Hi all! Kurt from Bay City- 5 for 5 on days off this week. Fun for some, but I know some kids that need to get back in school!
Always fun letting kiddos know they are our Model Bobcat@
#MEMSPAchat
HI everyone. I am Cindy Blasi, a school social worker in Kansas. Thought I would jump in on your chat. Here is a picture of some kids working on feeling identification in October! #MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat - Hi everyone! I’m Andy from Van Buren Public Schools in Belleville.
My pic is with an ASD student who began to dramatically grow academically when she started using a mobile workstation. She had been stopping at mine so her teacher made her one of her own!
Q1: Secondary trauma can impact teachers as they learn about the first-hand trauma students experience. Describe one way you support teachers when they experience secondary trauma. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A1: Provide teachers the opportunity to come to you or the social worker to talk. During our PD discussions we let them know they can come to us. #MEMSPAchat . They have to know the door is open.
A1: Give teachers the chance to talk about situations they deal with and check in on them to see how they are doing. We take care of them, so they can take care of students! #MEMSPAchat
A1: Honestly the first thing I try to do is talk with them and help them process. Elementary classrooms are families and when they find out one of their own is hurting we often need to process and find out what we can control and attack that.
#MEMSPAchat
Q1: Secondary trauma can impact teachers as they learn about the first-hand trauma students experience. Describe one way you support teachers when they experience secondary trauma. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A1: You have to be there for teachers with a listening ear, shoulder to cry on, or even a hug. Sometime it means stepping in to their classroom to give them a moment to breathe. #MEMSPAchat
Q1: Secondary trauma can impact teachers as they learn about the first-hand trauma students experience. Describe one way you support teachers when they experience secondary trauma. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
Had a blast working with Carla Tantillo Philibert @PaulLiabenow at #CEC2019 on an awesome #ITeachBecause movement, and then watched my dad get his “Michigan 2019 Master Farmer Award” - just got home for #MEMSPAchat
A1: First have to make sure that I am bringing my best self to work so I can support Ts. Then, I have to be there so I need to get out of my office. Ask questions and check in with Ts frequently, especially Ts who have significant behavior challenges. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A1: We just learned of tap outs... if a teacher appears to be overwhelmed by an exerience, I (or another teacher on prep) can tap them out so they can get a little time. Not implemented yet as I am working with social worker to plan implementation #MEMSPAchat
A1: I provide a listening ear for them. I help them process their experience, normalize it as best as I can and then give them some ideas on how they can "release" the pressure. #MEMSPAchat
A1: I would give mini-lessons on it during faculty meetings and blog about new strategies for self-care when I found them!
I stayed current on Psychological First Aid so that I could help as needed.

A1 Not too long ago, I was part of a PD that focused around supporting adults with secondary trauma. My #1 take away was to support and encourage others, and let them know that they are not alone in the fight! No teachers left on an island! #MEMSPAchat
A1: Helping a teacher keep focused on the things that can be influenced is one way I’d support a teacher. Whether it is academic or social-emotional, interventions may not be a cure all but they can help! #MEMSPAchat
Q1: Secondary trauma can impact teachers as they learn about the first-hand trauma students experience. Describe one way you support teachers when they experience secondary trauma. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A1: We work together and support one another in our effort to understand and improve conditions. More social work time has just been added to help! #MEMSPAchat
Q1: Secondary trauma can impact teachers as they learn about the first-hand trauma students experience. Describe one way you support teachers when they experience secondary trauma. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A1: Perfect opportunity to listen and I always let them know we can problem solve. It is important to remind them we may not find the solution immediately. #MEMSPAchat
A1: We have a social worker who loves working with our Ss but also talks with our Ts. As deans, we also offer the opportunity for our Ts to come and talk and share what’s on their mind as they learn about Ss trauma. #MEMSPAchat
A1 Sometimes the teachers just need a safe place to talk through the experience. Provide a chance for staff to meet by covering their class. #MEMSPAchat
A1: Biggest thing that I strive to do is let teachers know that I'm there to support, whether it's giving them a break for a few minutes or just to listen to them and brainstorm ideas to help our students. #MEMSPAchat
Q1: Secondary trauma can impact teachers as they learn about the first-hand trauma students experience. Describe one way you support teachers when they experience secondary trauma. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A1: The biggest thing is to listen to what has happened and provide any support or guidance I can. Often just the time to have someone to talk with helps. #MEMSPAchat
Listening is a big one. Sometimes we just need to talk, not solve the world, but just vent, talk it out and know you can trust the person you are talking to. I think every teacher needs to know someone is supporting them too. #MEMSPAchat
Q1: Secondary trauma can impact teachers as they learn about the first-hand trauma students experience. Describe one way you support teachers when they experience secondary trauma. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU

A1. Be there for them to talk or give them a break to process. Ensure the people who are skilled in this area in my building/district are available for them. #MEMSPAchat
Q1: Secondary trauma can impact teachers as they learn about the first-hand trauma students experience. Describe one way you support teachers when they experience secondary trauma. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
I'm a social work and some day spend more time listening and supporting teachers than I do working with kids... it's a big and important part! #MEMSPAchat
A1: We just learned of tap outs... if a teacher appears to be overwhelmed by an exerience, I (or another teacher on prep) can tap them out so they can get a little time. Not implemented yet as I am working with social worker to plan implementation #MEMSPAchat
Q1: Secondary trauma can impact teachers as they learn about the first-hand trauma students experience. Describe one way you support teachers when they experience secondary trauma. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
