Heyyyyyy guys! It’s Miss B! Back at it here tonight from Northeast Elementary! I teach 5th graders, & all content areas! I’m all about bringing the creativity, the fun, & the party to the classroom, so this is usually my go to GIF:
#ksedchat 🙌🏻🎉
A1: Katherine in tonight after spending the day with my third graders at Christ the King in Wichita, KS! Three recess on Monday and all indoor today has got this GIF perfect. #ksedchat
A1: I spend the 1st 6 wks building a classroom community, routines, procedures, and expectations. Head Start has provided the curriculum, called Sunshine Circle. We also use the tools in Conscious Discipline. #ksedchat
A1 our room uses the zones of regulation, along with 2nd step. We also include class meetings/weekend debriefs every morning. With resiliency being on the forefront, we strive to create a safe learning environment for all Ss. #KSEDchat
A1 Our school uses Zones of Regulation, so we have Ss check-in several times per day, Ss also participate in mindfulness activities, and our district has provided us with Second Step #ksedchat
A2: We talk a great deal about what we could have done differently in a situation, and getting them to explain why they feel the way we do. I hold them accountable for their actions and we are working on taking care of ourselves. #ksedchat
A1: Project based learning and group work collaboration are a few ways that social interactions and building relationships appear naturally in a classroom setting. By having Ss work together for a common academic goal, they can also build social skills. #ksedchat
A1) We have a wonderful social/emotional curriculum that we teach from each week. More importantly, I work hard to keep these core competencies in the forefront of all of my lessons - I’ve found I’m at my best when I can be flexible and responsive to my student’s needs. #ksedchat
A1: every day we start off with a class meeting to go over Second Step and kind social responses. I also talk to Ss 1-1 when issues need to be redirected. We also have impromptu class discussions when needed. (Fire Drill, Schedule Change, Dead Cricket...) #ksedchat
A1: As a 5th T I deal with HEAVY S.E. learning in regards to ownership of decisions & conflict resolution. I use “discipline” moments to enforce this. Instead of TELLING students the “correct response”, I ask them to tell ME their role/solution to the problem at hand. #ksedchat
A1: We talk daily about being responsible, and give opportunities for students to practice. Self-management can be very difficult for my students #ksedchat
A1: The core competencies of SEL are built into all facets of @go2Science: motion breaks in livestream sessions; team building during stem challenges; global social awareness in our field mission; on & on! These are critical in early childhood for a strong foundation! #ksedchat
A1: Our building uses the 8 keys of excellence to teach these skills. We use our morning meeting time and weekly goal setting to improve on these skills. #ksedchat
A1: Along those same lines, allowing students wait time & struggle to find a solution for their conflicts THEMSELVES gives Ss ownership & accountability that they wouldn’t find from being “told” from an authority figure. My kiddos know now, “Idk...” is not a solution! #ksedchat
A1: Let student SEL competencies in need of growth determine the "what" you teach, and their strengths determine the "how" you teach a lesson. Ex. Teaching self awareness (area for growth) through group activities (area of strength). #ksedchat
A1: continued... our school has each classroom switch kids and we teach about the brain every Wednesday. We also incorporate the Zones of Regulation in the school #ksedchat
A1: SEL is very important in our building. We self monitor with zones of regulation and talk about the other aspects of SEL during communities daily with a mix of Pre-K-7 students. #ksedchat
A1. Our all school daily announcements include our we-are-family-word-of-the-week that has to do with self-awareness and self-management. We build off of this in our morning meeting time. Time spent teaching social awareness and management are well spent in First grade! #ksedchat
A2: I feel like responsible decision making is a bit of a culminating skill. By focusing on that one, we are able to address the others as needed. #ksedchat
A2: In my experience, Self Awareness and Self Management have to be in place before any other learning can consistently occur. If kids aren't able to regulate themselves, then all the other SEL and academic skills end up waiting anyway. #ksedchat
A2: Relationship Management. Relationships, getting along with others, is one of the most important skills to develop because the sooner they learn to get along with others, the better capable they are at Positive Conflict Resolution. #ksedchat
A2. I would like to focus more on responsible decision making. We've been working all year on self awareness and self management, and I would like to see students begin to use their awareness to make socially responsible decisions. #ksedchat
