Should doctors be required to chance what type of medicine they practice every few years?
required - no, encouraged, yes. Learning from mistakes and building good programs requires consistency
As a former elem principal, I say yes elem Ts should periodically change grade levels. Helps w/ PLCs & spreading lrng & innovation
IT’s time for Topic: Should teachers be required to change their subjects or grade levels periodically? Why or why not?
That was the EXACT response I was just typing in! Totally agree.
Tennessee Dad Reports on National Charter School Convention: “We Are at War with Public Schools!” https://t.co/jMzxk7A8CJ
While many fear change, change can be good to change status quo, spark new lrng, & infuse ideas across a system.
"Forced" is never a good thing. I change my job every 4 years, but it's my choice.
I agree that Ts shouldn't be forced, but encouraged- some need more encouragement than others! https://t.co/BrhTBus4Np
"Forced" is never a good thing. I change my job every 4 years, but it's my choice.
NOW join Topic: Should teachers be required to change their subjects or grade levels periodically? Why or why not?
When teachers, especially elementary, change grade levels, it helps them become exponentially better. Encouraged not required.
Right on Judi... Indeed, forced is never good...
Being certified in an area means you may teach any subject in that area. Changing thinngs up may keep tchrs fresh.
cross-pollination would be good, but to force it would negatively impact school climate
I agree. Good leaders help people prepare for change like this, for the good of many.
I feel that a grade level change could have a positive impact on a teacher every few years.
Thanks Amy... please elaborate about what 'encouragement' might be needed...
Q1 I think that it can be "scary," but if the right cohort, tools and admins/mentors are available it can be a great change! :)

I started out that way as well for the same reasons almost 50 years ago. It will settle in.
See benefits, especially to spread enthusiasm & best practice.Yet, when I see good math Ts, I never want them to stop teaching math
How to build your resilience, lower your stress and become more balanced and effective every day https://t.co/TP0yPpObtg
Some Ts may not believe they have something to share w/ another team. Pos. encouragement about Ts strengths helps.
Just because I'm certified to teach mathematics doesn't mean that i must teach the same 'problem' year after year...
. if there is no growth or a decline in performance then yes. Change = good. Get out of a rut. Discover/master new things.
Imagine teaching the very same subject over a 30-40 year career. I see more drawbacks than advantages.
Taught where all Ts were considered reading Ts. Even though I am math certified, I had a reading class. Scary but learned SO much
some certification are specific while others are broad ... I am a 6-12 Social Studies some may opt just for history
ha, ha... cross-pollination... YES!
If elementary Ts move up one grade only, we could risk a Feeny scenario!
Leaders matter, but so does self-responsibility...
agreed. As the music educator, my grade level and subject have been changed multiple times. It can be scary.
Be cautious of COMFORT and COMPLACENCY.
Effective teachers are always looking for new ideas to enhance student learning. Why force them to change what is working?
Yes, but that would be history 6-12. That is 7 different levels of History.
If Ts change grade level/subject area too often, schools/students can miss out on the Ts' most effective years of flow & mastery.
Is there specific enough research on outcomes for Ts moving?
You laugh, but it's an important reality of switching teams around.
I see you in the . Great profile picture. I am now following.
Q1: I've taught grades K-9 and the change has made me versatile and empathetic to what is going on for Ts & Ss at each level.
At some point Ts are even bored with their content. Time for change.
If a teacher (or administrator) feels like a change may be for the good, then it could be a great idea.
Teachers should be encouraged to progress with the times in education, even if teaching the same subject. https://t.co/A7FwslZs4W
Just because I'm certified to teach mathematics doesn't mean that i must teach the same 'problem' year after year...
Thanks Nancye... makes so much sense.
IN PROGRESS Topic: Should teachers be required to change their subjects or grade levels periodically? Why or why not?
Very interesting topic! We require students to be open to change, taking chances, learning and growing... it may help teachers also
A big change starts small…
I agree that change periodically is good for all. Keeps everyone fresh.
yes... so how to determine? When is optimal?

