Hi everyone- I'm Jill. SLP in ECSE and Birth to 3 for many years Now a Sped Coordinator. #MNLead
  • ADutke Jan 7 @ 8:06 PM EST
A1. Yes! If a K-3rd classroom looks like a 4th or 5th grade classroom, or even a K classroom like a 1st grade classroom, it’s likely a packaged curriculum or imitative is at the forefront of the decision making, not students or their developmental needs. #MNLead
  • PrincipalHardin Jan 7 @ 8:06 PM EST
  • JessicaCabeen Jan 7 @ 8:06 PM EST
Thanks so much for jumping into the conversation tonight Matt! Excited to learn together #MNLead

Hey there. Nic Hahn from @PrairieViewEMS w/ @ISD728. I’m a k6 visual arts teacher. Glad to join #mnlead
  • JessicaCabeen Jan 7 @ 8:07 PM EST
A1. Yes-our littlest learners require authentic, developmentally appropriate learning experiences #MNLead #HackLearning
  • KatyMN12 Jan 7 @ 8:07 PM EST
A1 Of course it should, Early Childhood is a specific, magical life stage unlike any other. #MNLead. When we treat three year olds like smaller versions of their third grade selves, we miss something important. EC is special.
  • korytellers Jan 7 @ 8:07 PM EST
Also, look at what my kindergarten report card was like! This is from 1975-76. :) #MNLead
  • mahillmann - Moderator Jan 7 @ 8:07 PM EST
I am impressed you could find your Kindergarten report card so quickly! #mnlead
    • korytellers Jan 7 @ 8:07 PM EST
Also, look at what my kindergarten report card was like! This is from 1975-76. :) #MNLead
  • korytellers Jan 7 @ 8:07 PM EST
On my birthday I always asked the kids to guess how old I was. Guesses ranged from 5-1000 one year. :) #MNLead
    In reply to @DirectorJeanna
  • JessicaCabeen Jan 7 @ 8:08 PM EST
agreed Mindy-fun should always be our first memory of our early school days! #MNLead
    In reply to @MinSchroeder314
  • bretdom - Moderator Jan 7 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1 Why? First, the skills. There are so many routines and experiences our younger students. I like the K-5 community opportunities but do see how different the levels are. #mnlead
  • korytellers Jan 7 @ 8:08 PM EST
I've shared it on Facebook before. :) I used to have it hanging up on my Star of the Week board when I was the star back when I taught Kindergarten. :) #MNLead
    In reply to @mahillmann
  • PrincipalHardin Jan 7 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1: Not really! I think all of our classrooms need to encourage inquiry, movement, natural curiosity, project based learning, creativity, problem solving, etc. The products may look different but constant worksheets and sitting aren't appropriate at any level! #mnlead
  • mahillmann - Moderator Jan 7 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1 Yes, primary grades are going to look different. Student needs are different and we are building foundations for more complex learning. #mnlead
  • KatyMN12 Jan 7 @ 8:09 PM EST
    This. #mnlead
  • korytellers Jan 7 @ 8:09 PM EST
My mom actually goes to the same church as my kindergarten teacher. She is in her 80s now, but still very active! :) #MNLead
    In reply to @ADutke
  • MelissaSauser Jan 7 @ 8:10 PM EST
Hi, I’m Melissa. School board member. I was SO EXCITED to get pm K so I didn’t have to take naps anymore. #mnlead
  • JessicaCabeen Jan 7 @ 8:10 PM EST
great points Kendy-maybe all the grades should look more like the early years? #MNLead
    In reply to @PrincipalHardin
  • MinSchroeder314 Jan 7 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1) My initial was “duh, yes, different developmentally.” But when I thought, I realized “engagement is engagement, learning is learning, good instructors are good instructors.” Content & delivery may be different but the core remains the same. #mnlead
  • Neepernu Jan 7 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1: Hm. I am reading responses, and I guess I took this Q a little differently. I used to teach preschool, and then when I moved to eled, I kept a lot of the same teaching techniques/ideas-- student lead, phenomenon based questioning, process over product, etc #MNLead
  • jodialtringer Jan 7 @ 8:11 PM EST
True, I think any grade level would benefit from more of the things that we know work with early learners. #mnlead
    In reply to @PrincipalHardin
  • MiniMatisse Jan 7 @ 8:11 PM EST
In many ways no, we need to continue to teach like we do to our young learners in the older grades. Older kids need the learning through play that we provide so nicely for littles. #mnlead
    • ADutke Jan 7 @ 8:05 PM EST
      Q1: Should PreK-3 look different than 4th-12th? Why? #MNLead
  • ADutke Jan 7 @ 8:11 PM EST
It's a lot to learn, but once you start to dive into it, everything starts to make sense and the classroom experience becomes better for everyone (Tchrs, Ss, parents, etc) involved! :) #MNLead
    In reply to @DirectorJeanna
  • ADutke Jan 7 @ 8:11 PM EST
It's amazing how child development isn't part of many K-5 licensure programs... #mnlead
    In reply to @DirectorJeanna
  • korytellers Jan 7 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 Someone has probably already said this, but 4th-12th should look a whole lot more like preK-3rd in my opinion. #MNLead
  • JessicaCabeen Jan 7 @ 8:11 PM EST
Excellent points-PreK teachers have such a wealth of hands on learning ideas and inquiry based experiences we can all learn from #mnlead
    In reply to @Neepernu
  • MelissaSauser Jan 7 @ 8:12 PM EST
K reports is where I started my unnecessary talking streak. ;). #MNLEAD
    In reply to @korytellers
  • mahillmann - Moderator Jan 7 @ 8:12 PM EST
Good points here. Maybe the question is better phrased “should Grades 3-12 look different than K-2?” #mnlead
  • korytellers Jan 7 @ 8:13 PM EST
I was always told I was trying to help out my classmates too much. Even as a student I was always teaching. :) #MNlead
    In reply to @MelissaSauser
  • ADutke Jan 7 @ 8:13 PM EST
This is true! If all classes look like a Kindergarten classroom, nothing is wrong. It's the other way that is a problem... :) #MNLead
    In reply to @PrincipalHardin
  • mahillmann - Moderator Jan 7 @ 8:13 PM EST
I love the difference of thought on #mnlead’s Q1 tonight. Such great perspectives!
  • bretdom - Moderator Jan 7 @ 8:13 PM EST
That's a great point! I didn't think of it that way but it is so appropriate! Hands on, movement, experimenting, singing, sharing, grouping, creating...So many things that we need at any age. #mnlead
    In reply to @korytellers
  • OscarUribe90 Jan 7 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1. I am little late, but I believe there are several components in an Early education that should be adopted by elementary classrooms. #mnlead
  • ADutke Jan 7 @ 8:14 PM EST
Can I just say how excited I am to have a school board member joining #MNLead? Welcome & Thanks for joining us!
