Welcome to #MEMSPAchat - We are STARTING NOW on "The Love's of Leadership"
I'll be moderating tonight's chat, and thankfully my wife totally understands how important this collaboration is as a leader! LOL
Let's start with some introductions! Who is ready?
Good evening group! Scott from mid Michigan. Middle school dean. Can’t believe we had so much snow and now back to 45 today! Crazy weather! #MEMSPAchat
Hello, #MEMSPAchat, Mark here, elementary principal in Hopkins, MN checking in from the front lobby of Gatewood Elementary on conference night, right next to the Lost & Found.
A1: Need to love what we do every day. It plays such a large role in our lives. As well, we have to have love for our Ss, staff, community. We have to be able to show the love and passion we have to drive success and positivity. #MEMSPAchat
Wow! Always on the move! It’s great to watch your travels across the country and share the stories about the great educators in each state. #MEMSPAchat
A1. LOVE is the prerequisite skill to any position working with kids, and THE essential skill for leading a developing and growing a learning community. #MEMSPAchat
A1: My first action to my leadership vision: Love, Laugh, Learn (the L to #LeadPositive). With love comes care and trust: two important pieces to success in relationships. I consider all of the people in our middle school--my family. You have to love your family. #MEMSPAchat
A1: Love & leadership go hand in hand because this business is all about relationship building. I’m a believer in leading with my heart & with compassion because I truly believe #otherpeoplematter#MEMSPAchat
A1: if we don’t love our job and the children we serve, we will burn out faster than anything. It is important to keep our flame light through our love and passion of our work!
#MEMSPAchat#CIUCohort

A1: It is always a point I make in teacher interviews. You must love kids or your content area, but if you don’t have both eventually you’ll become frustrated. #memspachat
A1: @JonGordon11 tells us in The Carpenter to LOVE. SERVE. CARE. You can’t serve your people if you don’t love your people. Love is wanting to see others succeed. #MEMSPAchat
Q2: West Michigan author @BLichtenwalner writes that the 3 LOVES every great leader must have is for the Mission, for the People, and for the Character.

A2: #memspachat I have to be passionate for what we do whether it’s building relationships with Ss and their families, reading, or learning. We must model and embody what we want in our school community and it’s mission.
Q2: West Michigan author @BLichtenwalner writes that the 3 LOVES every great leader must have is for the Mission, for the People, and for the Character.

A2: to truly believe in the mission, all kids being cared for and supported everyday and provided with a world class education to open up every opportunity available to them, don’t show it just with words, with actions, with priorities, with resources #MEMSPAchat
A2: To make things happen (mission), you have to be onboard and to be passionate about making it happen. You have to love the purpose and goal--the destination. #MEMSPAchat
A2: our mission is to care for and educate our young people. Providing our students with a positive environment is often the best thing that has happened to/for them. They are our mission!!
#MEMSPAchat#CIUCohort
A2: Always remaining positive and forward thinking while fostering a collaborative environment - staff, parents, and students all pulling in the same direction! #MEMSPAchat
A2) In your actions and words even when negativity is being shared around you, honoring the absent, and by having LOVE in your mission!!! My last school has LOVE LEAD LEARN as our mission and strategically in that order @AUEEagles@erineaton33@mrswade2014#MEMSPAchat
A2: it's important to walk the walk - be present and positive - and remind your team about how their work and their successes (even small) support your mission - and celebrate that work #MEMSPAchat
A2: Owning it. Living it in all my actions throughout the day. Driving success and relationships through intentional actions and acting with purpose. #MEMSPAchat
A2 - everyone may have a different mission which is great because we can cover all the bases. If we love our individual mission then we won’t stop until that mission is accomplished. If you don’t love it, you’ll eventually neglect it. Stakes are too high for neglect. #MEMSPAchat
A2: The mission guides the day to day work in an organization. As the leader you must live and love the mission and model it for all. All must invest their heart into the mission - the leader drives this expectation #memspachat
A1. You have to have a love for working with kids. It gets you through the though days and helps create lasting memories of the kids who change you for the better. #MEMSPAchat
Q3: West Michigan author @BLichtenwalner writes that the 3 LOVES every great leader must have is for the Mission, for the People, and for the Character.

