Hah, kidding. You know I’m a fan!
It has been busy! , , oh my!

Kali, Kindergarten teacher from FL joining in on tonight.
Q1: What does your school/district typically do for in-service and start of year training
especially since is of glamping! Don't know if she will check in :)
Hi! I'm Colleen - sped inclusion teacher from TN joining in!
Hey Glad I can make it tonight. 1st grade teacher in MHK. Tech lead @ my school as well.
Hi Julie Burroughs here, VP & CoFounder consulting co in Brandon, FL
she beat me by about 10 seconds!
A1: Typically, a small keynote speaker (if the budget allows) then breakout rooms run by district teachers.
Hello all Greg from Chattanooga here.
A1: The last two schools I was at usually didn't make it easy to put training on the schedule
https://t.co/cIB4P39xQ4
Q1: What does your school/district typically do for in-service and start of year training
Sharon! and I were just talking about how much we miss you.
Longgggggg meeting and then a bunch of different ice breakers updates on mandates and prep for new initiatives
A1: 3 pre-service days...usually 1 outside training then Dept Head times.
A1: We've got about a week of meetings. Some is tech training (new LMS this year), but most is faculty business.
It usually falls to the end of the priority list, depending on other new initiatives
A1 First day convocation with everyone from district
A1 this yr was exception to rule and intro'd new ideas-Hard adjustment but trooper Ts worked hard today https://t.co/X8X7FJtQDZ
A1: Usually they introduce the new educators, provide time to set up classroom, and department meetings
A1 We do district pad around specific subjects. Includes self-selecting, grade level, and/or building level.
A1 Returning Ts get a day of focused PD depending on their discipline/initiatives then a day of staff meetings/peer confs.
The first few days of PD are generally building-based…I’m in central office.
A1) I try to rally the troops. This year I started a
A1 Week of meetings, mostly procedural and curriculum updates. PD is often optional or not offered.
A1b- we usually allow lots of time for in classroom prep and intro a few ideas for Ts to learn about on own time
How lllooooooonnnnnngggggggg
does the meeting usually last?
A1 CCSS determined a lot last 3yrs. Since, it has been mostly K5 & 6-12 separated. Also time in clasroom. Have 5 days before Ss
nice! That looks like fun!
1st Grade Teacher from Chicago-land area
what LMS are you moving to?
A1: My favorite this year was a rotating PD day of 4 sessions. We also did a big district wide program that was fabulous.
This looks cool! What’s happening here…looks like team building and learning!
A1: usually have a staff breakfast with faculty/dept meetings intermixed with prepping your classrooms.
That must be a huge gathering!
Great idea! anytime can get Ts working together is awesome https://t.co/imvZoAAhE9
A1) I try to rally the troops. This year I started a
Love it https://t.co/NVwCgvhxdh
A1: usually have a staff breakfast with faculty/dept meetings intermixed with prepping your classrooms.
Stay away from curriculum heavy stuff…Lay the groundwork for a successful year instead…
I like that it is done in-house. We are trying to get more of that. Local expertise.
our district tried that this year too! Choosing your own session was more engaging than the usual lecture hall format
A1: New to district, but two days whole district and one day school team day. Not sure on content yet.
Mike, you coming tomorrow?
Feeding the staff members is always a plus. https://t.co/Mj1idoOlEn
A1: usually have a staff breakfast with faculty/dept meetings intermixed with prepping your classrooms.
I've done that before. Nice camper.
Hi, everyone! I'm Dan and I'm a SPED HS Social Studies teacher from Southern NJ. Happy to be here tonight.
. scaffolding concept. How diff students need diff amts of scaffolding- borrowed from
Anyone doing a multiple day workshop on differentiated instruction?!?
Was there a theme or overriding goal to drive it all? https://t.co/bVAbzBQOhP
A1: My favorite this year was a rotating PD day of 4 sessions. We also did a big district wide program that was fabulous.
I hear lots of good things about them. Good Luck
usually helps. Gives us time to mingle with fellow Ts and catch up if we didn't see them over the summer.
When it works, it’s great. The staff facilitators need to have rapport and buy-in with the staff.
