#LostAtNPS Ok- I think that Plan B is perfect as it puts teacher and student together to solve the problem. It shows empathy as well as staying keeping the classroom in order.
  • MrsMcGarryNMS Mar 1 @ 8:31 PM EST

I'm excited to participate in the discussion. I think because of our small numbers and having an assistant available can process with students more easily. But Plan B is so empowering for all students! #LostAtNPS

Q1: As Ts, we are often Plan A inclined. We may have a tendency to feel solely responsible for “solving the problems/challenges” we experience in our classrooms. Share one benefit and one challenge you foresee in your school day as we attempt to embrace Plan B. #LostAtNPS
  • MrsMcGarryNMS Mar 1 @ 8:38 PM EST
No way! I love hyphens. We’re stretching our minds, not the truth. 😉#LostAtNPS

A1. Benefit = Healthy Environment for All. I love including student voice to find solutions. Challenge = Changing Thinking. Need to change Mr. Armstrong's way of thinking. #LostAtNPS
  • JeniferCarline Mar 1 @ 8:38 PM EST
My word: timely (as in I’m glad I’m not letting any more years go by in my teaching career without feeling empowered with this knowledge)#LostAtNPS

  • ZajacSLP Mar 1 @ 8:39 PM EST
A1: One benefit is knowing that a high number of colleagues are also participating in the book study and can be a resource/support to me as I learn. A challenge is time for connecting w/ colleagues. Will need to be clever and creative. #LostAtNPS
  • NPSPPS Mar 1 @ 8:39 PM EST

A1: Plan B shares the load. We are not islands, we are a community. #LostAtNPS

  • JSullivan031 Mar 1 @ 8:40 PM EST
    My one word- inspiring! #LostAtNPS
  • EmilieOTR Mar 1 @ 8:40 PM EST
#lostatnps A-1 Plan B benefit is teaching students to learn adaptive skills with the mutual support of adults.
  • horton_sara Mar 1 @ 8:40 PM EST
#LostAtNPS I think as a positive we work together as a team to come up with a solutions. The negative is classroom management as we have in my case 24 other students to educate in my class
  • catherineluke49 Mar 1 @ 8:40 PM EST
A1: Plan B includes multiple minds and voices. #LostAtNPS
  • MrsBresnahanNMS Mar 1 @ 8:40 PM EST
Benefit- student involvement and figuring out lacking skills. Challenge - getting the time to collaborate. #LostAtNPS
  • MrsMcGarryNMS Mar 1 @ 8:40 PM EST
@JeniferCarline is adding words with parentheses and I’m getting heckled for using a hyphen! Come on! 😂@alisontosches #LostAtNPS

