That title, for us, is the definition of innovation in education.
Hey Ken! Yes. And, I might say that incremental is actually the best way to innovate. Change is hard!
A1: Classroom design; blended learning opportunities.
and doing something better, maybe more authentically
A1 - I think it's also always finding a reason to say "yes." Too often people find reasons to say "no."

A1: Innovation, in education, is about creating new ideas, methods, structures and processes.
. Right: New and different isn't enough.
I agree. The best achievements can come from the innovators rather than the inventors.
I think so. If we want people to think differently, why not start with what exists, rather than pulling from ether?
A1 Innovation in Ed = using tools & resources to create dynamic, engaging & effective learning environments that meet all learners
Connected Educators are driven by building a culture of innovation. Ed tech is one part.
Risk taking! advancing the bar higher and higher!
Morning Tony! Just reminded me I need to order your new book!
Hey Eric! Good morning. :)
Agree, being creative in the way we differentiate to reach every type of learner.
Excellent point worth repeating. Using "tech" doesn't equate with "being different" or "better". https://t.co/OwBjHNONwr
Innovation is NOT digitizing your worksheets, but rather having kids doing the learning... exploring ...
A1 Being innovative means never settling. Always looking for a better way.
A1 Innovation at the basic level is change, but in education it has to purposeful and effective change to meet the needs of S's
A1 innovation is when you go “in” to the mind to question..create..fail..regenerate.never ending process
A1- Innovation is about removing barriers & giving people access to resources that can make things better!
I feel like I have been in the middle of transformation my entire career. Good feeling https://t.co/9tM1DEYfnX
We are in the middle of a transformation...the process has begun
A1 I would say educators that observe others to learn new methods, make associations to that knowledge & experiment =innovative
A1: Not settling for mediocrity but challenging where we are and committing ourselves to find a path to grow further.
Good morning , A1: I think innovation is just seeing things of substance in a new light; to be used in education, the classroom

I agree. We can't just tinker around the edges. We need structural changes. https://t.co/ASjVOk2a56
A1: Innovation, in education, is about creating new ideas, methods, structures and processes.
To innovate is to think differently
A1 innovation is new ideas or evolving existing ideas for improvement and to meet needs
Yes too often the focus is on change for change sake, not actually meeting needs (or wants) of Ss or Ts
Innovation - Always looking for that new tool to put in your instructional toolbox.
Innovation is purposeful change; not just change for its own sake
A1 Innovation involves risk and failure. We have to get comfortable with that F word. 🤓 And what we do to turn it into success!
The "problem-finding" is so important! Can we really call it if it's not meeting a need?
A1 says innovation happens at the intersection play, passion & purpose. I've been to that part of town. It rocks!

A1 Started reading "Inside Out".. talks about end-to-end creativity (imagine 2 entrepreneurship).. https://t.co/AdTWpXfuwJ
A1: Innovation in EDU is the ability to take apart what you are doing and put it back together to and Ss
A1: innovation also means giving teachers the freedom to take risks and fail
How strange (sad) is it that in the 21st century having a student center culture is considered innovative?
A1 Innovation is not change for change sake. It is opening one's mind to ponder on new approaches that will meet children's needs
And acknowledging that "failure" is part of the learning process to more learning!

A2 Safe, engaging, thought provoking and fun, growing the 21st century mind with a pioneer’s spirit.
A1: it is about a tangible change in the way things are done that is new at one of many different levels with a +ve impact.
So I suppose a learning experience designer is someone who helps make learning cool..
Innovation isn't only about what you do, it's also about why & how you do it. It's about a mindset. Cc:
A2: Current innov classroom is productively busy w collab, S centered/led learning w classroom environ & community united in learn
Brian, HS principal from Mass., joining in progress.
Love me some rule benders and stretchers. Put them on my team, anytime.
Agree! Whole-heartedly! We tend to throw the baby out with the bath water.
We are quite the personalities aren't we? LOL
Well said. We can't encourage innovation if we strike down bold ideas and suggestions. https://t.co/aluMnmxWxM
A1 The starting point must be openness to new ideas instead of fear.
Nailed it! Teaching elem Ss, my biggest challenge is getting them to engage the world around them.
https://t.co/FmKk3pn3aw
The "problem-finding" is so important! Can we really call it if it's not meeting a need?
A1 = Innovation in Education means thinking and doing differently
The two need to go together.
A1: Innovative Education is being absolutely comfortable with making mistakes and learning from them.
Jinx! I said something so similar!
Absolutely. Risk-taking isn't really risk-taking to an innovator. It's just part of the process.
A2 - love to hear the student answer to this question
A2 Everyone is not doing same thing at same time in same way. Tchr included.
A2: Student centered, T as Facilitator, Places where S's can create, Flexble seating, true community of learners.
easy to want to repackage, but the kids know it is the same thing ... like mixing bad tasting medicine with juice
Absolutely. Plus, it is often easier to see value of innovation when we can easily compare "before" to "after."
A1: Innovation is not just tweaking things. It is about shifting paradigms and practices. It's transformative. It's revolutionary.
awesome stuff! Glad you are on board.
A1- Innovation in Education is showing Ss that you are a learner too. Be the model. Try something different - new or old.

QUESTION 2
Let's keep it going!!! Chat is awesome this AM.
https://t.co/uvIhRVASvg
Q2: Describe the chartacteristics and environment of an innovative classroom.
A2: Ingredients for the innovative classroom: Teacher, Students, desire to learn.
A1: And I thought I had a grasp of what is... Such great info here this morning!!
An innovative classroom/school is one that makes the shift from a culture of teaching to a culture of learning!
a2 engagement -- it doesn't have to be pretty, it can be messy & might have symptoms of organized chaos, my favorite!
A2 Risk-taking, inquisitive, questioning, collaborative, open to change... and always ready to ask "What if we try..."
. Not being afraid to have fun is actually pretty important in the innovation sphere. Also required: optimism!
A2: Ss do most of the talking, it is an extremely active classroom (movement, talking, laughing, etc.)
A2 - Students working together, learning from each other and working on getting better everyday!!!