Would love to, but I just started in admin position and have a lot to get moving on.. Ill be following the # though
Hey all. RyanO here. Tech Coordinator from New York State.
In preservice, what's more valuable training, classroom time or collaboration?
live vicariously through your twitter feed haha
Q2 coming up in 1 minute…
Congrats with the new position!
A1) I always make time for my teachers to spend time in their rooms.
Words of wisdom from https://t.co/SQ7yfKmbcd
Stay away from curriculum heavy stuff…Lay the groundwork for a successful year instead…
Q2: What is the best way to motivate faculty/staff to participate more in training during in-service?
I prefer training to take place at some other time. Ts heads are spinning with urgency of prep at this point
Not sure how much I’ll be tweeting. Told I need to work on face-to-face interactions.
Love to see that. Motivation and inspiration in play here!
This is a key consideration https://t.co/BsdrcJUYpo
I prefer training to take place at some other time. Ts heads are spinning with urgency of prep at this point
A2: Get buy-in from your most masterful Ts, then have them demonstrate what they'll do w. the tech.
A2 Provide food! Make teachers a real part of the training. Take advantage of their expertise and experience.
Thanks! Going to be busy but loving the opportunity
A2 Offering options is key! People get more interested and interactive when pd is useful and relatable.
A2: Reliability, getting everyone up and moving, and simply making it as interactive as possible!
this sounds awesome! What was the best/most useful session you went to?
A1. Not enough. Our district only has one day before students come.
Had to make time tonight for .
A2: Transparency and inspiration. 1st day PD is exciting to see old friends, & the need to focus on a yearly goal is important!
A2: it needs to be relevant and interactive..not lecture with white slides and black type 🙈
Do you want to be a S in your own classroom? Even if you're training adults/Ts https://t.co/zBfKt6aA82
A2: Reliability, getting everyone up and moving, and simply making it as interactive as possible!
A local conference. Got my boy to keynote the second day!
THIS! https://t.co/mboenjwnMm
A2: Get buy-in from your most masterful Ts, then have them demonstrate what they'll do w. the tech.
. there are too many demands on teachers to expect them to be mentally present for an opening day training
A2) I encourage the teachers to learn lots so they share it with the rest of the staff.
A2 .Create it to be a concept they can dig into later- today we did breakoutEDU but that wasn't goal https://t.co/fHUpwj945z
Q2: What is the best way to motivate faculty/staff to participate more in training during in-service?
Q2 Ask what they need. Give teachers choice about their PD. Make it engaging. We differentiate for Ss, should for Ts too
A2: Have activities that build teamwork and trust between Ts that don't usually interact. https://t.co/OTNN9MCwvy
Q2: What is the best way to motivate faculty/staff to participate more in training during in-service?
A2 Make it relevant & give time to plan the implementation of something new. Ts don't have time to learn & then do on their own.
I always suggest bacon! The universal food!
Looking for a fun little giveaway for all staff for day 1. Any ideas?
A2: Make it practical, relevant, and hands-on.
A1: We are using PLCs at our schools promoting teacher leaders. I started one for some action research about flexible seating.
If only I wasn't in the middle of rebuilding my network!!!
Relationships, relationships, relationships. Lay the foundation for the year head w/ https://t.co/bhE2r90nHk
A2: Transparency and inspiration. 1st day PD is exciting to see old friends, & the need to focus on a yearly goal is important!
Give them tools they can use in their classroom tomorrow. Make the class meaningful with tools. Not one size fits all
A2 Looking to bring the best out of our staff during trainings this year. Model effective tech practices.
A2: Involving your faculty in the planning process, easy way to get them engaged.
Yes! We often do a modified Edcamp experience for Ts - voice and choice https://t.co/PrCvYzZNfc
Q2 Ask what they need. Give teachers choice about their PD. Make it engaging. We differentiate for Ss, should for Ts too
Food always persuades me!
A2: Give Ts a take-away, something useful they can go back and implement right away
Q2 Give teachers voice and choice...akin to how students engage when teachers give them same.
Q2 A2 One of the best ways is to survey the staff and see what topics interest them.
A2: Our district PD was mostly teacher led. I enjoy learning from colleagues who know their stuff!
Reading your Keynote/PowerPoint slides = BIGGEST No-No.
