Hello and welcome to #whatisschool! My name is Laura Hill and I'll be co-hosting tonight with my good friend Mark Weston @ShiftParadigm. I'm so excited to see you all tonight.
My name is Laura Hill. I'm an author, illustrator and student advocate from NYC. I'm also the co-founder of #whatisschool.
I have a new art show 12/1, and am currently working with students on the autism spectrum.
Please, introduce yourself.
Hi Everyone, Priya from Singapore, Will be in and out, probably lurking more today while getting ready for school.Interested in learning more about interactive classrooms #whatisschool
Hi, Maddie! So glad you could make it. This is a wonderful network of educators:). We're also neighbors, too. I'm in Charlotte. #whatisschool Hats off to your professors for encouraging you to tweet.
A1: We start each morning in the gym today with affirmations!
I am...Peace
I am...Love
I am...The Future
Then we do a mindfulness activity each day. "I promise to love myself today" #whatisschool
A favorite topic #whatisschool Community, relationships between students, faculty, staff and parents. I’m subbing in kinder today and can’t make it. Good thing I can check tweets later.

A1: For us, camps are the way. We get to know each other, Ts and Ss in a way that’s not possible in the school day. Particularly challenging camps. Where Ts struggle too. #whatisschool
A1) I have a crew of 3rd graders who love to help me with math. Students from grades 2 through 5 help me with Genius/Maker Hour. My first graders are supported by their peers in and out of classroom daily. #whatisschool@ShiftParadigm@candylandcaper
A1: FTF games and icebreakers are imp but Ss can successfully build relationships online as well. Integrate technology into your practice. #whatisschool
A1: asking the students and teachers rose (good thing), bud (looking forward), and thorn (bad thing) of either the day or the week. Everyone is able to be closer to each other :)
#whatisschool
Engage ... there is no secret code ... relationship ... create learning opportunities they value. Be passionate about what you do and they will buy in. #whatisschool

A2: Although it does not have to do with math necessarily, I plan to use a hop scotch runner rug an enter ticket to loosen the students up and make sure they start class off having fun and remembering that they are still kids
#whatisschool
Another cool thing that's been happening is some of my kiddos from past years who are in after school have been helping me with classroom organization. It's awesome to see how much they've grown and matured:) #whatisschool@ShiftParadigm@candylandcaper

Q2: What types of interactive strategies (enter/exit tickets, pair/share, debate, role play) have you used, how did they work out? #whatisschool@ShiftParadigm

It's all about getting to know your students, their passions, & building trust to help them discover their full potential. We have nothing without relationships #whatisschool#tlap#leadlap
A1: I have opened my room up during our nutrition break. I do not do it everyday, but it has allowed students to interact in a setting that is not academic. #whatisschool

I like to do debates, but debates only work if every kid is prepared and participates ... did a digital debate through Google Classroom ... no threaded comments ... I loathe the classroom, but that is another story #whatisschool
A2) Retelling stories of the week has been successful. Today we turned our story graphic organizer into an art project. It was hard for some to visualize initially. Made me see the importance of doing this more to help their understanding expand. #whatisschool
Q2 Ss life be all of those, Mark, as they enjoy interacting and the social aspects of learning. I also use written conversations and dramas. #whatisschool
Reply: Good ?s All my online classes are "grouped" for discussions. We engage in weekly forums plus reviews. So, Ss interact in pairs weekly #whatisschool

A3: In high school (and even now), we used Kahoot and all of the students got so into it and were engaged during the quizzes. The children are able to have friendly competition while learning, so I would definitely use it in a classroom!
#whatisschool
A2) I like to use role play! I have numerous situation we work out as a group! It is almost all student centered. It has much better results than a lecture! #whatisschool
A2: In the classroom, we work in pairs or groups. Some recipes, each part of the kitchen has a different role and if I don’t play my part, I don’t get to eat. #whatisschool
A3) Have used Nearpod. Here VR is the most popular one. I have been learning and trying to create some VR content with my 360 photos that I would love to share in Classroom with Ss when I get an opputunity #WhatIsSchool
I saw this in action when my students created their Thanksgiving villages. They solved conflicts, listened to each other, compromised. #whatisschool@ShiftParadigm@candylandcaper