A2: I think love for the mission stems from the belief that all kids are capable of learning & developing based on their individual strengths. It’s up to us as creative leaders to help them grow those strengths & support their learning mission. #MEMSPAchat
A2: By building relationships! This is the key to moving forward. A team that feels valued and respected will help move towards the mission together! #MEMSPAchat
A2. If you don't believe in the mission from start it will never succeed. Its a hard sell if everyone else know you don't love the idea either. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Our mission for 11 years has evolved around relation building and life skills. I love it by living, breathing and modeling that every day. Ps, Ts and others edus tell me that they feel it as soon as they walk in. So proud! #MEMSPAchat
Q3: I plan ways to show I care and motivate my staff every month. Birthday cards, staff gatherings, or treats in their rooms/mailboxes. The people are the building blocks for our school! #MEMSPAchat
A3: I tell them I love them, everyday! Ss, staff, Ps. End every community meeting with "remember, I love you." Follow words with actions by being present in words, actions, deeds. #MEMSPAchat
Q3: West Michigan author @BLichtenwalner writes that the 3 LOVES every great leader must have is for the Mission, for the People, and for the Character.

A3 - It shows in all we do. Striving to support teachers. Assisting students in their struggles and celebrating their achievements. Positive initiatives that promote positive relationships. Make work fun and let others know they’re appreciated. #MEMSPAchat
A3: building relationships, genuine support, and creating a culture where being positive is the norm; also sharing true appreciations and reminding the team of our why. A little fun helps too! #MEMSPAchat
A3: I think it’s important to tell people how much they mean to you! Don’t assume they know; cards, emails, texts, f2f interactions... you can never over appreciate someone! #MEMSPAchat

A3: I use the word love boldly. I talk about my “philias” love with some of the students who come “visit” me frequently. I want them to know I love them. I want the staff to know I love them. I want to reach their heart so that my words can reach their head. #MEMSPAchat
A3: By treating students as I want my personal children to be treated in school. Treating all people with respect - each job is important in the school family's success. Sharing personal family struggles with parents who are experiencing struggles. BE REAL. 😁#MEMSPAchat
A3 - By being honest, straightforward, and true while still caring, being empathetic, and believing in everyone’s (kids and adults) unlimited potential. #MEMSPAchat
A3: showing love for staff and students is the most important role of a leader and the hardest; listen, show appreciation, provide support, be authentic, be honest #MEMSPAchat
A3: build strong relationships, coach them, affirm them, write affirmation notes and notes of appreciation, show “love”, make them feel appreciated #MEMSPAchat
A3)Greet them everyday by name...know their Love Languages and do those little things that speak to them...a note, a treat, a hug, time, or doing something little for them. #MEMSPAchat@JulieMytych#5LoveLanguages

A3: Relationship building. Taking time to not only know the names of your staff & students but know things about them. Showing compassion & caring, & listening more than we talk. Being a visible, present, & invested in others #MEMSPAchat
A3: Many Ss come to school looking for love. A Tt an Admin that can give that to students and staff will make a difference that will last a lifetime. Not just impact achievement but change the course of lives. #MEMSPAchat
A3: As @Syndee_Sue preaches, it is all the little things. I show love this week by doing A Week of Love. Something special everyday this week for the entire staff #memspachat
Finding different ways to highlight students for all their efforts...most improved, modeling great character, academic performance. Highlight in the building, through letters home, and on social media. Tell the story! #MEMSPAchat
A4: Thinking about how I act, react, engage with the most "unloveable." When I show reach out in love in the most difficult situations is when I show for character. #MEMSPAchat
Q4: West Michigan author @BLichtenwalner writes that the 3 LOVES every great leader must have is for the Mission, for the People, and for the Character.