Yes, this is something Nashville does. There is a edutopia video on it. You do need a culture that is accepting of each other to do this well. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Go into their room and relieve them for a period of time. Provide them with a bottle of water, provide a tissue if needed and a safe place to process. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Again, checking in with the teacher. Also providing an opportunity for the teacher & student to connect BEFORE returning to class if there was a suspension. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Debriefing after behavior crisis is important. Allows us to support & reassure each other and make revisions to our plans. Hugs, pointing out positives, and, if appropriate, being playful with each other helps us regulate our own emotions. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A2: Give time to get away from the situation, have someone watch the class for a bit or whatever is needed. Afterward we talk through it and what he happened. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Remove the student(s) from the environment and allow the teacher time to reflect and decompress. I always make it a point to go back and speak with them about their perceptions, what happened, how it impacted them, etc. #MEMSPAchat
A2: We never let a T return to class after a room is trashed. After some restorative work, we put it back together and give time so that everyone is ready to proceed with positivity. Easier said than done, but our staff is amazing. #MEMSPAchat
A2: encouragement, listening, time/space, asking what support is needed and making it happen, reflecting as a team after the fact (not in moment) on if things could have been done differently so the team can avoid or reduce similar issues in future #MEMSPAchat
A2: Always debrief and plan for reentry. We will also autopsy what happened when the time is right. Always looking at ICEL (Instruction, curriculum, environment) first to see what we can control. Always try to avoid LICE (looking/blaming the learner first #MEMSPAchat
A2 I am usually there during the event so afterwards we talk together. Every teacher is different so I just try to meet them where they are at. I will say, social workers (me) support others and sometimes get lost in getting support too. #MEMSPAchat
A2 It's vital to provide the opportunity for the staff member and students to meet to begin to rebuild the relationship. I'll cover a class to get this done or I'll help facilitate the conversation. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Covering classes so they can take a circular walk on our labyrinth or peace garden, providing a safe space to debrief and regain their calm, essential oils, access to deep breathing and mindfulness apps.
#MEMSPAchat
A2: Provide them an opportunity to debrief. Depending on the situation I have sent staff home for the day just to give them a break. I also make sure they know how much I appreciate all they do for our students. #MEMSPAchat
A2 It's vital to provide the opportunity for the staff member and students to meet to begin to rebuild the relationship. I'll cover a class to get this done or I'll help facilitate the conversation. #MEMSPAchat
We do this as much as possible...Restoring their space and trying to fix damaged stuff is important for the T's to know we do care about them and their space #MEMSPAchat
A2: Principals and coaches have offered “I am In, You are Out” time where they sub for the teacher so she can take a mental break. T can choose to process with someone or just go off campus and get a coffee #StarbucksAlwaysWorks#MEMSPAchat
A2: Process with them as soon as possible following the event. Again, allow them to step out of the class if needed. Debrief w/ together w/ the teacher and the rest of the class. #MEMSPAchat
So important to have teachers and students reconnect. Modeling move forward, second chance, forgiveness. Especially for our kids who have experienced trauma and don’t have that model at home! #MEMSPAchat
A2 To support other Ts, I allow them time outside of the classroom to "cool down" and gather themselves before returning. Having an open neighborhood set up allows our team to support each other at any given moment while maintaining eyes on all Ss. #MEMSPAchat
A2: I immediately offer to cover their class and often have a conversation with their students to ensure all are supported. Later, we'll meet as a response team to debrief what the student is trying to tell us through their behavior and how we can better respond. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Reflect on the situation with the teacher; include social worker and other relevant professional staff. Implement strategies such as self management plan, breaks, and parent involvement. #MEMSPAchat
A2: It depends on the teacher, some teachers need to be heard & talk out their experience. Others need to be reassured & hear that a nasty fight wasn’t their fault. I’d like to think that I my relationships with staff determine my response. #MEMSPAchat
By knowing individual T needs, I give them what helps. It might be time away for a minute, a hug, humor, letting them keep moving forward and process time later. Each staff member has slightly different needs. #MEMSPAchat
Q3: How do you coach your teachers to support each other in productive and effective ways as they are supporting students who have experienced trauma? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A2: From a classroom teacher perspective talking, tissues and being given the opportunity to take a break from the situation is so important. Often the student is removed to take a break and teachers need this break sometimes too. A chance to breath and refocus. #MEMSPAchat
By knowing individual T needs, I give them what helps. It might be time away for a minute, a hug, humor, letting them keep moving forward and process time later. Each staff member has slightly different needs. #MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat A2 Remember we are working with kids, some have serious behavior issues. They come to school with so much baggage. They may release all their emotional energy in your classroom due to no fault of your actions. BE SUPPORTIVE.
A2: Principals and coaches have offered “I am In, You are Out” time where they sub for the teacher so she can take a mental break. T can choose to process with someone or just go off campus and get a coffee #StarbucksAlwaysWorks#MEMSPAchat
A2 - Allow time to regain emotional control and then debrief with the team. Identify the positives, learn from the negatives. Provide added time later to vent so the teacher isn’t taking concerns home at night. Make sure they feel supported at end of day. #MEMSPAchat
A3: We’ve had many PDs focused on trauma and how to support each other and self. We continue to offer supports and meetings to cover supporting our Ts and staff. #MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat A2: I work closely with our school social worker. We are work toward using restorative practices. When things calms down, we try to meet with the student and teacher and make sure that everyone is comfortable before returning to class.
