Meet and chat with colleagues about Universal Design for Learning (UDL) on Twitter! The best hour of professional learning you'll get in 30 minutes. Held the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 9-9:30PM ET.
Begin with brief intro...and share how YOU stay motivated during daily tasks...are you more intrinsically or extrinsically motivated...generally speaking? #UDLchat
I am also motivated by collaboration and group think...social rewards and ability of team to come together on behalf of the organization/group. #udlchat
A1 Perseverance and a growth mindset support students taking ownership for their own learning especially when the work is challenging and requires struggle #udlchat
A1 The best environments are designed for variability, which includes how we engage and motivate students. Persistence is something we have to teach. #udlchat
Planning very much supports my motivation. I can see where I am, where I have been, and where I am going. When my students/learners get a little lost I put them into the planning process too, they can "see" it then #udlchat
A1 I love the concept of "flow" also when thinking about how self-value and positive engagement support motivation See: https://t.co/2LxcWr8hTy#UDLChat

Positive engagement in the classroom has everything to do with motivation. I relate this to classroom relationships—teacher to student, student to student and a sense of belonging. Relationships play a huge role in motivations or learning for many students. #udlchat
I would be told to look it up in the literature....but motivation to me is that positive self-talk that encourages us to do better than our best! #UDLchat
A2 motivation for me means the fire that burns in each of us. When I think of learning environments, they have to be designed to make those fires burn bright #udlchat
A2 Self-Determination Theory by Deci and Ryan -the learner feels they have autonomy, are competent, and the learning is relevant/related https://t.co/4Kabak2Gl6#UDLChat

A3 UDL Offers flexibility and choice in the learning process. When students are actively involved in the learning process through UDL, they have “that look!” #UDLchat
A3: Ultimate goal of engagement is motivated learners
How:
Autonomy-Optimize choice.
Purpose and Relatedness-Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity.
Support Mastery and Competence-Develop self-assessment and reflection.
#UDLChat
I think the UDL guidelines act as an intentional jumpstart for students...the cables that bring the connection to the battery giving energy for learning! #UDLchat
In a few minutes...our final question (Q4) will make its way...but feel free to keep responding to any of the Q's so far! Phew! this #UDLenergy is amazing! #UDLchat
A3 When harnessed the UDL framework give students the opportunity to grow and flourish -it’s all about Design! Grit has to be taught! Students are motivated in the right environment #Udlchat
#UDLchat Intrinsic motivation - lead by example. Do you want your students to desire a sticker , a prize from the “prize box” or a boost to self confidence that will build slowly and last a lifetime?
A4: As Ts implement UDL, students learn how to learn and become experts at learning...that's EMPOWERMENT and when you feel that....you're motivated to push through challenges. EVEN as adult learners #UDLchat
A4: learners (and adult learners) have to be motivated to put themselves in the learning pit to become experts - choose difficult tasks to grow #UDLchathttps://t.co/OuqMWKujQF
A4. As Les Brown would say, you need to know what your vitamin is, or in other words what gives you energy. Helping students to figure this out is critical to becoming a self motivated, expert learner. #UDLchat
A4: Motivation drives us toward all of the expert learner traits. It's a necessary ingredient. In the land of #udl choice, don't think there is one here. We have to help our Ss experience motivation. #udlchat
A4 Motivation is key in the journey to becoming an expert learner. Expert learners are those who have found joy in learning itself. We can cultivate that joy by remembering that S’s dictate relevance and value. Our LE’s need to be homes for that joy and connection. #udlchat
We feel motivated for the new year thanks to another amazing #UDLchat with @ElizabethLStein! Join us Jan 17 for the next live chat, and keep using the hashtag to ask, answer, connect, and share.
#UDLchat Q4. Motivation is essential for achieving long term goals. Stamina in believing in your potential must be encouraged and cultivated in students and teachers alike! Not everything happens overnight.
Sliding into home base now...as this first #UDLchat of 2018 comes to a close. Remember to use hashtag along the way...so our conversations, learning, and actions never end!
A4 - the journey and opportunity to connect outside of physical limits - like tonight - thrive with your tribe - removes boundaries that limit growth. #udlchat
A3 Read how one science teacher was able to motivate her students to assess their own performance and significantly improve completion of group projects by following these specific steps of self-monitoring

A4: Motivation is what keeps someone stepping toward the goal. I often wonder what defines an acceptable level of motivation & is variable motivation okay/necessary @ times- 4 ex.-stepping away from work for the recent break-the refresh was much needed & 🔼 motivation. #udlchat
Self-value is my word of choice, too! I love building classroom communities where S's are praising their peers to amp their self-esteem. Class praisers are my favorite way to do this! They're a bit cheesy, but a little silly never hurt anyone! https://t.co/ub7pGtMx6K#UDLchat
Agreed. Taking that extra time at the beginning of the year to really set up a solid classroom community will pay dividends through the rest of the school year! Especially when they trust each other enough to give and graciously accept praise! #udlchat