Depends on the training and how it is presented - agree detailed workshop too much - but overview and expectations ok
A2: In house experts. Make it active. Why do we lecture teachers but are advised to not lecture students?
Interactivity among staff members! YES! We’ll be asking the same of our students in the classroom. https://t.co/2RuceCq0Lm
A2: it needs to be relevant and interactive..not lecture with white slides and black type 🙈
. I agree, with reservation. But you have to hook them somewhere and sometime!
Books? Gift certificate? Software licenses?
In learning anything, if I don't take it & use right away, I tend to forget it https://t.co/YZfxTrrAm0
A2: Give Ts a take-away, something useful they can go back and implement right away
Yes sharing is essential for practicality!
Your social network? Lemme know if you find anyone good.
Awe Man!!! Wish I could be there also. I just started. Prep for Sept.
I know did a small scale one today.
unfortunately my actual network - new switches - and then admin retreat for me.
A2 Time permitting, it really does need Ts to be able to direct or at least voice what they want to learn to start off the yr.
. Pokestops on concert and vote nights too!
A2 whatever it is, it must be meaningful to them, something of their interest, something they value otherwise a waste of time
. Make sure to save it until the end for added enjoyment!
A2: Lots of talk of meaningful education. Is this something we’ve all seen over the last 5 years?
. I'm going to blog about it soon!
Anyone else have any ideas to share? https://t.co/kVqODbejdA
Looking for a fun little giveaway for all staff for day 1. Any ideas?
. make it.opt in, don't force. Recipe for resentment, especially if it's just acquisitional
A2: gotta have a well planned PD session. Lots of discussion about implementation ideas. Can't just focus on content
At least you get to be a part of the admin retreat! How many are?
Q1 A1 Food and team building activities always started the teacher training
Giveaways?! Chocolate...Edu books...EdTech toys
agree, just not opening day. Do the rah-rah speech then let them set their spaces for kids. can wait
just saw your profile - love the Nasa ambassador stuff - is that a special program? How do you join?
solar calculators. Aren't they still hot
Q3 coming up in 1 minute…
Facilitators would do well to electronically post notes from PD, like PodCast show notes! https://t.co/z1WnfJmihf
In learning anything, if I don't take it & use right away, I tend to forget it https://t.co/YZfxTrrAm0
A2: Give Ts a take-away, something useful they can go back and implement right away
A2: Relevance is key. Interactive learning is also a key aspect. And use the resources available to you. The pros in the bldg.
previous admin had specialized parking and lotto-ed a winner for the 1st month of school
Q3: Do you do in service with in-house or external talent? Which works better?
Christmas in August? I just got a 10Gig and a multigig switch Fun!
you could give away books by Sharon
I always try to share out my presentation. made that much easier for me this year
A3 Usually combination. Day one in house... day 2 IU usually involved
Great perspective on training and in-service and how to keep teachers involved https://t.co/tmZPgN18Hg
easiest question ever - simply by respecting our time and having meaningful, PD - that's all it takes
A3: a balance of outside experts and in house talent is key...have to gauge willingness of staff to accept I house knowledge
A3 mostly in house- is value in both. I think introing new curriculum changes come better from external https://t.co/1RgIqZPp6v
Q3: Do you do in service with in-house or external talent? Which works better?
A3: I think having some outside talent helps Ts pay attention. Sounds like my kid.. listens to Ts but not us!
Serious envy here. Enjoy!
A3: Combination. In-house are more well-recieved because they can speak on the specificity of the school/district community
A3 Has been external. This yr 1st in house w Reading in Content Area. Excited. Will leave w products so better I hope
A3 I prefer in house. Outsiders aren't as aware of our county's expectations/guidelines/limitations https://t.co/EAayzlS1OK
Q3: Do you do in service with in-house or external talent? Which works better?
Yes! not included, decisions r made, require tech.
A3 we do both, external works well if it is planned & aligned to the needs of staff, hard for "outsider" to know where staff is
In a few months, you can give away my book!
anyone wanting to giveaway my book at preservice should message me
It has auto iscsi detection and prioritization too!
We do a combination. I like inside staff leaders bc they are available every day to help. They also understand culture.