10 Apps That Every Teacher Needs to Usehttp://www.myassignmenthelp.net/blog/10-apps-that-every-teacher-needs-to-use/
. Math T for 30 yrs.My motto has always been Why NOT reinvent the wheel.I hope living by that has helped my S https://t.co/2zYjVrn5UY
Imagine teaching the very same subject over a 30-40 year career. I see more drawbacks than advantages.
I don't think there can be a set "time" for every single teacher - they change and grow differently
... my laugh is for use of term 'cross pollination' ... typically applies to plants...
I think you make a great point for "supported" (or even encouraged) instead of "required." https://t.co/VtN2uYDxyv
At some point Ts are even bored with their content. Time for change.
How can teaching the same course over several years not lead to a course of complacency through repetition. invigoration is needed.
There is a possibility that too much changing (of grade/subject) makes a T less content-knowledgeable or scattered.
not really ... USHistory is only taught in 8th and 11th grade ... and most don't like to go MS to HS
there is certainly a redundancy to teaching the same subject/grade level for 20+ years.
I think it's a great visual and description of the possibilities!
But some teachers do continue to hone and refresh their teaching methods, skills, and techniques... it depends on them
is on to something here. Change based on ? Of whom?
also need to look at the difference between MS - HS ... just bcuz your certified doesn't make you effective
And... and education certainly needs a better wheel.
Sometimes a new team member on a team can invigorate Ts who have not changed. https://t.co/1Q9F8xZodg
How can teaching the same course over several years not lead to a course of complacency through repetition. invigoration is needed.
Are you thinking of teachers creating portfolios to show growth and continued accomplishment?
- Would you encourage change if your district bases your pay on your subject and/or grade level?
Hi Michelle... sho how long to become stale? What to do to refresh?
yes, in my experience, it does take a few years at any level/subject to really master the content and delivery.
It's a reality leaders need to be aware of if they have policies about switching people often.
I think as educators we are always asking kids to take risks. Overcome fears. Teachers need to do the same. Branch out.
Invigoration comes from teaching different students (and methods) every year, even if the content is the same.
. Who should make that determination whether or not a teacher is maintaining relevancy and staying vibrant and fresh.
Or hosting a new student teacher/co-teacher who is open to both trying new things and the original teacher's way
Any good suggestions for read aloud that stress ?
Simple truth, if you must think about changing then it is past time to make a change.
so now we move into professional development opportunity territory. Institution supported.
Changing of grades/subjects would also need district financial support (supplies, pd, etc.)
indeed, and makes me smile (buzz, buzz like a bee)
CHANGE is a good friend of learning.
And a school-wide mentality of teachers learning from and teaching each other/sharing resources/observing/checking in
That's a whole other issue, yet demandingly important to address if applicable!
There is a difference between teaching the same subject and teaching the same WAY for 30 yrs.
can be invigorated by going deeper, broader as well as shifting...
I think it needs to come from conversations between teachers, among teachers, and between administration and teachers
Sometimes work is a lot of work.
Part of a much larger school-wide conversation of EVERYONE being a learner and a leader for what's best for Ss and Ts
It's common sense to change when it makes sense to change...
True 21st century schools are looking for well-rounded Ts. It's not just bout mastery anymore. It's innovation.
I would add that if it wasn't a "lot of work" - children are the ones that lose out (as do Ts with room to grow!)
Like a river, you never step into the same pedagogy twice. Teaching is science, art, and psychology.
Q1: I've wondered if admins should do the same- what would impact be on leadership?
And for sure the students sitting in front of you change dramatically, so reaching them must also!
it makes sense to change when it makes sense to change...
I think the change can be optional, recommended, or required even. It all depends. Driven by what's best for students
. I've not found that to be the case. Many of the mst egregious cases of "Poor Teaching" hve come frm those who stayed too long.
4 ways on how athletic competition should be both an extension of the classroom and an educational activity. https://t.co/asr1FpdMhD
If admin moved to different level of school? (elem --> middle --> high) or level of admin? (A.P. --> Princ --> Dist)
depends on the level ... in MS/HS you have to know your content ...
Thanks Hilary... and, sometimes a teacher must go deeper in order to branch out...not always about moving on.
Teachrs need a when changing subj/grade levels. Challenges & opportunities to stretch & grow are good.
If teaching to testing, change can be tough.
poke bee hive here, but makes sense to WHOM? Perspective and importance.
I would think ALL primary teachers would argue - you NEED to know content there, too - reading/math = hard!
How do we define "21st Century Schools" and "well-rounded" teachers? Do these qualities intersect someplace? https://t.co/0vTvfz3uNN
True 21st century schools are looking for well-rounded Ts. It's not just bout mastery anymore. It's innovation.

