Derrek Fikes. OL Coach @ Brookwood High School. Consistently wondering how much those guys on the sidelines who give NFL players water make. 🤔 💰#HogFbChat
I am Jack Dingus, OL Coach at Shawnee High School in beautiful Shawnee, Oklahoma! Home of the Wolves! Shawnee will Shine tonight! I am Co-Founder and Co-Host of the Monday Night #hogfbchat
A1- We added board drill to our pre-game routine and I think it helped us with our attitude. I let them call each other out and we got after it. #hogfbchat
A1 we changed up how we did our zone doubles and gap doubles made them more similar to what they would see in a game and also streamlined it to get maximum reps #HogFbChat
Q1:!you set up with a partner diagonal from each other and basically just working on tracks block. Simple and helps get the juices flowing with a little contact #hogfbchat
A1: I would say the focus on stance and starts and where our power should be coming from. A big point of emphasis was on driving off the ball, not stepping. #HogFbChat
A1: I did a 2v2 down block and skip pull drill as a progression. Everyone skip pulls, everyone works down blocks, then we put it together. Backer either scrapes or fills to make OL redirect. #hogfbchat
A1) no one particular “drill.” Prefer to incorporate #SKAQ. Continually look at the film to narrow my focus on what needs to be addressed and improved. #HogFBChat
A1: nothing truly new, just tweaks of drills that made them more effective. Worked the wrench drill in with our Chevy blocks and more @OLPerformance drills where needed #hogfbchat
A1: not earning any patents here, but late in the season, felt like we got a lot of energy AND skill development driving the 5-man sled together as a whole program (Var, JV, OL, WRs, QBs, RBs) Explosion at snap, low pad level, Wide base, choppy steps #hogfbchat
A1: I’ve been looking at a lot of new drills to incorporate next year over the past couple of days, for us the staple is our “fit and finish” in the hotbox. #hogfbchat
Late to the party, Mathew Bennett, from Woodmont High School in Greenville, South Carolina. Glad to learn from some of you guys! Missed last week due to being as sick as I've been in a long time. #hogfbchat
A1 I'd have to say screen drill. Did it everyday.. we work the numbers up to the next level, it got everyone running first thing in practice, got energy and tempo up made o line hustle #HogFbChat
A1: Our OL and RB coaches came up with a drill we called "tracks" drill to work our most popular runs to the various fronts of the week and educate the RBs on where the play was likely to hit based on the front and how we were adjusting the blocking scheme. #HogFbChat
A1: I used a 10yx10y box and coupled OL together on each side. Y/T, T/G, G/C, C/G going out of the box. Then pads or bodies across from each side. We worked various down/around and pass pro combos. Easily got 20-30 reps a minute. #hogfbchat
We do the "Dash's Dairy" where the o-line partner up and work every individual block known to mankind. We get lots of reps with limited time. #HogFbChat
A1) Fave new drill recently: Inside hull, walk through first half of play to get perfect fit/show RB how hole develops. Then, on whistle, finish play live to show RBs how it gets messy and help OL finish play with feet. Less big contact too. #hogfbchat
A1: had used boards/chutes at my last school. Boards were the thing I ordered when I got to Humboldt. Felt like kids moved their feet a lot better as the year went on. #hogfbchat
A1) Badger Slant. All OL in line 3 “all time defense guys” rapid pace DL slants across OL face. Helped get us loose for practice. Working solo blocks with OL, let’s them get a lot of reps at accelerating their second step vertical against a slant which we saw a lot #HogFbChat
A1: Not a drill but added a lot more group work between Indy and team. Used it for fine tuning and improv in the small space before expanding it to the big picture #HogFBChat
A1) If IZ/WZ is in then I’m always incorporating 2v2 or 2v3 pods. We were more of a gap team this year & it was my first year w/o a chute so I was proud/surprised at my ability to get creative…but still need to get better. Mid-szn hand replace drills were huge for us. #hogfbchat
A1: Started using reach blocks on our board drills more than just lining up on the board already. Felt it made them work harder and gave a more realistic reach block type look #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat my favorite drill is probably working our down blocks.Teaching shoulder placement, head placement, and teaching our athletes to block horizontally and not vertically. One of the toughest habits I have had to break. Every athlete thinks they need to block someone 10 yd
Three blockers, C simulates down, one open pulls, the other skip pulls around. Forces open pull to keep flat to LOS, forces skip puller to get depth and get downhill. #HogFBChat
Coaches, looking to hire an OC at Williams High School in Burlington , NC. Great football tradition that I am excited to rebuild. If you have any interest in interviewing I would love to discuss the opportunity. Love what I see on a weekly basis!! DM me if interested #hogfbchat