A3: Ts want to support each other through behavior challenges, but often they struggle with exactly how to help. Check out this post for four specific ideas:
https://t.co/7wAlqxqEAI#MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A3: We started monthly "behavior meetings" by grade level to make sure we are all on the same page and brainstorm ideas and possible interventions necessary. It helps everyone be ware of stressors and ways to support both T's and S's
A3: Be an example of sharing and vulnerability. When time/place/space permits, share our stories to let Ts and staff know that they are not alone. #MEMSPAchat
A3: Our weekly OnTrack meetings comprised of teachers, counselors, attendance clerk, admin, social worker, school psychologist, etc. meet to discuss students that are at-risk or have experienced trauma. The focus is to provide individualized plans for of our children! #MEMSPAchat
Q3: How do you coach your teachers to support each other in productive and effective ways as they are supporting students who have experienced trauma? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A3: Be an example of sharing and vulnerability. When time/place/space permits, share our stories to let Ts and staff know that they are not alone. #MEMSPAchat
A3: We have a Building Behavior Team process and a monthly check in with every teacher to ensure that they are being supported and brainstorm ideas when needed. #MEMSPAchat
Q3: How do you coach your teachers to support each other in productive and effective ways as they are supporting students who have experienced trauma? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A3: So often some or all of the story is missing. Make sure everyone is on the same page and commit time to fill in the gaps. Ss struggle to communicate their story. Help them to paint the picture! #MEMSPAchat
Q3: How do you coach your teachers to support each other in productive and effective ways as they are supporting students who have experienced trauma? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A3 Our SI teams is the Culture Team. They are focused on behaviors at all tiers. I think this has helped open up honest dialogue about the the challenges that come with students of trauma. Also-- an important mantra we remind ourselves is give one another GRACE! #MEMSPAchat
A3: We continue to work on culture and a part of that is sharing our individual stories with one another. By sharing our stories we continue to connect on a greater level that allows us to be there for one another through the tough times. #MEMSPAchat
Q3: How do you coach your teachers to support each other in productive and effective ways as they are supporting students who have experienced trauma? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU

Q3: How do you coach your teachers to support each other in productive and effective ways as they are supporting students who have experienced trauma? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A3: Just keep reminding them that we are all in this together and our job is to support our Ss the best we can while they are with us. I give my Ts as much similar training as possible so they all have a similar knowledge base of support. #MEMSPAchat
Need to realize sometimes students act out BECAUSE they feel safe. When I am stressed my wife &love ones get the brunt of it because there is safety there and I know they will give me love. Often classroom is only place traumatized students know they will be loved. #MEMSPAchat
A3: Be an example of sharing and vulnerability. When time/place/space permits, share our stories to let Ts and staff know that they are not alone. #MEMSPAchat
A3: During our monthly trauma training, the first thing we do is talk about our own stress levels (1-10) and identify stressors in our lives, personal and/or professional - very vulnerable activity, but has brought us all so much closer together. #MEMSPAchat
Q3: How do you coach your teachers to support each other in productive and effective ways as they are supporting students who have experienced trauma? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A3: Through a team approach and collective efficacy, teachers instinctively offer support through listening, checking in, offering to help, brainstorming strategies, and just listening. Having empathy for both the struggling student and fellow teacher is important. #MEMSPAchat
PD on the brain, toxic stress, regulation, is helpful. I spend time working with teams encouragement, validation and showing them I have confidence in them. If teachers have hope, kids find hope. #MEMSPAchat
A3: Directly. If your are not a part of the situation don’t get involved UNLESS you are going to be positive. It’s stressful. No easy answers. Everyone working their tails off. If you’re not adding positive vibes...we’re not looking for your support. #MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat A3 ROLE MODEL THESE DESCRIPTORS! When you are able to have your students follow your rules out of LOVE rather than fear of a consequence from breaking a rule, your classroom becomes MAGICAL! Students will be totally different in your room than in others.
Need to realize sometimes students act out BECAUSE they feel safe. When I am stressed my wife &love ones get the brunt of it because there is safety there and I know they will give me love. Often classroom is only place traumatized students know they will be loved. #MEMSPAchat
A3: Not coaching as much as giving Ts time to listen and learn with each other as we support students with trauma. They need time to share their experiences and explore strategies. #MEMSPAchat
A3 - Develop systems of support and encourage teachers to use them. Reassure them it’s not a sign of weakness to ask for support. Tap in / Tap out. I help you when needed and you can return the favor when I need some support. Teamwork makes the dream work. #MEMSPAchat
A3 I believe the culture in our building fosters relationships with our students that helps us to reach our Ss that have experienced trauma. #OnePride#MEMSPAchat
A3: Not coaching as much as giving Ts time to listen and learn with each other as we support students with trauma. They need time to share their experiences and explore strategies. #MEMSPAchat
Q4: Principals experience secondary trauma too, and we often take on the emotions of our teachers. How do you manage your own emotions and take care of yourself when student behaviors seem out of control? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A3: Using check in/check out, encouraging building relationships with all students, and modeling positive interactions with all students so teachers can support each other. #memspachat
A3: We crave constant reminders that we're all in this together, that we will be stronger having gone through the struggle to help a child heal and hope again. Give them resources, support them by listening and help them feel valued, loved and safe. #MEMSPAchat
A3: I am always aware that I need to model being calm. Even when I have no clue what to do (most days) I try to appear calm. These are kids who need us to react calmly not emotionally. Not about me. #MEMSPAchat
A3: I am always aware that I need to model being calm. Even when I have no clue what to do (most days) I try to appear calm. These are kids who need us to react calmly not emotionally. Not about me. #MEMSPAchat
Hi I’m Melanie from Hudsonville! Loved doing snow day challenges with my students this week and stepping a little out of my comfort zone to start a lip-sync contest as one of them with my daughters! Anything to stay connected with my students! #MEMSPAchat
A4: I am a rock! I do my best to not be emotional in the situation. Ts take similar approach often times. My social worker needs a leather couch in her office for me...My therapist, friends and family often catch the brunt of my frustrations. #MEMSPAchat
A4. This has been a struggle for me this year. Needed to step back and focus on the good things going on with all the other 99% if students and not focus on the 1% all the time. #MEMSPAchat
A5: Administration can a very lonely and grueling profession. Aside from our outlet, it’s imperative that we all have those “go-to” people to make this calling feel a little less lonely. #MEMSPAchat
Q4: Principals experience secondary trauma too, and we often take on the emotions of our teachers. How do you manage your own emotions and take care of yourself when student behaviors seem out of control? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A4: Each morning, I listen to an inspiring @YouTube video or uplifting music that reminds me that it is more important to focus on WHO I want to be that day than WHAT I want to accomplish. This is my fav: https://t.co/4tC2bCS60q#MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
Absolutely! Most important part of the process is debriefing. Why it happened is tricky - but important!
