#games4ed Archive
#games4ed discussions cover ways in which gaming can be used in education. Games mirror the way the human mind was designed to learn. They motivate players to take risks and actions, persevere through failures, set and achieve increasingly difficult goals, and devote attention, time, and effort to acquiring knowledge and skills. All this while the game is tracking the player’s actions and assessing the player’s achievements and skills. Isn’t this what we want from education?

Q1: What experience have you had in setting up/hosting game jams? what tips can you give?
A1: My life is a game jam :)
Love that movie. Rickman is wonderful and plays opposite one of my all time favorites: the incomparable Emma Thompson.
Shelly from Toronto; Instructional Coach
A1: yes. i really reccomand setting up lots of rules in there and dont let people mess around
Other Ts talked about it at school today, and apparently I missed a major film here!
A1: Was part of the planning committee for the last year at Bergen Maker Space with
No game jam experience, ready for some tips!
A1: i had minecraft server like 2 years ago
Maybe not exactly a game jam, but did Minecraft as a summer school class for 3 weeks! have rules, but be FLEXIBLE!
Get on it! It's really good. And quotable.
I never get tired of watching Love Actually. I think I was meant to be British.
A1 I hosted one at & was sure to put play as focus. Playability of everyday objects, like cups & balls,
Hey Shelly! Welcome! We're on Q1: What experience have you had with student game jams...and any tips?
A1: event ran great - demo'd stuff for kids, let them brainstorm game ideas, pitch ideas, create prototype, present!
I've never set up a game jam so I'm here primarily to learn tonight.
and I'm gonna get you on my team at the NYC :)
thanks!! Glad to be here!!
A1: I'm with . Ss have created games in class, but not a full-out game jam. !
interested in whats shared
A1 True ! Good & is a game jam
A1: is a big question - I'm always happy to chat outside of the chat to explain my process
A1: in class - kids come up with design plan, develop game, playtest / iterate, publish when possible
My advice: Don't let structure get in the way if the play that kids put in games
A1 have been a bystander, looking for ideas, etc :)
A1 post-mortems & reflection with facilitators is key
Q2 is here...let's get to it! Also, what challenges do you anticipate if you haven't done a game jam? https://t.co/iuiI4Euu5g
YES! Reflection, reflection, reflection https://t.co/Pc21KGaFnB
A1 post-mortems & reflection with facilitators is key
A1: Having a general guideline for kids as well as goals usually helps them along.
A1 limited, having lots of games happening at once is hectic, but interested to see how ofher tchers do it
Q2: What challenges have you faced in student game jams? How can we overcome them?
A2: When to schedule - typical game jam model may be 48 hours - not necessary for younger kids - try after school club - jam 4 wks
. How long do you set aside for reflections and post-mortems? What techniques do you use?
My students reflect with each part of the project they submit - feedback loop with teacher is important
what are some examples of goals?
A2: i think it is really hard to keep all-at least most of them undercontrol in game
Glad you made it to the chat :) Hope you share insights about class
A2 Challenges are time, being sure to keep play up front. If a kid wants to use Sphero for fun & not obstacle challenge, it's OK!
A2: keeping them quiet lol:)
Missed a couple questions. Thought I was all set and then my daughters called...back now
Quiet is overrated :) Learning can be loud - doesn't have to be unnecessarily so, but loud is ok
I would agree, esp. with younger Ss. Wonder if good to start small, limited supplies, and grow from there?
LIke for the minecraft class by the end of day 1 you had to have a plan in place for your dream house+ start it.
A2: reminding Ss it's for fun; challenge against yourself; scheduling,
A2 Game jams work well as centers/stations in in class. Challenge is balancing how long stations take. Ss feedback need too!
A2: the was set as a 12 hour day - felt appropriate for middle school students compared to entire weekend format
A2 planning, schedule, keeping organized and under control
We're on Q2: Challenges of game jams and how to overcome them.
Thank you Steve. Happy to be here!