A1: not much new. But we did a lot of work on Med balls pre season (boards, hand progression, anything working a fit) and I think it really helped our kids get a good fit. #hogfbchat
A:1 we really work hard on coming downhill on IZ this year so we worked a board drill and offset the bag to our insides shoulder and went over and up, flipper into the bag and then duck down the board. Great for balance and uncovered in doubles for us. #HogFbChat
A1: The favorite drill we added this year for me was moving our combo blocks drill into our cubes instead of under the chute all the time. It gave us more of a phone booth feel to them. Really added to the drill. #hogfbchat
A1. "What's Happenin"awareness drill, they turn around, I arrange a defensive front 7, call a play and turn them toward the defense and they have 5-7 seconds to communicate and block play correctly. Change the front and play each rep #hogfbchat
A1) My favorite drill we use is a pretty simple board drill, getting the lineman to make as many short, choppy steps as possible down the board and meet the backer. We believe if we can get to backer we have a chance to score. #hogfbchat
A1: We alternated between board drill and reach drill to start Indy time. Gotta have something that gets them a little lather and amped. Never did the reach drill until this year. #HogFbChat
A1 we introduced something call “Juice” it’s OL/DL, 1 on 1, no board, just beat the guy in front of you and it is a mini tournament. Winner moves on to the next round. It takes about 5 minutes and gets those guys ticked off! #hogfbchat
A1: Also enjoyed using "Clemson" drill in the offseason and first part of the season. Working down blocks and pulls at the same time helped save time. #hogfbchat
A1: Worked big time on finish drills this year! Fav was our base drive progression drills- made em twice as long .... 2 boards-2 whistles...Fight to Finish... stole em from @ChicagoBears#hogfbchat
A1: full zone combos with bags and boards. Defender presents himself or OL moves on to LB depth. Gets them using their free hand and working on head placement as well #HogFbChat
A1 @Coach__Adams was nice enough to buy us a chute. Needless to say it may our EDD drills a lot more efficient. I like doing stances and starts every day as well as zone footwork. Also a drill called perfect snaps to help the centers work on accuracy. #HogFBChat
A1: Definitely half-line work. Allowed guys to see the whole scheme and understand their role within it. On bags. Controlled. With different looks vs. different fronts. Tons of reps without tons of hitting/overworking. #hogfbchat
A1 cont: also got rid of LB in double team drills for a while to focus on moving the DL. Have been too quick/anxious to get to backer in years past. #hogfbchat
A1: We do a drill called changing lanes. We come off on the 5 man. After a good explosion and drive we blow a whistle and the whole line has to move one pad over without the sled stopping. Works on re-fitting at second level and not stopping our feet.
#Hogfbchat
A1: Our JV offense provided a scout look for our Varsity defense 3 days a week. 20 plays in 25-30 minutes. Gave our OL confidence vs bigger, faster, stronger guys and they loved it. Led to some dominant OL play on thursday nights. #Hogfbchat
A1: First Drill we incorporated was the “Step Drill” we used agile bags. The emphasis was to use the agile bags to keep our feet wide while we duck walked. Also used to put an emphasis on our first two steps #Hogfbchat
A1: Designed a warmup drill that incorporated stance/start, jump cuts, blocking footwork, routes, ball drills, and route footwork all into one with just 5 cones. We could get a ton of reps with about 15 guys in 5 minutes. #hogfbchat
A1: Circle Pull Drill to work our power pulls. Got a ton of reps when we did it. Would like to find some new stuff this offseason to help keep things fresh. #hogfbchat
A1: full zone combos with bags DL presents himself or OL moves on to LB depth. Gets them recognizing the hip of the DL and keeps their eyes up for the LBs #HogFbChat
A1: It was my first year at a new school. The other OL guy was here already and taught me a damn good double team drill. We incorporated a Crowther block to reach level two, which is something I've never done before. I love it and its staying with me from here on out. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat
A1- Using more Med balls incorporated to drills...also repped skip pulls & Down blocks alot. We heavy G-T so we drilled up all parts of G-T everyday.
Board drills give me life. First year at my new school and we didn’t have boards. Used half-moons instead but would like to get back to using more traditional boards. Perfect way to start practice! #hogfbchat
In reply to
@austinpink2, @CoachShemby, @CoachDingus
A1: we worked a lot of double team with a pad wedged in between the pair until they came off on lb and a lot of reach blocking by just going 1 on 1 with the dline #Hogfbchat
A1- #HogFbChat
The drill that we used that was new for us was the shield on the hips between the 2x team on a tackling dummy then a real person after they got the hang of it.
