#games4ed Archive
#games4ed discussions cover ways in which gaming can be used in education. Games mirror the way the human mind was designed to learn. They motivate players to take risks and actions, persevere through failures, set and achieve increasingly difficult goals, and devote attention, time, and effort to acquiring knowledge and skills. All this while the game is tracking the player’s actions and assessing the player’s achievements and skills. Isn’t this what we want from education?
Thursday May 12, 2016 8:00 PM EDT
Melissa from Nebraska, 11-12 ELA. I admit...I used to collect New Kids on the Block trading cards.
Checking in during dinner. Jared, ELA Teacher for the Deaf, NYC, and I collected pogs for a short time.
Nathan and yes baseball and X-men cards
I don't know how this works.
Is this like a chat room?
Hi ! I am Sam from Ottawa, Canada. This is my first chat
What are pogs? (Happy Thursday, BTW)
Alex from LA.(stuck on 405) Teaching K-6 tech.
Hey ! Keegan here, educational technologist . I used to collect tons of Pokemon cards. :3
who are new kids on the block? Is that like garbage pail kids
Welcome Sam! Glad you can be here for tonight. :)
Hello from Toronto! I'm a first year teacher and I use to collect pogs as well
Welcome community of learners. Mark G here from the great state of NJ, 5th Grade Teacher
Hey all high school Teacher Librarian,CA. Never a collector- brother had garbage pail kids
:) Cool cool. Welcome to !
LOL, no, but I remember those, too. NKOTB=original boy band of early 90s.
You picked a great chat to begin with
Megan, Rutherford NJ, 7th grade ELA teacher. Never collected trading cards, but I did like Pogs!
Matt, NJ, Teacher, collected ET & Star Wars cards in the early 80s!
Hey Arthur, follow the hashtag and hit view all so you can see everyones posts. Are you using web browser or app?
Lots of pog collectors in tonight. Come hang out with this crazy bunch! :D
We'll follow the usual Q1/A1 format for the chat. Q1 coming up in a minute!
I thought Boyz to men was the original boy band
I collected Magic the Gathering in 1993-1994. Sold my collection about 2 years ago to a dealer. Started my sons college savings
Rocking the mobile interface. Looking sharp.
Speaking from a Magic the Gathering (MTG) perspective, I never got into digital game, like feel of cards in hand.
A1 they are easy to change
I think NKOTB was a year or two earlier. Definitely had worse songs than Boys II Men!
A1: Paper-based games don't need wifi and Ss love to play with manipulatives.
Steve from NJ. Big time baseball card collector as a kid. Great memories of collecting, flipping, etc
A1) More accessible. Can ground focus on content over learning to code or work with game engines, etc. Also fun keepsakes! :)
A1: easier to modify on the fly, no power or wifi needed.
Q1: what advantages do paper-based games have over digital?
My Ss made reading cubes out of boxes this week to promote fave book. Happy as clams to cut paper and decorate!
That was going to be my question—if you moved on to Hearthstone or something else? :)
A1. Paper based games allow interpersonal connections & collaboration in ways digital & tech devices can't https://t.co/RYdGtB8GL5
A1: paper based and card games travel well in a back pack. Have games. Will travel. Play anywhere!
A1 anytime fun! No WiFi no electricity no computer no problem
there is something to say for the cross the table interaction for sure!
A1 paper-based provide a level of equality to all types of students
I want to know more about this! I've been thinking of something like this for a final project.
A1: Easy to change and modify--good for the classrm. Can be made easier or harder quickly
I used to collect marbles as a kid, but never really knew how to play !
After MTG, I tried a few others, a Star Wars game, still have those cards, never took. Nope, I am pretty boring now.
A1) Also, can engage younger Ss who still need the concrete. Game design at early age needs physics. Shoutout to !
A1) They allow for more "moments" with your opponents. I fondly remember some fun family game nights! https://t.co/6BIkKfS03A
A1 easier to reinvent. Add new manipulatives, take things out & change up rules. They are more hands on than digital games
Mom, frmr teacher, DMM . ... i've missed the last couple chats. Glad to be here! Missed you guys! https://t.co/iL5IGeKznR
and no need to charge any batteries!
Yay!! so glad you're back!
I made a trading card generator with GForms & GSheet. Game needs tinkering. Check it out if u want 2 help https://t.co/8vIP4059O3
Where do you get the box from?
I LOVED these. (Still do.)
The is real... wi-fi and connectivity issues hinder good ed-gaming. https://t.co/G2cMHxvyNn
A1: easier to modify on the fly, no power or wifi needed.