What went well? What didn't? What are we going to try next time? #MEMSPAchat
A4: Just like teachers, we need support too! That's why it's so important to have a support system like #MEMSPA and good friends to call on. I'm lucky to have @AllysonApsey as one of those friends! #MEMSPAchat
A4- I have to admit there are times I don't realize the impact it had on me until much later. Sometimes I surprise myself with the calm I am able to demonstrate--then it hits me later. I would love to learn from others how they manage this. #MEMSPAchat
Q4: Principals experience secondary trauma too, and we often take on the emotions of our teachers. How do you manage your own emotions and take care of yourself when student behaviors seem out of control? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A4: After taking a few deep breaths, I remember that this child is telling me something and it is not a personal attack. #MEMSPAchat#EasierSaidThanDone
A4: I am so lucky to have a supportive family and an amazing staff. My Christian faith is also a foundation for my support. I feel called upon to show unconditional love regardless of situation. It helps me to love when I know that it is my calling & responsibility. #MEMSPAchat
A4, Being a social worker, we start learning about self care early in college. I have a pretty strong self care plan that has taken me a long time to create and make it work for me. Mindfulness has really reduced my stress and I am aware of my self talk. #MEMSPAchat
A4: I really am able to not get emotional during situations with children and am able to maintain objective distance. When the day is done and I'm reflective my family, friends, or a cold beverage tend to be a good way to put things in perspective. #MEMSPAchat
Q4: Principals experience secondary trauma too, and we often take on the emotions of our teachers. How do you manage your own emotions and take care of yourself when student behaviors seem out of control? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
Q4: So true. Vent to my wife when at home or talk with my principal but while in the moment the thing that helps the most is getting out in the hallway and talking with Ts and Ss. Ss always have a smile on their face and are there to cheer you up. Ss are powerful. #MEMSPAchat
A4: I'm learning to practice mindfulness. I take a walk, spend time with students. Lean into my family. Reach out to my Tribe. It's not easy and I can always do better. #MEMSPAChat
Q4: Principals experience secondary trauma too, and we often take on the emotions of our teachers. How do you manage your own emotions and take care of yourself when student behaviors seem out of control? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
#memspachat A4 From a Tr perspective, If I am dong the best I can with a kid and they are still "trouble" I would hope my principal has my back with the parent. We are all humans and make errors but it is nice to know your principal will be there for you.
A4: Reaching out to a support team, like the @MEMSPA group!, to help give perspective on the situation. Then often time in the outdoors to clear my head and refocus. #MEMSPAchat
A4: try and use the same process we teach the students- Recognize (the feelings and sensations) Categorize (the emotion I am having) and Strategize (determine a productive path forward) . For me that usually means #BoxBreathing#MEMSPAchat
Q4: Principals experience secondary trauma too, and we often take on the emotions of our teachers. How do you manage your own emotions and take care of yourself when student behaviors seem out of control? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A4: I venture down to the young five and kindergarten rooms and soak up some love and joy. I also remind myself that these students need us and the reason they are showing behaviors is because they feel safe around us. #MEMSPAchat
A4: Just like our teachers have to have a go to person, we need that as administrators. @mccreah10 is my one a day - we check in daily in some way and having the support and perspective from someone outside of the school/ situation has been so beneficial. #MEMSPAchat
Q4: Principals experience secondary trauma too, and we often take on the emotions of our teachers. How do you manage your own emotions and take care of yourself when student behaviors seem out of control? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A4 Deep breath, and visit classrooms when I can. Then when I get home I run and then share the story with a Voxer group to get ideas for next steps. #MEMSPAchat
A1: by listening, being present, and jumping in when they need support or a break to show that it takes a team and that they are not alone! #MEMSPAchat
A3: As a teacher not coaching but being each other’s listening ear, shoulder to lean on and teammate. Being a friend at a time when friendship is needed most. #MEMSPAchat
A4: Laughter is a great resilience skill; watching Gerry Brooks helps!
It's also helpful to emotionally close every door behind me each day as I shut them physically: office, school, car, home, to leave it at work. Healthy boundaries are key.
#MEMSPAchat
A4: Zoom out for perspective.
