If blended learning combines lecture, direct Instruction, digi-collaboration & open sources, are we ready to teach that way?
NOW If blended learning combines lecture, direct Instruction, digi-collaboration & open sources, are we ready to teach that way?
I don't think I would have ever re-tweeted this until this year! I think I'm ready to let go of my chart https://t.co/pQaVd75Jjs
If we're not ready....what will it take to get ready? https://t.co/MdtZnlF9Xv
If blended learning combines lecture, direct Instruction, digi-collaboration & open sources, are we ready to teach that way?
I think that’s an incredibly broad question. Millions of educators: some may be, some surely aren’t.
Blending learning is definitely possible at any grade. Challenges though include availability of tech, shift in mindset, ...
Jeremey in Mich. Blended AP Env sci and Biology. Lecture is the smallest part of Ss engagement.
Blended learning n . Create an independent learning environment, pull Ss 4 small group, build engagement
I saw this and thought the same thing! I finally think I am at a place with my management where I can let this go.
That is the question, isn't it... Thoughts?
Short answer — no. Still too many infrastructure issues & lack of pedagogical shifts for many—too many.
Looking forward to learning with tonight's . MS Principal from PA.
JOIN If blended learning combines lecture, direct Instruction, digi-collaboration & open sources, are we ready to teach that way?
Hi Jeremy... enlighten us about Blended Learning, please
Looks like an amazing opportunity for children to really push their thinking!
interesting article, still a gray area but I believe we are reaching the "tipping point" of overall adoption
Some Ts and Ss are ready and education is going that way-but culture in schools need to change first to be successful
Infrastructure issues are easy (maybe costly) it's the pedagogical shifts that seem an uphill battle
Fully agree. Lecture is for delivering content. Challenges include engagement, lack of S processing time,... https://t.co/nxosiQ5JyC
Jeremey in Mich. Blended AP Env sci and Biology. Lecture is the smallest part of Ss engagement.
sounds good... are we ready?
UNDERWAY If blended learning combines lecture, direct Instruction, dici-collaboration, &open sources, are we ready to teach that way
So are you suggesting that there’s a formula for blended learning?
Very true. Does take shifts in pedagogy and mindsets.
I agree. Very broad question, but it’s the question selected from the poll by most voters.
Now If blended learning combines lecture, direct Instruction, digi-collaboration & open sources, are we ready to teach that way?
Using and a website to shape multiple modes of Ss engagement. More flexibility and opp to "see" Ss thinking
I’m not sure it’s answerable… :)
Recognize your colleagues with the Excellence in Educational Leadership Award! Deadline: March 28th https://t.co/PP1NfgPvaj
I think we have to be. Teaching everyone same way at the same time limits stu potential & creativity.
However, truly interactive lectures are often effective
I don't believe most educators are yet prepared to teach through blended learning.
Still used to debrief and clarify. 1:1 means Ss can discover content with key ?s
As a field, we lack sufficient understanding of lecture, direct Instruction, digi-collaboration & open sources...so NO, NOT READY
Why does blended learning have to be “the” way to accomplish that, though?
It's like the elephant in the room...how do we get everyone on the same page?
What a great article! I need to step aside in math class and let my students struggle a little more!
DOES BLENDED LEARNING enable teachers to use a combination of digital instruction and one-on-one face time to improve efficiency?
I agree... so why taking so long? Lives hang in the balance...
Most Ts I support aren't even ready to teach whole-group using proven methods (per Hattie, Marzano...)
If not on the same page...at least in the same book?
definitely agree. I think Ts need guidance, support and training along with the attitude needed to be successful.
Due to its smaller size, professional community development and operation of her parents?
Not the only. If we always did it, it could have a negative effect. We need a instructional tool belt
I agree. There’s a place for a good lecture. What follows it, though? Lecture can’t stand alone.
I agree. It’s tough to move ppl into unknown territory; lots of comfort in continuing what they know.
Indeed! True direct instruction can be powerful, again, I'm referencing Hattie's research
... are schools, classrooms, families sufficiently equipped with tech in order to make blended learning work?
Join me in less than 2 hours! chat: Growth mindset, misconceptions, and the expectation gap. https://t.co/mfrBZuqDXd
I think we first have to define blended learning, so many definitions! https://t.co/1Eu9t8SEiL
I don't believe most educators are yet prepared to teach through blended learning.