Christine, DE, Social Media. Collected the "bubble gum" cards in 70's, but really just wanted the gum. https://t.co/X3Z8MdXQZV
A2: we can deconstruct and analyze the game mechanics.
This is a pretty cool idea Melissa. Thanks for sharing!
A1 paper based are easier to mod and have students hack
My back-up plan for technology failure: Game day! I keep a large stash of games just for those days
Hello friends, Spiri from PA, popping in for a bit 😊
A2 a lot of prototypes start in some paper form. Helps students gets ideas down in an easy to edit form
Q2: many game designers use paper prototyping in early game design. Why would this be beneficial for students to adopt?
I never thought of it that way, but very true. Really forces students to think about how mechanics work together
A2. Something about holding the paper in your hand that makes the process real. Conceptualization is tangible for many learners
A2: easier to make changes
A2: it's a different level of design thinking to create a playable prototype to test mechanics.
Only the beginning! and thanks for the feedback and shoutout https://t.co/xK1cLwbfV7
Rocking the mobile interface. Looking sharp.
brilliant back up. The internet can be shady sometimes.
A2. Comp screens especially Chromebook & smaller don't give a big enough picture. Sometimes I need a whole wall to see the BIG pic
backup for technology failures is always a must !
A2: When I have students design games, I use paper planning sheets to gather ideas and plan. Also use paper for platformer layout
Hi, Rachelle frm Pgh, Span & Fr. T, A1 paper based, no worries abt wifi, build relatshps, collab & teamwk,
A2: Creativity--a basic pencil/paper helps free the mind and connect to creative ideas without thinking about interface
And it is a good parallel to the writing process too- prewriting first to get ideas down and organized
A2) Not as time intensive for a paper prototype. Also, help students make the transition to digital later if desired. Foundation!
A2) It's important to have basic understanding & appreciation for it
A2 Leads to crit think/prob solv, brainstorming and work thru on paper, change mind, edit, see whole picture
A2: when we begin game design we start pencil & paper first. Easier to focus on product when using familiar implements
Such a good insight. I tend to use big sheets of paper when planning large projects for just that reason https://t.co/UHFlFGHI9z
A2. Comp screens especially Chromebook & smaller don't give a big enough picture. Sometimes I need a whole wall to see the BIG pic
A2 The iterative process, feedback from blind playtesting
Agreed. Been thinking more about this & other forms of recently. I think all Ts should consider.
Yes, 100% agree! I am sitting here with a notebook and pen next to me at all times!
Time is such a precious commodity. Sometimes a paper-based game shows proficiency in less time
Quick brainstorming will always be fastest with pen and paper. Many great ideas started from a cocktail napkin.
And we should show Ss benefits of getting feedback on their early products more quickly can improve their final product
We used paper prototyping in my graduate program and i LOVED it. Helped me understand UX better. https://t.co/4Y00d5kPeE
A2: when we begin game design we start pencil & paper first. Easier to focus on product when using familiar implements
A3 how to improve and test in a group
And that feedback can be easy if Ss are working around paper prototype and you can see the big picture of it
transition is much easier. When my kids write interactive fiction they write entire story before creating the dig game
A3) Storyboarding and connecting narrative dots can be better paper-based. Especially for large, complex projects.
A3. Empathy and Emotional Intelligence (EQ) are best learned through paper-games. Anything human related...always better IRL
A3: Interpersonal skills and teamwork come to mind. Listening, eye contact, reading social cues
Hi joining 1st time, Matt, K-5 Art, TX. Very interested in line of Q's tonight.
A3 oral communication skills and just being nice comes into play more with paper based games
Glad you're here! Always enjoy reading your tweets out in the twitterverse
A3: think it depends on game
teamwork is there unless candy is involved
A3. When I learn new content or work on large research projects I need notecards, books, etc. https://t.co/BawcdMSmyX
The art of disagreeing too!
Paul from Toronto jumping in. HS English and media studies
Welcome Matthew! Glad you are joining us tonight.
A3 Ss work together, build social skills as well, learn abt each othr, some content betr learnd w/hands on activ
A3: I think understand process of the game can be better understood through paper game. Once that happens, tech vers. works better
A3: but playing FTF enhances collaboration & communication
A4: Any card game for sure. You can't learn to "read" your opponent if you're playing them online! https://t.co/Yzuh9xtAwf
A4: Scaffolding learning, the lure of leveling up/full collections, combined powers, evolved characters.
A4: I've thought about creating writing structure games w/cards. Reinforce paragraph/essay structure with strategic card play
We have to jump off early tonight, but thanks for a fun topic!