A2: An innovative classroom: collaboration, movement, sometimes messy, empathetic, inquiry, critical thinking, open to new and risk
Be the change! Sometimes you're an island for awhile and then that one person joins you.
A1: Game changers stretch the playing field. They operate without boundaries. Let's be game changers. Who's with me?
student choice and voice, tech where it enhances learning (not for tech sake) https://t.co/zIKgnQRn6S
Q2: Describe the chartacteristics and environment of an innovative classroom.
you're right! Innovation is about learning, not teaching.
So, being a "change agent" has to mean that you aren't just focused on "change" but also "purpose."
A2 Ss are not afraid to take risks. Not everyone doing the same thing in the same way
Short answer: and (best two books on innovation and effective teaching I've read yet).
A2 It is a thoughtful environment, with questions, investigations, and is passion filled. It takes learning outside the classroom
A2: Innovation looks like Ss and Ts being free to experiment, fail, learn w/o being bogged down by tons of rules/ regs
A1 innovation is when you can’t walk by that classroom without saying “I want to do that in my class!!”
A1: For innovation to be effective, it needs to be tried, tested, retested & given time to become an integral part of the learning
A2: a continuous quest for better
A1: The innovative classroom is loaded with risk taking by the Ts and Ss.
I think so, right? There are so few totally novel ideas out there. And yet, lots to improve on. . .
that's a very diplomatic way to say "crazy!" 😜😘
Yes! The WHY is so important. Don't such say you are innovating for the sake of it- have a true purpose. https://t.co/n04wJQyDui
Innovation isn't only about what you do, it's also about why & how you do it. It's about a mindset. Cc:
A1 - this isn't just technology, it's just finding new ways to engage and meet the needs of students
A2. Student-Centered, multiple pathways to learning and constant growth from T/Ss.
A2 freedom, chaos style learning, creation personal to students that was a gimme ?
A2 - Busy, noisy, student led, maybe messy, trials, errors, questioning, "aha's!!!"
A1: Hypothesizing &testing a new (to u) methodology, tool, framework, service, etc provides a valuable outcome 4 teaching&learning
I would also add and work by https://t.co/iYryrbFCr2
Short answer: and (best two books on innovation and effective teaching I've read yet).

https://t.co/8uvHtqmgP6
Q2: Describe the chartacteristics and environment of an innovative classroom.
A2 - PLANNING is everything in an innovative classroom.
Nice ! Model how to be a life-long learner ! https://t.co/GWegokCWfN
A1- Innovation in Education is showing Ss that you are a learner too. Be the model. Try something different - new or old.
Which means the school environment has to encourage risk taking. Many don't.
2A)....where trust and relationships have been established as a framework first, beyond that anything is possible
A2: organized chaos, safe, challenging
A2 Innovative classroom is Safe, engaging, thought provoking and fun, growing the 21st century mind with a pioneer’s spirit.

A2: Looks and sounds the opposite of traditional sit and get method of my childhood experience.
Tru dat ! https://t.co/QUT7WFQBlc
A1 innovation is when you can’t walk by that classroom without saying “I want to do that in my class!!”
A2 having a culture that is secure w/failure, open to feeling uncomfortable as we try new ideas/techniques, foster risk taking
There's a student ?? Amazing!
There's a student ?? Amazing!
A2: My mantra "What is the worst thing that can happen?" that often brings about the BEST things that happen!
A2 Flexible seating! Student voice! It's the room people say "What's going on in there?" Self-promoting.
A2: The classroom evolves and is constantly changing and adapting to the Ss and their needs. T is a facilitator of S learning.

A2 S's following passions to develop and adjust ideas, conversation, working in various groups and styles
A2 - A place where not only academic needs, but social emotional needs are being met.
A2 - I often wonder if every classroom, everyday can be innovative. Or is it more important that the system is innovative
"Chaos style learning" like that! My new motto!
A2 Depends. Where on the continuum (imagine. create. innovate. entrepreneur) the occupants of the learning space find themselves..
When thinking about is giving free reign by system leader to do then innovation can truly be embraced with open arms
A2 ... it is not necessarily physical characteristics ... it is a vibe, an attitude, that makes an innovative classroom innovative

Leaders can support innovation in schools by modeling. Model putting learning, relationships & thinking at the center of schools!
A3 Focus on your WHY, Ask questions, Embrace new opportunities & new learning, Collaborate with others, Reflect on Learning, Repeat
A4 Allow Teachers to have a Green Light and be supportive.
A3: An innovative educator knows how to improvise. Maybe the initial plan isn't cutting it. Planning isn't everything.
they are on level 42 next to the Orange Julius
A3: this Q looks at innovation thru a particular lens (of skills/ abilities). Perhaps we need adaptive, flexible options too?
innovators are never satisfied ... even in success they are always trying to improve
A4 Doing two [seemingly] diametrically opposed things..
1. Getting out of the T's way
2. Being in front of the T defending(?)
. Let's not get crazy. The process can take care of itself! ;) People...
A4: Get in there and fail with the rest of us and then get up, dust off and try again!
A black guy executes 5 white cops and shoot 7 more and I'm supposed to give a shit about ?
A4: model innovation as a leader: do things differently - flip staff meetings, acknowledge innovation in classes.Set the culture
Love the idea of "boundary busting." That's perfect.
A4: Encourage risk-taking and support (even applaud) failure as part of the innovative process.
A4: admins support Ts with by behavior & practices in all that they do
Great suggestion! I agree!
Just FYI PLN - this convo is going so fast I'm on 2nd cup of coffee!!!!
Too often innovation is focused on the new and novel...when it should squarely be focused on value and impact.
A3 An innovative educator must know and be able to communicate "WHY" they innovate. This must be clear to keep them grounded!
Love your wording "admiring problems." That's taking the easy road. https://t.co/3guQJVrp7l
Yes! Love this! Stop admiring problems and explore solutions instead! https://t.co/9O7yQJFuLQ
An innovative classroom/school is driven by solutions; not stuck in problems.
Yes. Let your Ss design & hold the map. https://t.co/SDxdER8T3I
A3. I would also say that "true" innovators have to be willing to adjust practice w/o knowing end results. Very important.
Love this! https://t.co/spzN7Dpzge
A3: A truly educator identifies anything that impedes learning and finds ways to get rid of or around those obstacles.
