Welcome to #LostAtNPS Lost At School Book Study Please give a shout out to let us know you're here + ONE WORD to describe your thoughts on our book, Lost At School, thus far.
#LostAtNPS
Ok- I think that Plan B is perfect as it puts teacher and student together to solve the problem. It shows empathy as well as staying keeping the classroom in order.
I'm excited to participate in the discussion. I think because of our small numbers and having an assistant available can process with students more easily. But Plan B is so empowering for all students! #LostAtNPS
Q1: As Ts, we are often Plan A inclined. We may have a tendency to feel solely responsible for “solving the problems/challenges” we experience in our classrooms. Share one benefit and one challenge you foresee in your school day as we attempt to embrace Plan B. #LostAtNPS
A1. Benefit = Healthy Environment for All. I love including student voice to find solutions. Challenge = Changing Thinking. Need to change Mr. Armstrong's way of thinking. #LostAtNPS
A1: One benefit is knowing that a high number of colleagues are also participating in the book study and can be a resource/support to me as I learn. A challenge is time for connecting w/ colleagues. Will need to be clever and creative. #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS
I think as a positive we work together as a team to come up with a solutions. The negative is classroom management as we have in my case 24 other students to educate in my class
A1 I think the benefit of a good Plan B is that the child is involved in the problem solving process. Which means they are learning strategies to help themselves, the challenge, as always, is finding the time to do it right.#LostAtNPS
A1: I love everything about Plan B but, for the middle school, time will be a challenge. You want to make sure you are doing it right and taking time to make a comprehensive plan. The time put it will be worth it in the end. #lostatnps
A1. One benefit is that we as a district are putting SEL in the forefront right now. This is going to help drive conversations in the right direction! One challenge is time to collaborate and put heads together to solve issues #LostAtNPS
A1: Challenge and benefit are the same...teacher and student taking on new roles..a shift in our "normal" mindset of how/ who solves the problems! T and Ss wearing new hats! #LostAtNPS
A1: The chance to collaboratively problem solve is a definite benefit. The challenge I foresee is time. Time spent with Ss needs to be quality time free from distraction. #LostAtNPS
A1: Benefit: Fostering positive relationships. Challenge= getting staff not involved in this study on board. We might be willing to shift our thinking and approaches but others may not. #LostAtNPS
A1: One of the huge benefits of using plan B is collaboration with others including the Ss. I also see collaboration as an initial challenge for those that truly do believe they have to manage it all alone #LostAtNPS
A1: Benefit - having colleagues on the same page and as resources. Challenge - time (isn't it always?) and parent participation/follow through can be challenging. #LostAtNPS
A1 A challenge will be finding the time to be able to collaborte with a team to provide the best for the student. Benefits the student will learn that he/she is valued and someone cares. #LostAtNPS
A1: I feel like as teachers we are always quick to try to solve the problem. However, by involving the student and other staff we can address the problem at the route instead of putting a bandaid on it. Also the student may feel more empowered! #LostAtNPS
Q1-A1 benefit: There are so many of us in this book study that our enthusiasm &. knowledge will be infectious in NPS. Challenge:There are going to be times when we need to bite our tongue to break old habits. #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS A1-a benefit to a Plan B approach within my school is the ability to work collaboratively; the challenge, as commented in this weeks ?s is the time factor-time to feel secure in our skill, time to set a plan in motion
#LostAtNPS That's a good point... we've seen this kind of challenge with curriculum related groups as well. Fortunately, the members of this group seem excited and positive and hopefully that enthusiasm will spread easily.
A1 #LostAtNPS I was able 2'do my 1st Plan B yesterday 4 a student & then again for my own son. The benefit was an instant feeling of calmness & relief...like this was the "start" of relieving a chunk of stress. The negative was wishing I had started doing Plan B's 20 years ago!
I'm strategizing the implementation of plan B without formally going into ALSUP for now. Although I have already had brief chats with students with challenging behavior, I intend to devote a set time every so often to "think together" about ways to improve their performance.