I agree!! I just laugh when they are loud; my class is organized chaos! :)
Great idea here...setting up stations. Very cool https://t.co/tl9hTm0q89
A2 Game jams work well as centers/stations in in class. Challenge is balancing how long stations take. Ss feedback need too!
Control is a tricky word - we can let go of control as long as the culture is creative and productive
There are times loud gets to me, but I think there are different kinds of loud- I like the good loud
I like the station idea, tough in one class period https://t.co/cSjWzu1yDp
A2 Game jams work well as centers/stations in in class. Challenge is balancing how long stations take. Ss feedback need too!
Challenges lie in students respecting each others stuff. Had a lot of problems with Ss going into e/o house w/o permission etc.
controlled creative chaos
def! I love the 'engaging type of loud'
Yes - volume might be the same but it's different in the spirit!
Where's - my game jam buddies
Q3: What tools / resources are useful in hosting game jams?
Gotta stretch my fingers before I start shooting out resources for Q3... here they come!
Really good point. Laying out expectations ahead of time is important to keeping creativity respectful https://t.co/wVeYkQF0iS
Challenges lie in students respecting each others stuff. Had a lot of problems with Ss going into e/o house w/o permission etc.
A3 People are greatest resource, from kids to adult facilitators. ran a jam with just junk in kids pockets!
A3: i think i should answer that what game can students use. so here it is -minecraft-world of tanks- game make
Yes! Students are one of the best resources you will have https://t.co/ukMXY5jjbO
A3 People are greatest resource, from kids to adult facilitators. ran a jam with just junk in kids pockets!
A3: For a quick game jam, raid the office supplies! notecards, rubberbands, clips, markers, punches, stamps
but that is when the learning happens. DigCit with starts with griefing
YES! https://t.co/Xs70CwTXio
A3: For a quick game jam, raid the office supplies! notecards, rubberbands, clips, markers, punches, stamps
I have no experience w/ game jam (had to look up what it was). Taking notes and sucking up inspiration. LOVE what is being shared!
Yes - name all the great tools we use
mario maker is also great
Hell, loud usually means something is happening. 😃
A3 I like to mix analog (HedBanz, Apples to Apples mods), digital (Sploder), & tactile/hands-on in stations
YES to analog games! games https://t.co/znMQ5tAiCt
A3 I like to mix analog (HedBanz, Apples to Apples mods), digital (Sploder), & tactile/hands-on in stations
Nothing like just jumping in and learning something new!
Got it! Thanks, useful example
A3: I have kids create levels in - great example of modding
Jumping in is what I do! Right, ?
lol for sure!! The best is when the bell rings & they don't hear it or refuse to leave :)
I love when they're disappointed that class is over.
A3: Amazon has blank playing cards, game boards...fun goodies for game creation!
A3 's See Inside remix is perfect for games and self-expression
What a neat idea! So many skills being learned and taught (by the students) when this happens i bet!!! https://t.co/uIWgTm71CW
A3 I like to mix analog (HedBanz, Apples to Apples mods), digital (Sploder), & tactile/hands-on in stations
Loud kids are active Ss, all in moderation of course https://t.co/B9dlcBzgRY
There are times loud gets to me, but I think there are different kinds of loud- I like the good loud
Q4: How do you inspire students to modify existing games during game jams?
Q3:Went to the dollar store, picked some random objects, and told students to create game and rules. Creations were awesome!
A3: Visit the thrift store and buy up the $1 games. Cheap way to get stuff for jams.
A4: As I mentioned, level editor is good for that
Love it! Dollar stores rule! https://t.co/6xHkLoPpu5
Q3:Went to the dollar store, picked some random objects, and told students to create game and rules. Creations were awesome!
for finishing analog games after the jam
A4: Modding existing games is a great activity - board games, digital games, card games, add a rule, drop a rule
Non-digital would be a fantastic game jam gateway for SPED Ss! So many skills it would teach https://t.co/mo3P0ZCaAU
A3: Amazon has blank playing cards, game boards...fun goodies for game creation!