A4: allowing Ts the freedom to try out new instructional practices and support their efforts
:) Jumping in from far north-create collaborative cultures of learning-opps for experimentation/reflection & renewal
A4: Admin can support innovation by giving Ts room to try new things and Ss space to apply real world skills
A4: Being supportive and open to new ideas, modeling risk taking- walking the walk and talking the talk!
Ok, I actually thought it was near Spencer's https://t.co/2FSxVAAe2f
they are on level 42 next to the Orange Julius
A3) awareness that something exists...feeling, experiencing, or noticing something (such as a sound, sensation, feeling or emotion)
Q4: Admin must support Ts by allowing them more autonomy and trusting them to break down barriers!
sometimes improvement is retro -- I'm an old dog with a few new tricks
A4:by encouraging & expecting risk taking, providing time and encouraging Ts to collaborate, modeling innovation in their work too.
Leaders must model what they want to see in their school. https://t.co/tu4uvDAUPx
A4 Admin must be willing to learn alongside educator’s act more as a collaborator and less as a boss. Lead by example.
On point with the innovative https://t.co/xSCiTWSvmT
bell rings and kids ask for a few more minutes ... can I skip next class ... you may be doing something innovative
Exactly! Innovative Ts take the risk, share that risk w/ Ss & other Ts, and if it fails - they innovate by adjusting
A4 In my experience as a parent (last kid graduated 12th in '15) a lot of Ts aren't innovative. School looks like it did in 1969..+
A3 being curious, flexible & risk taker in their own learning sets the tone for Ss to be innovative & creative
A4 Admin can lead by example. Allow teachers to explore their passions. Then, support of innovative learning that is taking place
A4: Admin can support innov by celebrating it, sharing it, & supporting it to develop culture of innovation
So true. We cannot legislate into our schools.
A4: Stop saying no... give the Ts freedom to do what the Ss need. Admin also needs to be willing to take risks
A4: be willing to let T take risks and have their back
This is so true!! The best learning opportunities are not always planned!
Like the green light analogy!
A4. Let those with the idea set the destination, and work to help them chart the safest course.
Agreed. I think planning should only be guidelines bc indulging Ss' unique responses is a give & take. https://t.co/KBEWgBfVdR
Yes. There is the importance of planning, certainly, and safety in "knowing." But, innovation doesn't follow a set path.
Leaders create the environment, be vulnerable, open a path, set outcomes, allow for autonomy.
A4 - Programs like this one help teachers be more comfortable with innovation in the classroom. https://t.co/bvUeG9WtmL
A4: Leaders can support, model, challenge and create a culture/environment for risk-taking.
An innovative classroom is one without walls.
Spener's is across the corridor
It is great to see! Everyone who wants learn! https://t.co/QPNrgpVxTr
Who would think on a Sat morning in July that you cannot keep up with
Admin have to be ok with it not going perfect. Ts find out where they stand, not when it's perfect but when it fails
Also, many turnaround schools require UDL, etc., and provide training in it but then restrict copies, books, no wifi.
Realtime data collected via forms
Use it for visitor log, student sign in, apts, bus log!
(sort responses backwards)
I haven't even got up to go downstairs to turn on the coffee https://t.co/Ji7C9p5UIF
Just FYI PLN - this convo is going so fast I'm on 2nd cup of coffee!!!!
A4: Biggest way admin can show support is to visit the classroom. Come in and learn with us!
A4 I wonder sometimes if that's because there wasn't an admin not bothering a T with rules or covering them from naysayers?
yes ..back to the future..
back..future..back…future
An innovator is one who truly disrupts current practices and goes beyond blended learning to reconstruct what education should be
Admins lead by modeling! Set the tone, support, ask "how can I help"
Modelling for students and others is my go to example of how we can move forward together
It's always rocking when is in the building. Good to see you always!
A4.2: Admins - lead the & - Ts will be excited and --> ➕ impact on Ss
As a Sith Lord, I have to know these minute details
A back and forth between teachers and kids can't be planned so improvising based on their ideas is key. https://t.co/943g7J17Ms
This is so true!! The best learning opportunities are not always planned!
When they say teachers only teach 9 months of the year...
A4 - Admin supports innovation by getting out of the way ... helping to removing the "red tape" ... asking "what do you need"
Yes. And with support like this coming from the top, Ts can and will do this!
A4:Admin must model innovation too! Walk the walk in order to talk the talk!
. Outside of education, the great innovators are those who constantly monitor progress and adjust accordingly. Eagerly.
Love this! I always forget the reflection piece and it is so important for both teachers and students! https://t.co/vmjTCGABtK
A3 Focus on your WHY, Ask questions, Embrace new opportunities & new learning, Collaborate with others, Reflect on Learning, Repeat
A4. Part of this is knowing that being a leader doesn't mean your way is the only way. Lead through lenses, and not just your own.
a4 my P in spot obs docked me points because I left the projector running too long. Really.
Create a culture where Admin pop ins is a good thing, not something to fear
A3: An innovative educator engages Ss in a back and forth discussion that is improvised and can't be planned.
A4: Admin can lead by example with the same mindset. Allow T's the flexibility to be innovative, guide them w/PD options.
A4 Participate- get involved and promote!
A4. It's a hard process. Something I have to remind myself daily. But, it actually cultivates distributive leadership. . .
. You can be sure that "Stop admiring problems" will be heard often in my rm & school this year.
LOVE IT!
A4:Ad. need to be able to trust their Ts and allow them 2 b risk takers, mistakes will happen but allowing them to learn and grow
Eg. I'm not good at math .... Yet. A single word addition that changes the nature of the statement.
A4 A's encourage innovation by giving T's and S's permission to try, and not penalizing failure.
Leaders can make innovation the norm by eliminating judgement when engaging with Ts & Ss.
A4 Be visible! Let Ts keep their autonomy. Celebrate Ts having a voice.
A4:Support innovative teaching w/innovative& supportive leadership. Give Ts choice&voice & 2 unstandardize. https://t.co/7zU0QFmMYe
A4. . . a necessity for leaders who want to do more great things with often less resources.