Keep the Four Agreements in mind as I reflect on the situation. Have some alone time between work and home mode if possible. #MEMSPAchat
Q4: Principals experience secondary trauma too, and we often take on the emotions of our teachers. How do you manage your own emotions and take care of yourself when student behaviors seem out of control? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
Q5: We build in supports for students like calm corners or sensory tools. What supports could we provide teachers to help them regulate their own emotions? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A4: I venture down to the young five and kindergarten rooms and soak up some love and joy. I also remind myself that these students need us and the reason they are showing behaviors is because they feel safe around us. #MEMSPAchat
Meeting with the teacher-listen, provide support, discuss next steps and give them with time to work with the child before the child comes back into class-think sheets/restorative practices. #MEMSPAchat
A4: Developing relationships and bonds with the struggling students and their families has helped me develop an understanding of the root cause of the behaviors and feel less frustrated. Focusing on improvements, no matter how small, is key in staying positive. #MEMSPAchat
A5: Chocolate. Lots of Chocolate.
We are building a professional library to help build skills, a calm and serene lounge to relax in, and opportunities to spend together that is not necessarily PD or work related. #MEMSPAchat
Q5: We build in supports for students like calm corners or sensory tools. What supports could we provide teachers to help them regulate their own emotions? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A5: Our Ts LOVE learning about self-awareness & social awareness alongside Ss this year w/ new SEL focus. Also, we imbed things like "Zen Zones" & relationship building opportunities to make school need-satisfying for Ts too. https://t.co/u7pep5tA0C#MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A5: We can provide them the same opportunities. Together our staff painted & decorated our lounge, brought in a couch and comfy chairs and made it a staff only space. They need a safe place too. #MEMSPAchat
Q5: We build in supports for students like calm corners or sensory tools. What supports could we provide teachers to help them regulate their own emotions? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A5: Each T reacts differently. Giving them that differentiated support- Cover their room- chocolate- coffee- reminding them it is not your fault etc... #MEMSPAchat
Q4: There is something about going into a preschool/early el classroom and getting down and playing with them that helps center me. Connecting with colleagues & family and listening to 80's and 90's music LOUD on the way home (and singing) #MEMSPAchat
Q4: hardest part is taking on emotions of the teachers/team. We take home more baggage than ppl realize. We want to solve things quickly. It doesn’t work like that. I try to remember that. Also, I make jokes/use humor. Some like it. Some think I’m ridiculous. 🤷🏽♂️ #memspachat
A5: Working on this part. We painted the space, but it needs to be so much more. We need a space where staff can go to breathe for a minute. #MEMSPAchat
Q5: We build in supports for students like calm corners or sensory tools. What supports could we provide teachers to help them regulate their own emotions? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A4: I’m not a principal but as a teacher remind myself that the behavior is a form of communication not a personal attack. Taking walks, lots of family support, thinking of two positive things that happened during the day before I walk out the door. Music helps too! #MEMSPAchat
A5: Again, modeling calm behavior in stressful situations. Also, building trust so teachers know than can trust and rely on admin for support. #memspachat
A5: Be there!! Work all the angles and connect at every level. Sometimes the best thing you can do is the behind the scenes work!! Increase the safety net!! #MEMSPAchat
Q5: We build in supports for students like calm corners or sensory tools. What supports could we provide teachers to help them regulate their own emotions? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A5: Our behavior coach is working on Zones of Regulations with some kids and some staff is using the same language and strategies, very cool to see! Hoping to get property behind the building and build a nature trail to support this too! #MEMSPAchat
A5: Provide them with a space they can go to just take a breath. I schedule their planning time and lunches with their grade level colleagues. This way when they have their scheduled breaks they know their team is there for them. #MEMSPAchat
A3: This is something I think I need to work on with my staff and would love ideas. I think they aren’t confident in handling big emotions so they struggle with supporting each other. #MEMSPAchat
A5 Jeans days, chocolate, and just a few minutes to sit and talk have always helped me. This is a great question with many solutions that can help support teachers in being their best! That's what we all want! To be able to KEEP ON AND TEACH ON! #MEMSPAchat
A5: there is an awesome group in West Mi called Theive that focuses on social and emotional support for staff. Provides PD on self care and mindfulness, my staff also did an online mindfulness course #MEMSPAchat
A5: Coffee drawing for any teacher that shared what they did for #selfcare outside of school. Encourage and model self care until it becomes routine for all. #MEMSPAchat
A5: I'm proud to say that celebrating and encouraging each other is just part of a normal day in our school. We have a ton of fun because sometimes... you just have to laugh! #MEMSPAchat
Q5: We build in supports for students like calm corners or sensory tools. What supports could we provide teachers to help them regulate their own emotions? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A5 I think this goes back to Q3-- having our teachers help one another through these challenging moments. Peer supports, consistently sharing mindfulness practices, investing in the adults as much as the students. This is why I am such a fan of Leader in Me. #MEMSPAchat
#memspachat A5 Role model to the teachers what you would like them to do to the students. This is tough in a tiltle 1 school where kids go home to broken homes. Above all preach patience with the kids. in many cases they act out to get attention.
A5: Regular meetings with our team (social worker, TC, parents, paraprofessionals, RESA behavior consultant) let the teacher know we are all in this together. It is a support group for all of us. Chocolate helps, too! #MEMSPAchat
A5: Do mindfulness at staff meeting, PD that includes helping Ts to take care of themselves. Staff exercise activities, pot lucks, be an Admin that creates a safe place in your office that Ts feel like they can come and vent. Created a culture committee. #MEMSPAchat
Q5: We build in supports for students like calm corners or sensory tools. What supports could we provide teachers to help them regulate their own emotions? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
Not able to join #MEMSPAchat tonight but look forward to swinging back around tomorrow to see @AllysonApsey ‘s high quality questions.