Don’t many teachers already have one? Certainly not all, but…
. Agreed. Pedagogy has been uneven even as it changes.
Good point. Perhaps there's the part of the lesson where student interests, preferences diverge.
is it a ready or not situation? Or do schoolculture,Ts&Ss need to keep an openmind and keep growing in that direction
well... will take more than peanuts to satisfy the elephant.
Overall, I think no. There are great pockets but not sure about overall.
Can your school/classroom meet the technical requirements of Blended Learning? Can your students?
Right! Let's get our traditional Tier 1 instruction on point already! Sheesh!
The ability to connect the dots into something meaningful-purposeful-makes ALL the difference. https://t.co/05yZ5fFfmX
I’d argue that should be the entire learning experience. Lectures (when used) should be driven by student needs.
I hope so. Question implied that maybe they don't and that blended learning needs to be used as a tool.
Being a strong advocate of tech in the classroom, kids still need a mix of all types of learning. tech is just one tool
Yes! Lectures cannot stand alone. Need the processing time & debrief.
did blended learning with an class, worst scores ever. Doing things online <<< than writing and f2f
Might BLENDED LEARNING help school districts save money? Bring own technology devices to class?
Amy, you're not kidding! If core instruction were better, boy, what an accomplishmt that affects many Ss!
all sorts of models... concept is loosely defined ...
Well said. Always important to include our Ss’ needs & interests. Let’s be S-centered.
Higher Ed is pushing it for their Profs & adjuncts to employ, but how much are they teaching the pedagogy/andragogy and methodology.
I always remind teacher candidates, those that talk the most, know the most! #@Angela_Watson https://t.co/8jcUdiLnEy
Isn’t that kind of like saying “Every carpenter must have a Dremel”?
. Why? Lack of resources? Training? Lousy tools?
That would be amazing, but no. We hardly have access to technology on a daily basis currently.
I think we could give students choice - as to what to do, how to engage AFTER lecture
In Blended Courses a portion of face-to-face instruction is replaced by web-based online learning…have you tried? How’s it going?
Administration of the INSPIRE-G Survey begins April 1st. Sign up for more information here: https://t.co/LXF4iO3Kxl
lots of class discussion and Ss writings. Better able to read and clarify Ss responses with flexibility
What happens when some students don't have their own devices?
Definitely still some digital equity and access issues to resolve before this type of blended learning is ubiquitous.
biggest part of blended learning is kids understanding learning can occur anywhere/anytime
lots of complexity... blended learning requires precise design of lessons and instruction...seldom is the case
I just had to look it up :) Still very broad idea.
FYI I’m not trying to be a troll. Just stretching the thinking here. Including my own. :)
My students make my day, how about yours?
How's it going? https://t.co/gTT5cy4B3O
In Blended Courses a portion of face-to-face instruction is replaced by web-based online learning…have you tried? How’s it going?
Scores improving as writing increased. Most blended last year, best scores yet. Also using case studies
Why wait until after? Who says every kid needs the same lecture? (cont’d)
We are growing in that direction. More and more Ts involved w added laptops. Ss jumping in showing high engagement.
Blended learning: one of best arguments that seat-time is not necessary for student learning. Should happen anywhere, at any time.
Was it the fault of blended learning? Was course adjusted for BL form or just digitized?
I have a class for seniors where students do online modules through comm college, and I assist them 1-1. It is great!
Careful, do not confuse Blended Learning with Personalized and/or Individualized Learning…
jury still out whether blended model is hope or hype...
When we go to a conference, we choose which keynote speakers we attend, right? Can’t kids do that?
Nobody likes following a negative leader, so why would we think students would follow a negative teacher?
"It shouldn't matter how slowly a child/student learns, as long as we are encouraging them not to stop."
I am sorry. Blessed to be in where tech is and has been a priority. https://t.co/n8zZEWPFZD
That would be amazing, but no. We hardly have access to technology on a daily basis currently.
I am absolutely exhausted everyday, but it's worth it!
Agreed. I’m not sure anyone has really defined “blended learning” very well yet either.
For sure a huge process. I was new to course 3 y ago and had blank slate
True, I'm saying most Ts are comfortable and even engaging/good at short lecture as core instruction
Another Excellent New Google Docs Feature for Teachers ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning https://t.co/gwqG5uitHV
Thanks... I didn't think so...
