A1 Learning about the philosophical differences between pedagogy and andragogy can help with this transition! Do you want to “lead children” (pedagogy) or do you truly feel each child can contribute and you can serve simply as the “leader of people” (andragogy) #HackLearning
A1 Sure, we know stuff our students don’t. How did we learn? Did somebody stand at the front of a room and tell us? Or did we explore, experiment, ask questions, try things that didn’t work, read, read more, take breaks, make stuff, get feedback, and repeat? #HackLearning

A1: Gallery walks are one of my favorite student-centered activities. Allows movement, discussion, and a chance to see different thinking/perspectives. Can be used in a variety of ways for a variety of subjects. #HackLearning
A1: Put students in the driver’s seat, give them voice, choice and a road map, guide them on their learning journey and have frequent pit-stops to check in & ensure smooth running! #hacklearning
A1: Choice Boards and Genius Hour are two ways educators can make the transition from a teacher-centered classroom to a learner-centered one.

A1: Using PBL in the classroom helps teachers move to facilitation mode. It's almost impossible to be the sage on the stage in PBL classrooms. #HackLearning
A1: Put students in the driver’s seat, give them voice, choice and a road map, guide them on their learning journey and have frequent pit-stops to check in & ensure smooth running! #hacklearning
A1: Lots of tools & strategies, but it starts with a mind shift and being comfortable with giving up control. That can be scary sometimes! #HackLearning
A1: Replace all your lectures with self-made videos. It allows you to maintain your authenticity as a teacher but opens the door for self-paced, mastery-based grading. The students truly get to own their own learning #HackLearning

A1 Purposeful Planning ... make room for choices in product I believe is the easiest first step - sure an essay here & there is necessary, but maybe not every time #HackLearning
A1 Plan lessons that are inquiry based and join the students in the research, questioning, and discovery phases of the process rather than drowning them in lecture or powerpoint. #hacklearning
A1: I think a great place to start is to really get to know your students, so you can guide them to learning through their own interests. #hacklearning
A1: Jump into something like Genius Hour with a growth mindset. Realize mistakes will be made and you will survive. Nothing will be perfect. Improv at its highest! #HackLearning
A1: Of all I think it begins with giving kids ownership of their learning. I give kiddos the keys and I work intentionally to create a culture of student ownership from how I grade to how I teach. #hacklearning
A1: Put students in the driver’s seat, give them voice, choice and a road map, guide them on their learning journey and have frequent pit-stops to check in & ensure smooth running! #hacklearning
A1: I believe it is critical for Ts to help Ss find the most value in their learning. Equip Ss with the inquiry & learning tools that they need so that they can pursue topics with an approach that is meaningful to them and still leads to desired learning outcomes #HackLearning
A1: allow students to have power in their learning. Let them have choice in the direction they go and be there to learn with and FROM them along the way. #HackLearning
A1 With Sage on Stage, you’re limiting the potential to the bottom of the pyramid. It’s neater & controlled, but lacks potential. If U take the risk, relinquish control, & shift to guide on the ride, UR students can climb higher! #hacklearning
A1. Start small with a lesson or two by designing engaging student centered activities. It might take some serious planning depending on comfort but it’s more fun to let the Ss guide and help. They get their own light bulb moment. #HackLearning
You don’t have to dive right into the deep end of student-driven learning. Take baby steps…

A1 When Ts let Ss take the lead and share their thinking, magical things happen. Give them wait time before ‘giving’ them answers. Ts often learn from Ss too as result. #HackLearning
Great tips! The one that speaks to me the loudest is "productive struggle." Really forces the T to pay close attention to each Ss zone of proximal development! #hacklearning