A2 I feel that each plays a vital role in helping to craft a student into the person they desire to be. The one that I see most Ss struggle with, social awareness. Modeling this as Ts, can most certainly help Ss learn this core competency #KSEDchat
A1: I think each year this focus may be different! Self management would be what my current class needs. I love doing PBL and allowing Ss freedom but they have to have self management skills for this to effective! #ksedchat
A2: I would say “Relationship Management” is the key aspect I hope to emphasize most with Ss. Its a life skill that will effect SO much of their future; their careers, their credibility & their personal relationships. Those that thrive confront conflict & are teachable! #ksedchat
A2) I have been working hard this year on helping my Ss to be more self-aware by focusing on growth mindset in an effort to build up their resilience. I want them to be confident and know that they can bounce back and keep moving forward when life gets tough. #ksedchat
A1: Procedures and expectations at the beginning of the year and consistency throughout! (Practice being proactive and not reactive to behavior!!) It’s tough, but I’m working on getting better! #ksedchat
Exactly! The more you get to know your students the better you are able to cater to what they need during that particular time. I feel like it could even change from month to month. #ksedchat
A2: Ahhh, how do you choose just one! 😬🤔 I’m going to go with self awareness, because I’m really trying to get students to focus on their own Zone of Regulation each day so they can learn how to manage their feelings in a healthy way. #ksedchat
A2 I want to focus on self awareness. If we are not aware of ourselves, then do not understand what we need to do to improve ourselves. We also do not know that there may be a better way to handle a situation. #ksedchat
A2) Good decision making. My grades are a reflection of student proficiency only. Kids are sonjswd to collecting points, and limited effort has historically worked well enough. It doesn’t cut it in my class, and some are finding out the hard way. Again.... #ksedchat
A3 w/out SEL being taught in schools, Ss lose the perfect opportunity to practice skills they’re being taught both at home & school. It also enhances S ability to grow as a person alongside growing as a learner. #KSEDchat
A3: With the ever-increasing use of screen time, even for the littles, people spend less time actually communicating. We need to teach our Ss to self-regulate and get along with others. Most are not learning these essential skills at home. #ksedchat
A3) Academic learning really can’t happen well or at all if the social/emotional side isn’t in place first. There absence is a barrier to learning, their presence is a catalyst. #ksedchat
A3: Teaching SEL in schools brings us together as a community. It builds a culture with common language so all kids can be successful with clear and consistent expectations! #ksedchat
A3: SEL is important to Ss, in a classroom, and in a school so that Ss feel safe in their school. Ss that have strong healthy relationships with their classmates can be more successful in school by building each other up. If we help Ss learn how to identify and work #ksedchat
A3 Cont.: through their feelings, emotions, and situations they can do the same in life and work with others that they don't necessarily agree with in life. #ksedchat
A3: Big picture? We need to prep Ss for life in the Fourth Industrial Revolution and a world of AI. We need responsible, compassionate citizens to navigate our future world and use technology for good! https://t.co/u8thw7s6Xt#ksedchat
A3) SEL is absolutely essential in today’s learning environment. Speaking as a parent, I know what happens to my own child when their SEL needs aren’t being met in the classroom - as a teacher, I bring that same awareness into my classroom to help all students thrive! #ksedchat
A3: SEL is a great equalizer in closing achievement gaps. Study after study has shown the long term impacts of strong emotional intelligence and social skills - so excited that KS is embracing this research and encouraging #SEL in all schools across the state. #ksedchat
A3: SEL is important in our schools because for SOME, its breaking a generational pattern theyre being raised in & exposed to every day at home. It equips them to find resilience & grit to hold down that job, pursue that degree, & have healthy relationships/credibility. #ksedchat
A3: As teachers, we are not only responsible to cater to the academic needs of our Ss, but their emotional needs, too, providing opportunities to teach the “whole student”. #ksedchat
A3: For the people in the back 📢If we don’t teach and model for kids to manage emotions in a healthy way everything else we teach becomes irrelevant. #ksedchat#soapbox
A3: Just today my students lead the conversation on MAKING something of themselves when the CIRCUMSTANCES were stacked against them.
“How do I show I’m teachable? How do I model growth mindset? How do I become a 1st Gen Grad?”
They are OWNING it, because I MODEL it!
#ksedchat
I think reaching students beyond your content is an essential part of fostering positive relationships with them!
So, how do you reach your students?!