The best point we used this year was with our steps. We used the OLP line of moving the earth w/steps
Very similar to what I do with my guys. Have them clap on a cadence when given a play so they are “hitting the cadence” at the same time while knowing who to block. #hogfbchat
A2: IZ/OZ. Hasn’t changed, doubt it will, and it’s pretty successful for us. Adjusted our rules on OZ some but still the heart stayed the same #HogFBChat
A1
Board Drill to Moving Backer ... 2 for 1 Drill that forces the lineman to keep their eyes up and not on the board. Can’t see it Can’t Strike it
#hogfbchat
A2: our bread a butter is the power but we implanted IZ and OZ this season. Had to tweak how we blocked it. Did more single blocks instead of combos with IZ and worked man over with the play side tackle hooking to DE with the OZ. #hogfbchat
We stayed in a man blocking scheme but had to make some changes as we went based on the personnel we had. Injuries hurt us on the line this year. Looking to move to more of a zone scheme next year. #hogfbchat
A2: Inside zone. Didn’t tweak much with the OL but messed with the backs alignment a little bit. Started him in pistol then would tab him one way or the other for the handoff. #hogfbchat
we were pretty balanced between Stretch and Power...few adjustments to stretch other than formations maybe, dabbled with some 1 back power and would love to learn more about it from someone who really does it. #HogFbChat
A2: Inside Zone and Power. Not really any tweaks during the season, which I think helped. We lived with what got us there and what we worked on since day 1 #hogfbchat
A2 - we started out with IZ as our base scheme began to morph to more of an outside zone in the form of jet and hand sweeps and pin pull team - ran some tackle trap and 1 back power
#HogFbChat
A2: We were heavy Power / IZ. We leaned more towards IZ as the season went on. Ran it with a - split flow (could read the BS, we would also exchange responsibilities between the T and FB on split zone which was a great wrinkle) also would fold block the FS, zone the BS #hogfbchat
A2: Well, we started the year in split back veer, which we were heavy OSV and ISV. We had a couple non-option runs as well, but we switched to the double wing which means we ran superpower. We tweaked superpower with some tags. I'd have to kill you if I told you though #hogfbchat
A2) IZ. We changed the backside to give us better angles up front. We also involved the H in certain sets and added tags with him. Load, lead, leak, influence, wham. Made it look different each week. #hogfbchat
A2: Most run play was inside zone. We tweaked it by adding some fold blocking on the backside to get and take advantage of leverage when we had it. Mixed results but will continue to develop that #HogFbChat
A2: Power and Counter. Like I said, in Shawnee, Oklahoma we pride ourselves on running power. RPO= Run Power Often. The GoonSquad fully accepts the challenge. #hogfbchat
"Holding" Drill: OL with bands around elbows in fit. Defense works to get off block. Forced to move feet and keep grip on pads.
"Cut" Drill: used Tackle ring to rip up through working leverage and low impact on guys. #hogfbchat
A2: IZ, we started making a “lock” call to the BS. It’s helped when we were having trouble blocking LBs. We would turn the run/pass read a 2nd level read on the LB. Looking at some Counter and Power variations for next year with our H back. #hogfbchat
A2: We base out of gap scheme Wing-T. We pretty much just run our stuff each week tbh. Obviously some plays will work better against certain defenses, but plays never really change. We will throw about 35-40 formations and multiple motions at you though #hogfbchat
A2: We are a Wing-T program. Our base runs consisted of the belly, Buck, and down families. We got most of our extra mileage just by formationing, especially late in szn. Toss and trap CWM from trips bunch were huge for us. #hogfbchat
A2: Didn’t really have a base run scheme were a bit all over. loved OZ, CTR, some fold/wrap schemes.. outside zone was by far our best run play this year my guys and the RBs got really comfortable with it #HogFbChat
A2: Tweaked power by running different variations especially some new stuff our OL coach dreamt up vs Odd and Bear which we saw a lot of this year. #HogFbChat
A2: changed to power read this year. But ran more IZ as year progressed. Opposite happened last season: IZ was main play and ran more power read. Work hard with WZ this year and made it effective and brought it back into the arsenal. #hogfbchat
A1: We do a drill called changing lanes. We come off on the 5 man. After a good explosion and drive we blow a whistle and the whole line has to move one pad over without the sled stopping. Works on re-fitting at second level and not stopping our feet.
#Hogfbchat
A2: We were both zone and gap scheme early in the season. As the season progressed, we were more gap scheme once we found our groove in district play. #hogfbchat
A1: 2 of the drills that helped us the most this year was our hand strike drill we use in the off season. (Great for violent hands) The 2nd drill we use, I stole from some Wing-T gurus. Running on the sled ensures our guys bring the funk and RB’s don’t bounce it.
#HogFbChat
A2 cont: didn’t have to tweak it so much but really harping on the aiming points made it look better as the year went on.. my guys probably hear me yelling the aiming points in their sleep #HogFBChat
A2: Inside zone. We get a lot out of it by changing the aiming points of the RB and changing the playside leverage of the OL. Also did well with guard/H-back counter. #Hogfbchat
#hogfbchat Our number 1 run scheme was buck sweep. Our adjustment against a heavy penetrating DE was to hit it tighter and have the PSG lead up and BSG kick out.
