Basic curriculum knowledge is no longer enough to prepare our future leaders for the global market. Therefore, the emphasis on the part of schools, districts, and states must focus on aligning curriculum with career-readiness standards.

A1: College and career readiness refer to the acquisition of the knowledge to be accepted into a college along with the skills to pursue a career of choice upon completion. #mdeschat
A1. Having the necessary social, technical/technological and academic skills to be successful in a post-secondary setting or career prep program. #mdeschat
A2: Schools must have a coherent instructional program with multiple entry points that require Ss to acquire and apply academic, technical, and non-cognitive skills (perseverance) over time. #mdeschat
A2. Ss need to develop communication skills, critical thinking, innovation, literacy, self-direction, life skills (perseverance, collaboration, respect, dedication) #mdeschat
A2: In addition to a coherent academic program, effective counseling and mentorship can increase success, especially for our students who need the most support. #mdeschat
Absolutely! Thank you for bringing attention to the support roles, which increase the success rate of obtaining college and career readiness! #mdeschat
Argument writing and speaking is critical to be able to sell. Everyone needs to be able to market themselves to be ready for a career. #mdeschat Read To Sell is Human by @DanielPink
A3. Career readiness skills look a lot like college readiness skills except that (maybe) students are more interested in a specific area that doesnât require a 4yr degree #mdeschat
We are getting into the politics of teaching and learning. College may not be the final destination, but college and career readiness should remain the path. #mdeschat
A3. Career readiness is a path towards a trade, skill or ability that may provide services other than that requiring a college education. Exposure, internship, & guest speakers could support #mdeschat
Both require preparation, growth, and commitment. Successful schools equip and empower Ss for success at any level. Aim higher, achieve more. #mdeschat
A4 I think that this depends on where they are looking. Typing, resume writing, reflection, goal setting, and well I'm not sure the last two are "technical skills" but these things also help with college readiness. #mdeschat
A4. Pretty much the same foundational skills that students need for college: strong literacy & numeracy skills, the ability to collaborate, self-direction/motivation #mdeschat
Social/emotional growth is vital to success at any level. Have to be able to function in any setting. Equally as important as having the academic skills. #mdeschat

Self-direction/motivation is easy when students want to learn and explore everything. How do we handle students that aren't motivated to complete gen ed required courses in college? Do they still require those? It's been 12 years since I finished undergrad. #mdeschat
A4: Timely question given today is #DLDay. Jobs requiring baseline digital skills (e.g. word-processing, spreadsheets) pay 17% higher wages than non-digital middle-skill jobs #mdeschat
A4: The ability to use the internet to find and learn new skills/information is something I find valuable. Also, determining reliable vs unreliable vs somewhere in the middle in terms of information sources. #learninghowtogoogle#mdeschat
You hit the nail on the head with motivation. Self-directedness is a learned behavior. Student-centered instruction is a valid approach to restructuring the learning environment to encourage student motivation. #mdeschat
I was just reading some today that the average person types about 40 words per minute. Maybe we should start ensuring our students are graduating with the ability to type well. #mdeschat
I have learned through my secondary experience, there is a college for every learner and resources to help find the match. We have an incredible college counseling team. #mdeschat
Independent learning time, freedom to choose and make poor choices to learn from. Teaching of skills needed to get help on work, or make connections to the outside world. #mdeschat
Typing is a technical skill, but I wonder how schools can build typing into an already tight curriculum. Is this a place for one to one? SAMR model where the focus is not on typing, but on enhancing/transforming learning. #mdeschat
I don't teach it, but we use it daily in class. There are plenty of websites that can help you learn keyboarding. I took a class in high school that is probably the only class that I still use daily. #mdeschat
The challenge is convincing students that it is NOT about the name on the diploma, but the individual learning trajectory and preparation for college. #mdeschat
A5: Problems requiring collaboration and thinking over time. Less emphasis on mastering content and more focus on applying skills outside of the classroom. #mdeschat
One can celebrate the accomplishment of achieving the diploma acquisition, but it is important to understand that the diploma is just another step forward and not the final destination. #mdeschat

I have been thinking about internships and asking the question "Would a four year apprenticeship under several veteran teachers have prepared me for teaching just as much as four years of undergraduate work?" #mdeschat
Yes, these are all great. If we can collaborate with internships so that technical skills for career success are aligned with daily instruction, we might increase student motivation. #mdeschat

Final Question How should schools frame teaching and learning in order to ensure academic and technical skills as well as employability at all levels? #mdeschat
Schools should provide experiences to a variety of career paths and opportunities for students when they are done with school. Then connect the instruction to these experiences and allow students to find options that match them #mdeschat
Focus less on content mastery and more on skill development to support content knowledge and technical skills in ways that encourage students to create products, present findings, and work across multiple days on real-life problems. #mdeschat
