Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
🙋🏻♀️ Hey #ksedchat ! Student Teacher from Pittsburg State here. I am student teaching in a 3rd grade classroom. I can’t wait to graduate in May and have a classroom of my own.
Since we are kickin it old school tonight thought I should share what I’m listening to while chatting. My new album by the BEST Roger Miller! #ksedchat
A1: Boom! Checkout this awesome this 2nd grader from Yellowstone Elementary School in Rock Springs, Wyoming! The teachers and the memories of that school made me want to be a teacher! #ksedchat
#ksedchat this is me in 2nd grade (balloon background) and 3rd grade (gray background). I actually used these to show my students what I looked like at their age!
A2: #ksedchat so one of the most popular movies out when I was in mid-late elementary school is Space Jam... so “I believe I can fly”? Or the “space jam” song.
A2: as much as I hate to admit it... since I was in preschool for the majority of those pictures, the only thing I ever listened to was anything Barney... #ksedchat
The best mixed tape I have is @pandoramusic check out the 80s Throwback (90s comeback) list. It's great! #ksedchat Jamming to it now that the kids down.

A3: I was a doodler my whole school life. I can't focus when people talk without me doing something with it. I have to go with art supplies - mainly super sharp pencils. I would whittle the wood away with a knife and expose pure lead for 2-3 inches. #ksedchat
A3 my favorite "old school" supply was the original multi pen. These things sure were my favorite, and I love seeing students who get a new pen and like to show it off. #kickinitoldschool#ksedchat
A2: do Pokémon cards count? Because I could trade those suckers for anything that I needed. Especially the pencils from the vending machine. Plus, since my dad traveled for work, I had Japanese cards that I could trade for even more stuff! #ksedchat
A4 I remember going to the computer lab to play Oregon Trail. It was so neat because we couldn't believe that we were being encouraged to play a video game AT SCHOOL!!! #ksedchat
A4: I just remember going to a computer lab once a week- thats when I got my typing in, number munchers and Oregon trail time. We were always so excited to sit in front of those HUGE blocky computers! #ksedchat
A4: #ksedchat I loved the Apple II E’s. I became a fast typer, because during keyboard lessons I had to pass the lessons in order to earn free time on the computer... and I wanted as much free time as possible to play this!!!
A4: I got an elec. typewriter wth my graduation money. It was memorable because my momasked how I would type if the elec. went out in the dorms. I said, "How could I see to type if there were no lights?" #ksedchat
A4: palm pilots! My teacher earned a grant and for awhile my class was the only one with them. We used them to do everything from typing papers to doing math homework. Then we could “beam” our work to each other and our teacher. I remember BEGGING my parents for one #ksedchat
A4: The big "old school" technology for me was the typewriter. My high school had a computer lab but you could never get in... So we typed on electric ones. I loved the sound of the erase ribbon. #ksedchat
A4: Kid Pix, Animated story books in library! We also played this game where you ran around and wanted snow balls and do math problems- can anyone help with the name of that one? I really want to know! #ksedchat
A4: I remember “computer class” in the computer room (converted staff lounge) in elem school. Floppy discs were floppy, screens were green, and if you hit your target ‘words minute’ it was all the Number Munchers you could fit into 15 minutes on Friday. #ksedchat
Q5: Are there any teaching strategies that might be considered "old school" that you still use today or wish would make a comeback because they were effective? #ksedchat

A5. My favorite time of day was after lunch read aloud. We are seeing less and less read aloud time for students in grade 4 and up. They still need read aloud. Every. Single. Day! #ksedchat
A5: The biggest "old school" strategy is read-alouds. Many students just don't get to hear parents do voices, act surprised or even reading fluent. That instruction is so important and yet so underrated. #ksedchat
A5: there are so many things I donthat ARE still used today; ot is just called different names. Tier groups, listening centers, spelling in sand... great ideas never die. #ksedchat
A5 I still lecture, but I don't do it as frequently nor as long as my teachers did. And I infuse lots of time for the Ss to discuss Qs or ideas and do learning checks using @plickers. #ksedchat
A5: In fifth grade, after lunch my teacher would read to a novel to us for 20-30 minutes. We were allowed to doodle and draw. I think that’s why I enjoy audiobooks. #ksedchat
A5 #ksedchat The teacher I am student teaching with uses an “old school” approach regarding respect. Each student is expected to respond to an adult with either ma’am or sir. I notice a HUGE difference with our classroom management when that tends to be forgotten.
I played classic Oregon Trail with my kids when it came out on the web. My son named his characters after our family. He cried when his sister died. https://t.co/UOAQDPqf1g#ksedchat
A5: I don’t know. Its not a formal teaching strategy, but I kind of miss recess as a necessary part of the daily flow. I wouldn’t mind it in my HS. Just saying. #ksedchat
Oh, my gosh! My husband used to read "Pet the Cowdog" to our kids while I was supposed to be doing housework. I would sit outside their bedroom door and listen to him. He read with a southern drawl! #ksedchat
Thank you so much for joining #ksedchat tonight!
Guest hosts @Willmdunn, @MsLRice, and @BMcDubb1 have got some awesomeness planned for February, so be sure to come back next week!
I remember this cart! I learned to make sure you preview ALL of the movie before showing. A movie I used, I had only seen on TV, not the few movie. There was a scene that didn't need to be there! #KSEDchat