#hacklearning Hahahaha I can imagine myself going to jail for hacking Verizon so I can get on the unlimited plan LMAO then people be "Hey smart guy write me when you're in jail". I don't involve myself with that anymore I will use that skill selfishly and for private reasons.
I agree with Tamra. One way to accomplish this: Do the stuff we ask our students to do, which can both inform our own learning as well as create models & demonstrations to prompt theirs. #hacklearning
Those who teach upper elementary, middle school, and high school could learn a TON about student-centered learning from our PK-2 colleagues. #HackLearning
A1: The Teacher is a critical component of the learning process. Ts don't have to be on the sidelines in order for Ss to be #empowered. Ts must know who their Ss are and help guide them to explore in a way that promotes individual learning abilities #hacklearning
#HackLearning We start by giving students time to explore and use open-ended materials to create. We slow things down and #lookclosely at the little things.
#hacklearning 100% Matthew, this is my passion, allowing Ss to learn about the world with the world. My flipgrid is the most used globally in the world, all supporting Student lead learning about the big issues https://t.co/YW6fKaEjrG
A1: For a new teacher attempting to learn to guide remember the 80 percent rule.... If you are speaking 80% of the time they are not truly in charge of learning...if students are speaking 80% of the time you are guiding more than speaking. #hacklearning
A1 begin small by altering 20 minutes of learning time tomorrow from teacher talk to student talk - consider small campfire discussions not whole group around a provocative question, conundrum or problem. Use a talk turn taking protocol #hacklearning
A1) I like to see Ss movement and hands on activities. Getting students out of there seats working on activities collaboratively& bring them together for discussion afterwards.#hacklearning
A1. I think it's about starting small; similar to how students who aren't used to student-centered depending on their previous school expeirences. Small chunks of time, intentional activities, modify your existing routines, build, and repeat and grow. #hacklearning
A1: Tried different ways to share my feelings about active learning and move teachers to learning facilitators...even tried an Ignite Presentation on Active learning #hacklearninghttps://t.co/awSLEsAS0g
Q2: What are some resources Guides on the Ride can use to help facilitate the transition from a teacher-centered clasroom to a learner-centered one?
#hacklearning
Yes! We have to take a step back and remember how we learned the things that we know! This is overlooked way too often and because of it, we lose credibility as educators. #hacklearning
A1 Sure, we know stuff our students don’t. How did we learn? Did somebody stand at the front of a room and tell us? Or did we explore, experiment, ask questions, try things that didn’t work, read, read more, take breaks, make stuff, get feedback, and repeat? #HackLearning
I completely agree! We forget that Ss are still kids, even when they are taller than us! They still need time to play, to experiment, to mess around and to see the joy in finding out new things. #HackLearning
Moving away from the "I know Everything" ... "take notes while I speak syndrome" ... having kids find their answer is key ... many will call this student-centered learning ... i just call it learning. #hacklearning
You could create an outstanding reflective question using the graphic and your statement about why the Sage on the Sage could rarely if ever get to the higher levels of the pyramid. Love it! #hackLearning
A1 With Sage on Stage, you’re limiting the potential to the bottom of the pyramid. It’s neater & controlled, but lacks potential. If U take the risk, relinquish control, & shift to guide on the ride, UR students can climb higher! #hacklearning

#Hacklearning A2 As always, #students are the best resource for the direction of our #teaching; that being said, don't forget about old fashioned #exittickets We need to know that #students are thinking, and what they want to ask.

A2: AJ Juliani, who coined the phrase, “Guide on the Ride” offers some excellent suggestions in this blog post:
Forget Guide on the Side…Students Need a Guide on the Ride https://t.co/ZFCX7Ifp2z via @ajjuliani#hacklearning
#hacklearning We need to think about making out students Future Ready for the world they will be in control of. Links to real world learning through Inquiry skills, questions. The #SDGs state our Ss need to be inventors, innovators and campaigners.
A1: Curriculum Is Key!
I'm seeing firsthand the power of curriculum that's designed to support teachers in shifting into a facilitator role, in order to foster more active learning by S's.
Ed's using @openupresources curricula said This!

I agree with this ethos, Matthew. At the same time, any world can be approached (or ignored) in a fairly passive stance if one chooses. (Case in point: using devices to consume vs. create) So, I see responsibilities/opportunities for us to teach ways to engage. #hacklearning
This is one of those golden Pd nuggets you get from #HackLearning It’s one thing to let students lead, it’s another to teach them to lead and offer the opportunity.
One of the best ways to ensure that when students lead their own discussions is to teach them reciprocal teaching format. https://t.co/0jzOSRfHIK#HAckLearning
Looking forward to the day ALL students have online access as well as computers at home. Also, looking forward to all classes being 1:1. Not there yet in my case. This would be a dream of mine! #hacklearning
A1: Throw out last year’s planbook. Let it go. These are different students, different learners, different humans. Get creative based on the kids in front of you. #HackLearning#sunchat@LeeAraoz
A1: A Guide on the Ride teaches self-management skills and focuses on developing a growth mindset in the Ss. The curriculum takes passenger seat while cultivating the learner drives the car. #HackLearning
Q2: What are some resources Guides on the Ride can use to help facilitate the transition from a teacher-centered clasroom to a learner-centered one?
#hacklearning
A1: I find @claychristensen and the Christensen institute to be incredibly helpful for blended and competency based learning. All their material are data driven and they are leaders in distruptive innovation #hackLearning
A1 step back, listen more. The sounds of learning (or not learning) can be an eye opening experience 4 teachers. Plan an activity that puts the Ss totally in center stage, then stop & truly watch/listen/learn #hacklearning@pammoran
A2 My book, EMPOWER Your Students, is about guiding students to make learning meaningful for themselves, using tools from psychology research and practice. https://t.co/gJkpGucobu#HackLearning
My Student-Centered Classrooms page https://t.co/l34E825ehD "Let students drive while teachers guide." We need to listen to and heed #stuvoice and let them lead their learning under our guidance. #HackLearning
I do Learning Centers ... kids have a learning activity ... questions to ponder ... they find the answer. I get a lot of the "How come you don't teach us anything?" ... i'm like I create learning opportunities ... #hacklearning