I was thinking the same thing. Definitely, something we need to prioritize. As we make the shift it will flow more easily but still need time. #LostAtNPS
As a "just thinking," I visited Medfield yesterday and was shocked to find out teachers did not have to do duties! Perhaps this could be a common time to conduct these team collaborations? #LostAtNPS
A1. Hi all. Late to the party! Sorry. I think plan b is perfect. Without a student’s voice in the solution I don’t see how we can get anywhere. #LostAtNPS
Q2: Let’s talk Plan C. Dr. Greene reminds us on p. 57 that C does not stand for “Caving” but that is more of a “first things first” plan. What language can we use to keep administrators, teachers, parents and students all on the same page? #LostAtNPS
A2. Maybe we could have a protocol so that when Ts have a Plan C situation, rather than just letting the S sit during work refusal, the S has to complete a quick form about their emotions at that particular moment. Something to look at when developing Plan B as team.
#LostAtNPS
A2: Plan C is where we identify an unsolved problem and table it TEMPORARILY... not to be confused with "giving in". It's the pitstop. It's the pause 2 allow prioritization 2 the immediate present B4 the collaborative hard work of a long term Plan B is done. #LostAtNPS
I also think that we need to be sure to spend time really getting to KNOW our students, strengths, weaknesses, things they like, etc... we will have more trusting relationships with them and can catch things before they escalate. #LostAtNPS
Q2: By dropping an expectation the student may be better able to focus on the larger picture. I have a student that when too much is on his plate his anxiety and behaviors increase. By removing one or two things he is much more successful. #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS. A2- Working with the student to prioritize things that need to get done in the moment can help keep everyone working on the same page, one thing at a time.
A-2 #LostAtNPS We want to encourage insight, self-awareness and foster learning for students. Successful outcomes can reduce challenging behaviors. #lostatnps
Responsiveness and knowing your Ss is the key to regaining access to learning when tricky times bubble up. We take things off the plate, find the re-balance and begin again. #MakesSense#LostAtNPS

A2: We want to make sure we devote time to make sure all unsolved problems are addressed. We want to make sure to do it right and not rush. Taking on too much benefits no one. We want realistic and long term outcomes #LostAtNPS
I also think that we need to be sure to spend time really getting to KNOW our students, strengths, weaknesses, things they like, etc... we will have more trusting relationships with them and can catch things before they escalate. #LostAtNPS
A2: Another word could be possibly committing! We realize as educators we are all committed to our students succeeding and try all resources we have and know! Sometimes, Plan C is what is needed! #LostAtNPS
A2 I agree with prioritizing. I think it helps student to avoid work refusal if the unsolved problems can be prioritized and taken on in small chunks. #LostAtNPS
A2: I like what @ZajacSLP said about it being a pit stop. I could not agree more. It's a stoppage for unexpected behaviors so the student can almost take a time out and breathe (which helps us to do the same really) while correctly and quickly prioritizing imp. tasks #LostAtNPS
One benefit-Confidence. I use a three-step approach by asking the students involved 3 quick questions to answer in one sentence. 1. What are the facts? 2. What is the impact on each other? What is the plan for the future that you both can agree on? Challenge- time #LostAtNPS
A2: Another word could be possibly committing! We realize as educators we are all committed to our students succeeding and try all resources we have and know! Sometimes, Plan C is what is needed! #LostAtNPS
#lostatnps A2: I don't feel all that uncomfortable with Plan C. As adults, don't we have to do this in our lives? I know I do. I pick my battles and address each situation/challenge/ event in a manner that is manageable. I don't feel like I'm giving in or losing out.
A2 Invested in the student to help them feel comfortable in talking to you about their feelings, and the staff needs to remember patience, and to give the student space and time to respond #LostAtNPS
Q2-A2: we need to work on higher priority problems-some need to be set aside for time being. This reminds me of parenting -“pick your battles”. Or like helping a student edit work-focus on a few things -don’t overwhelm w/edits. #LostAtNPS
Ss can feel when a commitment is real and holds water. I totally agree that it is a a very big part of what can help make Plan C not be mistaken as a Caving in but rather a positive step forward! #LostAtNPS
A2: I would say Permission. We need to give ourselves PERMISSION to put social/emotional/behavioral first! Permission to take 5 minutes with the students. Permission to put the lesson plan aside. Permission to take risks #lostatNPS
#LostatNPS A2. I know I’m overwhelmed by all of the issues that certain kids have- I’m sure they are completely overwhelmed as well. By prioritizing these issues, small wins early will lead to bigger wins in the future.
I was thinking the same thing. There are only so many hours in a day, so I prioritize what I put on my to do list for work and home. Kids can learn this skill too. #LostAtNPS

A1: A benefit would be decreasing potential student blow-ups. A challenge is carving that 1 to 1 time out during the school day when you are with approx. 20 other kids. I like the idea of asking for coverage when the time is needed. #LostAtNPS
This is great stuff Jen! The sequence and the simplicity of the language can really help all students understand and participate in the process. #LostATNPS
Q3: “Unsolved Problems” are simply unmet expectations (Specific, Free of Maladaptive Behavior, Theories, Explanations). Provide an example of an “Unsolved Problem” you noticed in a student this week. #LostAtNPS
I think for special education using the system of progress reports allows us to identify a skill that needs addressing and comment on a plans to address it during the next trimester or quarter. #LostAtNPS
A3. First let me say that this full moon stuff is FOR REAL! Kids were off-the-wall today. Can't fix the phases of the moon. My answer to Q3 coming in a minute.
#LostAtNPS
100% @MrsMcGarryNMS This is SOOOO important. Open lines of communication are essential to any team working together, any plan coming to fruition or goal attained. #LostAtNPS
A2: BREATHE... breathe in for seven seconds and breathe out for 8, helps calm the mind, bp, etc. I use this with students when needed , it helps. Positive language is also key, I always say "we" when there is a problem so the student knows I'm with them #LostAtNPS
A3: I have seen students stuck and not able to transition. Sometimes leaving work unfinished is challenging. Finding ways to teach Ss that coming back to finish at a later time is okay. #LostAtNps
Q3: “Unsolved Problems” are simply unmet expectations (Specific, Free of Maladaptive Behavior, Theories, Explanations). Provide an example of an “Unsolved Problem” you noticed in a student this week. #LostAtNPS
A3: the biggest unsolved problem I have seen this week in a struggling student is them not getting work completed and made up since December. They have been struggling with anxiety, school attendance and just doing school work in general. Still trying to help them! #LostAtNPS
A2: I would say Permission. We need to give ourselves PERMISSION to put social/emotional/behavioral first! Permission to take 5 minutes with the students. Permission to put the lesson plan aside. Permission to take risks #lostatNPS