F2F times makes people feel valued https://t.co/X75KbWHEKn
A3: but playing FTF enhances collaboration & communication
Yes! Characters have a selection of cards/arguments to give to other characters during a "debate battle"
I think there are times when f2f is essential like a theology course where discussion & ?s are essential. https://t.co/hkig30c8QJ
A3 Ss work together, build social skills as well, learn abt each othr, some content betr learnd w/hands on activ
A4 Have them create decks based on content; characters in the novel, immune system, etc.
A4) Ss use facts, data, great for persuasion
A4) Having a harder time with this questions. Loving all your responses though
If we are going to talk card games, can I get an Conversation going?
Yes! And if you're talking , we'll need on board!
Agreed. Some Ss prefer the video game, but at times Ss must practice interaction & discussion w/social norms
I have used that game to have Ss make Civil War cards of North and South with special cards like Abe Lincoln and Grant, etc.
So cool. Do they battle each other, or is it the experience of creating a set of cards? Either way, I like it
A4. Argument Wars () on uses the card concept to teach Ss to apply their arguments and supreme court cases.
Ok you win. This sounds like a really super, cool learning opportunity. https://t.co/bv0UCFOIih
I have used that game to have Ss make Civil War cards of North and South with special cards like Abe Lincoln and Grant, etc.
We basically use same rules as Werewolf, where south is the Werewolf (we’re from NJ) but diff people have special powers
I tried to think of a way to integrate it with Of Mice and Men (that class loves Werewolf), but unsucessful yet.
A4 Card games are great for learning abt people, I am following on this question :)
So many fantastic chat tonight all around the same time. Jumping into before begins in 20 minutes
Super fun! And each round only takes a few minutes
A4: learning the art of discussion by using cards.
is now trending in USA, ranking 46
Thursday is just an amazing chat night! Glad you're here for a bit!!
A4: As a teacher of game design and development I always value looking at the game mechanics and card games show a lot abt balance
Q5: What other paper-based games are winners in your classrm? Or paper-based games that could be modified? https://t.co/ztGccznLWg
Really Keegan, I thought you would have gone BERSERKER!
Such a great, but dangerous, game! 😃
Always trying to reduce paper so make traditional games more tech based for students to utilize, save space and paper
Where can I make my own card?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
LOL, I didn’t have the link to that artwork on hand. It is on my work computer and wanted to be ~quick. ;P
This werewolf game has me intrigued
D5 Dixit is good for story creation and prompts
I picked up off of but I never opened it. Hoping it becomes collectable.
the concept is there, the mechanics are there, it's the game that needs to be ironed out.
Glad to know, I hear the new game is not appropriate for young people
A5 I still have bingo fans, Spanish vocab with bingo, :)
Like the card idea &thinking how 2se cards for quizzes &buss battle 2save or kill off opponents/selves https://t.co/2wl1w8p56J
Such a great, but dangerous, game! 😃
I think I was shipped an "already used" set. No shrinkwrap. No happiness from me, either.
is it a Google App Script? What license did you give it? Wondering if I can take a look under the hood? :)
A5: I create my own most of the time. My final exam is a card-collecting game with superheroes.
I've got a couple of classes that really enjoy it. Reminds me of "Mafia" that we used to play years ago.
Bingo is great game &can be used in so many ways. 2day designing Connect 4 game w/Shakespeare symbolism https://t.co/2XLjVJOVmJ
A5 I still have bingo fans, Spanish vocab with bingo, :)
What a cool twitter chat I've just stumbled upon
Alas, already to our last question ! Q6: What resources do you use/know of/have for paper-based games? https://t.co/4agdpmniwa
Thanks for joining, love the Australian rep. Do you play w/ Ss?
A5) Does count as paper-based? At least partially? ;)
Not Minecraft yet not, big fans of Kahoot and Mystery Skype games
A6 There are a bunch of free card deck creation tools online
Not a game, but love using papercraft blocks w/ my Ss for math and building. Here’s a link to my drive: https://t.co/u8JKA3wD5Y
Really kind of want to work for them...
A6 I put this together for ARGs, but there are many resources to help build and design paper games. https://t.co/1kvpC8swdf
did you make these beauties?
I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to another great chat! You've given me lots to think about!
A5: i actually don't use any but now I am very interested in it!
Goal is to make an entire papercraft scene in my classroom with 1in cubes by June 20, w/ characters and all. Assembling build team
. Thank you for hosting tonight! Love talking about paper game design. :)