Stay warm, leaders!
A5 We have a fitness room that can be used by staff (bikes, treadmills, elliptical, weights, heavy bag). But I think a teachers lounge with some coffee or hot chocolate and plain old chocolate would be good, too. #MEMSPAchat
A5 - Open lines of communication. Judgement-free chats. Group lunches when time permits. Organized yoga classes before / after school. Team bonding activities or other group outings away from work. Identify our own emotional states and use tools to get back to green! #MEMSPAChat

A5: Offer yoga for staff, training from @_coolclassroom SEL activities for them to do daily in classroom via @DanWolfEDU monthly calendar https://t.co/u5jwf9QuTm and online training if interested as part of our internal university program. #MEMSPAchat
Q6: Behavior escalations can affect the students who witness the crisis. Describe how you help other students feel safe during, before, and after a behavior escalation. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
Q5: Build in money in your budget to train them in mindfulness. I just attended the #memspa sponsored Mindfulness retreat with @Syndee_Sue. How School Leaders Can Reduce Stress and Thrive on the Job (caryn wells) #MEMSPAchat@kobrohl@WWCSD
Q5: We build in supports for students like calm corners or sensory tools. What supports could we provide teachers to help them regulate their own emotions? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A5: Quick notes of appreciation, chocolates/snacks/coffee surprises, relaxing areas in school, opportunities to get to know one another outside of our profession... and laughter! #MEMSPAchat
A4: I have my principal admin team that I feel I can go to when dealing with different situations @MStefanich and my husband who is also in education. I also love to do crafts and read-with my girls-stepping away from work and taking care of me! #MEMSPAchat
A6 talking to kids/class about how our main job is to keep kids safe is one way. Sometimes I talk to kids one on one. Sometimes, kids will ask me about a kid. I just try to focus on safety and love for all kids. #MEMSPAchat
A5: I would love an adult calming space. A comfortable chair or couch to curl up on for a while. Some quiet music, water and snacks. A safe place for adults to decompress after dealing with a difficult situation. A quiet zone. #MEMSPAchat
A5: Encourage them to show self-compassion. Provide a Zen Zone for them to relax during break. Give out scented foot soak for them to take home. Provide #mindfulness balloons or bubble wrap to pop their anxieties and angries away. Teach them to do a body scan.
#MEMSPAchat
A6: Our teachers, school success worker and behavior coach do a great job talking with the rest of the class in reflecting on the situation. It gives them some terms and knowledge about it and are so forgiving to their peer. #MEMSPAchat

A5: There are times that we have to be the boss but there are more important times that staff need to know that you are there to support & that the moment is off the record and safe. It’s ok to be vulnerable & give staff space and time to do the same. #MEMSPAchat
A6: We have Ss Safety Plans for behavior crisis situations, and the idea is to practice them like you would any drill. One of our amazing Ts made visuals like this for all scenarios. Ss feel safer when they know what is going to happen. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A5: It's amazing what a Keurig will do to a teacher's lounge and an occasional hot chocolate bar too! @Creekside_MS our secretaries & @craiggreshaw makes sure we are calm! #memspachat
A6 It's best to remove the students from the situation if possible, and that would provide a chance to speak about what is being done to help improve the situation so that it doesn't happen again. #MEMSPAchat
A5: It's amazing what a Keurig will do to a teacher's lounge and an occasional hot chocolate bar too! @Creekside_MS our secretaries & @craiggreshaw makes sure we are calm! #memspachat
A6: We often have a classroom meeting to debrief on a volatile situation & sometimes a visit from the social worker. I find that students are VERY understanding & empathetic to students with behavior issues. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Help them to understand. Even when you can't provide all of the details, you can let them know they are safe and that a plan is either in place or being created. #MEMSPAchat
Q6: Behavior escalations can affect the students who witness the crisis. Describe how you help other students feel safe during, before, and after a behavior escalation. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A6: It's a sad reality that students affected by trauma tend to act out more than once. I think mindfulness, a strong classroom community, and explicit teaching to the remaining students on how to handle these situations all help to mitigate secondary trauma. #MEMSPAchat
Q6: Behavior escalations can affect the students who witness the crisis. Describe how you help other students feel safe during, before, and after a behavior escalation. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A6: we have a building safety plan that we have posted in each room and review with classes at the start of the year. We also do invisible disability lessons with students and debrief after really big incidents, we focus on it being a skill deficit not bad behavior #MEMSPAchat
A6 - Have a plan & practice as a group when everyone is calm. Explain that sometimes we have BIG emotions but as a teacher it’s our job to keep everyone safe. Remain calm or fake it till ya make it. Debrief with class afterwards and reassure them that everyone is OK. #MEMSPAChat
A6: Sensitivity training is a strategy that helps classmates develop understanding & empathy for the struggling student. It is also a good opportunity to talk about how to respond when behaviors escalate. Restorative practices repair the relationships afterwards.#MEMSPAchat
A6: We debrief with the class or individual student when necessary. I also call home to let the family know what happened and to let me know if anything comes up at home. I want the Ss to know I am there for them as well. #MEMSPAchat
A6- We have had our counselor go into the classroom and talk with those other kiddos. One of the positive side effects we have witnessed is the increase of empathy that our students show. Habit#5 Seek First to Understand then to be Understoood-has grown. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Critical we rebuild the relationships with all as students only feel as safe as the worst behaved child is treated. We need to debrief & talk about how all have needs that need 2b met & when aren’t we act out. Can’t have “the” child being looked at as outcast. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Communicate, process, provide access to support staff (counselor, dean, resource officer, admin, etc), have staff notify of struggling Ss so we can initiate support to those who don't seek it #MEMSPAchat
Q6: Behavior escalations can affect the students who witness the crisis. Describe how you help other students feel safe during, before, and after a behavior escalation. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
#memspachat A6 The Ss must know that under all times an adult is in charge and that their peers pose no threat. Fear that builds up in a classroom will likely erupt in an unfortunate incident.
