Hey #NoVAedchat! It's time to chat! I know this time of year feels you may feel like a hamster in a wheel but this is a time to take a break and recharge!
Hi all! I'm Jordyn Pistilli. I'm a ss PST studying at Grove City College but I grew up in Vienna, VA and graduated from James Madison HS in 2016. Happy to be here #novaedchat
I wish! Finals start next week. Figured I'd take a study break and tune in to the chat. I'm looking forward to being back in NoVA for the summer! #novaedchat
A1: Working with teachers to see if there is an opportunity for me to visit their classroom to engage in collaborative learning opportunities with students. #NoVAedchat
A1 Lots of chances to work together and not just presenting! We have to communicate in so many ways. I communicate with students through email, through social media, in person. Lots of chances to practice! #NoVAedchat
A1 @Flipgridhas been my number one this year. But also, kicking it old school and just having people share what’s happening in their classrooms. #NoVAedchat
I've played around with @flipgrid and @padlet in some of my ed classes here at Grove City College. I especially love padlet for those higher level questions that help Ss get to a higher level of Bloom's taxonomy #novaedchat

A1 We use @GoogleForEdu Classroom a lot in my class. We also have opportunities for turn and talks as well as opportunities to collaborate in PBL Projects #NoVAedchat
A1: Great ways to have Ss share their thinking and learning is through PBL's, number talks, Genius Hour. @Flipgrid , @padlet (before the changes), and Google Classroom have bee great resources to show student work. #novaedchat
A1 Building in some structures in meetings and trainings for folks to talk and share, works the same in classrooms. So important. LEAVE TIME for reflecting and sharing!! #NoVAedchat
A1: I’ve really utilized station rotation models this year. It fits beautifully with blended learning, PBL, and tying POG skills through it all! Google apps allow Ss to do it all! #NoVAedchat
A1: I love having Ss work together when practicing their music, helping eachother along the way. Also try to have S leaders for a few minutes each ensemble rehearsal - great to work on communication and musical skills! 🎶 #NovaEdChat
A2: The same complaints seem to come up every time a collab proj is assigned "I always end up doing all the work," "I work better alone," "So-and-so is always taking charge of everything" these reasons make Ss resent collaborative learning #novaedchat
A2: A challenge that can be avoided, but it seems we always forget is Ss need to be taught how to collaborate together. If we spend the beginning of the year/semester "setting the stage" for what collaboration looks like in your room you will avoid this challenge. #novaedchat
A2: Challenges: some just want to sit there and watch! They have to be taught to work together. It's an important skill though, so worth the time to teach. #NovaEdChat
Most students know how to collaborate, just not necessarily in the very structured way that teachers expect. If two kids share a strong interest in something, they will find a way to work together. Likely that’s NOT school math. :-) #NoVaEdChat
How might we set students up for success ahead of time? Relationships and behavior expectations must be strong before these challenges ease @jordyn_pistilli#NOVAedchat

Absolutely! If you can connect to the Ss, build that TEAM atmosphere in your room, and then show them what is expected this becomes less of an issue. It won't totally go away, but you can lessen it's impact. #NoVAedchat
I’ve started making @Flipgrid topics for participants to leave aha moments, reflections, or follow up questions, after attending my sessions. It’s been helpful for me and the participants. #NoVaEdChat
I suspect you’ll changes in other edtech services as these often underfunded companies struggle with the cost of new data security and privacy requirements. #NoVaEdChat

@NoVAEdChat A2 the same challenges for teaching anything! Ss are all at different places and need explicit instruction to target her needs! #novaedchat
I couldn't agree more. A healthy classroom environment must be established first. Maybe have Ss come up w/ their own expectations for each other after grouping them but before the project officially begins #novaedchat
A3: Ss and families must see the practical application of these 21st Century skills...how they relate to "real life." That will help the changes make sense to them #NovaEdChat
A3: Inviting individuals to come into the classroom and see the learning in action. Also having the Ss share their learning with a larger audience. #NoVAedChat
A3: We can help Ss and Ts see the importance of the "ALL Century Skills" (not just 21st Century skills) by inviting them to Family Engagement Nights. Class webpages, Teacher Class Twitter accounts where you share examples of things happening in your classroom. #novaedchat
As the amazing @timstahmer says - free isn't free. We are paying for things one way or another. In advertisement, in lack of security, etc. Read the blog of the man (single man) who has been behind @TodaysMeet that's no way to exist either! #Novaedchathttps://t.co/OA7xZYaDCc

A2 trust chasllenges. trusting that they are smart enough, trusting that learning within the group will be accepted, trusting that they can show how smart they are. #NoVAedchat
Unfortunately, I think you’re right that many parents expect to see schools that are very much like the ones they attended as kids. It’s one of the big stumbling blocks to major changes in American education. #NoVaEdChat
I've been trying to get some Ts to use Flipgrid for Parent-Teacher Conferences. I think it would be great to have the Ss share a short video about how they are doing after meeting with the teacher. Now that would be feedback! #NoVAedchat
A4: In Fairfax County, we use Portrait of a Graduate skills-including creative and critical thinking. We do activities like SCAMPER, Plus/Minus/Interesting, analogies, etc. https://t.co/NgOvMACPYP#Novaedchat
A4: I include @Flipgrid videos within my units. Ss also demonstrate their learning through projects via @GoogleForEdu Classroom. Also having my partnership with @lyceebazin in France allows for even more collaboration and creativity in the class. #NoVAedChat
A2: always difficult to make sure every student has a role and contributes. Ideally, students are using their strengths to support each other. #NoVAEdChat
A4: A passion of mine that I am trying to communicate and get more Ts to use and use properly are PBL's and Inquiry Learning. They allow the Ss to be the drivers of the learning and truely get feedback. The Ss are truely engaged and in turn retain more information. #novaedchat
glad you're here! I was in georgetown/rock creek park last weekend on my way to the National Cathedral and saw all the crew boats. Thought of you the whole time! #NoVAedchat
@NoVAEdChat A4 When implementing the PoG attributes of Critical & Creative Thinking, Collaborator, and Communicator: embed in planning, make it visible, make it explicit, and assess it! #novaedchat
Yay for PoG! I took a class called strategies to engage and challenge advanced learners and we talked about the CCT strategies and the other PoG skills. #Novaedchat
Though you need to know how to plan i order to have this work. I've noticed more and more Ts coming to schools not knowing how to truly plan. #novaedchat
A4: I like google docs for this. Turning in a paper is final, but a doc is a process, open to collaboration, feedback, reflection, revision. #NoVAEdChat
A5 The PoG end of day cards are probably the easiest resource to use to encourage Ss to name and notice these soft skills in their peers and each other! #novaedchat
A5 We use our SBTS & librarian to help students with the technology and research aspects. I would love to see more PDs to learn about the best ways to teach students to collaborate and create projects #novaedchat
A5: We have excellent PD opportunities at our school thanks to @plgalietta and others where staff can receive training and then pass along to our students. #NoVAedchat
A5: A big resource I like is @responsiveclass I was using these strategies for years, but didn't realize it was responsive classroom. This Strategey allows the teacher and Ss to truly know each other and build a community in your room. #novaedchat
A6: I will be creating collaborative projects for my students to complete as a way of demonstrating their learning instead of traditional exams. #novaedchat
A6 by modeling what it means to be a collaborator and communicator and by talking about my challenges along the way! Practicing these skills are hard for us as adults, of course kids need support too! #novaedchat
