#bfc530 Engage English learners through sports, intramural programs, internships, and Greek organizations for support, involvement, and student success.
We have an ELL instructor that helps in classrooms at times. Teaching in rural Indiana, we have few, if any, students that are not living in English speaking homes. #bfc530
Multicultural Dinner with foods, entertainment, and socializing is a great celebration of diversity. Lots of classes are co-taught: content T and ESL T. We are up to 3 ESL Ts in the high school. Growing program. #bfc530
Make sure their lockers are integrated with everyone else's. (They used to be by homeroom so all our ELD Ss had their lockers together at one end of the hall)

We make sure that translations or translators are available for parents. It's important to pair up Ss with S ambassadors so that they'll feel welcome. #bfc530

We do our best to learn phrases in their language (hello, goodbye) we also have an ELL teacher that works with ELL Ss. The important part is to keep in mind that just bc they can’t speak/ understand English (YET!) does NOT mean they aren’t capable. #BFC530
As the ELL teacher I connect my Ss with other classes especially the language classes. We do collaborative projects to help the students make friends. #bfc530

Thanks. Good reminder of how different schools can be around our country. In Fairfax we have 35,000 English learners out of 190,000 students. Some schools, over half their students. #bfc530
We emerge our ELLs in all school events and celebrate with multicultural dinners and presentations, newcomers are welcome in every class to make them feel a part of things from the start! #bfc530

Some of the takes are just delusional and are fueled by things that have absolutely nothing to do with this dust up or initial tweet. I hope that professional educators are not teaching students some of these delusions in the classroom, but I know that some are. #bfc530
Seems like a small thing, but where students lockers are can be a big deal. Sadly there are schools that have put all their EL teachers in portable classrooms (outside trailers) so some English learners go through the whole day without entering the school building. #bfc530
This is one area where we need to do better, especially with helping our “mainstream” kids having empathy. Too often a lot of my babies see a difference as a weakness & there can be bullying as a result. #bfc530
Yes, but I bet you have opportunities to learn a wider spectrum of things from the students at your school than what I do. Don't get me wrong, I still learn a lot, but spectrum is smaller. #bfc530
Pt. 2: I think that if we can build empathy in our kids, they will come to see that each kid brings something unique to the table. They might just come to see that our differences combined can make us stronger as a learning community. #bfc530
Yes! And something I have been working on with my babies is to show them that being kind, even when you are scared, mad, or feeling powerless, is a strength. Still a work in progress, but it is a goal of mine. #bfc530
Us too! So much of our school (over half) is or has recently been in the ELL program, so there is a lot of community already for any new student who comes in. #bfc530
There are so many languages spoken at our school, it’s pretty much a given that we have translators at every event. We also have bilingual counselors in several languages on site to help our Ss and parents on daily basis. #bfc530
Yesterday, I had several students that are new to this country give a presentation for my STEM CTE elective about their future career in their native language with either a peer translator or written English translation on the projector. #bfc530
Our ROE has tutoring in their native language and then they come to school the other half of the day. I tried my hardest to ask about culture, their home, learn “thank you” in their language and other common things, mark their old home on my map hanging up in the room #bfc530
