CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
Good Morning #CatholicEdChat. Doreen from RI here. Starting work as an Adjunct Faculty Member for the Greeley Center in Chicago - on-line. Will miss setting up a classroom this August but eager to hear BTS stories of others.
A1: Official first day for @BMHSMustangs is after #LaborDay but students start with events this upcoming week with Transfer Student orientation. #catholicedchat
A1: Students are back on August 27. It's more of an orientation day with team-building activities, rather than a normal school day. Here's a picture from 2 years ago of one of the activities I do with my advisees on the 1st day back. #CatholicEdChat
New on-line class starts after Labor Day - “The Exceptional Child in Catholic School.” As my Ss are all Cath Schl Leaders, they are all returning to their own schools right about now. #CatholicEdChat
#CatholicEdChat a2.a my science lab is focused on great questions and great thinkers (Mendel, LeMaitre). Asking the right kind of questions huge in science
A2 Our school theme is Family of Faith: Guided by the Spirit. We always use the first part of the theme and we change the second part each year. #catholicedchat
I feel like my principal implied our theme is “Build on Our Momentum” in her welcome back letter. I had success in 5/6 and hope it carries into 7/8 this year #catholicedchat
A2: My class doesn’t have a theme. I like to give my students as much ownership as possible, & within that framework, me picking a theme would make the room more about me than them. No judgement on those who pick themes, though! I 💜 looking at your Hogwarts pics #CatholicEdChat
A2. Don't have a specific theme in the school-still tinkering with ideas in classroom-leaning towards Great Minds in History-some student submitted, others chosen by me- #CatholicEdChat
In my religion classes, I use the theme of pilgrimage based on Thomas Aquinas’ words (being considered for publication). In #ELA classes, quarterly themes are used based on student-centered programming. #CatholicEdChat
A2 My theme is "we are all part of our classroom" I made a video of me reading this book. I'm looking for a Bible verse to go with this. https://t.co/daTZuVBeAO#CatholicEdchat
A2 At our back to school picnic, the day before school begins, the students will do an activity that will comprise a big bulletin board showing the theme which will be up all year. #CatholicEdChat
We chose this beautiful image and theme for our diocesan schools. We shared it with principals and they loved it. We will introduce to all Ts on the 17th at the Cathedral. #CatholicEdChat
Q2 We choose a religious theme each year. This year we are using Pope Francis’ message from his Call to Holiness - Rejoice and Be Glad. We have a teacher retreat and an all school retreat on the theme. #CatholicEdChat
A2: Our certificate program has its own theme: Inclusion. Yes, it has a specific meaning in Ed, but you can take it generally as trying to offer support, welcome and participation to all. There are unique challenges when working with adults on-line. #CatholicEdChat
A2: The theme in our classroom is Be Saints! #LifeGoals The school-wide theme is focused on #GrowthMindset. So I have both in our classroom. #CatholicEdChat
Hey everyone! Joining late from StL!
We had meetings this week.
A2: Our School theme this year is based on one of our Salesian Virtues - Freedom. #CatholicEdChat
A2 #CatholicEdChat We're a Sacred Heart school, so our school themes, if you will, are the 5 Goals of a #SacredHeart education: Faith, Intellectual Values, Social Awareness, Community, Personal Growth. Extra focus is put on one goal each year.
#CatholicEdChat good morning! A2 we rotate our all school theme on a four year cycle, each year on one of our pillars. this year's pillar is faith formation and our them is "come follow me. it is the lord jesus that calls us" its from the holy cross constitutions, our founders
A1: After Labor Day! But I’ve been following along with my upcoming 6th graders’ summer work through Google Classroom. I think this will make our transition smoother in September! #CatholicEdChat
a4 #CatholicEdChat Last year did hi-lo tech portraits (that's the picture in my profile). Trying to find my directions for it! Uses comp to posterize picture of you, then you color in light areas. portraits decorate room.
