#dojochat hi my name is Lauren and I am a student in Albany New York. I have been asked to participate by my education computer professor. I have been learning a lot about gamification, ISTE standards, and other resources and tools for learning including class dojo!
A1 My students were a mix. We had to work hard to get to a #growthmindset but often times language parents used or how they "helped" with hw would be the major hurdle. #dojochat
A1: As an instructional coach I have the privilege and pleasure of working with students across the district. It’s incredible to see the influence and impact of the teachers and adults in the Ss’ lives that affect their mindset. #dojochat
A1 I have a class of 27 and a large majority of my students approach work and life with a fixed mindset. I think that a big part of it is the culture they come from and what they see in their daily life at home. #dojochat
A1: They started the year with a fixed mindset. Thanks to Class Dojo and several mini-lessons throughout the year, they now have a growth mindset! Here's something from one of my kiddos. #dojochat
Absolutely. Mindfulness is key.
A colleague of mine once thought mindfulness is the absence of thought during meditation. I helped us both learn it’s the presence of thought - the awareness of all our thoughts, feelings, actions, … #dojochat
Please do. Of course I’m sure you’ve seen the bulletin board examples. My 5th graders & I loved incorporating EdTech so we created the video together. #dojochat
I agree. I wish I had that during my childhood as well. It was challenging to always be compared to my brother and others. #GrowthMindset & #FailingForward would’ve changed me in so many ways. #dojochat
I can relate. I did not experience a lot of positive reinforcement in school growing up! I love this idea of constant feed back and using gamification to encourage children the importance of positivity and positive mental growth #dojochat
A2: It begins with our own understanding of the necessary shift in mindsets. When we understand its benefits and results, we are better at doing it for ourselves & then modeling it for our students. #dojochat
Nice! You’re really connecting the pieces there. Gamification to encourage students to keep trying. They naturally do that with games. Incorporating games in our classroom helps our students with their effort and mindset. #dojochat
A2 I think giving them language to express their feelings of frustration helps. "I don't get it... YET!" Also examples of others who have shown a #growthmindset (see lessons on https://t.co/qaQ9Yzm4kS 😉) #dojochat
I have learned that in virtual reality individuals build strong relationships with other players and do everything to reach the goal of the mission. If we could incorporate gamification into classrooms we can encourage that kind of behavior in every day lives #dojochat
Yes! If we as adults don't recognize the need for a shift in our mindsets, then how are we going to help our students? Being able to model that is so important. #dojochat
Q2 Encouraging students to set small, achievable goals in your classroom. This repetition of small wins over time will inspire a Growth Mindset. #dojochat
Technology is ever-changing and it’s ability to influence students and the skills that they can obtain from it is absolutely amazing! I can only hope that more teachers will take this approach. Teacher should also influence coding in the classroom!!! #dojochat
A2 I definitely think that modeling your own mindset shifts are key! It's okay to share some of your struggles with your Ss and show them how you tackle them. #dojochat
Absolutely, Anita. I’m a big proponent of students experiencing those “failures.” All learners need to fail. Learning doesn’t happen when we fail - learning happens when we reflect on our failure and make plans for the future. To #FailForward. #dojochat
A2: It takes a LOT of modeling. They need to see how their teacher handles difficult challenges. Your actions and words during these can help change their inner dialog. I model this during mini-lessons. ie. I model doing difficult tasks and STEM lab challenges. #dojochat
A3 We discuss fixed and growth mindset statements in mini-lessons so when when negative talk occurs we are able to point out more appropriate self-talk. #dojochat
Yes! You have to be willing to show them how to recognize their self talk and whether it is positive or negative. Then you need to teach them what to do once they start recognizing their patterns of thinking. #dojochat
A3 #dojochat I learned a strategy from @terrysmall , I refer to the students as math geniuses BEFORE they take any tests. They really respond well! This combined with the power of YET - they allow themselves space to get better.
A3 I teach resource, so with 40 mins/day I’m very limited on time. I model positive talk and help them turn negatives into positives, or just point out the positive things I see in them (esp. when they can’t see it themselves) #dojochat
A3 Continued
I also find books to be helpful. The book "Relentless Optimism" is a great book for introducing self talk, mindsets, and affirmations. #dojochat
A3: I take 2 papers. Sit in a circle, first paper I give myself a compliment and draw a :) on it, kids do the same. The second paper I say something uncomplimentary and crumble the paper, kids do same. Then compare the 2 and talk about how each paper 'feels.' #dojochat
A3 I would teach my students about the wolves inside of you battling for control, you can either feed the wolf who holds you back and makes you feel mad or you can feed the wolf who makes you feel encouraged and happy. #dojochat (hopefully this is the right direction).
A4 One of our standards happens to be Communication and Self-Reflection. I'm able to give Dojo points when I catch my Ss giving one another positive affirmations. #mrssotohearseverything#dojochat

A5 This is hard. I think they had a good support system, even if it was just one teacher, and we can all hope that we are providing that "person" for all our students ❤️ #dojochat
Q4 I would use personal experience as great way to promote positive affirmation. I would talk about when I use it and give examples of when the students could. #dojochat