Had a teacher ask today for a simple definition of blended learning. What are some thoughts?
What happens with blended learning in SDs that don't have the money to put technology in all student's hands?
Students say I'm strict, but I don't write referrals. How is that?
Nothing inherently wrong with a Dremel. But it’s one option among many. Some might not choose it.
YES some Ts are ready and willing to use something like the flipped classroom model! Ss crave more control over their learning pace!
Would be nice - just don't see most schools set up that way - and I'm in maybe 100 schools/yr
Yes to all and also a lack of conviction that it is better than past practices. Public Ed is also not demanding it.
I agree! We need a very clear example of what it is and is not. Also, should not be considered a fad! https://t.co/9ZDtaMuxo3
Careful, do not confuse Blended Learning with Personalized and/or Individualized Learning…
OK, but can’t an individual teacher set up her/his classroom to work that way?
well, i am not sure what that means, all i know is what the data told me. I would love to fully blend.
You're right. But shouldn't they try bc it might be good for at least some n the learning space.
The online lesson is so helpful to S's who need to relisten to instruction. Also for Ss who are absent.
https://t.co/89cP57xflQ
In Blended Courses a portion of face-to-face instruction is replaced by web-based online learning…have you tried? How’s it going?
Fear. Comfort with status quo. Anger at this or that.Time.
thats an excellent question. I think due to this issue, BL has not taken off in our district. But we are piloting BYOD.
There's 30+ yrs of research that indicates writing abt subject matter increases learning
Currently taking at UCF. Learning about blended classrooms through that training.
Writing in AP courses to demonstrate deep understanding is impt
Perhaps blended learning mirrors best how our Ss learn in today's digitized culture.
1:1 needed in my experience. Certainly Ts can begin process of moving ang preparing for blended world
So important for Ts to know what to do with tech when accessibility is no longer a problem.
I am teaching most of my lessons with blended components, Ss projects and research is mostly done online
Interesting read to supplement tonight's : What a High School 'Work From Home' Day Looks Like https://t.co/XJNZO8HZoR
. I've been on the receiving end. Not impressed with execution.
Thanks... important data point. Other examples?
don't you feel byod is such an outdated idea? Is this even a convo we need to have anymore?
Point taken. But how much time should we spend teaching dozens of tools/strategies/methods to educators?
I would certainly try... I was always looking for creative ways to engage Ss and ways to meet ea S where he/she was
Excellent point Mark, but BL can provide a way to get to PL.
but typing it into a google doc is less effective. I have my ss draw alot, hard to do on a doc
A study involving 7000 people for 25 years found that instilled at a young age led to a lifetime cumulative advantage.
Great point. Prof development-either from district or personal-is important.
Does BLENDED LEARNING personalize education better than raditional classroom setups? Examples please…
I'd also add a need for parent education about . https://t.co/54eGmhoeXT
Some Ts and Ss are ready and education is going that way-but culture in schools need to change first to be successful
Blended learning, in a flipped model, can free up Ts instructional time. More personalized feedback to and interaction with Ss.
the ideal situation & def. the long term fix/short term can happen by grouping based on interests alone
You are going to want to follow tonight I think. :) https://t.co/QwwNKDZVGO
Does BLENDED LEARNING personalize education better than raditional classroom setups? Examples please…
cool... how are you handling prep?
Well said. Our job has always been to meet our Ss where they are. https://t.co/ohfBtROunI
Perhaps blended learning mirrors best how our Ss learn in today's digitized culture.
Often ppl move existing f2f course activities online w/out modifying for blended learning elements. Results suffer.
I still think it's all about the facilitation skills of the T + monitoring of S progress
But the online lesson can only be a (small) piece of the whole pie. If it does it all, why have classrooms?
Good luck with the BYOD. I hope we can try it but worry about the kids that wouldn't have a device to bring to school.
Agreed. Ask the Ss how they prefer to interact with the content and the instructor. https://t.co/POMz9cDijl
Well said. Our job has always been to meet our Ss where they are. https://t.co/ohfBtROunI
Perhaps blended learning mirrors best how our Ss learn in today's digitized culture.