I have seen Ss thrive using this format. Also, some Ss who may not have engaged in ‘whole group’ become more engaged and collaborate in smaller groups. #HackLearning

DELIVERY of instruction must change along with learning spaces!!
Rearrange the desks AND then be sure not to be "The Sage on the Stage," but “The GUIDE on the RIDE."
#HackLearning
A2: Provide menu and choice boards, make them relevant to students, connected to content and provide a variety of means to produce authentic learning! 👍 #hacklearning
A2. Well .... I would like to suggest that for adult learners .... @conniehamilton model and create mini videos of the amazing job she does of learner-centered professional development. When I watched it I was in awe. #HackLearning
A2: Read everything and combine all resources to compliment your learning community. One learning modality is not enough anymore. #hqpbl is a@combination of the modalities. #hacklearning
A2: #UDL Now by @KatieNovakUDL made me completely rethink how student-centered my classroom really was. Great book to spark reflection and action. #hacklearning
Kids have been programmed to believe that learning only occurs when the teacher is speaking. We have to change their mindset into believing they can find their own answers. #hacklearning
A1. By letting my kids be the driver in their own education! More hooks, hands on, no more sitting at desks but comfy seating and moving around- group work, my kids teach us and present... #HackLearning
A2 Hack Learning books are practical tools w/ doable strategies for teachers to shift from teacher-centered to student-centered classroom. #hacklearning
A2: I've long been an advocate for @barryLane and his strategies not only to allow Ss ownership of their writing, but to further build relationships between student and teacher through writing and inquiry #hackLearning
This is why giving Ts time to collaborate during PD is so important. Some of the best learning comes when Ts at different levels share with each other #hacklearning