Well said...keen insight Margie -->
Ss need to get used to change as once u finish school & start work, u have 2b adaptable. Good for Ss 2c Ts as adaptable
I agree but those ideal conversations have no place or time to be conducted in our current system of education.
I agree. That's where the administrator needs to step in. Although it should be prevented by the teacher long before.
And admin should help facilitate this with shared preps (that may rotate) and supported observation times!
I was thinking role (classroom teacher, admin dean) but level is an interesting thought as well.
Cool idea... have you tried? How's it work? What impact?
changes in leadership can be refreshing to everyone
The formal evaluation system in Chicago has mandated they take place twice a year - great admins do them more often
What would we tell learners about learning new content/new grade levels?
Part of a teacher's professionalism is constant self-evaluation through reflection and student feedback.
So... this all makes so much sense... why so difficult to do?
Definitely bringing experience from the elementary level to high school level offers new perspective & new challenges!
co-teaching is a great strategy for sharing ideas and bringin manageable change
What we teach is not who we are…
Yes ... every level is important, but is a huge difference between teaching reading to 1st gr & AP US History
IF mandated, admin should develop a plan (cycle) so that all Ts get equitable changes, then communicate clearly said plan.
Recent research shows continued teacher growth all career. Identifies high quality coaching to prompt it. https://t.co/XZuKv0siJc
yes... many permutations of same concept.
I agree-it's not always about the money! It is, however, always about what makes better headlines eg vilifying teachers
Benefits to change- deepens understanding of student learning/content across grades. Hurdle- takes time to learn
We've got to capitalize on instructional variety that's available. Great teachers are eager to play with pedagogy.
. Evals have become a list of check-off boxes & standardized test results. Admins are overwhelmed. Little time for convo
TEACHING is a good way to learn something.
Right, but I think we're discussing that APUSH teacher also considering World History once in a while
Change is good ... some teachers need to be forced out of their comfort zones so growth can happen.
Mark I think that has to be based upon s/w. Much like we work to place Ss in classes. Data, discussion
And other classes in the Hist/Geog. range to keep methods/techniques/approaches fresh
Licensure/certification=tricky. Pre-k thru 5 bldg, Early Childhood can only teach Pre-k through 2.
It works well - added insight & different perspective. Impact - cool new projects & activities for students. https://t.co/NH0mOJ3fKO
Cool idea... have you tried? How's it work? What impact?
Y'all following each other?
From your mouth to God's ear my friend. Many do, but I would like to say most and I can't.
It truly depends on the admin, the admin staff, and what gets priority. Focusing on growing teachers =best results for Ss
we need to balance decision making ... if a teacher is rocking the subject matter why force them to move?
help Michelle, ... what is s/w ???
Time for creativity is key. Creative pedagogy explores what's possible.
well is change ever better?
Totally in agreement, it's not about forcing anything. It's about finding what works best for T and S growth!
That's why I'm in ed tech now! Times they were a'changin'
so a change of underwear, weather and class assignments are good things, correct?
Agree that elem reading strategies are more transferable than deep knowledge of MS/HS SS content.
Along this line, what if there is a disconnect between the T who thinks they're a rockstar and Ss growth?
Good pt. And Parents & Ss look forward to getting to be in Ts class next yr because they are doing such a great job.
. For the most part I agree, but what if there is another academic area that needs rocking & no one there is doing it?
- Correct! Wouldn't we do the same for our Ss? Personalized Learning/Personalized Teaching. https://t.co/iFneTIlZ7I
we need to balance decision making ... if a teacher is rocking the subject matter why force them to move?
YES. Change for the sake of change not so great. I like clichés. "If it ain't broke"
... yikes, that would require peeps to communicate, collaborate, and solve problems. Is that even permitted?
Has anyone else found that some teachers literally "identify" themselves with one particular subject or grade level?
great pt on the disconnect. Again, who decides what works and doesn't?
I read an article about a school where admins changed leadership responsibilities every 2 yrs- created a sustainable structure