A6: B4: Teach differences. During: Keep them safe, remove from space. After: Process w/ them. Restorative if all parties are able to participate. #MEMSPAchat
Q6: Behavior escalations can affect the students who witness the crisis. Describe how you help other students feel safe during, before, and after a behavior escalation. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
5: lots of food!! Book talks related to trauma, integrating self-care/relationship building activities into all staff meetings, making them feel valued and appreciated-staff shout outs/cards/trolley cart w/goodies) #MEMSPAchat
A6: At the middle school level, I keep my voice calm, movements slow and keep them working as much as possible. Once the situation is under control, we'll most likely address it quickly with just facts. #memspachat
A6: Hmmm. Great question. I need to strengthen how we intentionally address the aftermath with the other students. I plan to work with our new behavior coach, SSW and team to get this solidified. #MEMSPAchat
#memspachat A6 The Ss must know that under all times an adult is in charge and that their peers pose no threat. Fear that builds up in a classroom will likely erupt in an unfortunate incident.
A6 Our morning circles normally focusing on character building and how we can be the best version of ourselves. Also cannot express the power in building the relationships between students! #MEMSPAchat
A6: I make sure to front load them with what they should do and praise them if/when the situation arises. After, we have a very open and honest conversation about their feelings. It's important to reiterate that it's our goal to keep them safe. #MEMSPAchat
Q6: Behavior escalations can affect the students who witness the crisis. Describe how you help other students feel safe during, before, and after a behavior escalation. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
Q7: After a behavior escalation, how do you reconnect with the student who was in crisis? How do you help him/her reconnect with teachers and classmates? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A6: Stay calm during even and with MS students has a conversation about event depending on what it is. Let them know the Behavior Specialist is available if they need more support. 6th grade we have @classcatalyst that help them reflect on events. @_coolclassroom#MEMSPAchat
I’ve had the “fight or flight” talk with the 4th graders regarding one child who had behavior that constantly affected his classmates. It was a success.
A7:ALWAYS approach the student once they are calm, speak clearly and in a compassionate tone. Mallow any and all students to speak the same way to one another, as moderated by a trusting adult. #Memspachat
A7: Try to make sure we have a hug & reminder of fresh start the next day. When possible, it's great to have this happen w/ all adults & Ss involved in the crisis. We process through the crisis at another time when the Ss is able to think rationally. #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
As a 1st year AP, I'm so fortunate to have an amazing principal to lean on, learn from, grow from, and build a great relationship with. @MrsNothnagel4 rocks and so do all of the #cridgepride admin, Ts, Ps and Ss! It's definitely not easy, but manageable thx to them. #MEMSPAchat
A7: If the behavior was bad enough to send to our SRC, I'll discuss things w/ that Ss individually before coming back to class. If it's just in class, I'll often sit down or kneel next to them and talk quietly. side-to-side, at their level. #memspachat
A7: I allow the student the space and grace to regain control. When they are ready the can come to me. I get on their level and discuss what happened. I also provide time for the T and S to have a similar conversation and plan for reentry to the classroom. #MEMSPAchat
Q7: After a behavior escalation, how do you reconnect with the student who was in crisis? How do you help him/her reconnect with teachers and classmates? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A7: it’s important the student has the time and space they need during the crisis and is regulated before going back to class, but once they are ready find a way to get them back with peers and have some success. #MEMSPAchat
A7: Restorative Practice - Students sometimes use a Google Form that they complete as part of processing their behavior. We started this last year and it's been amazing to see how it has transformed our students and what they're able to verbalize to Ss and Ts. #MEMSPAchat
Q7: After a behavior escalation, how do you reconnect with the student who was in crisis? How do you help him/her reconnect with teachers and classmates? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A6: I reassure them that my number one job is to keep them safe. I give lots of hugs. With my kindergarten kids it can be scary so giving them time to refocus and talk about it if they need to. Calming music and a read aloud always helps. #MEMSPAchat
A7: I like to use Event+Response=outcome equation to show the student how if they responded to the event differently, how that would directly impact the outcome in a positive way. Also being a thermostat not a thermometer. Not letting the environment effect us. #MEMSPAchat
A7: It is all about relationships. I rely on the trust we built before the escalation. (Because we know who these students are) I make sure there is always a fresh start and kind words are shared. #MEMSPAchat
A7: I am there - in the room with the student throughout the process. We have an EI classroom and often times that is where Ss deescalate. We talk through, have them complete a think sheet...This is my favorite part of the work I do...Stay calm, patient and loving #MEMSPAchat
#memspachat A7 From 28 years of experience. I was the victim of bullying and gun violence as a kid, among others. When I tell stories to my Ss about my past about things they are currently going through, the relationship deepens and the Ss will respond with love.