A2: there is so much great technology out there! I am moving towards a flipped classroom with #nearpod and google classroom that allows for Self-paced lessons and more time in chosen stations. #HackLearning
A2: #UDL Now by @KatieNovakUDL made me completely rethink how student-centered my classroom really was. Great book to spark reflection and action. #hacklearning
Most understand ... they just like it when someone else tells them what to write down ... highlight ... how to write their notes on the side of the paper ... how to spell things. #hacklearning
A2 Reading, tweeting, coffee talks, spending time with colleagues discussing the art and craft of teaching. Getting in others classrooms. #hacklearning
My Student-Centered Classrooms page https://t.co/l34E825ehD "Let students drive while teachers guide." We need to listen to and heed #stuvoice and let them lead their learning under our guidance. #HackLearning
A1. You can make your classroom more student-centered by giving kids choice. I have never seen my students more engaged than they are during our student-led book clubs we started this month! #hacklearning
The aniticipation is getting REAL! Students picked the books from @Scholastic. Students wrote blogs convincing me to order a set of the book they are dying to read. FINALLY students will begin their book clubs next week! 📚😍📚
A3 #Hacklearning I am so fortunate to live in a community with a number of retired #educators. It helps so much to ask them questions. Other than that, I try to get away from the security of my hallway and speak to #teachers in other parts of the building.
Curriculum that's designed around engaging, hand's on activities for S's – all carefully aligned to learning progressions + standards – makes shift to 'guide on the side' attainable!
Curriculum tees it up, so T's can knock it out of park.
#hacklearninghttps://t.co/ECpIWMXcCl
I can't remember the last lesson I "taught" in front of the class ... I talk in front of the class, but it is more for clarification than direct instruction. #hacklearning
A2: There's a diff between differentiated instruction and differentiated assessment. Diff assessment with #choice board/menus is more common than diff instr. Allowing Ss to learn from #video, online resources, guided inquiry via #edtech tools is a step #HackLearning
A3. I wish I had the link ready to go for how a teacher can use their own phone to video themselves - following the idea @Ms_A_Yeh just shared #Hacklearning
A1: was just reading in #LCInnovationabout teachers creating structures for students to choose how they show their learning and choosing the topic they want to study - for instance use the EQs and EUs to limit the scope #HackLearning
I had an observer/evaluator watch my class and track teacher vs. student talk. It was shocking how much I was talking. It lead me to shift from lectures to self-made videos #HackLearning#blendedlearning
A2 RX for change - when UVa Med School moved to a new model for med students learning to serve patients well - look what framed learning in and learning out as pedagogy #hacklearning
A well designed learning whether called PBL or not always includes the three nonnegotiables at my school authentic, relevant, and complex always focused on the stages human go through to problem solve. #hacklearning
A3 #Hacklearning This is one of the many wonderful things about #Twitter; I know I can ask a question and get a thoughtful reply, not a "we already talked about that," which doesn't really help.
#powertruth we do our students great service when we design glorious hybrids of both best practices & innovative notions & personalized strategies; plus, we create uniquely our own learning environments this way too #HackLearning
A2: Read everything and combine all resources to compliment your learning community. One learning modality is not enough anymore. #hqpbl is a@combination of the modalities. #hacklearning
Asking “How come you don’t teach anything?” comes from a sage-on-the-stage image of what “school” is. Students might not realize the pervasiveness of that image or that it doesn’t benefit them. #HackLearning
Students searched for books on Scholastic, then wrote blogs convincing me to purchase a set of the book they found for book clubs. Kids were so passionate when they realized that opinion writing has a real impact beyond writing class! Read and comment: https://t.co/dxpjmB8GYH
They do a ton of learning on their own ... how to shade their drawings ... code in minecraft ... how to play a particular piece of music, but they don't think of that as learning because it is what they want to do. #hacklearning
True- PBL framed in an authentic, meaningful problem enhanced by any tool a student chooses - including but not always Digital - puts the student in charge of their own learning. Teachers need to take a risk that they may fail too- and model their own learning. #HackLearning
A2 The 1st step 2 becoming a guide is 2 accept a fail forward culture. Being a sage is maintaining control, but limiting potential. Being a guide is giving up control. Teachers need to feel supported to get messy! #HackLearning
That is great! Love the Ss choices! We know that when Ss have choice in reading they will engage more. Awesome! I would love to know how it goes! #HackLearning
A1. You can make your classroom more student-centered by giving kids choice. I have never seen my students more engaged than they are during our student-led book clubs we started this month! #hacklearning

Also – the classrooms are abuzz, because the lessons are WAY-engaging.
Not hard to be 'guide on the side' when your curriculum lets you teach math like This. S's naturally come to own the learning!
#CurriculumMatters#hacklearninghttps://t.co/164sWJ31Lt
For years I've been wanting to do a hands-on activity mixing colors to explore ratios, but could never figure out the practical logistics. Then today I came across this interactive in @IllustrateMath - mind blown! @openupresources#mtbos#iteachmath
A3: Whole Brain Teaching's Chris Biffle led a conference where he had someone time how long he talked vs. how long the audience shared together. Even he was at 60% Teacher Talk while focusing on it! #ittakeseffort#HackLearning
At my school we found our reflection tools must match the type of thinking g we are eliciting. In our book we provide 8 to 10 types of reflections for each stage of thinking. #hacklearning
A3: Our Students have been Guides on the Ride, sitting on the bench, in many cases, for quite some time. Let's learn from our Students because each is an individual who has so much to offer #hacklearning
#hacklearning A3 One of the best #learning experiences I had in my lifetime (in the 80's!) was from a #teacher who ditched the #textbook, and "gasp!" had conversations with us and then chose the resources that helped us #learn! Thank you, Mr. Arnoldi!
Educators can become the guide by using Gamification, or project based learning. You can also use choice boards to give them choice in their response types. #HackLearning
#hacklearning@m_drez is an amazing educator changing classrooms locally and globally. He is all about knowing your students, using modern ways to engage students and he lead by example. A must follow.
While I'm so glad your students are getting this opportunity, I can't help but think what would happen if it was what all kids experienced every year! #hacklearning
A3: EdCamps. If you get a chance, go to one. This is the epitome of student centered learning. Is it possible to make a classroom an edcamp? #HackLearning
A3: I think all of our schools are full of them. Ask other Ts if you can come and observe during planning time (if possible). Reflect on their strategies and your own. Practice reflection as frequently as possible. #HackLearning