We're starting our animal research. I'm looking forward to them sharing what they learned with each other. #whatisschool I had several kids volunteer to help struggling classmates today. So grateful for @PaulSolarz book planting the seed for me. @ShiftParadigm@candylandcaper

“Homework is practice, and if you go to most scrimmages or practices, we don’t practice with the scoreboard on,” - Michael Anderson - Aministrator at Jordan Public Schools. #JoyfulLeaders
A4: @Plickers would be a great tool to integrate tech and traditional strategies and could be used as a formative assessment for Ts to immediately get data on Ss #whatisschool
A4: I think (if a budget miraculously allowed it) a drone would be incredible to use as a resource for geometry lessons. The drone is able to capture multiple different views and distances and we can use the pictures to measure angles and map it to scale
#whatisschool
Q4: How can traditional strategies and technology be blended to enhance lessons and provide critical feedback to educators?

I said to a colleague recently STEM isn't really a new thing. It's a new name for allowing kids to be the natural explorers and engineers they were created to be. #whatisschool@ShiftParadigm It's simple if you really think about. Give them tools to soar.
A1 So many things! School-wide activities across the grades. Since we cover Shakespeare at the same time across grades, we had a Renaissance fair with period games and costumes. Everyone participated from students to administration. #whatisschool
any strategy that works should be used ... pen to paper is just as good as tapping keys ... we're talking about thinking and that can happen doing anything #whatisschool

Q5: What tools, training or environmental enhancements would be most helpful to educators creating an interactive classroom?
#whatisschool@ShiftParadigm
A5: as both of my minors relate to outdoor education, I am hoping to teach my future students outside at least twice a month and solely use resources from nature. It would be a cool way to still teach while reminding students they are fortunate to have pencils
#whatisschool

A5 Jumping in late into the #whatisschool game... Facilities need to have interconnectivity, a decent wifi speed (if possible), and tables where Ts can interact with each other.
A5.At the risk of being labeled old fashioned can I say the best tool of all is ue the https://t.co/WvvepLVlVd used correctly greatly enhances teaching and learning. It will never replace the teacher #whatisschool
A5: Training is key! We need to stay ahead of the game to give our Ss the most up to date forms of technology that will become increasingly more prevalent in their lives #whatisschool
A5 For tech interactive SM and SM literacy training vital. Ask @julnilsmith For natural interactive get outside & connect w local flora, fauna, landscape #whatisschool
Thanks #whatisschool@candylandcaper@ShiftParadigm for encouraging me to keep growing after a long day. Great job tonight! Thanks for being a positive light in my life daily:)
Q6: How can interactivity foster skills that will help students succeed in school and post school life; and cope with a sometimes isolating technological world. #whatisschool@ShiftParadigm
A6: In my experience as a student, when lessons are interactive I tend to remember them more. Skills are fostered better this way and students have a better chance to retain the knowledge even after the test, rather than just memorizing information for the exam
#whatisschool

Q6 How can interactivity foster skills that will help students succeed in school nd post-school life, and cope with a sometimes isolating technological world? #whatisschool
A6 Tech hardware may isolate, but SM brings connections, society, and we hope sociability. Basic #digitalcitizenship fundamental in the tech world #whatisschool
Sorry to have missed this evening’s discussion! Loving all of the responses to some really thought-provoking questions! @ShiftParadigm & @candylandcaper never fail to challenge (and support) educator thinking! #whatisschool
Q6 How can interactivity foster skills that will help students succeed in school nd post-school life, and cope with a sometimes isolating technological world? #whatisschool
A6: Interactivity and hands on learning can keep Ss engaged with not only the technology they are using but also the people that are around them. Ss can learn how to collaborate with others, a useful future skill #whatisschool
Please joining in thanking my co-host, Mark Weston. You are brilliant! Mark is a huge promoter of eduction, please visit him on twitter and connect @ShiftParadigm#whatisschool
I think it may be a lack of distraction ... no temptation to flip onto another screen or try to find someone else's thoughts ... it is all them. #whatisschool