My word: timely (as in I’m glad I’m not letting any more years go by in my teaching career without feeling empowered with this knowledge)#LostAtNPS
  • diana_savage Mar 1 @ 8:40 PM EST
A1 I think the benefit of a good Plan B is that the child is involved in the problem solving process. Which means they are learning strategies to help themselves, the challenge, as always, is finding the time to do it right.#LostAtNPS
  • alisontosches Mar 1 @ 8:40 PM EST
A1: I love everything about Plan B but, for the middle school, time will be a challenge. You want to make sure you are doing it right and taking time to make a comprehensive plan. The time put it will be worth it in the end. #lostatnps
  • MsTaylorsOwls Mar 1 @ 8:41 PM EST
A1. One benefit is that we as a district are putting SEL in the forefront right now. This is going to help drive conversations in the right direction! One challenge is time to collaborate and put heads together to solve issues #LostAtNPS
  • jessica_iozzi Mar 1 @ 8:41 PM EST
A1: Challenge and benefit are the same...teacher and student taking on new roles..a shift in our "normal" mindset of how/ who solves the problems! T and Ss wearing new hats! #LostAtNPS
  • jcteachfirsties Mar 1 @ 8:41 PM EST
A1: The chance to collaboratively problem solve is a definite benefit. The challenge I foresee is time. Time spent with Ss needs to be quality time free from distraction. #LostAtNPS
  • Megberry74 Mar 1 @ 8:41 PM EST
A1 Benefit: collaboration among staff in helping a student become successful. Challenge: Time consuming, (but worth the time). #LostAtNPS
  • nnunes30 Mar 1 @ 8:41 PM EST
A1: Benefit: Fostering positive relationships. Challenge= getting staff not involved in this study on board. We might be willing to shift our thinking and approaches but others may not. #LostAtNPS
  • KimBray03 Mar 1 @ 8:41 PM EST
#LostAtNPS A1 benefit - involving the student in the process, is respectful of the student. Challenge - time
  • NPSPPS Mar 1 @ 8:42 PM EST
A1: One of the huge benefits of using plan B is collaboration with others including the Ss. I also see collaboration as an initial challenge for those that truly do believe they have to manage it all alone #LostAtNPS
  • C_McDonough2018 Mar 1 @ 8:43 PM EST
A1: Benefit - having colleagues on the same page and as resources. Challenge - time (isn't it always?) and parent participation/follow through can be challenging. #LostAtNPS
  • MrsCarriereLGN Mar 1 @ 8:43 PM EST
A1 A challenge will be finding the time to be able to collaborte with a team to provide the best for the student. Benefits the student will learn that he/she is valued and someone cares. #LostAtNPS
  • NPSPPS Mar 1 @ 8:43 PM EST
I agree. Also sticking it out when it seems to be hard. #LostAtNPS
    In reply to @mrsbaeta, @ZajacSLP
  • EmilieOTR Mar 1 @ 8:43 PM EST
The rest of A-1 Challenge is Team agreeing on which are high priorities and which are low and can be taught later. #lostatnps
  • RWhelan258 Mar 1 @ 8:43 PM EST
A1: I feel like as teachers we are always quick to try to solve the problem. However, by involving the student and other staff we can address the problem at the route instead of putting a bandaid on it. Also the student may feel more empowered! #LostAtNPS
  • JeniferCarline Mar 1 @ 8:44 PM EST
Q1-A1 benefit: There are so many of us in this book study that our enthusiasm &. knowledge will be infectious in NPS. Challenge:There are going to be times when we need to bite our tongue to break old habits. #LostAtNPS
  • SLP_HAY Mar 1 @ 8:45 PM EST
#LostAtNPS A1-a benefit to a Plan B approach within my school is the ability to work collaboratively; the challenge, as commented in this weeks ?s is the time factor-time to feel secure in our skill, time to set a plan in motion
  • horton_sara Mar 1 @ 8:45 PM EST
#LostAtNPS As I am reading our educators posts- one underlying theme is time. What can we do to make this work? Admin any advice?
  • LisaLovesmr Mar 1 @ 8:46 PM EST
#LostAtNPS That's a good point... we've seen this kind of challenge with curriculum related groups as well. Fortunately, the members of this group seem excited and positive and hopefully that enthusiasm will spread easily.
    In reply to @nnunes30
  • MrsCorreiraHAY Mar 1 @ 8:46 PM EST
A1 #LostAtNPS I was able 2'do my 1st Plan B yesterday 4 a student & then again for my own son. The benefit was an instant feeling of calmness & relief...like this was the "start" of relieving a chunk of stress. The negative was wishing I had started doing Plan B's 20 years ago!
  • ZajacSLP Mar 1 @ 8:48 PM EST
#ThinkingTogether The new way of collaborating, empowering and making positive shifts with a common goal! #LostAtNPS
    • mgodfreynhs Mar 1 @ 8:46 PM EST
I'm strategizing the implementation of plan B without formally going into ALSUP for now. Although I have already had brief chats with students with challenging behavior, I intend to devote a set time every so often to "think together" about ways to improve their performance.
      In reply to @ZajacSLP
  • MrsLyonsNPS Mar 1 @ 8:48 PM EST
A1: Benefit - the building of deeper, more understanding and productive relationships; Challenge - time....constructive, uninterrupted time #LostAtNPS
  • mgodfreynhs Mar 1 @ 8:48 PM EST

I was thinking the same thing. Definitely, something we need to prioritize. As we make the shift it will flow more easily but still need time. #LostAtNPS

  • nnunes30 Mar 1 @ 8:49 PM EST
As a "just thinking," I visited Medfield yesterday and was shocked to find out teachers did not have to do duties! Perhaps this could be a common time to conduct these team collaborations? #LostAtNPS