So what do u make of research (Roediger, Hattie, etc) that says Ss can learn from any style T
Let’s start by not grouping first by birthday.
yep... and the design of the lesson. Does require precision and prior prep...
Definitely why articles & vids for & needs to be differentiated.
i dont get how that is so difficult, an online lecture is the same as a f2f one without engagement
And research that basically says differentiation has little eff size (Hattie, Schmoker)
Tchrs are still important in blended learning. It doesn’t mean just moving material online.
Is anyone trying out blended learning at the elementary level? Particularly 3rd-5th grade? Interested to hear how it's working.
Does software used in BLENDED LEARNING programs make it easier to collect student data that measures academic progress? How so?
well at this point the concept of blended learning is loosely defined...so why not.
It reinforces my thought that making everyone do blended learning is a mistake.
Exactly! In many districts, this level of blended learning is a matter of digital equity and access. https://t.co/Wp0lN7sru4
What happens with blended learning in SDs that don't have the money to put technology in all student's hands?
prep is similar than other planning, feedback opportunities take more time
I'm not saying I have an answer - I'm just saying the lg scale studies aren't definitive
usability is key no time to waste for Ts trying to understand platform features
... so how to handle the on-line part without tech?
Key Q is how blended models change the instructor's pedagogical approach. Can be eye-opening!
Set up the learning so that Ss will OWN their discoveries. https://t.co/rycSqFpswO
But there are online tools that can embed an element of interaction & engagement in an online lecture.
Perhaps making "everybody" do anything with a specific name is a mistake!
I could argue that most of what’s called differentiation is superficial at best.
Digital fluency is a goal of the Common Core State Standards…how does Blended Learning help meet this goal?
I agree! I have more 1-1 time with my students in my "flipped" class than my traditional classes!
do you build the on-line portion? or repurpose finstruction that is captured?
Teaching is too complex to be reduced to a mandate that all do one thing, right?
Tech will never replace sound pedagogy of a teacher. https://t.co/K6vSMHG74L
Tchrs are still important in blended learning. It doesn’t mean just moving material online.
Couldn't have said it better. Ts can spend class time doing practice problems and clearing up misconceptions https://t.co/iKMJUSQozM
Blended learning, in a flipped model, can free up Ts instructional time. More personalized feedback to and interaction with Ss.
I wouldn't pretend that my efforts and strategies could be easily copied. My passion & effort, yes.
All or nothing is almost always a mistake. Variety & balance are important.
BL perhaps more effective for adult learners who are intrinsically motivated. But younger Ss can learn to learn deeply in the model.
facilitation skills matter...so does lesson design, availability of tech, etc... complex...
I did for past 3 years. Currently an instructional coach supporting others w &
Philosophical pedagogical beliefs canB addressed b4 tech is added
IF Ts use extra time/data effectively to differentiate instruction for Ss then is very effective
absolutely, no way to properly group "teaching" although it is possible to highlight interests
However, some proven strats, like concept attainment, can be "copied" and increase learning.
sure can... but does require a cross-walk of pedagogy
Yes! This gets to the solution of Bloom's 2- sigma problem. More 1-1 interactions produce better results. https://t.co/Ew6HOreBPV
I agree! I have more 1-1 time with my students in my "flipped" class than my traditional classes!
We’re fighting to make sure every child has access to great teachers and a quality education. Join us: https://t.co/EOtJ5aqMyN
Definitely. helps collect & display data for analysis and interpretation. https://t.co/rrHnrnTb20
Does software used in BLENDED LEARNING programs make it easier to collect student data that measures academic progress? How so?
Which raises the question: what’s the BEST best practice? What underlying mindset matters most?
Exactly! So many variables!
I think that many educators do not understand what blended learning is let alone be capable of employing it in their classes.
That’s my experience, too. Of course, tech integration is superficial for many, too.
But T rolls move even more fr deliverer of content to orchestrator of deep understanding thru RR&R https://t.co/XIbTJcUPaO
Tchrs are still important in blended learning. It doesn’t mean just moving material online.
Concept attainment isn’t really a strategy per se. It’s a goal.
Yes! This gets to the core of instruction -- T and Ss interacting over content, not teaching to a calendar. https://t.co/OWJ5ZBiLuO
Couldn't have said it better. Ts can spend class time doing practice problems and clearing up misconceptions https://t.co/iKMJUSQozM
Blended learning, in a flipped model, can free up Ts instructional time. More personalized feedback to and interaction with Ss.
