Hi #mtedchat I'm running a bit late.....I'm Nikki, tech coach/PD trainer for @MontanaPBS I spent today in Three Forks working with Ts and ended the day teaching 1st graders to use @Seesaw Great day!
A1: I think the biggest change since I was a student is the idea of active learning instead of passive. I was easily distracted and didn't follow along very well. Still true, truth be told. #mtedchat
A1 I think digital learning is the biggest change I've seen. I grew up in the 80's the age of dittos, film strips and record players! So many changes now! #MTedchat
Yes, I agree! I think if I could have talked about what I knew using tools like @Seesaw to draw, write and tell I would have felt more confident in myself #MTedchat
A1 I think the biggest change I've seen is a switch from the teacher having all the knowledge to a more student centered approach that teaches students how to access and process information for themselves. #mtedchat
I know I would have had a more positive one. I'm a very visual learner... latched on quickly to supporting students using interactive notebooking. Love that students engage in learning in a way that fits them. #mtedchat

I remember going to the "media room" at MSU and having to learn how to use the ditto machine, laminator, overhead, etc. I've never once seen a ditto machine outside of that room. #mtedchat
In fact, I tell Ps that one reason I am using SeeSaw is to helpthem "see" what learning looks like in today's classroom. Learning doesn't always produce a tactile piece of evidence. #mtedchat
A2) I did not learn how to be a student until my MA program. I had figured out how to "work the system" up until then. My own learning styles make me conscience of the different ways people learn. #mtedchat
You and I are SO much alike, it blows me away sometime. To this day, the art of skim and scan and search are critical for me to keep up. #mtedchat Slow reader, slow processor, but retain forever.
A2: Most challenging... Access to all the information in the world. It has broken down barriers and caused my to be more engaged in personal interests than school or work tasks. #mtedchat
Yes, I agree. When I first started teaching, the goal was out of sight out of mind and I collected them ALL the time. Now they are a tool to learn with. #MTedchat
A2 The way math is taught has been a really difficult switch for me. Not because I have an issue with how it's taught, but because I was taught in the era of memorization. I can tell my brain doesn't process information the same way some of my students. Working on it #MTedchat
A2 I think reporting progress to Ps has shifted to be lengthier and more daunting for Ts. The one page subjective report card has been replaced by the multipage standards based grading document. It's probably for the best but it feels like a lot more work for Ts #MTedchat

A2: I think the biggest shift I had to make was moving into a walk-to-read program. I felt like I lost touch with the students both with relationships and academically. Transitioned to Daily 5 so when kids came/went, I could still work with all. #mtedchat
Q3: On a scale of 1-4, rate how you generally handle change with a 1 being “resistant to” or “challenged by” and a 4 being “What ev-s I got this” and give example to add context. #MTedchat
I get that... I feel we are always a work in progress... He, he... hence the chat topic tonight. It's a bit selfishly motivated :) #mtedchat Making a number of changes this year... really trying to support everyone (including me!! ;)
Hmm. I was taught certain ways, but took the time and few math PD sessions to learn other visual and logical ways to teach math. So beneficial. #mtedchat
I would submit...the strategies necessary to meet the increasing needs of these kids has outpaced the increasing need. Does not make it any easier in the classroom...but there are tools available. #mtedchat
Q3: On a scale of 1-4, rate how you generally handle change with a 1 being “resistant to” or “challenged by” and a 4 being “What ev-s I got this” and give example to add context. #MTedchat
I agree... There has to be a way to simplify... Though, I do think that after a few years will get easier. Parents will come up through the grades learning more about their students strengths and areas in need of support. #mtedchat
A3 I have a different answer to this Q depending on where I was in my career. In the first 8 years I was a 1-2, change bugged me and made me uncomfortable. Experience helped me to be more flexible. Now, I think I'm a 4. #MTedchat
Q3: On a scale of 1-4, rate how you generally handle change with a 1 being “resistant to” or “challenged by” and a 4 being “What ev-s I got this” and give example to add context. #MTedchat
A3 I think it depends on the change. If it is something that matches up with my philosophy and what I think is best for kids I'm all for it like a 3-4. But I'm also stubborn and will drag my heels if I don't see the benefit for kids. #mtedchat
A3. As the impetus for the change...I'd best say 4. If "Our Focus Is On The Kids" the needs of the kids in our district drive the change in our system. #mtedchat
Q3: On a scale of 1-4, rate how you generally handle change with a 1 being “resistant to” or “challenged by” and a 4 being “What ev-s I got this” and give example to add context. #MTedchat
A4: I think I am generally a 4... As admin and instructional coach, I really need to work to ensure we build in supports for all along the continuum 1-4... I know it can be overwhelming when too many ideas come to fast...without time to process and prepare. #mtedchat
Q3: On a scale of 1-4, rate how you generally handle change with a 1 being “resistant to” or “challenged by” and a 4 being “What ev-s I got this” and give example to add context. #MTedchat
A3) I'm closer to a 4. I like to lead change. Esp when it comes to tech in the classroom. I love trying new things and seeing what my Ss can do with it. I've had to learn this, too! #mtedchat