  • meglafayette Mar 1 @ 8:49 PM EST
A1. Hi all. Late to the party! Sorry. I think plan b is perfect. Without a student’s voice in the solution I don’t see how we can get anywhere. #LostAtNPS
  • ZajacSLP Mar 1 @ 8:50 PM EST
Q2: Let’s talk Plan C. Dr. Greene reminds us on p. 57 that C does not stand for “Caving” but that is more of a “first things first” plan. What language can we use to keep administrators, teachers, parents and students all on the same page? #LostAtNPS
  • MrsKearney_NHS Mar 1 @ 8:50 PM EST
##LostAtNPS I'm here! My word is a hyphenated one, lol. Thought-provoking.
  • catherineluke49 Mar 1 @ 8:50 PM EST
Parlay this process into something we already do such as IST. Just thinking... #LostAtNPS

#LostAtNPS As I am reading our educators posts- one underlying theme is time. What can we do to make this work? Admin any advice?
  • JSkowronekNMS Mar 1 @ 8:50 PM EST
A2. Maybe we could have a protocol so that when Ts have a Plan C situation, rather than just letting the S sit during work refusal, the S has to complete a quick form about their emotions at that particular moment. Something to look at when developing Plan B as team. #LostAtNPS
  • ZajacSLP Mar 1 @ 8:51 PM EST
A2: Plan C is where we identify an unsolved problem and table it TEMPORARILY... not to be confused with "giving in". It's the pitstop. It's the pause 2 allow prioritization 2 the immediate present B4 the collaborative hard work of a long term Plan B is done. #LostAtNPS
  • MrsCorreiraHAY Mar 1 @ 8:51 PM EST
    A2 #LostatNPS Rome wasn't built in a day!!! :)

A2: Remembering to revisit the "tabled" problems...setting a flexible time line with open communication #LostAtNPS
  • NPSPPS Mar 1 @ 8:52 PM EST
I also think that we need to be sure to spend time really getting to KNOW our students, strengths, weaknesses, things they like, etc... we will have more trusting relationships with them and can catch things before they escalate. #LostAtNPS
    In reply to @horton_sara
  • RWhelan258 Mar 1 @ 8:52 PM EST
Q2: By dropping an expectation the student may be better able to focus on the larger picture. I have a student that when too much is on his plate his anxiety and behaviors increase. By removing one or two things he is much more successful. #LostAtNPS
  • MrsKearney_NHS Mar 1 @ 8:52 PM EST
#LostAtNPS. A2- Working with the student to prioritize things that need to get done in the moment can help keep everyone working on the same page, one thing at a time.
  • jessica_iozzi Mar 1 @ 8:52 PM EST
A2 "Prioritizing" what is important ... Working on the bigger issues and the small things can wait. #LostAtNPS
  • EmilieOTR Mar 1 @ 8:53 PM EST
A-2 #LostAtNPS We want to encourage insight, self-awareness and foster learning for students. Successful outcomes can reduce challenging behaviors. #lostatnps
  • jcteachfirsties Mar 1 @ 8:53 PM EST
  • ZajacSLP Mar 1 @ 8:54 PM EST
Responsiveness and knowing your Ss is the key to regaining access to learning when tricky times bubble up. We take things off the plate, find the re-balance and begin again. #MakesSense #LostAtNPS

    In reply to @ZajacSLP

Building on that success would be key. Perhaps the things that got tabled would come next. #LostAtNPS

    In reply to @ZajacSLP
  • MrsKearney_NHS Mar 1 @ 8:54 PM EST
#LostAtNPS A2. Meant to add trying to phrase things using positive language, i.e. "what CAN we do," " how can I help you, " etc.
  • alisontosches Mar 1 @ 8:54 PM EST
A2: We want to make sure we devote time to make sure all unsolved problems are addressed. We want to make sure to do it right and not rush. Taking on too much benefits no one. We want realistic and long term outcomes #LostAtNPS
  • ZajacSLP Mar 1 @ 8:55 PM EST