Inherently harder to hold Ss attention in online lecture. Look at any successful YouTube vid for level of quality
Yes. Pedagogy still rules.
what would you recommend to Ts as the best resource to learn about bl
The longer I work, the less I believe there IS a BEST best practice; BEST is a collection of practices.
I'm speaking of a specific instructional strategy w that name - developed by Jerome Bruner
when I don't know something I ask Siri, so why shouldn't the students do the same
RT The longer I work, the less I believe there IS a BEST best practice; BEST is a collection of practices.
I deliver PD to Ts on effective instructional strats - for 14 yrs now - and write/publish on them
A cultural shift necessary for BL to be effective. Must have buy-in at the admin level as well.
And “best” is context-dependent…
Very true. Can help Ts design personalized learning experiences for ALL Ss. https://t.co/ufFDSPADuv
Key Q is how blended models change the instructor's pedagogical approach. Can be eye-opening!
PDs addressing LEARNING DISABILITIES (partic Stds1.5 1.6 & 4.1) as demand by VIT are FILLING FAST https://t.co/HFNQsdmrUc
Exactly. We need to be open to using teacher strengths to move Ss in the right direction.
Some people are miserable and problematic because they are in the wrong career. Help them find what they love!
best "best practice" is building relationships with your kids
It's all about the pedagogy. And the passion of the teacher!
One would hope education is a field in which innovation doesn't leave poor and disadvantaged communities behind.
If I have to pick best-of-the-best, I would agree. Building relationships pays off big.
Speaks to the abundance of badges and point systems. Ss seem to want the external motivators. Many adults do too
. Of course there are books on it but I find the most relevant information within the connected community of educators.
or an adults attention for that matter. Vids are for reteaching!!!
College admissions...it's more of an art, than a science. -
A Study of Thinking, Jerome Bruner
No doubt. Never stop learning & being challenged here
Maybe tchrs should b doing that on their own. That is...if they find value n it or they see the value in it 4 their Ss
And this speaks to the importance of continual professional development.

Blimey! That is something of a condemnation. Given the acuity of your powers of observation, I must accept it.
The 'rhetomatic' = teaching rhetorical analysis through structured inquiry. Very snazzy stuff.
I agree. Being in a class is a great way of earning about BL.
and I prepare and other videos for Ss to tune in for content
Any participants near the tri-state area- still time to sign-up for this Saturday, March 12. https://t.co/UUzxaiSSmX
My district's coordinator of PD has designed many BL courses for Ts to enroll in ongoing PD.
wow... first blimey of the night!
Unfortunately, doesn't appear to be the case. Blended learning will soar in "wealthy" districts while others struggle to catch up.
RT : kids still need a mix of all types of learning. tech is just one tool amen to this
I am holding out for a "Gobsmacked"
In a blending learning class, you may learn how to do it or how NOT to do it. All about experience.
Ts out in the field often use diff terms from those in higher ed, etc. - when I use concept attainment I mean Bruner
Pedagogy must support BL. Can't just put a book in PDF file and call it "digitized content." Must be progressive in approach.

Unfortunately, doesn't appear to be the case. Blended learning will soar in "wealthy" districts while others struggle to catch up.
because siri gives them an answer, i give them an explanation with colorful examples
Si much easier to see a big picture of Ss understanding and respond accordingly
Learned a lot about practice last yr from H. Roediger, Make It Stick (neuroscientist)
Agreed. This is where some directed PD is invaluable. https://t.co/g14OARRoU9
And not just admin buy-in, but true understanding of how to apply BL
Nice! Do your colleagues do the same?
Very few things frustrate me like TeachersPayTeachers.
Thrilled for a gold star! I love school!
the issue is that tech is the only streamlined method for that
. That is the shift we need in education. Shift the focus from teaching to learning, but this makes teaching much harder
true, must use a framework like SAMR or TPACK, to have pedagogical understanding
Couldn't agree more https://t.co/G8Z1OeEPOx
Pedagogy must support BL. Can't just put a book in PDF file and call it "digitized content." Must be progressive in approach.
Thanks Joe... what do you use?