A3) it’s the little things, your time, listening, really listening, dropping notes, being the Starbucks Fairy, granting wishes, being the sub for the day so our family can be with their family, answering the phones or scooping veggies in the lunchroom, just a few #MEMSPAchat
A4: To me, my version of character is in the context of the six pillars of character. We love and model: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. #MEMSPAchat
A4: Character... that thing we build through our thoughts, feelings, words, and actions. There is no greater love for a leader than committing to be our BEST self. #MEMSPAchat

A1~ we ask our kids to choose love...they need to see us choose love as well. Especially when the tough conversations arise, I tell the student I still love them. They will mess up. But, if we choose love, we can move on. Same with staff. #ChooseLove#MEMSPAchat
A4:Character ❤️ is all about the STORY. We all have one. Learning to embrace another's story while sharing our own, builds the utmost in great character.. #MEMSPAchat
A4: Modeling & demonstrating personal interaction. Embracing failure as opportunities to grow. Consistency in support. Cheering on progress. Encouraging creativity. And always being willing to try something new. #MEMSPAchat
A5: sharing other side of this question...my 1st principal had fun with Ss, wanted the best for Ts and Ss, encouraged and help us excel...present at conferences, author books, move to admin, seek advance degrees...he cared, we knew, we would move mountains for him. #MEMSPAchat
A5: Getting to know people, their goals, likes, and aspirations demonstrates the value you have for them. In addition, working in time for both team building and collaboration is a commitment to close relationships. #MEMSPAchat
A5 - Building close relationships can create a feeling of family and unity. A place where everyone feels safe and connected. From there we find comfort in taking risks because we know it’ll be OK if we make mistakes. That’s a good place to be when you’re learning. #MEMSPAchat