A7 I hope we have offered support to problem solve the situation, create time for any healing that needs to occur and welcome the child back into the classroom with loving arms. Connect, Hope, Heal, Resilience #MEMSPAchat
A7: My next interaction with that student is going to be a positive one. Remind teachers of this as well. Need to show them love and that we care about them. Give them a fresh start. #MEMSPAchat
A7 Its amazing what a hug can do when it is timed correctly. When I know the S is ready hugging and holding them with positive messages is so powerful. #MEMSPAchat
A7: 1st remind the child that they are loved! Always loved. Return with them to class as soon as ready, reintroduction with the T first. All after having first processed with class (sometime w/ the child with the escalated behavior but not always). #MEMSPAchat
Q7: After a behavior escalation, how do you reconnect with the student who was in crisis? How do you help him/her reconnect with teachers and classmates? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A7: restorative conversation connecting to affected Ts and Ss facilitated by support staff. Sometimes just "glad you're here" and gaining perspective on what we can do to help transition back and prevent future incidents #MEMSPAchat
Q7: After a behavior escalation, how do you reconnect with the student who was in crisis? How do you help him/her reconnect with teachers and classmates? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A7: Talk with the student in a quiet, private setting. After composure is gained, pull in students who were impacted for a discussion. Let everyone tell each other what they were thinking and feeling. Brainstorm how to make the situation right. Focus on improving. #MEMSPAchat
Challenge Question: What is one strategy or practice you will take away from our chat tonight and use tomorrow to support teachers supporting trauma-impacted students? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A6: By giving them attention. Walking together down the hallways and talking w/them, visiting their classrooms to check in, giving them hugs as they get out of their cars @ morning drop-off, telling them how proud I am of them, eating lunch & playong @ recess w/them. #MEMSPAchat
A7: My next interaction with that student is going to be a positive one. Remind teachers of this as well. Need to show them love and that we care about them. Give them a fresh start. #MEMSPAchat
A7: I try to meet with them often throughout the days afterward. We also have small groups met at lunch or down time to reconnect on a small scale and so they have a support team. #MEMSPAchat
A7 Self reflection moment---I haven't done a great job of this lately, but reentering circles are great to help all students when coming back together. It allows Ss to state how they felt during the "blowup" and how they feel now. Words are strong! #Memspachat
Be intentional and intuitive in hearing the students, not just listening to them. What are their needs and how will I best make sure they are met tomorrow, not next week. #MEMSPAchat great chat tonight!
Challenge Question: What is one strategy or practice you will take away from our chat tonight and use tomorrow to support teachers supporting trauma-impacted students? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
Bonus: really looking forward to looking at the SEL activity calendar and sharing that with my Ts and modifying it for our own Ss and on a monthly basis. #MEMSPAchat
If I were in school tomorrow, I would be reminded to have a positive interaction after the negative one. BUT, another snow day so I'll have to do that next week! #memspachat
Challenge: Reminding staff of what resources we have available and that we are all in this together. Being very intentional in these conversations #MEMSPAchat
Challenge Question: What is one strategy or practice you will take away from our chat tonight and use tomorrow to support teachers supporting trauma-impacted students? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
Challenge: Remember to make time for students & staff, especially in the time of crisis. Also, continue to educate adults in our school about trauma! So important. #MEMSPAchat
Challenge Question: What is one strategy or practice you will take away from our chat tonight and use tomorrow to support teachers supporting trauma-impacted students? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
Challenge myself to take more time checking on staff who are dealing with students in crisis. I have staff with huge hearts and need to make sure they feel supported and are taking care of themselves #MEMSPAchat
@AllysonApsey, I love the classroom safety plan you shared! It's a perfect representation of how we want students and teachers to respond in touch situations. Definitely will be sharing this with my leadership team. #MEMSPAchat

If I were in school tomorrow, I would be reminded to have a positive interaction after the negative one. BUT, another snow day so I'll have to do that next week! #memspachat
Challenge Answer: The 2x10 Strategy @GregJWolcott shared - Can't wait to do this next week after 2 days of winter break, after 6 straight snow days! #MEMSPAchat#bringbackthestudents
A7: we provide our students with space and time away to self-regulate. After they are calm & have successfully completed a quiet five minutes, we do a think sheet to process/strategize future. Once back in class use restorative practices w/teacher & class if necessary #MEMSPAchat
A7: I reconnect by reminding them that I still and will always care about them. ❤️ Usually a hug and a smile will do the trick. Typically the child will apologize to their peers. And 5 year olds are probably the most forgiving children I know! #MEMSPAchat
A8: To remind teachers that for us to be our best for our Ss we need to take care of our Mental Health first and then continue to give them resources on how to do that. Create a positive environment. #MEMSPAchat
Challenge A: I think reminding ALL of my staff (self included) that after a moment of crisis we all need time to debrief, reflect and recharge. #MEMSPAchat
A7: It is incredibly important to circle back as the administrator and letting everyone know that the S is accepted back into class. Ts are great about this! #MEMSPAchat
Implement @GregJWolcott suggestion of intentional 2X10 strategy from support staff to help provide additional positive support beyond the Ts. #MEMSPAchat
Challenge Question: What is one strategy or practice you will take away from our chat tonight and use tomorrow to support teachers supporting trauma-impacted students? #MEMSPAchat#SerendipityEDU
A7 - A genuine smile can go a long way here. Help put that student at-ease with really calm and nonthreatening body language. Let them know that today’s challenges don’t have to bleed into tomorrow. Fresh start for everyone. #MEMSPAChat