Yes! , TY for being a principal who supports innovative learning! https://t.co/Jtil6mxGBW
A4 Admin can lead by example. Allow teachers to explore their passions. Then, support of innovative learning that is taking place
A4: Give Ts choice and voice. Trust trust and empower them to make choices in best interest of Ss.
A4 - The system should be about innovation - not the people
That's awesome. Admin offices need to be encouraging of that and not just stuck in operations. https://t.co/hFkefgWzXD
A4: Biggest way admin can show support is to visit the classroom. Come in and learn with us!
A4: Admin must encourage risk taking, & not criticize if it fails. More importantly they must give Ts time to create & collaborate
A4: Trust your teachers, give them space and resources to innovate, support them, and get involved !
bravery yes! It's not easy going against the grain!
A4: Administrators support innovation by being innovative themselves. It's valued and appreciated by the faculty.
I am so glad that Cat Stevens is enjoying this chat
Sad times! I agree, especially in the secondary classroom. Ts treat them like college Ss and forget they are still kids!
A4: support me, challenge me, give me opportunities to collaborate w/others in a meaningful way
A4: frequent pop ins to Cs to get a feel for what it's really like. Then Ts feel ok when a lesson bombs. Spoken from experience.
But also willing to try something even if others don't understand or are not there yet.
A4: Admin should model innovation change the format of faculty mtgs/PD/newsletters. Transfers into the classroom. Celebrate risks!
Admin can celebrate the good, but if that is why you do than you are doing it wrong ... it is about the kids .. are they excited?
A4: Create culture of innovation that allows opportunities 4 all Ss& Ts who choose to, to flourish and to be catalysts for change
we don't have to discount novelty, but some Ts have a hard time seeing the difference between novelty & quality
A4 Leadership can facilitate innovation by modeling these qualities in the building. It'll trickle down to the Ts and Ss
Unfortunately I still see it in some classrooms today. Ss still sitting in rows, tchr at front of room using a whiteboard.
Agree We just can't tell Ss "go innovate." It's a skill that has to be taught, practiced and continuously supported
. Great education is jazz. The moment of surprise engulfs players on the bandstand & the audience. https://t.co/XwR0vcZ1e7
A4 - Give them space and support. Look at the data together to make sure we are heading in the right direction. GET OUT THE WAY!
Or help them design the map. Learning is always more meaningful when we do it together!
A4) Say YES to new ideas! Provide coaching and support, Offer innovative PD, share relevant resources. https://t.co/R9FNcfHnUe
Tough Q here:
Q4: How can administration support innovation in education so it can occur in classroom? https://t.co/s8bKqqvNYn
Exactly what I as going to say! https://t.co/hfzRqqNMkt
A4 A's encourage innovation by giving T's and S's permission to try, and not penalizing failure.
So important! I want a leader who supports and demonstrates this in their practices https://t.co/OCtwEBI7Xg
A4:Admin must model innovation too! Walk the walk in order to talk the talk!
Sorry to duck out 1/2 way Have a great Saturday!
right, and know it’ll be messy!
Teachers MUST be intelligent mediums of ACTION!!
~ Written over 120 years ago by John Dewey.
https://t.co/kn0q5o8w7W
Exactly. I feel like a lot of admin is stuck in the past systems and is scared of opening them up. https://t.co/JZgpp9Vpq7
A4: Admin can support innov by celebrating it, sharing it, & supporting it to develop culture of innovation
We need to be fearless...to know that sometimes we (Ts & Ss) may fail, but keep trying new ideas.
A4 Admins must be reading, growing, and collaborating to support & encourage Ts. How else will they know what questions to ask?
A4 adults who are mindful of others ideas encourage free wheeling thinking that keeps all kids at center of enriched learning
A4: Have our backs. Innovative Ts sometimes rub parents and students the wrong way. Help us get what we need, too.
A3: I think all you need to innovate as a T is the desire to try.
A4: admins show support by giving Ts autonomy and modeling innov
It's the burden of leadership in the Empire to have to know everything about everything. https://t.co/bOFPXgouhB
As a Sith Lord, I have to know these minute details
Great minds think alike. Best practice wins.
A4: Admin who support innovation helps T's destroy CANT's and replace them with CAN's.
A4: If you're an admin here at you are showing your support loud and clear!
Hard for them to have time to meet all the needs even if I agree
mhm.. thing is tho colleges are changing, too. It's easy to plow a rut doing the same thing. Follow ?
Think: divergent then convergent, design as a process, engage an exponential mindset, be action-oriented, empathy determines value
A4: best thing my Director "what do you need from me? how can I help? her support goes a long way
A4: An observation from outside your system.... You talk of your 'admin' as something like us vs them... Is that how it is?
A4-admin 2 Ts biggest supporters/cheerleaders;like T to S;admin need 2 encourages risk;process failures & supports problem solving
A4:Admin support innovative classrms by providing resources, articulating the vision, + PR, leaving Ts alone- let them run w/ it
Agreed! We are always looking for new & different ways to innovate ! https://t.co/fkFNKVXslh
innovators are never satisfied ... even in success they are always trying to improve
Love that! "Best practice wins!"
A4: Focus on leadership not compliance.
A4: Innovative Admin that walks the walk, & invites Ts to walk along side them get the innovative juices flowing, and ideas abound
I still need more on this. I previously thought an improvement could be an innovation. Are you saying that is not so?
It is so important that teachers know that we trust them!
A4- The Admin should be part of the innovation to create a sustainable model.
So good. Yes! https://t.co/wEOkXL2gjT
A4: Trust your teachers, give them space and resources to innovate, support them, and get involved !
A4. Allow your Ts, like your Ss, to make mistakes and have fail-moments. We are all in school to learn...just diff content.
External measures of completion & performance in education hamper teaching & innovation.
. Admins need to take the side of innovators, even when school boards or parents get nervous or angry.
Leading by example! https://t.co/IPdMXi3X8p
A4: If you're an admin here at you are showing your support loud and clear!
a4 my P gave - points on spot buzz projector on Comment by P .bulb=$. What does that have to do w helping me craft my work
Exactly How many times do we hear "Real learning is messy"? But how many times do we actually see that messy learning?