    In reply to @MelissaSauser
  • DirectorJeanna Jan 7 @ 8:14 PM EST
    Great rephrasing! #mnlead
    In reply to @mahillmann
  • JessicaCabeen Jan 7 @ 8:15 PM EST
Q2: How can we support and encourage educators and admin new to early learning? #MNLEAD
  • Neepernu Jan 7 @ 8:15 PM EST
I don't have any experience teaching over grade 8-- but I guess I wonder what distinguishes early learning best practices from secondary learning best practices. Other than scheduling bathroom breaks, of course. :) Does learning process change in 3-12? #MNLead
    In reply to @mahillmann
  • jillp0926 Jan 7 @ 8:15 PM EST
A1: I think we try too hard to make Prek-3 look like 4-12. Coming from an ECSE background, you can't expect young students with so many needs to absorb info just by sitting. They need to move and have interactive learning! #MNLead
  • cburke Jan 7 @ 8:15 PM EST
Yes. The play looks different for big kids and can involve more written/environmental instruction, but there’s a need for play and movement and choice all the way through life. #mnlead
    In reply to @korytellers
  • SlaterPBISMN Jan 7 @ 8:15 PM EST
A1 YES and NO. I think we all can learn a lot about learning from Pre- 2nd teachers and strategies. I think we should use the same strategies with Staff PD! Time to move away from sit and GET #mnlead
  • cyndy8412 Jan 7 @ 8:16 PM EST
.@bretdom I agree! I did all of those options with my juniors and they loved it! #mnlead
  • MelissaSauser Jan 7 @ 8:16 PM EST
Oh you’re so kind. I’ve dropped in and out of #mnlead many times. I just haven’t been as often lately.
    In reply to @ADutke
  • ADutke Jan 7 @ 8:16 PM EST
This is awesome! Do you think you would have had the same outcome if you went from teaching elementary first and moving down to preschool based on what you see in other classrooms? #mnlead
    In reply to @Neepernu
  • OscarUribe90 Jan 7 @ 8:16 PM EST
A1. Time for creative play and imagination are important for developing innovative thinkers. #mnlead
  • korytellers Jan 7 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2 Let them come and visit you in your classrooms. Until I actually taught K I had no idea what it was like. I had taught all grades 1st-6th before then, but teaching K was a whole new world. We should all know that world. #MNLead
  • MelissaSauser Jan 7 @ 8:16 PM EST
A1. My thoughts are a little extra love & time for play, yet I agree with @korytellers ALL grades need that. #lovethekids #MNLead
  • JessicaCabeen Jan 7 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2. Recognize the important role engaged, informed leaders can have in the early years. #MNLead
  • jillp0926 Jan 7 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2 Let them spend time with students! Encourage them to sit and stay awhile. Understand the unique needs of the students. #MNLead
    • JessicaCabeen Jan 7 @ 8:15 PM EST
Q2: How can we support and encourage educators and admin new to early learning? #MNLEAD
  • MinSchroeder314 Jan 7 @ 8:17 PM EST
And as we know, sometimes the bodies just get bigger, and the learning needs remain. #mnlead
    In reply to @jillp0926
  • ADutke Jan 7 @ 8:17 PM EST
YES! But how can we make this shift? It's happening with changes in K programs to be more like PreK (especially the K programs that were academic heavy), but this shift is slow... #MNLead
    In reply to @korytellers
  • JessicaCabeen Jan 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2. Encourage leaders to engage in relevant PD. #MNLead @MESPAprincipals https://t.co/ENZOXyoSHl
  • Neepernu Jan 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
Good question. I am not sure-- I think there is so much pressure from third grade up due to testing that it's harder to curate the kind of experiences that immerse young learners. #MNLead
    In reply to @ADutke
  • ADutke Jan 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2. Provide PD around childhood development. If you don’t understand or know about children’s progression of development, it’s easy to give into the push from top-down. When you understand development, can support & challenge Ss where they are at. #MNLead
  • jodialtringer Jan 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2: @NAEYC is a great resource for all things related to early learning, get familiar with position statements, recommended practices....#mnlead
  • KatyMN12 Jan 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
From preschool all the way through......life?! Play is such an important foundation for learning. #mnlead
    In reply to @OscarUribe90
  • mahillmann - Moderator Jan 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2 Start with the “why.” Early learning is essential in setting the stage for student long-term success. It’s also good for the economy. Latest estimates from @artrolnick44 show a $16:1 return on investment. #mnlead
  • ADutke Jan 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2. Provide time to observe schools and classrooms that value and understand children’s development, and where play is embraced as the way children learn and not something saved for days when there is time. #MNLead
  • korytellers Jan 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
That's why I LOVE what I get to teach SO much! It's like mental recess for ALL of the ages. :) #MNLead
    In reply to @MinSchroeder314, @jillp0926
  • jillp0926 Jan 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
And then, take a visit down the hallway to Early Childhood. That's even different from K! #MNLead
    In reply to @korytellers
  • cburke Jan 7 @ 8:19 PM EST
Can someone please repost q2? I can’t find it. #mnlead
  • JessicaCabeen Jan 7 @ 8:19 PM EST
agreed-just like learning-there are so many different ways to see things and learn from them. #MNLEad
    In reply to @mahillmann
  • DrPowersCMS Jan 7 @ 8:19 PM EST
  • bretdom - Moderator Jan 7 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2. Start with training. I am just learning more about Pre-K this year. My principal training prepared me "generally" for K-12 leadership. PreK-3 is a skill set in it's own right. #mnlead
  • SlaterPBISMN Jan 7 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2 We have to get our teachers and staff to use a #pineapplechart. We can learn sooo much from each other but we need to get into the classroom to see it, hear it and feel the classroom. #mnlead
  • DirectorJeanna Jan 7 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2. I have been working to get as many district leaders into the classrooms of my talented teachers. Come and see what this looks like and we can talk about the WHY. #mnlead
  • korytellers Jan 7 @ 8:20 PM EST
PROTIP When needing the question, enter '#MNLead Q2" in your search box and it will pop right up. :)