#CatholicEdChat A2 our student ministers picked the theme this year, and we just had a 24 hour retreat to focus on how we will implement it in the school year. everyone gets a t-shirt with the logo, and every classroom and space has a poster with the theme.we hang banners outside
A3: I wouldn’t say that I have anything planned for week 1 that’s too far outside of what we will normally be doing. I like to set the tone for the year/launch into reading/writing right away. But I will show them a @Flipgrid of last year’s students giving advice! #catholicedchat
Well, already hosted a new principal leadership gathering and on Thursday hosted our first New Teacher in-conference. Was great. In@my new role I don’t really have a first day. #CatholicEdChat
Q4: doesn’t involve technology, but I’m going to try to sit down with each 5th grade S individually (they are the oldest Ss I have) and interview them. The goal is to empower them as leaders of the school. #CatholicEdChat
BRILLIANT using Google Classroom over the summer with Ss. Going to borrow/steal this for next summer. Thanks! Now that @Google opened up who you can add to your Google Classroom too, the possibilities have skyrocketed! #CatholicEdChat
A4 We do the "One Word" goal project the first day. Each student chooses a one word goal to focus on throughout the year. They decorate it and it is hung in the room to refer to. #catholicedchat
A2 I used to have my homeroom pick a theme song. We would use it for different things through the year. I had them in 6th grade, so they would keep their theme song through 8th grade graduation. I still think of each class when I hear those songs! #CatholicEdChat
A4. Looking to do something with ss on Animoto and Timetoast. Emphasizing that all of our paths have led to this year. Also planning on variation of Kenny Chesney's Rich and Miserable video-one goal for the year in one word. #CatholicEdChat
A3: I like to do a “Back to School Breakout.” Gets the kids moving and thinking while reviewing expectations, summer assignments, and catholic identity. @breakoutEDU#CatholicEdChat
Q4: Using Voice Thread/ Zoom so my class can see each other. Answer this: If your feelings about Inclusion were the title of a book, what would that title be?” #CatholicEdChat
#catholicedchat A4 I had my faculty do a quick STREAM Project based on the Our Father sentences. Here is Hallowed be Thy name complete with a pipe cleaner halo!
A4 As principal, my goal is to model use of technology, so our opening teacher meetings will use Google Classroom (docs and forms), Padlet, and a fun Kahoot I’m putting together. I also created a QR code building scavenger hunt for new student orientation.
My first activity will be this (picture). Research shows low % Ss will draw female scientists. Looking to see how many Ss see people like themselves as scientists, then will repeat later in year to see if their views have changed. #CatholicEdChat#Iteachscience#middleschool
A4 1st day/week I would let the kids create a “Fakebook” page where they would fill out a template/worksheet creating a profile we would post on the classroom wall. It not only helped them share about themselves, it helped me learn their names faster! Lol #CatholicEdchat
A4: First dat activity using Google Classroom to set goals for the year. And then Google Slides activity so we start building relationships. Relationships are key! #CatholicEdChat

BB #CatholicEdChat Is Amazon cheating? Hmmmmm, Nordstrom, then I will be able to get my style on and won’t have so much trouble in the morning choose my outfits.
BB. (Not a real card number.) But I have one and I earn mega points every year and spend them in @Disneyland once a year. Last year 1000pnts =$1000. Very cool. #CatholicEdChat
#CatholicEdChat one time my Ss did "paper slides" they created/printed all the slides, put them on the floor in the hallway, then walked down the hall, videoing with their device and narrating
a4 #CatholicEdChat I want to deeply align my units and assessments to the standards, so there is a story to follow.
I also want to deemphasize grades in favor of learning
A4: I want to improve by helping Ss use time better and more wisely. I want to set up better small group cohorts for me to check in with more consistently and for Ss to cheer each other on through their learning. #CatholicEdChat
Q4: Google Certification is on my list. I put together a group from school and we went through the training together this summer. Now I just need to sit down and do it. #CatholicEdChat

A4: I want to get better at conferencing. No matter what I do, I never seem to see kids as regularly as I’d like! I’d also to really embrace the restorative justice model in my class #catholicedchat
A4 Easy. Be a good steward as principal for the school I have been a part of for 16 years. AKA, not make any costly mistakes. I realize that’s not an educational goal , but it’s what’s on my mind as we go back to school. #catholicedchat
#CatholicEdChat i am starting to spend money at woodworking store on various hard woods as I learn how to make butcher block cutting boards & countertop as well as wooden toy cars
A4. Patience, Relationship Building-first time teaching in school with more than 250 students and will have my largest classes I've ever had. #CatholicEdChat
I have big plans to finally begin a formal K-8 tech curriculum. I am done with not having anything formal. So many Tech Ts without curriculum. Looking to incorporate the new #ISTE standards. Key word is “BEGIN” #CatholicEdChat
Key thing I've learned is to teach your ss the workflow-- @googleclassroom is powerful, but can also be frustrating if ss not familiar or trained to use it! #CatholicEdChat
In reply to
@sabuller, @googleclassroom, @googleclassroom
A4 There are so many things I want to learn and do! I’d like to write more, develop new online PD programs and of course always wanting to bring you all the best PD through @NCEATALK#CatholicEdchat By the way...webinars start up again after Labor Day! Stay Tuned 😎
A4 #CatholicEdChat Looking to learn more ways to "let go" and let my Ss lead their own learning. I've been getting away from "giving grades" & instead am providing more constructive feedback and want to continue that. But there can be pushback from those who want to see a grade.