A4 Be a learner! Support, Empower, Celebrate, Share
Hard but not impossible...trust enoiugh to delegate.
saying "yes" and being willing to learn with Ts is so important!
Q5: Describe the challenges educators face as they attempt to be innovative.
Admin need to do more than just be at a Twitter chat.
A4: Focus on leadership instead of management. Management controls, leadership empowers, supports, innovates.
A4: Empower Ts and Ss to take risks and become agents of change!
And that is okay, right? Sometimes easier to include a few new tricks than a bunch?
Well said. Need to try and visit some classes every day. Be visible! https://t.co/4P1pYaP7QL
A4: Biggest way admin can show support is to visit the classroom. Come in and learn with us!
I have worked for a few admin. like this who support and grow and encourage https://t.co/X8Au6Y6Xg6
A4: Admin must encourage risk taking, & not criticize if it fails. More importantly they must give Ts time to create & collaborate
it can also be discouraging when you try to compare your space to a space with more money to spend.
love when they not just visit but jump in and participate.
I agree that admins can and should be involved in the education progress to have a cohesive structure. https://t.co/SaRZqADsxv
A4 Admins must be reading, growing, and collaborating to support & encourage Ts. How else will they know what questions to ask?
That's horrible. Should not be the case today with all the solid research on best practices!
That's what it should be... but to often the Admin popping in is a "gotcha" tactic
Remaining questions are: Why innovate? Why not do what is known to work? Is new or different better? How do we know?
A5: a challenge just to try something new, sometimes doing it alone at first since others are not ready to take that leap,
. Build the bandstand and let the player riff!
In my experience, this is crucial for the principal. https://t.co/YNAVT21QGx
A4: model innovation as a leader: do things differently - flip staff meetings, acknowledge innovation in classes.Set the culture
A4 It's both ways - Ts have to participate, Principals/Admin have to integrate them in decision-making! https://t.co/KV2UCoeiyl
A4 Participate- get involved and promote!
many exciting ways to create a stimulating educational experience for your Ss. Our passion is global collab.
Yep! Many Ts don't have a clear concept of what innovate means. They have to see it.
Admin must be willing to allow Ts to demonstrate their professional practice w/o fear of failure. But as admin we must support them
in my personal case, just back me up -- don't value student complaints over T planning until Admin investigates.
A4: To foster & an innovative environment, admin must avoid the trap of only providing outcome/data based feedback.
It's amazing what can happen when we shift our mindset to being a learner.
You're lucky to have worked for a 'few'. Too many Ts never get that chance.
Because innovation isn't an end result right, it is a process.
Let's be honest here... it's tough!
https://t.co/ejXsetizFk
Q5: Describe the challenges educators face as they attempt to be innovative.
A4: Admins need to be informed and a part of actual education, not just stuck behind the scenes in operations. That's not cohesive.
the Ss are confident in there innovations why shouldn’t we be https://t.co/UFLj5FNEMG
. Admins need to take the side of innovators, even when school boards or parents get nervous or angry.
The nature of łearning/access to resources and information has changed dramatically. Education, as an institution, must change too.
This. We need to shout this from the rooftops! https://t.co/Mxa8SMeOKi
A4: To foster & an innovative environment, admin must avoid the trap of only providing outcome/data based feedback.
A4: Admin who support innovation are master chefs who stir up the ingredients of greatness inside of their innovative teachers.
There's a growing divide between and . A productive dialogue has to happen to resolve this dire issue.
Sure! We have to facilitate and guide the process--at least initially!
Yes! https://t.co/D2MPG47Aja
A4: Trust your teachers, give them space and resources to innovate, support them, and get involved !
A4: innovative admin allows Ts to set their own PD, encourages Ss and Ts to reach beyond the classroom.
a4 admins need give feedback that matters and make it about the craft
. Right. Don't talk about the mess: Make it. And don't clean it up, even if it makes some people anxious.
A great way to model during staff meetings and PD!
Right. and Ts need time to collaborate and create to make that process work. How do we find more time.
A4: Establishing a culture where Ts know that admin trust them to make informed decisions about what their students need most.
Interesting perspective! 👍🏻
A4: Admins need to embrace innovation themselves instead of being afraid of change to the system. Admins can't be afraid to learn.
I think these skills have always been needed but many were just implied.
A4: When Admin shows support and encouragement to their Ts - freedom to expand thinking and processes takes over
A4 At an in Tucson I met & learned about non-traditional students. The space was *amazing*.
A5: Educators face the challenge of explaining their thought process and sharing the purpose for their innovative practices
A5: Culture in education & school can be a major challenge to educators attempting to be innovative
Challenges = not everyone may agree with being innovative.
im with you! Lets do this!
Yes, "out of the box" thinking. Always finding ways to improve or approach something. https://t.co/wmRuGMXEJB
Agreed! We are always looking for new & different ways to innovate ! https://t.co/fkFNKVXslh
innovators are never satisfied ... even in success they are always trying to improve
"I heard you are a ; nice to meet you - I am the coach" ~LC
Absolutely. But being here shows Ts that they are on board &willing to seek out others who are passionate. https://t.co/YbSADcdV6O
Admin need to do more than just be at a Twitter chat.
...adding just enough spice as they cook!
A5: Challenges: torn w/ "fitting everything in", sharing the class w/S's instead of directing it. Creating a student driven class.
A4 School administrators can celebrate innovation & encourage others. Also: MODEL-MODEL-MODEL risk-taking.
Very important and great point
A4: admin should help unpack for traditionally minded the importance of risktaking+process over product.
So many exciting ways to create a stimulating educational experience for your Ss. Our passion is global collab.
Share the Mess! Let it be visible!
I keep trying to help my Ts feel comfortable with Twitter. Best PD I can give them to help jumpstart their own F2F PD
A4 creative leaders understand power of social learning communities, maker work, informal learning as paths 2 inquiry & innovation
Q5: One barrier is not having a vision of what's possible, educators often isolated & haven't had opps to learn outside their silo
A5: biggest challenge is pushback
And trust that TS are getting it, and meeting Ss where they are, giving them what they need
You just described my desk! I guess I'm always learning.
Hi,all. Jumping in late. Maryann from PA.