"siri" is like looking it up in the glossary, asking an expert is like having the world of whatever u r asking opened up.
I'll raise you a gobsmacked.I have full conf thatTs are learners+will adapt to what engagesSs when in a supportiveculture
Amen. Purely digitizing existing content & making it available online does not constitute blended learning. https://t.co/Ugdbsip82h
Pedagogy must support BL. Can't just put a book in PDF file and call it "digitized content." Must be progressive in approach.
I am facilitating the change and modeling the practice
agree- many think if they have resources online, they've blended learning! Scary when nothing else changes.
Omg I am so tired of Ts telling me that they use TPT to plan lessons! ugh!
Exactly. https://t.co/UHvj3yHhUm
. That is the shift we need in education. Shift the focus from teaching to learning, but this makes teaching much harder
This blended learning discussion leads very nicely into an Authentic learning discussion.
Smart BL seeks to understand HOW Ss learn. When off track, it adapts to the learners at the time of learning.
Kind of like when tchrs use PPT to lecture & think they’re integrating tech.
great in theory, terribly difficult in practice
. I fully agree, but the supportive Culture component is the missing piece in too many schools & Districts.
BL doesn't kill the lecture. Instead, it enhances it -- small chunks of instruction, then Ss manipulate the content discussed.
Joining a lot late to . Single parenting tonight.`
Don't get me started! ;) Technology integration should never be the goal. That is how this happens I think
Teach a little, do a lot.
Agreed... The rest of the pie is where authentic learning through rigor relevance &relationships can happen https://t.co/Wz9XPKk3N9
But the online lesson can only be a (small) piece of the whole pie. If it does it all, why have classrooms?
There's something incredible wrong with our education system if we need to bribe our Ss to learn. https://t.co/gKTI1DgHkR
“We’re bribing students into compliance instead of challenging them into engagement...” via
On we honor who leads our organization.
I try to steer them to or other quality resources!
Clearly a breakdown in school vision if pwpt is tech.
Agreed. Perhaps reason why Ts sometimes hesitant to tackle BL fully? Requires a committed, passionate T! https://t.co/bxjwJQ2wbw
great in theory, terribly difficult in practice
very true if the school's culture isn't supportive, this will be a challenge we will continue to face

Agreed. I meant when the BL instruction goes off track, it must (and can) adapt. https://t.co/QotVSm7eQM
What does "off track" learning look like? We must identify what moves Ss away from learning. Correct that, not the S.
Tom, what is "relevant" learning. Isn't all learning relevant?
Gotcha. Thanks for fixing my hashtag too!
SchoolLeaders need to lead by ex. And btw "school leaders" includes Ts&Ss.We all need to create the culture https://t.co/ZJf3mruJX7
. I fully agree, but the supportive Culture component is the missing piece in too many schools & Districts.
You're singing to the choir, girl! I'm so glad you feel the same way!
. We agree that blended Learning provides all that but the Q is are we ready to teach that way.You may be, but not most.
In interviews w/ Ss, most want BOTH digital and face2face, whether it's whole class or 1:1, or Ss leading discussion
Wonder if research bears out the effect of BL. Do Ss achieve more under this model? Can Ss show learning better than in this model?
I get frustrated when a S says to a T "you make learning fun." What I hear Ss saying is schools make learning BORING. Gotta fix it.
THANKs for participating in Was a delightful conversation about blended learning. Shout out to co-mods:
I have tried units totally built around video, totally lecture, and it's with both that class time is most dynamic
If we are not ready, what are we doing as professionals to create the conditions necessary for the change to occur?
Yes! At college level, it's rare for a student to have ALL courses online. Ss crave f-2-f interaction, too! https://t.co/gmJTR9C2Hg
In interviews w/ Ss, most want BOTH digital and face2face, whether it's whole class or 1:1, or Ss leading discussion

Re-invision the system. Remake the system.
yeah, teaching is hard, none of us mastered any if it before we practiced it, same for BL it takes effort

Overall feel tn is tech can not be forced in CR, it needs to relate to Ss interests & learning methods- how can we better prepare Ts?

I get frustrated when a S says to a T "you make learning fun." What I hear Ss saying is schools make learning BORING. Gotta fix it.
I'm working on a plan to refund schools through a community effort, avoiding the politics that are ruining our schools.