Can someone please repost q2? I can’t find it. #mnlead
  • ADutke Jan 7 @ 8:20 PM EST
I think this is true! I am seeing a lot of programs slowing down and re-examining their PreK & K programs due to increasing Ss behaviors. They let the pressure from top down take away from meeting the Ss developmental needs. Have to reset & look at supporting Ss today #MNLead
    In reply to @jillp0926
  • MelissaSauser Jan 7 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2: Invite them in. I do everything I can to make it to classroom events when invited. #MNLead
  • OscarUribe90 Jan 7 @ 8:20 PM EST
    I can't see Q2 either #mnlead
    In reply to @cburke
  • jillp0926 Jan 7 @ 8:20 PM EST
Yes! One of the best classes I had as an undergrad was a whole semester on "normal" child development (as part of my undergrad in Comm Disorders). Also, having my own kids has helped my understanding of child development. #mnlead
    In reply to @ADutke
  • DirectorJeanna Jan 7 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2. I also think that sharing what Parent Educators do helps to broaden the dialogue beyond preschool only. #mnlead
  • MiniMatisse Jan 7 @ 8:21 PM EST
Celebrating their successes and learning experiences! Smile with them as they encounter all the joy and challenges of P-2. #mnlead
    • JessicaCabeen Jan 7 @ 8:15 PM EST
Q2: How can we support and encourage educators and admin new to early learning? #MNLEAD
  • KatyMN12 Jan 7 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2 open the door, invite them in, help them make the connections between what they see and the learning that is happening there. Help them understand that EC is a messy, chaotic, warm, and joyful (aka loud) space. #mnlead
  • jodialtringer Jan 7 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2: Listen to EC professionals, ask them what they need to support their students, get their feedback #mnlead
  • ADutke Jan 7 @ 8:21 PM EST
I agree - we need our PD to look like what we want Tchrs classrooms to be like! #MNLead