A5 it's a people business. The people/kids we work with need to know we care about them beyond the job and beyond the grade/task. It's much more than that and can be shown in a variety ways. #MEMSPAchat
A5: We made a PLC room at our school where we have a common place to collaborate, learn, and meet in teams. Also created an opportunity in the schedule where 3 teams are in there together & have opportunity for vertical collaboration and support. I work in there too. #memspachat
#MEMSPAchat close relationships can often help build character. There’s a saying: “show me your friends, and I’ll show you you” can often show our character and our personal care for those around us.
A6: Be intentional! Make an effort to be present and supportive!
Add positive into your calendar. This was posted on Twitter and I love it to stay focused! #MEMSPAchat
A5: modeling tribes activities at each staff meeting to support building relationships and connections that teachers can also bring back to their classrooms #MEMSPAchat
A6: #MEMSPAchat Telling and showing people that they are appreciated goes a long way. People like to know that what they do does not go unnoticed. Notes of gratitude and appreciation are a great way to demonstrate this love.
A6: Show your staff you care. Hand written notes are paramount & never go unappreciated. Letting your staff know you value all that they do to love & care for students daily. Knowing students by name & being visible & present every day #MEMSPAchat
A6: I need to ensure that I visit every class each day. It’s a small building, so not an impossible task, need to be more intentional about it. #MEMSPAchat
A6: As a newer member in the building I need to start building relationships with the members of our school community that I don’t know that well yet. It’s going to take time. #MEMSPAchat
A6: planning more activities for staff to look forward to, it’s amazing how an Oreo showdown pumped people up in the lounge! -many messages of gratitude for something simple like that. #MEMSPAchat
A6 - More targeted and specific feedback when I observe positives. Encouraging messages when someone needs a pick-me-up. Random phone calls to parents to let them know their kid ROCKS! Custard-filled donuts for our dedicated educational staff members! #MEMSPAchat
A6: Give more time- professionally and socially to colleagues. Sometimes that 15min impromptu coffee leads to breakthrough with relationships. I also take recess duty when I can as thank you for coaching and PLC work. #MEMSPAchat
Continue to model positive behavior, celebrate small wins and big wins, tell the story!! Intentionally setting aside time to spread the love! #MEMSPAchat
Enjoying seeing the dedication of @NAESP President @Cardwell16 as he multitasks during opening general session of AASA Conference while participating in #MEMSPAchat!
A6: I need to add more connector activities to PD. I tend to want to immediately dig into the important work and learning so I have to be more intentional about planning connector activities to start the session. #memspachat
A7: The people: the dedicated teachers and staff and the amazing students figuring out who they are and all they want to be. It's a new and different day each and every day. What's not to love about that! #MEMSPAchat#MiddleSchoolRocks
A7: Love seeing those I work with excel and break through their own personal barriers. That sense of accomplishment/progress/growth is so fulfilling. #pride#MEMSPAchat
Q7) knowing I can be ME and loving and appreciating the realness, uniqueness, and vulnerability of everyone else around me...staff, students, parents, colleagues @BreneBrown#MEMSPAchat
A7: for me, it’s the relationships I’ve built. Watching a student who has struggled find success, & grow in their learning reminds me everyday why I chose this job. #MEMSPAchat
A7: My staff, my Ss, my team, my community. My drive to push myself, my Ss and my Ts to the next level to continue to help our school go to the next level academically #MEMSPAchat
A6: Show continual appreciation! you can never show your teachers you support and appreciate them enough. Just did an interview with 10 Minute Teacher on this very topic.
https://t.co/VxezPLxJsx#memspachat
A7: Ours is a profession where our daily work affects individual kids and all their possibilities. That’s what brings me joy and satisfaction, especially when you see them years later and the great memories they have of you. #MEMSPAchat
A7 We have the ability to impact lives daily in a positive manner. Desire frustrations, we see some amazing accomplishments and acts of kindness throughout the year. This is what keeps me going. #MEMSPAchat
A7: Our #TraverseHeights school community (students, staff, families, friends) keeps me going. With all of our successes, silly quirks, the ups and downs, and stories you can't make up... it's an easy group to fall in love with. #MEMSPAchat
A7: I love being a leader and making systematic differences in the school that make an impact on learning. And bring s whole team with me to make a difference together! ❤️❤️❤️❤️#memspachat
A7: I sure do love my kids 💓 and I love the people who love them. It doesn't hurt that I have piles of sweet messages and handmade cards and drawings to remind me 💓 #MEMSPAchat
Q8: CHALLENGE QUESTION: Tag at least one other person in response to this question, partner with them within the next week, and give an example on how you both will show that you value, appreciate, & LOVE your staff or colleagues. #MEMSPAchat
Q8: CHALLENGE QUESTION: Tag at least one other person in response to this question, partner with them within the next week, and give an example on how you both will show that you value, appreciate, & LOVE your staff or colleagues. #MEMSPAchat
A7: #MEMSPAchat The people and students with whom I work makes me love my job every day. Often, it is the smile or appreciation of one of my students that can make the difference in my day. Knowing that I’m making a difference is my motivation!
Once again, thank you sooo much to my wife for understanding the importance of #MEMSPAchat especially on this Valentine's Day edition.
Connections for LOVE are everywhere!
A7: Knowing the positive impact that I’ve had on families and students. I shared my health journey this week so they understand my upcoming extended leave. The and responses have melted my heart. #MEMSPAchat

Thankfully, my spouse is equally supportive. I told him I wasn't going to chat tonight and he encouraged me to get on. He knows how important this is to me! #MEMSPAchat
A8: @scottpanozzo, we added tomorrow as a student day (due to SO MANY snow days) and my support staff were planning a day off. Because the ALL want to report, I'm treating our team to a cinnamon roll breakfast! #MEMSPAchat
A7) @memspa peeps!!! Totally inspired by all the AMAZING leaders in this state!!! Shore to shore and border to border!!! And of course The INCREDIBLE team at headquarters in Mason along with our MAC and MiASCD neighbors ❤️#somuchfun#MEMSPAchat
A5 I know all of our teachers by their first name. I connect with most of our staff one-o-one during the year to hear concerns, what we could do different or what are they proud of. This gives staff a window to influence decisions from Central Office. #MEMSPAchat