Late to the party.... power.. added some different tags variations that allowed us to adjust to some different looks that we’re giving us issues in past. #HogFBChat
A2- Power. If we were in a full house towards the end of the year I actually influence pulled opposite of the play to pull a LB out of the way. #hogfbchat
A2: IZ and OZ. Tweaks during the year were different tags used. RPOs to slow LB/S flow/commit. Locking the BSDE against 5-man boxes on occasion (game plan decision). Using BS iso with the sniffer as a change up for IZ #hogfbchat
My favorite drill that we incorporated was the basic mirror drill. We had a rough time with keeping our base in pass pro against athletic DL. #hogfbchat
A2: Lots if inside veer & Midline. As teams started to 2i with stacked ILBs, tweaked the G’s Midline rule to allow and outside release instead of the inside track the just led to driving down on 2i and an unblocked ILB #HogFbChat
A:2 we run a ton of IZ and at times if we got an odd front we would run a mini pin and pull with our C because he was so athletic. Confused the heck out of PSLB when we saw downblock from the Guard. We got a lot of IZ’s bounced for hug gains on that. #hogfbchat
A1. Loved working our outside zone steps on our sled, slid players over 1 and a half bags L/R depending on play direction, loved it when all players hit the sled in unison #hogfbchat
A2) A very fun single-back gap scheme with some backside reads built-in. Had a Dart Read variation that gave us lots of production at both levels this year. Zone was hit & miss early but started to hit late in the season. 1/2 #hogfbchat
A2) cont…Pass game we have a kid that can spin it & dudes all over the place. We were the def of balanced when it came to spreading the wealth. Everybody ate this year. They’re nearly all coming back, plus a few that are ready to make the jump to Friday nights. 😈 2/2 #hogfbchat
A2 traditional zone blocking scheme. Nothing too flashy, but effective because we repped it every day. My days of playing in the triple option came in handy when it came to drillwork and how to teach it #HogFBChat
A2: started season trying to run split-flow zone. Struggled. Switched to more RPO off of IZ, getting OL to focus on double teams. Still struggled. Was that kind of year. #buildscharacter#hogfbchat
A2) Mostly gap scheme and flirted with a bit of Inside zone... interested to hear how many schemes that coaches implement effectively in a short time frame #hogfbchat
How far apart do you have the cones for MD? I used to have mine at about 4 yards. I asked for some feedback from a kid I train out of Western Kentucky and he said at that length it’s too hard to keep a good pass set. Knocked it down to a yard or a yard and a half #hogfbchat
A2: IZ, reading the DE, kicking the DE from different spots, bluff the DE, base the DE and insert the H back, run Str, Wk, push the boxes, read the B gap player. You name it, we probably did it #hogfbchat
A2) Gap scheme, didn’t change much. Most adjustments came with stance/aimpoints with young OL as they developed and learned their strengths/weaknesses. #hogfbchat
A2: Heavy Inside zone team. Had a smart group that would tweak things on their own based off who had better blocking angles and gave them some freedom to do so this year. Pin and Pull and pushing the Mike over to account for edge pressures etc.
#HogFbChat
A2: we are both zone and gap scheme (counter). Because we saw a lot of even fronts we ran a lot more gap. However, if they were getting a lot of front side pressure we would get a H Back in the game and pull guard and H. This allowed us to RPO the 2nd level.