A3: Ex talent is GREAT, but $$$. In-house promotes peer resources, validates learning, & creates buy-in https://t.co/DlJ1cV1jPV
Q3: Do you do in service with in-house or external talent? Which works better?
If outside, having same person for 3yrs helped that w CCSS. Can't shotgun PD speakers if it's going to last
A3: Mostly in-house. Outside trainers often grate against our (Quaker) school culture. We resist salesperson-ish prezos.
Q3 A3 I've enjoyed it done both in-house and with outside trainers. I've seen good and bad in both.
does it right - tech has been involved at Admin level since before me
Nathan, are you going to read my book?
A3 Depends on the topic. Usually it's a combination.
A3: I've been apart of both. I find that each type is worthwhile.
A3: In house. Outside is handled by send ing a few staff out to workshops and they report back. Can focus on interest areas.
How about make a Twitter chat part of the experience? Even start a school or district #
I don’t mind bringing in outsiders if it’ll promote sustainable change.
Amen. You really have to stick with something to see progress.
Now you're just bragging!...and torturing me! :-)
A3: depends on the budget/topic. A few years ago we had Flip Flippin come talk. This year I believe is in-house.
Was going to ask when it was released.Need 2ensure U let me know
A3: Q3: In-house talent builds moral and confidence across the board.
A3 This is a design question and contextual. The answer is "it depends". What's the intent? https://t.co/X1C9D2NEm0
Q3: Do you do in service with in-house or external talent? Which works better?
Feel Better, no servers yet... :-(
Or is it just air from the same room, CO2 removed, and freshened up a little?
Great idea here! Even starting with a “What is Twitter” course. So valuable. https://t.co/PhdAb47n4w
How about make a Twitter chat part of the experience? Even start a school or district #
Ducking out to watch Chris Jericho. Thanks for a fun 1/2 chat.
I agree it depends Found that in-house works best but attending tchrs can be harsh w/in-house presenters.
I agree here…Always explain the “whys”. Be as transparent as possible
Q4: Do you do targeted trianing for inservice, or one-size fits all? Which works better?
When we finally , I want to teach that to our Ts. I've thrown stuff out & have gotten a few.
need and purpose will define external vs internal
Cool! Will have to make sure I get it signed by you!
A4: Targeted ...... Differentiated...
A4 target or one-size fits all with small groups and work the groups https://t.co/hPpEMCqnpX
Q4: Do you do targeted trianing for inservice, or one-size fits all? Which works better?
session on Engage from was great. Management of student devices
A4) Targeted!! My district even did some EdCamp style sessions. I even offered the rule of 2 feet in my session.
A4 We mainly do targeted. One size fits all usually leaves good percentage not interested.
A4 Again it depends on whether there's a district wide initiative or mandate that needs addressing or not.
A4 mostly one size fits all, but there have been some break out sessions occurring more frequently the last couple of years
A4: Targeted training is most effective. Deficiencies and strengths can more carefully be understood.
Got to keep it relevant https://t.co/r45qdg0Jlu
A4 We mainly do targeted. One size fits all usually leaves good percentage not interested.
Hi ! Susan Bearden, co-moderator, dropping in late tonight :)
A4 one size universally sucks for training. https://t.co/qEzDZyTnfv
Q4: Do you do targeted trianing for inservice, or one-size fits all? Which works better?
A4: We tend to do one-size, but with lots of offers for follow-up help as needed. I imagine something more targeted is better.
A4. At r school we ask Ts what their professional goals r & what their focus is, we then group Ts together & provide targeted PD
A4 If you do 1-size, there needs to be a targeted portion for depts at HS level. Have to collaborate & personalize 1-size
A4) 1 size fits all is good for team togetherness. Targeted makes indiv learning more relevant.
All generalizations are false..including this one, LOL
Too many Ts at too many different levels.
Everyone loves ice cream... or some ice pops :)
Q4 coming up in 1 minute…
This is great! Curious…do they record their goals, and refer to them later in the year? Validation of progress?
what about sherbet push pops
A1: Inservice training began in June for K-2 teachers to complete hours & it's based on district needs - Guided reading
This is a leader that gets it https://t.co/hGbBNm2IDS
A4) Targeted!! My district even did some EdCamp style sessions. I even offered the rule of 2 feet in my session.