A2. I'm not sure. Still a fairly new T, so trying to figure things out! I love that so many of the changes are toward something I wish was present when I was a student! #MTedchat
A2.2
One thought I have had is that sometimes it is hard for teachers to adjust to changes- especially in tech. Would love to see more accessible PD around that area & see Ts who are unsure take a risk & advantage! #MTedchat
Ha! I get it. In the last 2 years... 3 cars (Sold 1, Bought because 1 was totaled), 3 residences, 3 jobs, 2 different states.
I'm ready to be still. #mtedchat
A4 I've really been demonstrating the benefits of having Ss do daily reflections at the end of the day. Also, incorporating growth mindset lessons into classroom meetings and daily practice. #MTedchat
Ooooo... good answer. I honestly think that is what led me into becoming an educator. As a student I struggled. In college, I had a couple profs who really supported growth over perfection. I love that part as an educator. Growth is everything #mtedchat
A3. So long as it is purposeful & well executed I love it. When it is just following a fad or not being implemented correctly it drives me crazy. Using tech for the sake of using tech is a good example. #MTedchat

I often describe education as a on-going action research project where the variables are constantly shifting and the subjects never stand still. #mtedchat ;)
A3 I think I'd lean more towards a 4 in most cases. I love to learn and think growth is an ongoing process therefore I must be open to feedback, reflection, and change #MTedchat
A4) I feel like I was a voice that helped get iPads in the K-1 classrooms in my district. Effective use of tech has to mean it is accessible. #mtedchat
A4 I think the change I've been most outspoken about is giving students choice in reading and the importance of fostering a love of reading rather than relying on a textbook, programs, or god forbid AR #mtedchat
I was working at a school that was moving toward IB status. There were a ton of neat changes happening in terms of curriculum & it was amazing to be part of all that! I'm sad I left, but happy to be in Bozeman :) #MTedchat
That is great... As an instructional coach, I learned that my work became less about teaching and supporting teachers in "doing" and specific thing, and more about coaching ability to handle change and collaborate. Need to do same with students. #mtedchat
I love the IB Framework as well. Hope you were able to glean lots from the professional development. I think so much from that program can easily be worked into any classroom. #mtedchat
A4 Going through National Board Certification changed the way I taught and the way students learned. It's something I continue to advocate for. I'm so grateful for that kind of PD #MTedchat#NBCTstrong
A5: One of the most powerful continues to be meaningful tech integration... both for learners and for system efficiency. Infrastructure must be updated to support devices...devices need to be deployed/maintained and teaching and learning must be the focus. #mtedchat
A5 That's easy! This new position has been the most challenging (and rewarding) as I shifted from working with children to adult learners as a coach. I've learned so much about the importance of building relationships and meeting people where they are. #MTedchat
A5: The most challenging change I made was moving to a central office role as our district's instructional coaching model moved away from residency coaches. I had such a hard time be distanced from students and teachers. #mtedchat Let me to seek rural principalship.
A5 I would have to say NBC. That led me to TLI which led me to other leadership opportunities. The growth keeps coming and coming from that one decision. #MTedchat

A5 Moving back to MT & starting at a new school. Everything was different. For how little money we had in AZ we were pretty progressive. We're making some good changes at my school but it's a slow process. I want to jump all in but also support my coworkers #mtedchat
A5 Remaining true to myself as an educator, sometimes relying more on my instinct and less on the trendy educational buzzwords and practices. there is no replacement for genuineness and authentic. #MTedchat
A6: Generally checking in with those impacted can be a huge factor in sustainability of any kind of system shift. If it impacts kids, check in...if it impacts parents...check in... custodial staff... Everyone. #mtedchat
A6. Create a positive relationships and culture within your school! We work so hard to do that within our classrooms, that we sometimes forget that grownups need the same thing #MTedchat