#HogFbChat
@Fertitta_Gabe what are we talking about? Time outs with more than 3 seconds left to win a game so your play by play announcer has no shot of getting into the announcer hall of fame . #HogFbChat
We used a three yard gap between the cones. Tried to use as much realism as possible with the drill. Would change it up between the horizontal version and transition to a vertical version. #hogfbchat
A3: pass pro this year was a 4-man slide. All gaps covered and everything should ideally be picked up. Unfortunately, our backs were confused LITERALLY all year, and our OL didn’t communicate on it very well. Sooo my tweak was making the QB call protection. #hogfbchat
We do a bit of everything. We slide protect on our quick 3 step drops. We always have the BST block out if no threat to slide protection call to eliminate a back on a big body. Big on big for 5 step drops. For Sprint outs we slide onside and gate backside. #HogFbChat
A3: Zone slide/Man. Slide from uncovered. Tweaked with heavy blitz teams by checking or calling full slide. Never like putting RB on DE, though... #hogfbchat
We ended up playing a lot of 3-4 or 33 stack teams. So Center and both tackles were man on with both guards dual reading LB to anything off “the roof” #hogfbchat
A2 we also ran quick toss a lot.. we used pin and pull technique a lot. Guard and tackle pulling if we could. Cracked block with our wr.. we did a little power read with the toss. Combined a gy scheme to open up our qb the some rpo #HogFbChat t
A3- big on big protection. Our big tweak was using the TB in the protection/check down. Switched which side they used and if that LB came we replaced him with the TB for an easy check down. Huge plays for us all year #Hogfbchat
A3: we are a half man slide team. Simplified what gap my guys are responsible for. On some occasions we went BoB which I like but need to be better at talking #hogfbchat
A3 We have Three protections it is predicated on play call. Obviously you have to tweak them during the game. We make the adjustment. Especially if we didn’t see it during breakdown. BOB, Spider, Slide. #hogfbchat
A3: We started in a BOB quick throw protection. As we started to throw the ball done the field more, we went to a half slide. Really preached getting a rack of ribs whenever available. #hogfbchat
A1: I really enjoyed our combo drills. It let the kids visualize 2 for 2. Four hands, four eyes concept. I would definitely want to add a hand shield in between the double team next year to help reinforce keeping your hips together. #hogfbchat
A3: Half-slide. Had a check against any 5-man/bear looks. Also had checks for pressure looks. Would go full slide for teams that were more creative with stunts, twists, pressures, etc. #hogfbchat
A3: Our Base pass pro was PA of our run game, full slide, and 1/2 slide with BS hinging. Our biggest adjustment was locking the BST on the BSE and having the FB insert inside the BSTs hip instead of outside. My Ts are better pass pro than the backs. #hogfbchat
A3: we half slide the line from the Center over and man up the back 2 with RB help. This is great for 6 man protection but moving forward we have tweaked rules based on empty sets. The more simple the protection, the more window dressing you can do with everyone else.
#HogFBChat
Yes we teach the term “off the roof” and it means Corners, Safety, LB. We didn’t want our guys looking at the DE as someone he had to account for because the Tackle has him. #hogfbchat
In reply to
@CoachHawn, @CoachDingus, @CoachShiffman
A3: we live in a 4-man slide. We try to eliminate as much one-on-one as possible and allow our guys to help each other as much as possible. Hate leaving guys on an island; love to see it when our guys start ganging up on pass rushers #hogfbchat
A3: We used a half slide protection that made it easy to pick up blitzes from some pretty damn good defenses we saw this year. We struggled with it early on but got better after we repped the hell out of it as the season went on. #hogfbchat
A3 jumping in late here. We were half slide. My first year doing it and I loved it!! Just adjusted technique for sprint out and play action, same assignments #hogfbchat
A3) mainly 1/2 man 1/2 slide. Also had quick game and sprint out. Didn’t change a ton but just continued to work our eyes on the slide side and really understand how they worked together in the slide and wether or not the C could let someone cross their face. #hogfbchat
A3: Big on Big. Alternated on what we did with the back. Started out as a check down, the. Started keeping him in as an extra blocker. Still looking for the best answer. Pass pro is one of my big projects this offseason. #hogfbchat
When I was in college (forever ago) we used about a space of a yard, yard and a half. We did best 2/3. And if you sulked & didn’t protect the cone the DL could get inside right away again. Forced you to play “one at a time.” Good or bad shake it off and get ready. #hogfbchat
In reply to
@FISTFootball, @Coach_CainOL, @CoachDingus
A3) Run 75% of the time. If we’re not PAP, I love the slide pro. I find it to be the most efficient way to protect with a limited amount of practice time. Very aggressive after fit, so we’re able to stay in attack mode and let the DL know their in for a long night. #hogfbchat
A3) B.O.B and Slide ... We use Slide a lot when we’re keeping the RB in to be our 6th Blocker.... he must help us became the tweak. The check down was abanded to solidify protection #hogfbchat
A3) We had typical sprint out w/ BS turnback, playaction variations, & a 1/2 man 1/2 slide protection for 3 & 5-step. Center set the slide one way, back went oppo (read inside-out). BSG & BST were man. 3-step OTs had freedom to cut or attack DE based on alignment. #hogfbchat
A3: as a triple option base, see a ton of loaded boxes. Lots of 7 and 6 man pro off playaction, half slide weak with man and low hats to the front. #HogFbChat
A3: started w/ half-slide, half-man, w/ Center making the call. Had some success, but w/ injuries late in the season, had to switch to full slide w/ RB on DE. Made slide call part of play-call. Not gorgeous, but it worked. #hogfbchat
A3 our base protection is the half slide. We do it a bit different psT has the first down defender man to man, psG has #2 m2m, even if it's the nose. The other three slide over while the rb takes the "bubble" db read on the 2lbers #HogFbChat
#hogfbchat We have a slide protection that we use for deep throws and a wedge type protection for quick throws. Both could use some updating on my end. We got better as the year went on but still a lot of room for growth
A3: Core Dropback protection was a man-zone scheme. OL would be more agressive in their set in play action or 5-man/empty. We also understood when we needed to max protect with RB and TE. #Hogfbchat
A3. We see a lot of 4 down fronts and go Big on Big, allows our center the chance to help with 2i and eye the mike. We pinch and fan out of it for different looks and can adjust our back to fit in as well. #Hogfbchat
I’m always open to learning. We didn’t get deep into reading 2nd level defenders. We really started incorporating about half way through our season and kept it pretty Vanilla. Had a “pop” and attached “stick” to IZ. #HogFBChat
A3: Since a majority of throws were three step, we ran a lot of big on big. One tweak we made mad cutting backside. This allowed for a running lane for our mobile QB #HogFbChat
vs. 3-4: have off & on calls. “Off” puts the guard back inside to double w/the C to his stacked backer. “On” tackle & guard fan to the OLB & DE.