I loved every minute of it! 100% teacher engagement
👋🏽
Shabana Jameel
EduConsultant
Just lurking. 😬🍎 Sort of.
A2: small door prizes from drawing raffle tickets, chocolate, and/or snacks https://t.co/j61BSxQjX3
Q2: What is the best way to motivate faculty/staff to participate more in training during in-service?
A4) I'd welcome examples of when one-size has worked well..topic and delivery/execution.
A4: typically a hybrid approach. But leaning more towards
. you rock my socks Greg!
I just got a few switches to replace failed ones from storms
https://t.co/84dmN1bfj0
their focus usually is long term & will meet during "school time" several times a year and then time is spent at staff mtgs
Glad to hear that. Creat goals, and experiences that focus on specific competencies. The only way to improve!
How do you utilize the piñata? https://t.co/j61BSxQjX3
Q2: What is the best way to motivate faculty/staff to participate more in training during in-service?
Q5:What is the best way to motivate faculty/staff to participate more in training during in-service?
Does one-size all PD ever really work well?
Some schools only use in house regardless of topic - curious how people feel about that and how it works
Never fun to replace in that situation...
Other schools bring in lots of named speakers, but that can be overwhelming - just wondering about preferences
A5: Make it relevant to their needs! Hands on, not sit and get!
A5 figure out why they aren't participating. Often we need to see what their real needs are. https://t.co/D3wqAD5DFS
Q5:What is the best way to motivate faculty/staff to participate more in training during in-service?
A5: Try permeating the entire school culture with a passionate and authentic mission to change the world. That'll do it.
Seat time does not determine competency https://t.co/edUYHVCFpp
A5: Make it relevant to their needs! Hands on, not sit and get!
Assess inside the training. Then hand out mini awards during training for improvement/top performers
Q5 coming up in 1 minute…
A5: Make it interactive? 😁😂
🙊
Unpacking of CCSS K-12. Lead us through choosing of priority standards & alignment. Facilitated discussion of 300+
I tend to agree, but sometimes due to constraints it is better than nothing
. sure, we all need to work within our constraints
How about a mix based on in-house expertise and teacher needs?
A5: Positive reinforcement! https://t.co/FYE0yGXyUn
Q5:What is the best way to motivate faculty/staff to participate more in training during in-service?
A5; let staff meet PD where it is and don't judge engagement if you control its creation
A5 Have it be something that to inspire and energize them whether it's something they've asked for training or a good surprise
So true! For students and teachers alike!
Wow, you are good!! https://t.co/l4Bb2eu6En
A5; let staff meet PD where it is and don't judge engagement if you control its creation
We have chosen to bring in motivational speaker in Oct inservice. Has worked well. Sch is calmer by then.
A5: Weekly PowerPD Bites. 15 minutes, one day per week prior to school. All staff participate
A5; give staff time to process PD but also don't plan PD without relevancy
A5: remind them why they are there. Show constant encouragement and celebrate victories.
Get them outside comfort zones
Call on people to answer questions
Have them move around
Self select into groups
A3: seen campus level done with in-house if relevant topics; external talent if district mandates https://t.co/AT1ocpmUMe
Q3: Do you do in service with in-house or external talent? Which works better?
A5 Make all PD Edcamp style. Intrinsic motivation is very powerful.
Celebrate, , Encouragement, It's OK to fail that's part of learning https://t.co/81xgXkaJEa
A5: remind them why they are there. Show constant encouragement and celebrate victories.
A5) Let them choose what they want to learn. From an EdCamp junkie, I love sessions.
In CA:
You choose which session: Beg/Middle/Advanced.
Mostly EdTech, but Strategies Sessions, too.
A5) Clear expectations set for Ts learning, then accountability follow-up. Recognition for well done work based on PD
A3: We had our 1st Dist PD this year using our own experts. It was epic! I felt valued & the PD offered was varied/interesting.
It would have to be a Strategy Session where the 🗣is an expert who can differentiate: One-Size for ALL
ClassRMs. 😬
Again, this all depends on the need and purpose of the PD https://t.co/pGdq7KZzEW
How about a mix based on in-house expertise and teacher needs?