Q2: How can we support and encourage educators and admin new to early learning? #MNLEAD
  • PrincipalHardin Jan 7 @ 8:22 PM EST
A2: We schedule learning walks during #PLC time. Teachers are learning from and supporting each other in varying grade levels. On our last walk I was so excited for my 5th grade team who said they learned some strategies in a Kinder class they can use! #mnlead
  • Neepernu Jan 7 @ 8:22 PM EST
A2: Nerd alert-- But I think that Early Learning teachers and admin need to have a solid understanding of ed psych, ACES/SEL, and inquiry based learning. This will help you define, develop, promote, and defend your program. #MNLead
  • korytellers Jan 7 @ 8:22 PM EST
Your PLC time is during the school day? #MNLead
    In reply to @PrincipalHardin
  • jodialtringer Jan 7 @ 8:23 PM EST
I also have to put a plug in for @decsped on the special education side. There are some wonderful resources available through that organization. #mnlead
    In reply to @JessicaCabeen, @NAEYC, @decsped
  • cburke Jan 7 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2 I kinda think there is a lot of unlearning that many educators need to do, if they are trying to embrace principles of good early education. #mnlead
    In reply to @JessicaCabeen
  • jillp0926 Jan 7 @ 8:23 PM EST
I so agree. I often wonder how many behaviors would be reduced/eliminated if there were fewer academic demands in Pre-K and Kindergarten. #mnlead
    In reply to @ADutke
  • mahillmann - Moderator Jan 7 @ 8:23 PM EST
Absolutely. Parent educators play a crucial role in our efforts to support students along the cradle-to-career continuum! #mnlead
    • DirectorJeanna Jan 7 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2. I also think that sharing what Parent Educators do helps to broaden the dialogue beyond preschool only. #mnlead
  • ADutke Jan 7 @ 8:23 PM EST
Until being in an elementary school, the K teachers didn't realize what PreK was like. Now they get it from seeing Ss every day (and I get what K is like now). But what always baffles me is why it's OK for PreK & K to be different, but not 1st? #mnlead
    In reply to @korytellers
  • KatyMN12 Jan 7 @ 8:23 PM EST
Yes! And bridge home and school connections. #mnlead
    In reply to @DirectorJeanna
  • korytellers Jan 7 @ 8:24 PM EST
Don't want to bring it up, because it will open up a whole can of worms, but you know that a lot of this is because of all the standards that must be covered. Not only in K, but in all the grades. #MNLead
    In reply to @jillp0926, @ADutke
  • MelissaSauser Jan 7 @ 8:24 PM EST
Also, when you invite them, give them something to do too. #mnlead

  • cburke Jan 7 @ 8:24 PM EST
I’m not well suited to FT kdg, but it has been a relief at times to work with the littles as a specialist bc it’s much more acceptable to acknowledge that a child may not be There Yet. #mnlead So much of a push w older grades.
    In reply to @JessicaCabeen
  • OscarUribe90 Jan 7 @ 8:24 PM EST
A2. Schools need to build systems where all educators have opportunities to observe each other in action. #MNLEAD
  • KatyMN12 Jan 7 @ 8:25 PM EST
  • DirectorJeanna Jan 7 @ 8:25 PM EST
I agree - for me this is critical. I share with my k-5 colleagues what we work on and how the MN ECIPs are so much more comprehensive that K-5 standards. #mnlead

A5: We are in our first year of district wide #PBL. We have had so many opportunities for Ts & Ss at all levels to interact w/each other. Our 4th grade ALPS #PBL project was based on helping PK Ss. We also have district wide PLCs at least one day each 6 weeks or so. #mnlead

I'm going to admit that this makes me a little nervous. I worry that those curriculums are making daycare and pre-schools focus more on the academics versus the SEL and play we've talked so much about tonight. That we are making daycare/preschool the new K. #MNLead

It is a basic set of resources. The response from home-based day cares was incredible. I think the other important concept tonight is using “and” rather than “or.” #mnlead

This is fantastic! I'd love to see more collaboration btwn home daycares, community preschools, & school district preschools in our communities. It's 1 thing I love about the MN outdoor learning network is it brings together everyone - but statewide, need on smaller scale #MNLead

This is true! It's a mindset that I think many families are creating, but isn't necessarily coming from the school districts themselves - more so a misinterpretation of the "Ready for K" campaign. I think schools need a new slogan... #MNLead
