine if a candidate is interested. It's not a job for everyone honestly
#edchatPH
Hello everyone, my name is Tony, and I'm from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I am not a teacher just yet but I am on track to graduate fairly soon. My main reason for wanting to become a teacher is because I want to make a difference in the young lives of those who need it. #edchatPH
A1.c we spend our entire day inspiring students, we can inspire adults & others by showing them how wonderful & dynamic being inside a classroom is. We can show them how much classrooms have changed since we left school. The beauty of technology and the wonders of PLNs #edchatph

A1: we need to #trendthepositive and share what being a teacher is all about. Making a difference in the life’s of others can be one of the most fulfilling experiences ever #edchatph
So true, Jim! And I really believe that those who come into teaching with rose colored glasses on are those who walk out the door the fastest. Immerse new teachers in struggling schools. Show reality. #edchatPH
A1: while we #trendthepositive we also have to fight for a better deal for the profession. Better pay, better work/life balance and better opportunities to learn and grow #edchatph
so true! Ours is such a complex system! we solve one, another challenge arises but we rise above all these challenges because of the amazing network we have #edchatPH
A1: while we #trendthepositive we also have to fight for a better deal for the profession. Better pay, better work/life balance and better opportunities to learn and grow #edchatph
And then they will be tested with the willpower to push and overcome the real life challenges in the classroom but of course with guidance and mentoring #edchatPH

A1: Inspiring students today by being the best we can be, is one good way for them to look at teaching as a career for them in the future. In the Phils, there is a bit of a stigma attached to teaching and that has to be changed. #edchatPH

Balance the negative comments about teaching with celebration of the positives. We can't ignore the challenges - they need addressing but too much focus currently on the bad things.
A2: little things make a big difference and every educator has the opportunity to impact at least one person in a positive way. Use your power for good one person at a time - a little goes a Long way #edchatPH
A2 Treat our peers with respect. Offer support when asked. Greet each other with titles in the hallway. Be courteous to each other in front of our students. Be kind. #edchatPH
A2: Walk the talk! Model what we teach. If we teach growth mindset, we live it. But more importantly, always put the learners at the center. Without them, there will be no teachers. #edchatPH
A2: We bring with us our own culture and character to every interaction. I choose to never put down colleagues, and try very hard not to be negative. I choose to be polite and try to elevate our profession with my comportment. We must be ambassadors for our profession! #edchatph
A2: Act and speak with dignity. Our integrity and values should shine through in all that we do. We have to show that we are truly there to do what's best for kids. https://t.co/u4aSQQEJz5#edchatph
A2. We are the first ones who need to think big about our profession. We are not less than lawyers or doctors, just as important and necessary. Let’s share that with others. Thoughts are contagious, like happiness. #edchatPH
A2 by acting like one. What we say and do online and offline leaves an impression on our student. As teachers we must always be truthful and respectful.
Answer is coming from an encounter with a teacher who sees his work as “I just want to be the cool teacher” #edchatph
A2: something little that has potential to make a HUGE positive impact is @EmpaticoOrg who connect and engage people for free globally - click here for more https://t.co/BRpGCBU34t#edchatPH

A1 By sharing how blessed I am as a Teacher. Showing to my students that I love to teach, talking to parents how proud I am as a Class adviser of their child and modelling professionalism. #edchatph
A2: I think consistent professionalism is huge. That goes for interactions w other teachers, parents, and the kids we teach. The nasty attitudes from some are just unbecoming to the profession overall. It's also important to be a teaching chameleon: always adapting! #edchatPH
That's one amazing aspect of #education now is collaborating globally! it has become doable but teachers need to realize how valuable it is to connect and provide opportunities for our students #edchatPH

A2: improving practice and the drive to do and be better. I love leading professional learning sessions with educators all over the world. The best sessions are always the ones where Teachers come prepared to learn and prepared to have their perspective challenged #edchatPH
A2. Doing whatever little things possible that will make the biggest difference. Always showing respect, always giving 110%, always practicing effective communication, being that role model teacher that a student will always remember after decades pass. #edchatPH
A2. We are the first ones who need to think big about our profession. We are not less than lawyers or doctors, just as important and necessary. Let’s share that with others. Thoughts are contagious, like happiness. #edchatPH
A2: Another thing: A balance of professionalism and personal care for the student. It’s maintaining a relationship and environment that let students grow and thrive. This is positive for teacher growth. #edchatph
Grit is really important. @ginoloko uses the quote, "You have to be out of your mind to teach." It's a huge responsibility to teach future problem solvers. We have no idea what problems they'll be facing. #edchatPH