Hey - Kim from Louisville here! Jumping into for awhile. I teach high school business classes.
. then need coaching, PD, capacity built. Don't just leave hole where rockstar was https://t.co/KcwgxHHtad
. For the most part I agree, but what if there is another academic area that needs rocking & no one there is doing it?
Moving can be beneficial, but we must understand there is a huge difference between MS - HS ... takes special crazy to do MS
Too many do which is one factor in prompting this question.
Ditto. Where's the research on this?
Football is totally not my game, but doesn't LeBron bring up the ball sometimes?
stability and stasis are illusions... even in education ... ... everything is changing all the time.
Just joining - Do Ts get adequate prep time when they change subjects/classes? If so, perhaps a change of 'scenery' can be good.
I think many times these teachers become instructional coaches
but if it ain't broke...my old Commodore might work, but a new tablet might work better. Not just tech, though.
also great opportunity for internal PLCs and mentoring relationships :)
Change is dependent on attitude ... sometimes change makes you pick up your toys and go to a new sandbox.
... option to consider... one teacher, a group of students for a life of learning..
It depends on admin, school, & circumstances. How much time would be "adequate" is also hard to define broadly.
Looking for some great reads for school administrators... any recommendations? cc
So true. (Coming from someone who IS that special kind of crazy. Loves teaching MS!) https://t.co/v7eI5G7wqJ
Moving can be beneficial, but we must understand there is a huge difference between MS - HS ... takes special crazy to do MS
That would be the ultimate change and that may not be a bad thing.
and sometimes the cat makes the sandbox unfit for human use..
True enough, - didn't mean to be so broad. Just concerned that there's never enough prep time. https://t.co/kWfGX4PtSL
It depends on admin, school, & circumstances. How much time would be "adequate" is also hard to define broadly.
Change can also weaken the impact of district investments in Ts, technology. Possibility of strengthening, however, too
no shortage of research... huge shortage of common sense.
That's what i've found too. I am now following btw.
thanks Susan... so true...
Unfortunately, overconfidence in the learning process is a stumbling block not only for students but also for teachers.
do you think that is how they identify themselves or how others identity them?
There are too many schools in our system that can't support Coaches and PLC's. Many are unaware

It's my goal to eventually teach most electives in our business department at least once. Change is good
There always seems to be that disconnect between research and praxis. Implementers are hard to find
some are not as flexible, but that doesn't make them any less effective.
Wow - but what about students that didn't get off to a great personality start?
Great point. Work w many schools who can't make work bc they skip PD, coaching, PLC/PLN
Some Ts also feel pressured to be "yes" men/women and take on more than is feasible. Spread too thin and can't give 100%
I was SS Dept chair so the experience helps ...
They may never get a "reset" with the same teacher all 12+ years...
Very effective strategy--Don't fear the silence, embrace it!
Time is the key. But as the saying goes, if you really want to do something, you'll find a way. If you don't, you'll find an excuse.
Thank you , glad you are enjoying it https://t.co/hIZD0KYFfa

Some Ts also feel pressured to be "yes" men/women and take on more than is feasible. Spread too thin and can't give 100%
Sure! They're probably pulling in new resources and learning from their peers (both in and out of school) all the time
well, perhaps folks need to learn how to work things out...
I think it's less of the change in grade level/content area and more just in recognizing that growth is good
... perhaps a challenge to be met by the group?
It was an honor & delight to work w those Ss. Wouldn't trade MS teaching years for anything https://t.co/rkWznxcs3H

Are you saying kids may learn in spite of their schools?
And I do mean growth... not necessarily "change" - but learning, trying, putting oneself out there
... many spiritual tradition the 'student finds the teacher...'
We used to do a small version of that with looping
I myself am a music teacher, and teaching a different grade level next year. I'm okay with that.
Wow, that's an impressive feat, and I'd imagine a good challenge. Did you ever loop with a group of students?
Yes, but parents the sticky issue here. Kids will take on Ps attitude of Ts
Amen! Change driven by a desire to grow is the best change.
One of my coworkers loved it- taught a multi grade classroom
the kids I taught in 7th grade I taught again when I moved to 9th and 11th ... not a loop, but close
Thanks bunches for bringing your A-game to You teach me lots!

If they can't solve it no one can. ->
Knowing and admitting to it is a first step towards a fresh start. Consider those who don't acknowledge this reality,
They can & do. Yet equitable edu demands provide more-- for teachers & students!
I am fortunate .. had a good relationship with kids ... would suck if I did not.
Thanks Meredith for bringing your very bet to I'm learning lots from you...
Thanks Susan... for bringing your really good-stuff to today.
It's very interesting, but it would incentivize making strong family bonds, too
How rewarding that must be for those involved. Considerable benefits to looping, and it justifies the change.
Which, in the end, should be better for the students as well
3 words that Ss, Ts, everyone all need to hear: Yes you can. Why be a no person when it's more fun to be a yes person?
Agreed. Change is needed for growth but how much needs to be decided with admin based on where each individual is.
I hope this has given or will give folks an opportunity to reflect on what might be necessary Change in their own space.