A4(2) Principal & teachers need to celebrate successes as often as possible !
A4: I wish each admin office was a mini innovation hub where ideas flourish and are tried and implemented. That's not the case yet.
I hear you. The amount of meeting we had to patch that hole at the top and it never got done
He is actually the one that embraced instead of fear innovation and made so many better for it https://t.co/9qgDiA94JU
You're lucky to have worked for a 'few'. Too many Ts never get that chance.
Challenges are also fear of unknown and global learning. We don't have Skype or google hangout. :(
A4: encourage risk-taking! We have to support and champion the teachers willing to try new approaches to teaching & learning.
A4 I feel if admin were apart of the planning process innovation would be easier to do. Everyone must grow & learn together
RIGHT??! Don't just come in looking 4 what a T is doing wrong
Great point! We don't want cookie cutter that breeds from compliance. https://t.co/STghjonF5z
A4: Focus on leadership not compliance.
A5 Time, overcoming the stigma of negativity, weeding through ineffective strategies. Getting past the traditional “grades”
We have to become better students of creativity and innovation...take on a beginner, not an expert mindset.
Been awhile since I've joined in . Today felt like a good day to pop in. Melissa from 4tb/5th T of accelerated Ss.
A5 Keeping children engaged, keeping it fun
A5:Compliance mindset is regressive. Change mindset 2leadership & creating opps through purposeful action. https://t.co/h3AJiQ38LE
I think these skills have always been needed but many were just implied.
A5b: and going out on a limb outside your comfort zone, often without support
Trust is key and unfortunately not seen or encouraged enough in old fashioned systems. https://t.co/P3SZTP4S4h
A4: Establishing a culture where Ts know that admin trust them to make informed decisions about what their students need most.
A5 Giving up control can be hard for Ts. We want to help solve problems. It isn't easy to watch ideas fail b4 success happens
Even a quick pop in just to say hello and get quick snap shot of class helps a great deal. https://t.co/QOTDqGLiMk
Hard for them to have time to meet all the needs even if I agree
. YEAH! Some me the administration who can look at a mess and cheer, and I'll show you an innovative school!
Sounds like you should be working in VT https://t.co/xr9BVi5MPB
A4: I wish each admin office was a mini innovation hub where ideas flourish and are tried and implemented. That's not the case yet.
y should admins be afraid of innovation. what is best for our Ss. We all want what will work w Ss in this techno World
A5 The biggie is losing the ability to dream big. Then, having roused oneself from slumber taking the idea out for a spin.
A5: so often the immediate gets in the way of the important
Strong innovative administrators are constantly keeping 1 eye on the outside world rather than 2 eyes constantly focused within
I need to add that to my list. It's getting long!
A5: Hostile Admins, standardized testing, time, eval systems that stifle creativity, fear
Admin's need to realized the expertise in their own buildings, they might not always have the answers.
A5 lack of trust from colleagues and admin, but more importantly not trusting yourself to step outside of the box
. It's settled, . Mess is innovation is education. Our work is done.
A5: The system of "Grading" can be a barrier to innovation. It changes the goal of school from "Learning" to "Competition".
A5: The calendar, the school day, the contract, stodgy administrators, doubtful parents, resistant colleagues--just some challenges
A5. Biggest is often our own inaction. We get too caught up in fires and the purely technical changes!
I've experienced this. It's hard to change culture but when innovation is discouraged, everyone dies a bit. https://t.co/tcKGDlSw7I
A5: Culture in education & school can be a major challenge to educators attempting to be innovative
what you are seeing is that canvas is 12' X 16'
Admins can recognize and foster new ground-up leadership that emerges in the innovation process

Ozobots? I want to do this w/mine too.
What I've seen is a lack of understanding, unwillingness to learn, impedes and diminishes our ability to grow forward in this area.
True. Admin can't be so bent on efficiency that they're afraid to take risks and encourage others to do so. https://t.co/wh7hUeNBdD
A4: Admin must encourage risk taking, & not criticize if it fails. More importantly they must give Ts time to create & collaborate
A5: The only 'real' challenge is overcoming fear of trying something new. It's not about Admin, or no money or no tech, etc.
A5: Losing sight of the why
How do I insert the little box with the previous tweet, like you did?
What's the deal with ? Could somebody fill me in, because I'd like to know!
Creating a global classroom is now at your fingertips w today's tech. It's the new normal for Ss.
A5: innovation is hard work, time consuming & prone to fail. Ts need supportive community to hold them up & push them.
Why do people at value innovation and fun so much more than other educators? We have to change this.
A5 Eds who innovate can be challenged by colleagues as to why. Also, difficult when admin don't get it + aren't supportive
A5: My biggest challenge is shifting Ss thinking away from grades and willing to take risks & B creative
A5. Many potential obstacles: People, culture, timing. But, there will always be challenging, and category we can control is us!
A5 I learned in the Navy that one can overcome a lot by nailing two things together that have never been nailed together before
A5: The two greatest challenges to innovation are FEAR and EGO.
Learn to let go of them and innovation is easy.
A5 mass standardization of schools that reeks of 20th c factory procedures and Soviet-style 10 year plans
sorry to hear that...is that a district thing? I set up a class GMail Account and was able to overcome somewhat.
we must focus more on the process and less on the product.
I agree with every but leave teacher alone! I want my admin as a partner and a teammate.
Late again! Nicole from MO. Can't seem to get up before 7:00 CT. Great answers freon what I have seen so far!
A5: Focus on your needs assessment. Where is change and growth most needed and commit to making that a priority.
Yea. I was in educational admin in but quit to do full time because a) it was time and b) I was stifled.
A4 As a T we need admin 2 support, 2 listen 2 ideas & be willing 2 let us try! They will see results. I have that.
Right. Always have to "plan" for what we didn't plan for. :)
A5:Compliance is alluring becus it looks like Eds r doing somthing but its really just following. Compliance is strong impediment.
But how many Ts try to limit everyone to 8 1/2" x 11"? That needs to stop.
- improvement meets standards - innovation creates new standards-improvement play catch up - -innovation creates new ones
These are the real obstacles. Nothing else. https://t.co/yM2oS4PITP
A5: The two greatest challenges to innovation are FEAR and EGO.