A2 Plan C allows for us to stop and think and then proceed with a better plan that is S involved. #LostAtNPS
  • MrsBenoitNMS Mar 1 @ 8:55 PM EST
A2: Another word could be possibly committing! We realize as educators we are all committed to our students succeeding and try all resources we have and know! Sometimes, Plan C is what is needed! #LostAtNPS
  • meglafayette Mar 1 @ 8:56 PM EST
A2 I agree with prioritizing. I think it helps student to avoid work refusal if the unsolved problems can be prioritized and taken on in small chunks. #LostAtNPS
  • nnunes30 Mar 1 @ 8:56 PM EST
A2: I like what @ZajacSLP said about it being a pit stop. I could not agree more. It's a stoppage for unexpected behaviors so the student can almost take a time out and breathe (which helps us to do the same really) while correctly and quickly prioritizing imp. tasks #LostAtNPS
  • ZajacSLP Mar 1 @ 8:56 PM EST
#Empowerment. The power of words is HUGE! #LostATNPS

#LostAtNPS A2. Meant to add trying to phrase things using positive language, i.e. "what CAN we do," " how can I help you, " etc.
  • JSullivan031 Mar 1 @ 8:56 PM EST
One benefit-Confidence. I use a three-step approach by asking the students involved 3 quick questions to answer in one sentence. 1. What are the facts? 2. What is the impact on each other? What is the plan for the future that you both can agree on? Challenge- time #LostAtNPS
  • NPSPPS Mar 1 @ 8:56 PM EST
A2: Communication is so important. If all team members know the Plan B for the Ss that should be aware of the priorities. #LostAtNPS
  • MrsBenoitNMS Mar 1 @ 8:57 PM EST
Late getting here! One word that comes to mind for me is - opportunity! #LostAtNPS

  • LisaLovesmr Mar 1 @ 8:58 PM EST
#lostatnps A2: I don't feel all that uncomfortable with Plan C. As adults, don't we have to do this in our lives? I know I do. I pick my battles and address each situation/challenge/ event in a manner that is manageable. I don't feel like I'm giving in or losing out.
  • Megberry74 Mar 1 @ 8:58 PM EST
A2 Invested in the student to help them feel comfortable in talking to you about their feelings, and the staff needs to remember patience, and to give the student space and time to respond #LostAtNPS
  • MrsMcGarryNMS Mar 1 @ 8:58 PM EST
  • JeniferCarline Mar 1 @ 8:58 PM EST
Q2-A2: we need to work on higher priority problems-some need to be set aside for time being. This reminds me of parenting -“pick your battles”. Or like helping a student edit work-focus on a few things -don’t overwhelm w/edits. #LostAtNPS
  • ZajacSLP Mar 1 @ 8:59 PM EST
Ss can feel when a commitment is real and holds water. I totally agree that it is a a very big part of what can help make Plan C not be mistaken as a Caving in but rather a positive step forward! #LostAtNPS
    In reply to @MrsBenoitNMS
  • MsTaylorsOwls Mar 1 @ 8:59 PM EST
A2: I would say Permission. We need to give ourselves PERMISSION to put social/emotional/behavioral first! Permission to take 5 minutes with the students. Permission to put the lesson plan aside. Permission to take risks #lostatNPS
  • biochemnhs Mar 1 @ 8:59 PM EST
#LostatNPS A2. I know I’m overwhelmed by all of the issues that certain kids have- I’m sure they are completely overwhelmed as well. By prioritizing these issues, small wins early will lead to bigger wins in the future.

A2 It is also.important to discuss with all parties that we sre prioritizing the areas of need with Plan C, not forgetting them.#LostAtNPS
  • MrsBenoitNMS Mar 1 @ 9:01 PM EST
A1: A benefit would be decreasing potential student blow-ups. A challenge is carving that 1 to 1 time out during the school day when you are with approx. 20 other kids. I like the idea of asking for coverage when the time is needed. #LostAtNPS
  • ZajacSLP Mar 1 @ 9:01 PM EST
This is great stuff Jen! The sequence and the simplicity of the language can really help all students understand and participate in the process. #LostATNPS

A2: BREATHE... breathe in for seven seconds and breathe out for 8, helps calm the mind, bp, etc. I use this with students when needed , it helps. Positive language is also key, I always say "we" when there is a problem so the student knows I'm with them #LostAtNPS
  • catherineluke49 Mar 1 @ 9:04 PM EST