A4: make them to read book and make story based game
A4: Have 'em play some originals. Then challenge: change it! Apples to Apples, Balderdash, Game of Things
What a fantastic, super easy way to bring game jam thinking and a ton of other awesome into a classroom! https://t.co/hCSZ4uk0cL
Q3:Went to the dollar store, picked some random objects, and told students to create game and rules. Creations were awesome!
A4 Have students play a social game, i.e. Werewolf, then mod it
Q4: After Ss created own game, Ss switched with e/o played them and figured out holes in the game and modified rules
Modding is a good way to get them to the next level https://t.co/XJ10bIwVpo
A4: Have 'em play some originals. Then challenge: change it! Apples to Apples, Balderdash, Game of Things
I love this idea! Thx, Matthew!
Hey Scott! Thanks for popping in!! Good to see you!
Missed a lot of the chat during the drive home, but hopped on my to do some pedaling, thought I'd pop in.
Great idea for getting students started and for students who might need help conceptualizing. Love it! https://t.co/NyqtDH9VMT
A4: Modding existing games is a great activity - board games, digital games, card games, add a rule, drop a rule
Extremely smart idea! https://t.co/TJtCngVQ4a
Q4: After Ss created own game, Ss switched with e/o played them and figured out holes in the game and modified rules
critical part of the process!
Game the interactions in a story. First concept map it, then go from there
Q5: How can we incorporate game jams into PD?
A5: Blood Born Pathegons.... The Game!
A5: what a great idea to have a game jam AS PD and have teams create games for their classes
LOL! OMG, that would be so much better than watching the videos!
Q5:I think adults struggle w/ collaboration sometimes just as much as students do! Working in teams for common goal would be good
A5 works great and you can set you own missions, like Ss, ts want to "do"
A5: Create cross-curricular groups. Find a common theme. Build a game! BAM!
A5: anybody can make a game! NB: one of the most beloved indie dev studios, Double Fine, does an internal game jam every yr.
right! and just think how much we would really learn making it a game!
A5: working as a team and giving everyone what should they focus on
A5: Turns out, a bunch of the games their employees created during those jams were good enough to become full products.
. It could be a great culture-building activity!
A5: So a PD game jam could well lead to a useful tool, and that's invaluable.
- I think we can apply some of the ideas to adult learning! Rapid prototyping of lessons for example?
How can we turn data analysis/school improvement into a game jam? Any ideas??!
A5 Ts creating games & using ideas later with Ss > sit and get PD
Apologies, but I am majorly crashing. Will have to check back for the ending of this amazing chat! TY and see y'all next week!
A5 Can't we play test lessons with colleagues or even Students?
. I would love to see this happen & turn PD into teacher choice!
I have to say, the act of creating a game with a group and shipping it to users is one of the most exhilarating experiences ever.
There's my buddy, lucas :) Hope I didn't guilt you into joining us !
YES! https://t.co/0CzuWu3O0V
I have to say, the act of creating a game with a group and shipping it to users is one of the most exhilarating experiences ever.
It's a bit early, but here's the last question...it's a big one! Everyone needs to answer :) https://t.co/msymvIRkyL
becomes even better when the lesson is the game :)
- Ha!!! Phone buzzes enough you can't ignore!
I bet! We had that feeling when my Ss published a book in iTunes & we tracked it's "sales"
A5 - Why not have a LessonJam?! That'd be cool!
I do this to my school admin when I tag the school in tweets! LOL
A6: Time for my 1st official game jam in my room! It'll follow mandated state writing tests, so the Ss will be ready to have fun!
A6: I'm celebrating by host Gr4-5 game jam after school - but would like to know more about how to sell PD to admin
I think it's a fabulous idea! Love it!
A6 Gotta get my Ss on the map!
- Could be used for lessons all the way up to units or even full courses!
A6 get involved and learn more, and have good snacks :)
Great question, to which I'd love an answer, too! Perhaps creating a prototype idea to show them coolness?
OK - if you couldn't tell, i'm excited about - so many sites -hope everyone can participate https://t.co/LaZ2YtOshL