Question #4:
#ksedchat
A4: Integration is sooo important. Every @Go2Science lesson has the opportunity to integrate science, ELA, math, service learning, and the arts! #ksedchat
A2: relationships among students and collaboration. Many Ss want it their way, no help, and want to be right all the time. I see Ss really struggle to work together and share ideas. Give and take! #ksedchat
A4 we love celebrating successes! Last week, we stopped reading & took time to build up one of our peers when he got a question wrong. It was amazing to see how the class came together to build this Ss up. This would not have happened if I didn’t model the behavior #KSEDchat
A3: I have read several articles that parents & children alike are addicted to tech as I Tweet) Kids are not properly guided in reactions “like the good old days.” Plus, there is so much more in our society now, we have to prepare our Ss with SEL, not just academics #ksedchat
A4: Student choice is so important! I love allowing students a chance to bring their own interests into a lesson to promote “buy in” to the curricular content, but to also allow me to get to know more about my kiddos! #ksedchat
A4: Our school’s Wild Club gets kids excited about being outside with fishing, hiking, etc! We also have a great after school program that has tons of great clubs for our elementary kiddos! I also tried to learn fortnite dances, but turns out I’m old. 😂🤣#ksedchat
A4) Part of the SEL process is connecting with Ss on a personal level and learning about their interests. I have the added bonus of living in the same community as my students - I’ve found out that these connections make our classroom family bond & connections stronger #ksedchat
A4: I ALWAYS turn to student’s interests when looking for examples to use in class! Mason loves the Chiefs? We’re talking about resilience in reading? BOOM!
“Mason, how do you think the Chiefs reaction to their recent loss can help them succeed or fail in the future?”
#ksedchat
A4: we chase a lot of squirrels in class 😆 I try to answer their Curiosity, as long as it stays on topic… Or somewhat close to the topic. This hooks and engages everyone along with keeping learning exciting. #KSEDchat
A4: PBL lends itself nicely to allow space for Ss to not only master content but explore through a lens that makes sense to them. Ss put their own passion into project. Still building confidence in my Ss that all outcomes should not and do not have to look the same! #ksedchat
A3. Teaching SEL is essential to the success of all students because it empowers them to manage their own environment and learn how to regulate emotions. It is dangerous to assume that Ss will learn these skills without them being explicitly taught. #ksedchat
A4) I just ask them about themselves. I’ve been recommended books, songs, art, etc. because I asked about their interest or what they’re up to. And then I read, listen, watch, visit, etc. their recommendations when I can and chat about it with them. #ksedchat
A3: Life is all about relationships. SEL is the foundation for our Ss to have healthy lives, make good decisions, and to become@impactful leaders of our future! #ksedchat
A5: I stay positive by remembering WHY I do what I do! I truly believe I'm helping make the world a better place one curious mind at a time every day. That makes me feel pretty awesome and all that enthusiasm just leaks out! #ksedchat
A5) I’m definitely a believer in the power of failure and the growth it can precipitate. My assessment system reflects this, and I think it encourages to keep pushing. There are no finish lines in my class. I just want to see how far each kid can get. #ksedchat
A5: I love building relationships with all the Ss in the school, as a small school it is a quicker process, but that doesn't mean we stop. I try to make learning fun for all my kids; when they forget they are learning that is the best. #ksedchat
A4: connection with a student beyond class can be very powerful. I eat lunch with 2 Ss every Friday, have morning check ins, attend youth events or Coach, and sometimes it’s picking up a S for their bday and taking them out for a slushee just because! ❤️ #KSEDchat
A5: Doorway greeting & exiting with hugs & high fives. Collaborative work. PBL. Journaling. Think Alouds. Growth Mindset. Growth Mindset Spotify playlist by @CJLuckeyDope in the mornings & during independent hw time! The list is never ending!
#ksedchat
A5) We foster positivity in our classroom through growth mindset practices, celebrating the everyday wins and filling buckets. In our school, my class incorporates at least one random act of kindness in the building each quarter - my Ss love doing this! #ksedchat
A5: My goal is to inspire goodness in my students’ hearts. Greatness in academics is fine, but good hearts, that’s the ultimate goal each day. 🥰🥰 #ksedchat
A5 same as A4 😬, we love celebrating ALL successes. With that we have class goals that are posted where we can all see them. The goals were voted on, and then I made sure they were attainable. We’re just about to our reading goal for the year, and not too far from math #KSEDchat
A5: I try not to take things too seriously. We joke around a lot. Today they laughed as I attempted a girl voice for a character in the read-aloud. They informed me that I cannot pull it off. #ksedchat
Wow! @WeirickSarah and the rest of the #ksedchat crew brought it tonight!
Come back next week! I guarantee @MissBush12 will have an awesome chat for everyone!
Have a great week everybody!
A5: Put on a positive mood. Our kids deserve it! When you see/hear something that a staff member is doing, tell them!! Share your chocolate stash. Write them notes! #ksedchat