A2: Communication - if a Plan is going to change or shift (to Plan C), all parties need to be on board and invested. The new plan will not be successful if participants are approaching the situation with different plans in mind. #allonthesamepage#LostAtNPS
A3. #LostAtNPS there is a S who is going through some real heavy emotions lately and crying A LOT! I had a good relationship with the family and this S in the past so I am trying to be a support for her even though she isn’t “mine”
A3 #LostatNPS His behaviors have gone from poking 100 holes in his test paper to purposefully shredding a homework paper into 100 pieces, to writing cryptic messages on his ELA Warm-Up. It was time for a Plan B...without the official paperwork. I had to address his anger quickly.
Q4: With respect to Q3 and the need for using objective language to describe “Unsolved Problems”, share a bit on how easy or challenging you found the task of putting into words the said “Unsolved Problem” w/o alluding to maladaptive behavior, a theory or explanation? #LostAtNPS
A3-so hard- even though I thought I prepped , since I was leaving for a CET- rolling on floor, running around, etc. -a work in progress for us both-we'll get there-#LostAtNPS
A4: I find it can be especially challenging to maintain objectivity when trying to describe an unsolved problem immediately after the "situation" has happened. I find it is helpful to jot down observations, wait a a bit &return to it with a neutralized mindset. #LostAtNPS
A-4 #LostAtNPS It was very challenging not describing the challenging behavior and my thoughts on why the student behaved the way that he did in class.
Q3 I have a student who has another close friend in class and they often partner. One likes to present in front of others the other gets very self-conscious. Any ideas? The only current agreement is the self-conscious student chooses to leave the room. #LostAtNPS
A4 This can be difficult at SPED team meeting where there is a great emphasis (spoken or unspoken) on a child's diagnosis. It is still important, even around the table to speak objectively abpiy skill deficits #LostAtNPS
Q4A4 HARD I want to solve everything when it happens, but I know I need to figure out what provoke the behavior first, because that could be the underlying problem, and most often is. #LostAtNPS
A4: I completely agree with @ZajacSLP that staying objective is key. Walk away for a minute, breathe, take notes. Come back to it when you can look at it objectively. Talking it through with a colleague helps me when I get "stuck." #LostAtNPS
Yes,I love that they've been signed and we are all to go forth and take the educated, calculated risks/trials needed to learn and make progress as we go! We are a thankful district for the permission granted. #LostAtNPS
A4: For students that rely on routine, any changes can throw them for a loop. It is easier to address it class by class, observing what causes the shut down. Its very challenging not to address behavior with a "reason." It is a definite change in mindset. #LostAtNPS
A4. #lostatnps looking back at what I wrote, I still had some assumptions in there. It’s definitely difficult! Especially when you are right up in it and want to be there to support your colleagues

#LostAtNPS A4 I must say the thought of ecolalia would not have crossed my mind had it not been for the parent this afternoon which has now adjusted my thought process as pertains to this S
#LostAtNps Thank you everyone for joining the chat tonight! You are all rock stars!!! See you next week as we discuss: Week 4 (3/2-3/8): Chapter 4- Let’s Get It Started, pp. 78-119!
A4 #LostatNPS To my student I said, "I wanted to chat with you to see if I could try to help. It seems like you've been pretty angry lately. I totally get how hard it is to feel angry. I don't want you to be feeling like that. What can I do to help you?"
I always gain insight from other colleagues re: students behavior bc I see Ss in a small group, sometimes individually and not every day, the classroom teachers are a great resource #LostAtNPS

A4: Keeping objectivity was a bit tough. We educators, by nature, are "fixers", so we want to know what the problem is so we can fix it. We sometimes jump to a conclusion or assumption of "why" and let that guide our response. #LostAtNPS
A4- The language of the ALSUP helps. Reading the book makes me realize I more often than not I jump to the why with a because in my head w/o checking with the student on the behaviors that I can table. It's the behaviors that interfere with learning that I use Plan B. #LostAtNPS
A4: This is definitely a challenge because often times I find myself thinking of past students with similar behaviors. I have to remind myself that each child is unique in the behaviors they exhibit. #LostAtNPS