vs. 3-3: RT = man; RG/C = N to stacked Mike; LG/LT = DE to stacked backer; RB = stack backer over RT.
Simplified rules. #hogfbchat

A4: Personally. just talking to as many coaches as possible to learn as much as I can. Excited to be going to @WeAreAFCA convention this year to learn from some of the best! #hogfbchat
A3: We are a half line slide team. After having some trouble with teams walking down Sams and wills and bumping to a Bear front last year we did a much better job of knowing when and when not to freak out. Knowing the difference in 5,6,7 man protections.
#HogFBChat
A3- #HogFbChat
We went a ton of BOB because we were Air Raid in our DNA. The back would make a call on every play. Some were dummy, but if he were staying in we would go with a man side and a gap side based on help responsibilities.

A3 if we have 5 down, we call Becky, big on big.. if we have an extra threat on the backside, we call gang, making it man to man on the 3 threats, and rb has doulbe read on the 2isLB #HogFbChat
A4- switched my RG and RT week 5 to help both kids succeed. Added a pancake chain week 8 for the guys getting LEGAL pancakes. Gave our JR who was hurt the job of handing it out. Became a war to see who would get one. Really stepped up our intensity. #Hogfbchat
Moving my LT to RG and moving the RG to RT. The LT was a mauler and was better suited to play Guard. The RG that moved to RT had better pass pro and was very patient. #hogfbchat
A4: has to fire 2 seniors and replace with a junior and a soph. We hit the SLED twice a week which I thought made us better. Excited we are going to have 4 of 5 coming back up front #HogFbChat
A4: said "hell with it" and started using our best available linemen on the OL. We tried to platoon OL/DL early on but injuries and necessity forced us to use some defensive players on OL and vice versa. Great move and I wish we had done it sooner!! #HogFbChat
A4: due to injury my line was a shuffle. So you could say those were my major changes. Other than that, I didn’t really change much up. I mean.... I switched up my skip pull. I used to have them clear step with their play side foot. Now they just start the pull #hogfbchat
You want people to be scared of how much they love you! -Micahel Scott, the Office.
But seriously, know your craft and know how to build relationships
#hogfbchat
The biggest change our program made was our offensive line being so much more aggressive. When I first got here in week 4, you couldn't tell the difference between our run and pass blocking. By the week 9 we were blowing people off the ball! #HogFbChat
A4: we have been a 10 personnel team forever going into the season we wanted to be in a lot more 11 personnel but we figured out through the year it wasn’t working for us went back to the old SXU spread and won 6 straight to win our conference #HogFbChat
A4: went to a HULK package and brought in our 2 big, backup guards. Moved our starting RG to RB and rammed it home! Kids up front loved it, and our RG had 3 TDs on the season and multiple 2-point conv. #hogfbchat
A3: Basic BOB 5 man protection witch eventually turned into 6 man protection with the RB helping out with the blitz. Sprint outs playside was aggresive reach and backside hinge. #HogFBChat
A4: Started meeting before warmup to do footwork drills and skate steps(drive-catch for us. Easier for guys to understand). Also ran quick run through plays with no pads on. Got blood flowing before we strapped it up. #hogfbchat
A4: Had to use more 2 way guys as the season wore on. Couple of the DLineman gave us a little nastier mentality up front when we needed it over some younger guys who had been starting #HogFbChat
Made time for FUN!! Especially later in the season. Instead of “working” during pre-practice I let them play various games. I had 2 rules. 1. Participate 2. Keep moving. I think sometimes we forget that these student athletes are still KIDS. Make football fun!! #hogfbchat
A4. Our players would go out to train before, not anymore. All in house strength and conditioning, new weight program implemented, put in more ways for players to hold themselves accountable . Divided the team into teams to increase competition #hogfbchat
A4: I toyed with a flex day... where my guys switched sides of the ball or played a different position- forced guys to increase scheme knowledge and overall "O-Linemen" techniques. Never know when an injury is coming... #hogfbchat
A3: Slide Rip,Liz, BOB big on big we tweak protections based on where pressure is coming from. Most high school level or any level QBS do not like pressure in their face so we work inside out to ID most dangerous. Inside pressure pickup trumps outside. #HogFBChat
A4: Early in camp played with some different lineups. Shuffled some guys around just to get best fit. Some guys had to know all 3 spots for versatility. We started 4 seniors up front so they did a great job “coaching on the field.” #hogfbchat
A4 put in a tight package (Hogs) so we could impose our will against teams and switch things up from our spread personnel. I was a happy offensive line coach that day. #HogFbChat