Q4: Continue my personal learning of Spanish and read and reflect on how best to support and nurture Cath Schl Leaders. Also I have a big interest in flexible seating and hope to visit classrooms and speak to Ts using it. #CatholicEdChat
A4. To stick to principal only actions. Move to bigger school means others can handle decisions I used to make: boilers, bats, floor refinishing, construction projects, technology, ERATE, etc. #CatholicEdChat
Yes, changing the rules of the school-game can scare ss and parents! Communication is clutch. I'm anticipating some push-back this year on this account. #CatholicEdChat
#CatholicEdchat I always was challenged by this too. So using a timer for scheduled 1-1 time with Ss and also a “hot wall” where students would put their name on the board for a quick conference. Got to everyone
I have created “paper slides” with 8th graders in the past. It’s a great way for them to work on concise scripting and timing. Requires them to work harder on the message they want to share. #CatholicEdChat
#catholicedchat I'm going to try and use technology in an intentional way within my role as Campus Minister, which means creating creative ways to have prayer and other resources. I'm also going to use different apps for our faculty training I do on our mission. And write more.
A6: the faith of my students always inspires me/brings me closer to God. I’m hoping they continue to teach me what it’s like to have simple, pure faith #CatholicEdchat
A6:I hope Ss teach me to see all the possibilities-there is more than one way to solve a prob, form a solution, celebrate a success . . . #CatholicEdchat
there are so many good ones...#CatholicEdChat loved my time @CTDatNU and going to the various museums...Field Museum, MSI, so many to choose from! #CatholicEdChat
Hoping? What?? Barb you will most certainly be the best mentor for a 1st year teacher! She doesn’t even realize how lucky she is to have you! #CatholicEdChat
A6: Great question! Can't think of anything specific, but I do try to each lunch with the girls whenever I can and just talk about life. I often get a lot of good "mom tips." One day I walked away with a list of Bday party locations. 😃 #CatholicEdChat
Oh, good, I was scrolling back through all the #CatholicEdChat posts wondering what happened to Q5! Thought I was going a little cuckoo trying to find it!
A6. How to further empower their own learning. What do they care about? What areas in history do they most connect with and how to act on that connection. #CatholicEdChat
If you need ideas, please don't hesitate to reach out. So many great tools out there, and so flexible to use for anything - including PD. #catholicedchat
A6 #CatholicEdChat I always hope my Ss teach me to be a better teacher. I know that sounds like I'm passing on this question, but, the truth is, you don't know what you don't know -- so beyond that generalization, I really can't say what I want my Ss to teach me.
I don't blame God for miscarriages as I wouldn't blame God for turning off the sun every night if I lived thousands years ago. It is just something I don't understand in nature. Do you balme God for making the world? #CatholicEdChat
A6: This is going to seem random but it connects to my meeting theme and learning new things. Used it to start a faculty meeting this week. #CatholicEdChat Justin Timberlake: "I Like Being a Beginner" | Oprah’s Master Class | Op... https://t.co/ARx6uBbewR via @YouTube
#CatholicEdChat
I'm hoping to lead a session on Creation and Science-- a Catholic world view, informed by Ratzinger and @BishopBarron at #NCEA19 . One of my passions!
#CatholicEdChat
I'm so excited and blessed to be working with @SJSPrincipal . Everytime I think life is leading me out of the classroom, God plunks me right back into it!!
Happy New School Year!!!