Love the ingenuity of EdCamp styles; simple & easy what is the "rule of 2 feet"? https://t.co/Yk5Sq2TT8a
A4) Targeted!! My district even did some EdCamp style sessions. I even offered the rule of 2 feet in my session.
I would love to get to this point. Like Ts, admin fear lack of control. We're getting closer though.
A5: Prizes/swag. I am an introvert but offer me a shirt & I'll answer a question. :)
Q6 coming up in 1 minute…
Agreed. I see a lack of follow-through and recognition when PD is applied or collaboration is continued
Give Ts a choice and a voice, when they feel they are heard then more willing to participate
IMO, teacher centered is key. Determine needs then decide in-house or outside "experts."
But you need to have a plan to adjust to weather and other events to pick parks - not just arrive
Yes! :oD https://t.co/QZiSVQMzxp
A5: Prizes/swag. I am an introvert but offer me a shirt & I'll answer a question. :)
Also a Curriculum expert = One-Size fits ALL PD. As long as all Ts use the same curriculum.😬🍎🙂
Rule of 2-feet... if you don't like the session you are in use your 2 feet to go to another session.
It's always great to be energized at the beginning of the year like this. https://t.co/K5U2MQGXFF
A5: remind them why they are there. Show constant encouragement and celebrate victories.
Go beyond choice and buy-in. Move to co-creation and ownership https://t.co/5a25aN6224
Give Ts a choice and a voice, when they feel they are heard then more willing to participate
i'm a big fan of webinars!
Not going to lie, equipping Ts through PD is one of the most rewarding parts of my job! I love it so much!!
A5 "do with" rather than "do to" when it comes to professional development
Q6: If you could have one topice/trainer/presenter for in-service this year - who would it be?
A4: Usually, ours is 1 size fits all. But that can really make for a long day.
. yep, and that belief changes the entire design and approach to PD, all PD, not just
A6 Would love to hear speak
A6: I was really moved by his motivational keynote this year
has been to our district & would always be on the top of my list. If someone new, or
meh. Implies a lot to have to direct/train on day one. Says more about manager than attendees
A6 is pretty awesome motivational speaker
A6 Speaker? Temple Grandin - inspiring, common sense filled and straightforward and hope-filled!
How about Adam Savage ? Saw him on stage. He is awesome!
Thank you, friends, for a great chat tonight! Hope to see you tonight for .
A6: would love to have or come talk to our school.
. and I LOVE when principals attend - I know the box is about to bust open with openmindset!
I see training as much as setting tone for year - which can be day one - as the details - which come later
A6: T's want PD's that result in "make & take"; take EdCamps & provide materials l; release the control https://t.co/fTfHMktmKB
Q6: If you could have one topice/trainer/presenter for in-service this year - who would it be?
I love this! As introvert its really hard 4me to get out of the chair in front of people & walk out https://t.co/hXP36PjxwH
Rule of 2-feet... if you don't like the session you are in use your 2 feet to go to another session.
A6: would love to have come in as well!
I got to meet her a few months ago - so inspiring :)
I am just hoping I make the NJ list :)
A6 would be my choice. He inspires everyone to be special for all kids and have educators show their passion
A6: Whoever can🗣speak to the of the latest🆒🆕 in the District or School site.
A6: If I could only have one, it would be Kristina Smekens https://t.co/Cs02ApC1ET
Q6: If you could have one topice/trainer/presenter for in-service this year - who would it be?
Going to do some share sessions once a week for 30 minutes this year. See how it goes.
Thanks for joining this week’s ! Don’t forget to follow your new connections from tonight!
A6 Community build-school or not-where teachers could bring what they know well and/or try out a new skill. Hands on/minds on.
A6b A self indulgent topic: The tech dept wants to help! Invite them in & they will work with you. They don't just fix computers
Keep pushing the limits! https://t.co/ibNPd7keDz
Thank you, friends, for a great chat tonight! Hope to see you tonight for .
from my standpoint, the tone is, "I don't trust you."
and watch the twitter backchannel if available to see where to run to!
Alan November, Bryce Hall, Jim Sarto, Todd Race
He was at in Montana in June & was awesome. I would 2nd that.