Can understand that but it’s not realistic to what they’ll have to encounter. I want them to use their hands...it’s also a competition for me so the hands are necessary. #hogfbchat

A4: cross training guys, back up center moved all around, kids in different spots. We were thin with our numbers on the OL. Needed guys to be versatile. #hogfbchat
I used to do that, but I’ve found that when my guys have heir hands behind their backs pull their head and chest back too far, rolling their hips forward. I let them carry their hands in front, but they aren’t allowed to use them to emphasize footwork. #hogfbchat

#hogfbchat We slowed everything way down. Picked one base play a week to really focus on upfront Walked and talked through it. By the end of the year we were playing our best and moving the ball well against any and all fronts.First year as HC hopefully we can pick up next year
A4) We had some difficulties w/ our backs picking up blitzers. For a couple of weeks we free released the RB on a swing route and if they blitzed it he could be there as an outlet. Never ended up needing it so we ended up bringing him back in. 1/3 #hogfbchat
A4) cont…And it wasn’t exactly DURING the season but it was as close as you could get. We had a battle at the center spot. Decided during warm-ups of Wk1 on who we were going with. 2/3 #hogfbchat
A4) cont…The senior that lost the battle ended up being a factor on both sides. Was our most reliable OL when we needed him to be. I was (and still am) extremely proud of how he responded to that situation. He’ll forever be someone I reference & remember back to. 3/3 #hogfbchat
A4: We started using a lot more team time and group work once we started getting it turned around. Individual time was typically short and very specific in what we were trying to accomplish #HogFbChat
Put one of our sophomores at LT and stepped up big time. We started the year flip flopping our line but it didn't translate well with our huddle/and play calling so we ended that soon after spring. #HogFbChat
A4: Went to some different formations and compressed set packages to complement what we were already doing on the perimeter. They were highly effective. #hogfbchat
A4: We were young so I think the biggest change for us was adjusting to what this group of players did well. Personnel dictates a lot and asking your kids to do something they cannot do guarantees failure. Screens saved us and help out our line tremendously.
#HogFBChat
A4) Switched thinking to EWD’s (Every Week Drills) instead of an EDD’s mindset. Allowed us to sufficiently drill all the movements and techniques needed in the Single Wing. What you neglect degrades. #HogFbChat
A4: We moves guys around. Promoted some freshmen up to the varsity. Can’t be complacent. Strives to be students of the game. Knowledge makes great football players. #hogfbchat
We did both in college we warmed up hands behind our backs to emphasize feet and hips. Then we kept our hands up because we “buzzed” our hands. #hogfbchat

A4: started to flip our line, had down side and a pull side just because they were such better pullers and the down G & T were my ass kickers #hogfbchat
And that's a wrap! The fastest hour on Twitter is over! Thank you coaches for participating tonight in the #hogfbchat a great tool for learning, growing and just talking football with your coaching brethren. #hogfbchat#allgasnobrakes#GoGo
A4) Not a major change, but in trying to build unity/football knowledge, had boys constantly asking each other questions, teach each other new techniques, and understand each others roles. If they learn to do this in practice, it’s nasty in the 4th quarter. #hogfbchat
A3: The most important thing for us in pass protection simplify things for our RBs. We try to keep it as simple on them as possible if we were keeping them in. We also would cross them in pass pro or align in pistol to mess with protection tendencies #hogfbchat
A2: we had a very athletic QB and big backs. We ran power and power read/pitch a bunch. Got to where we did it out of every personnel we had, including 13, 20, 21, 11, and 10. Then had play actions and boots off of them. #hogfbchat
Please remember to follow your fellow coaches for weekly chats and constant collaboration! Embrace the brotherhood and appreciate the men and women we have to lean on in this profession! #hogfbchat
A4: As much as we tried to two platoon, it wasn't gonna happen. We played our best 11 on the field. Offense, defense, and special teams. Guys rallied around each other and we saw huge differences. #hogfbchat
A4 relied on a triple vs a nose more on inside plays.. tackles would compliment the play.. used our te on blocking inside with folds and gy type pulls.. more non-base blocking with pin and pulls and cross blks #HogFbChat
If anybody has questions or topics they would like discussed on a future #hogfbchat please do not hesitate to DM myself or @CoachDingus and we will get it taken care of. #hogfbchat
A4. Was lucky enough to have the same line first snap week one till last snap week 11 with no change in between. Here's hoping that continues. #hogfbchat
