All well and good to say, but on WHAT tech? And where in the day? And what curriculum could possibly match market progression?!

Computer Science will be a leaving certificate subject option from 2018 and coding will become part of the primary maths curriculum

Thrilled that
@RichardbrutonTD
is interested in tech. But we really must consider where our primary sector is at resource-wise.

ICT funding is grossly inadequate to meet needs of implementing a curriculum. Regardless of ability, we cannot do a subject (1/2)

justice by hoping schools can provide for tech at local level. Those who can will. It'll further divide have & have-nots. (2/2)

I really don't want to be negative, but we have to be realistic here. Our current Science curriculum is 18 years old and so dated.

We haven't managed to update that in 18 years so how on earth can a coding curriculum maintain pace with development?

Be practical. This is a reactionary move that we'll regret. Coding and problem solving within existing frameworks is all good.

I worry this is a soundbite move that speaks to a 'market' and ignores the realities of many schools (poor human/tech resourcing)

Exactly. It's all soundbite. We are miles off being capable of implementing this. I'm sad to say, but it is true.

I agree with everything you've said. Is there a link to this "Action Plan" apart from the blurb on the DES website?

My view is that people on the ground feel the same way because they KNOW teachers & know reality. I fear the Minister doesn't.