Learn to let go of them and innovation is easy.
Yes, we are blocked by our district. Trying to change it. Slow progress. :(
A5 at times the curriculum and testing standards can get in the way of innovation because of time constraints & deadlines
Q5: Big challenge is sustaining leadership. Too many short-term supts and principals. Need long-term commitments and support.
Great to see your passion and willingness to find new ways forward. I assume your Ts appreciate.
it is possible to generate data around the impacts of our work. Maybe we need interrogation not innovation.
A5 That was from a George Carlin album we listened to one night on a Diego Garcia beach. Having fun teaching in school challenging?
I endorse this book. My colleagues and I read this book last yr and are beginning blended projects this yr. https://t.co/NpViaqqHZL
Should never be about that but instead collegial and collaborative growth. https://t.co/V8TpFKZiqU
RIGHT??! Don't just come in looking 4 what a T is doing wrong
Great share and great question to continually ask ourselves throughout the year..
A5: feeling confident enough to take risks, give up what they see as their control, look at "why" they do what do.
Yep. Focused on the future, with the understand that the past was, and the present already is.
scale is everything. We need students to think bigger
A5) Huge barrier---the worst phrase in education . . . But that's the way we've always done things.
W/ tight budgets & time constraints, this is common. It's why I highly value & optys
https://t.co/G0R73N7LCP
Q5: One barrier is not having a vision of what's possible, educators often isolated & haven't had opps to learn outside their silo
So true...everyone is sooo focused on the statewide grading system! Would love to her ideas to overcome this.
We spend too much time worried about pushing content, instead of pushing the ability to learn.
I got lost, my computer slowed down, question #5?
A5- "this is how we've always done it" mindset.
That's an empowering image because I think admin often feels like their jobs are routine and thankless. https://t.co/ZNLcmnshqA
A4: Admin who support innovation are master chefs who stir up the ingredients of greatness inside of their innovative teachers.
A5: being an & having 2 defend my practices 2 other Ts it's tough but I'm not discouraged 👊🏻
ground up leadership… yes please .. https://t.co/nF5WcDkPMN
Admins can recognize and foster new ground-up leadership that emerges in the innovation process
A5 - If you are not leading by innovating and transforming then you really are not leading
A5: I think the constraints can be a catalyst for innovation!
I agree!! https://t.co/nETmlL0WO5
Why do people at value innovation and fun so much more than other educators? We have to change this.
In the zone early is https://t.co/tDxWIcQfG1
A5: The two greatest challenges to innovation are FEAR and EGO.
Learn to let go of them and innovation is easy.
Yes. Exactly!!! Have to be a maverick in certain situations.
A5: To innovate doesn't mean being a rockstar or writing a book or presenting everywhere. You can innovate and never be known.
Exactly. Encourage risk taking by thinking bigger.
LAST QUESTION COMING UP IN 2 MINUTES
And it will help us all be innovative by sharing resources
A5-1 challenge is picking the best method, many ideas. Warning-be careful of the pendulum swinging too far. https://t.co/7tpzeDIxJS
A5 We are our biggest challenge. Our mindset. We get comfortable. We want easy. (We--the general we--not me!) We worry about tests.
My district controls the technology I can use. There are many blocks on it. :(
I haven't read ORIGINALS yet...hope to soon!
I think there is nothing wrong w/always offering to provide guidance. Just have to be comfrotable if not accepted.
A5 So I suppose the challenges that count are mostly internal (to oneself).. what we do in response to _____.
A5: Teach or help students to understand Growth Mindset. Ability isn't usually the barrier to learning.
A5 challenge to innovation-resistance to change;fear of moving away from status quo;accepting mediocrity https://t.co/PJ0Np4yCf0
A5 - The biggest challenge is often OURSELVES. This is tough work! Stay resilient. Find like minded people and make it happen!
not really good excuse. Ts should be networking & exploring new ideas. I have vision, just add support!
Absolutely! So happy to have made a FEW minutes of is key not scores! https://t.co/YdQw76Ywyz
We spend too much time worried about pushing content, instead of pushing the ability to learn.
A5 Clear comm can be barrier to innovation. Ts & As must make practices tangible to parents who don't recognize this classroom
Yea exactly and if admin is detached from life in the classroom this trend is encouraged even more. https://t.co/ejAXS5k06K
We spend too much time worried about pushing content, instead of pushing the ability to learn.
A5: curriculum needs to be covered, timelines, grades.......grades.....grades
Innovation is not about technology. But you can certainly play the game with the rules you're given
A5: test scores, perceived lack of control, less than understanding leadership, and evaluations.
Yes. I don't think we do. But I do think we use that time differently!
A5: Fear of losing control over the kids.
I call this "educational window dressing." Checking a box instead of impacting Ss https://t.co/rzLukm9lkA
A5:Compliance is alluring becus it looks like Eds r doing somthing but its really just following. Compliance is strong impediment.
Always thought of myself as an outlier. Always willing to take a risk because it's right for tchrs and Ss.
Love. And such a great perspective! https://t.co/GjymA0TrWw
A5: I think the constraints can be a catalyst for innovation!
A5: Shattering status-quo teaching and learning styles is the a big challenge. It's 2016 - time to turn the page!
It's a great book. I'm enjoying it.
I love the global connection. I am doing the best I can with what I have. Just wish for more. ;)
A6 At this point creating flexible seating, changing up homework-differentiation, not all the same and collaborative projects
Q5: Another problem is lack of incentive for teachers; no career progression unless they turn to admin. Need teacher leadership.
started lurking way too late to jump in but love this thread and this comment in particular! https://t.co/sr6d2JhUCT
Q5: Big challenge is sustaining leadership. Too many short-term supts and principals. Need long-term commitments and support.
A5: The roadblocks are inside the box, inside the head, get out of your head, out of the box
not really good excuse. Ts should be networking & exploring new ideas. I have vision, just add support!
Teachers take calculated & innovative risks when admins lead instructional conversations w/ questions rather than all the answers.
Some of it is who enters teaching-think back to Lortie's Schoolteacher. Most Ts are risk-averse
A5 getting stuck being static
Right. So how do keep our focus on what really matters and not the "fires"?