A2 sharing what you know and helping other teachers along the way. Learning shouldn’t be exclusive to just one institution. Be the change and be the one to lead the conversations. #edchatph
You bet Tonya. I actually love coming across those people in my sessions - I make it my Mission to change their ways no matter how short my time is. If they do it with me, they probably are 10x worse to their colleagues #edchatPH
A2 The way I look, most of the time it's your look. You need to be confident but not cocky So when I'm entering the school I smile, I greet and I treat everyone fairly #edchatPH
I know a great teacher who doesn't drink coffee and I'm just amazed at how he gets through his day! I can't survive without a cuppa! #edchatPH@betchaboy
Love that you highlighted positive stories and impact! These changes the narrative of why we teachers teach - to celebrate all kinds of stories and create our own dent in the universe. #edchatph
so true Tonya! I've given PDs in my school but no one ever took the challenge to try what I shared, its sad because after the PD nothing happened #edchatPH
A2: Model what we teach. Also let's not be afraid to call out those with negative attitudes or habits who we believe affect how teachers are perceived overall. Filipinos in general are shy to say when they are offended, but it really helps to just say when we are. #edchatPH
In the same way that we prep for Ss engagement, we have to double the effort for Ts IMO. We thought it would be easy when we started, but turns out, it's so much harder because there are perceptions that need to be changed. #edchatPH#ProjectCultureShift

A2 Mentoring is one great way to model these positive attitudes, call out the negative ones even if it means they will feel uncomfortable with it #edchatPH
A3: I simultaneously agree with this statement and disagree with it. Trends do come and go - we don't need to hop onto fads, trends, and whims just because they are new. But also, we should change our minds/practices when good research/evidence comes along. #edchatPH
absolutely! we thought that teachers are open for those challenges because we are the one who guide and facilitate these learning experience for our students but Think again! #projectcultureshift#edchatPH

A3: Of course things come and go—that's because we are always learning! 💗 Some things that come also stay, too, though—like doing what's best for kids, focusing on critical thinking and inquiry, and building a foundation with kindness and relationships. #edchatph
Quality education for all means to start with quality education for Teachers. We need to reach every T especially those in remote areas where guidance, encouragement and inspiration are needed the most. #edchatPH#TENph
A3: With all honesty, I can always say: you’re not supposed to follow trends, but you have to make decisions that will make learning better!” I think @teacherforest@TeacherMarkJam can imagine my voice saying that straightforward. #edchatPH

@rizzapiccio, @teacherforest, @TeacherMarkJam
so true! and we should be open for new things! if its doesn't work for so many years, why still do it? I guess this is a challenge whatever school we are a part of #edchatPH
A3 they do. But it’s up to you on how you adopt those trends inside your classroom to make you a better teacher and to ensure your students also become better. #edchatph

A3: Thank god trends in education come and go or we'd still be encouraging rote memorization and smacking kids on the hands with rulers for giving us wrong answers! The bottom line to me is: be discerning, try it if you want and trash it if it doesn't work.
#edchatPH
A3 besides, if we were to follow all the trends in education then we would never get anything done. A lot of those trends are just bells and whistles, a good teacher and institution needs to be able to highlight and really study it before implementing #edchatph
A3: Adaptability is essential because technology has changed the pace of these edu trends. However, our core values remain the same. So long as we keep to a growth mindset, we don't run the risk of being stagnant. #edchatPH

I really go back and forth on this. New doesn't always equal better, and some of the best schools I know of are really old school, very little technology, with lots of traditional style teaching. I think they are innovative in their own ways as well! #edchatPH

A3 True, pick some, learn from it read feedbacks and infuse your own judgement that best fits the learning objectives for your learners - at the end of the day that's the goal they should learn #edchatPH

A4: If they want to leave because it's not for them, that's fine (and best for kids!)—but we need to advocate for teachers to be treated as professionals with incredible skills and expertise. Teachers shouldn't leave due to being undervalued and disrespected. #edchatph
I agree. A balance of both. Hence, it’s not always about newness, strategy or tech. It’s about teachers being willing to change or make changes that will lead to better learning and teaching. #edchatph
A4: Don't let teaching become your only thing. Eliminate as much paperwork for yourself as possible. Work out!! Don't let angry parents get you down, but always empathize. Don't answer emails past a set hour. Listen with a fully present heart to your students stories.

A4: Pay them better. Not just monetarily, but understand the importance of teacher well being. For administrators, make sure the teachers are cared for - mentally & physically. #edchatPH
Talking straight to me! I needed a work out! hahaha but really THANK YOU for this insights! if only all teachers are willing to be connected and join #edchats lots of mind opening thoughts here #edchatPH

Good point. There can be lots of pressure to change your teaching though in circumstances where there really isn't a lot of evidence to back up the pedagogy/technology/strategy. We need to be careful to recognize this! #edchatph .@effortfuleduktr writes a ton about this!