It's the best part of Monday! Thanks for all of the info coaches! If anyone is going to the @WeAreAFCA convention let me know! I'd love to meet you guys in person! Have a blessed week! #Hogfbchat#allgasnobrakes
Used poker chips and had kids have to demonstrate the plays and schemes, film them with narration, and send them to me. That would be some of our meeting time. #hogfbchat
One thing we did was make sure every lineman snapped the ball for 5 min 2-3 times a week in pre-practice, helped us when our starting center had shoulder surgery and we had to shuffle people around #hogfbchat
I’ve been your cohost Tony Shiffman and I can’t thank you all enough for participating in the chat tonight. We are looking forward to seeing you next Monday at 8pm CST for the newest installment of the #hogfbchat

A4: Kept continuing to build off of the little successes we were having every day at practice. Coaching my guys that though the play called may not be the one they personally want, to still block that play to perfection and know the time to pound the rock would come. #HogFbChat
A4: For JV, we had to restructure practice with fewer players and coaches. Mondays were defense (w/varsity coach help), tuesdays were offense, wednesdays were situations and ST. Focused more on playing in our system fast and less on scouting for the opponent. #Hogfbchat
This going to be one of those chats were I have to scroll back and read posts because I was franticly drawing diagrams, searching for film, and answering questions. WHICH IS AWESOME! LOVE THIS GAME AND PROFESSION! @RunThePower#hogfbchat#RTPNation

A1 Working through first step, then first two, then first two with hand punch on shields in rapid succession. Add a drive/finish component the last time through. #hogfbchat
A2: We were both zone and gap scheme. We were good at outside zone and our guards and tackles were good at pulling. Sometimes we made a switch call to tell the tackle to stay and block out on the 5 and the H-back to pull on counter. #hogfbchat
Half-man, half-slide
• Slide side = has a GAP, not a man. I want to implement a zone count system next season to clean things up for this.
• Man side = guard gets 1st guy C-out (including a NG); tackle gets 2nd guy. RB will SPRINT at the LB/3rd man, no hesitation
#hogfbchat
Another drill for the old school coach in me, line up in the coupe and run through all the steps for each play. Very basic but it helped out our pad level so much. Also the six point explosion on the sled helped with hands. #hogfbchat
Start on cone 3 yards away from the 3.
1. Stance and jump cut Right.
2. Stay on far cone. Hitch/Fin coming back.
3. Stance and jump cut Left.
4. Hitch/Fin coming back.
5. 2 second Block and Shuffle R
6. Hitch/Fin
7. 2 second Block and Shuffle L
8. Hitch/Fin
Then footwork Dig/Curl
My favorite part about any of the chats that happen on twitter is when the official chat ends but the conversations keep going for hours! #hogfbchat#txhsfbchat#flhsfbchat
Q3: We have four different protections based off of the play call. We had a pocket pass protection, screen protection, boot protection, and sprint out protection. #hogfbchat
Any coaches willing to share film I am looking for the following:
-Power/Counter out of the gun
-1st & 2nd Level RPOs
Always love to see what we can do better or what wrinkles we may be able to add.
Shoot me a DM or email jecher@usd407.org
#hogfbchat
Absolutely. Have them split the 4i/4’s crotch with their outside knee. Keeps a half-man relationship & allows him to protect the inside if necessary. #hogfbchat

A2 Power Read, biggest tweak through the year was perimeter blocking as teams tried to force a give read. Early on we had guys going unblocked due to a variety of reasons. #hogfbchat
A3 Full slide with RB on edge rusher, tweaked by trying to teach OL to identify the “bubble” and whether or not anyone is rushing it. Backs struggled on edge and we want the tackle to help out as much as possible. #hogfbchat
A4: went hurry up no huddle w/ signals, had been using wristbands. Was a change up, but wk 5 went to it whole sale. Cut down on pre-snap penalties, allowed us to catch people tired & not able to change defenses. Could get in different personnel looks w/o subbing #hogfbchat
A4 Used like six different starting combinations at the OL spots due to injuries/sickness, position changes, resting starters for defense, suspensions, a kid getting ejected early on. Karma for one starting lineup all of 2017 regular season. #hogfbchat
**Had those screenshots all mixed up. The first two are Power Read variations. The third, and last, screenshot is of the Dart (Tackle Power) Read we ran this year. Got a little ahead of myself. 😂🤷♂️ #hogfbchat
I like to make our guys hold a tennis ball between their palms against their chest when we work mirror. Tight hands and elbows, roll the meatball! #HogFbChat

A4: Upped competition level by bringing some DL guys over. Made a package for some of those guys and they helped us. And shuffled around practice schedules to our needs #HogFbChat