A6 come find out at the SREB Conference and see what we are doing with youo won't be disappointed
A6 come find out at the SREB Conference and see what we are doing with youo won't be disappointed
A5 Challenges exists everywhere, growth mindset & an innovative culture will allow us to tackle challenges together
A5 - forgetting your "why" of getting in education. Losing your passion. Being told "no" too many times 😞
A5 Since December I've been doing mostly video/broadcast project management. It was a touch change lemme tell you.. +
moved from a school that was under a microscope -- I struggled, but it made me better
A5: collaborating w/ colleagues who do not share same vision
True! But your students will never forget you or how you changed their way of thinking!
I believe that changing culture begins with people and relationships. Change that and you can change culture.
A5: To innovate doesn't mean being a rockstar or writing a book or presenting everywhere. You can innovate and never be known.
So, is the difference a focus on time? Innovation is future-focused; improvement is present-focused?
A5: The biggest challenge comes from being bogged down by systems and just trying to survive bc criticism can be harsh & constant.
A5 not really good excuse. Ts should be networking & exploring new ideas. I have vision, just add support!
But if you're innovating or leading Ss to? You are a rockstar! ✨ https://t.co/PfYmHzoDNE
A5: To innovate doesn't mean being a rockstar or writing a book or presenting everywhere. You can innovate and never be known.
A6: I'm listening to Ss and Ts which is innovative b/c it improves instruction & is not done nearly often enough.
Q6: Specifically, what are you using (provide link) that you feel is educationally innovative?
A5 In Germany the difficulties innovators experience mostly concern data protection, compliance with school and civil service laws
A5 I thought "This is the *least* creative job I've had in ages.." Only on Tuesday it occurred to me it's not black and white..
A5. Capacity must be built and maintained in school cultures to embrace change and innovation. Doesn't happen magically.
A5:Becoming stagnant and comfortable where you are as a teacher.
Teach them how to think, not what to think. They can learn content easy, but being problem solvers is hard. https://t.co/y7DoQVfLV2
We spend too much time worried about pushing content, instead of pushing the ability to learn.
A5 getting past naysayers, finding support, figuring what ideas work, knowing it's all a work in progress https://t.co/lkaC5BAg0H
A5. We get caught up about ss and social media/games that we try to curb it rather then utilize the opportunity to learn.
A5: not being completely prepared and losing motivation of Ss
True. It takes progressive educators like and other connected eds to move the needle, right?
genius hour this past year, standards based grading this next lots of tech usage https://t.co/f76GZbldAH
Q6: Specifically, what are you using (provide link) that you feel is educationally innovative?
Absolutely! Be a rockstar for your own students!
Thanks for sharing this with me!
Yeah, definitely. Plus, those many restrictions (German laws) https://t.co/4ybY61F7sP
These are the real obstacles. Nothing else. https://t.co/yM2oS4PITP
A5: The two greatest challenges to innovation are FEAR and EGO.
Learn to let go of them and innovation is easy.
A5: Also, too much emphasis on “pilots” instead of moving the entire school or district forward. Pilots fizzle out.
A5: our mindset, calendar, colleagues' and parents support, grading system - just some obstacles.
The value of a council to help you check thinking is a good first. Who can you rely on to help you w/perspective?
A5 It's up to me to be innovative wherever I find myself. Six months it took me to . So there we are: reflection vs reaction.
A5 when "the system" creates passive learning, acceptance of status quo, fear of failure, reward-punishment, risk will not B taken
Time 2 get ready 4 robotics -- my 12 yo loves this program. Have a great day all!

Agreed! https://t.co/SXgUvlbQlJ
Q5: Another problem is lack of incentive for teachers; no career progression unless they turn to admin. Need teacher leadership.
listen and silent same letters..risk the conversation
Agree! If the engagement is there time to try something new...empowerment! No going backwards https://t.co/xJVgidIifF
An atmosphere of admin support is key to growth. If teachers are always blamed for every problem they won't thrive.
A5: The term "student engagement" I hate it! We should be worried about student !!
- Yes! A teacher who loves his/her Ss is most important. Love the Ss before you try to revolutionize education.
I love this. That's me! I like to be behind the scenes making a difference. :)
Displaying why is a bringing leaders to new heights in Thank you, Scott!
Exactly. It's all about fostering , healthy communication and for any problem. https://t.co/U6Fq1rcp5C
I believe that changing culture begins with people and relationships. Change that and you can change culture.
-evolutionary vs revolutionary perhaps
Passion for what we do should overcome this, but then again the fear of slipping and falling is powerful
Keep hoping we will retire the phrase "education rock star" What exactly do rock stars bring to the table? https://t.co/ObCipfv0CP

LAST QUESTION
Let's help each other be innovative with resources and ideas
https://t.co/cuNg9ZVLQt
Q6: Specifically, what are you using (provide link) that you feel is educationally innovative?
. True. and others inspire change. We still have to mobilize the conversation. Take it to school.
one of the hardest things to do -- how to think

Agree. Many tchrs r not taught in college how 2do student centered learning Reflect what done in college. https://t.co/myK4PVBGfS
That's horrible. Should not be the case today with all the solid research on best practices!
A5 being innovative means things might not go perfectly-part of process but can be unsettling. Being open & sharing w/ others helps
A5: look at us all listing barriers when 2 Q's ago most agreed we would focus on solutions! This is where we can start our changes
We talk about critical thinking & problem solving while lecturing our Ss. Then blame Ss for not having skills. What?!?
Impatience can also be an impediment to innovation. Risks don't always pay off short term...sometimes it takes time.
Also value of leaders at all levels. Fires often occur when there are too few watching the pot.
Ts are natural innovators because, they couldn't be anything else. Todays EdTech classroom is finally moving to their beat
This. I might even add comfort in status quo. https://t.co/cbXuxm2MJC
A5: The two greatest challenges to innovation are FEAR and EGO.

You got that right. Teachers need to be trusted to do their thing.
But sometimes rockstars are portrayed as being so driven that they have no personal life.
. Trick is: always be on the lookout for it. And teach students to do the same.
Now if you asked me, there are times when each of these is the best fit.
