Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
Hi everyone! Jill from Cheney, 7-8 social studies and HS teaching as a career. Favorite song is Oh Holy Night... only time I really wish I could sing! #ksedchat
Hi all, hope you had a great Thanksgiving! TJ Warsnak a HS Social Studies teacher at #HalsteadHS Favorite Christmas song is Linus and Lucy. Watching the Christmas special is a tradition at our house. #ksedchat
Michaela Stevens. 5th-grade S.S and Science Teacher from Garden City, KS My favorite holiday song is, I'll be home for Christmas by Michael Buble! #ksedchat
Hi, all! I'm a tech integrationist for the K-12 district USD 113 Prairie Hills in Sabetha, Wetmore and Axtell schools. I love O Come, O Come, Emmanual in the arrangement by the Civil Wars: https://t.co/dH9tAOVZoz
SAMR is a way to categorize how technology is used in the classroom. We don't just want to replace paper worksheets with digital ones. We want students to use tech to create. #ksedchat
A1: I say it's options of ways to transform your teaching. It gives you ideas on how to make improvements through a conduit of tech. Allows for a renaissance of teaching. #ksedchat
forgot my hashtag the first time, so here it is again: #KSEDchat Hi, all! I'm a tech integrationist for the K-12 district USD 113 Prairie Hills in Sabetha, Wetmore and Axtell schools. I love O Come, O Come, Emmanual in the arrangement by the Civil Wars: https://t.co/dH9tAOVZoz
A1 cont: many teachers fear reinventing everything but SMAR gives a nice progression to integrate tech comfortably while thinking of new ideas. #ksedchat
Yes, I would say that each area has a place in education, but as Ts become more accustomed at incorporating tech they should spend very little time at the substitution level. #ksedchat
I've done some work in media literacy. Not exactly the same as traditional literacy. But some are saying that new media literacy is literacy. It's relevant to tonight's discussion, I think. #ksedchat
#KSedchat A1: I try to help Ts see the SAMR model as a way to make sure we get the most "educational bang" for our "technology buck." Are we considering how powerful tech tools can really change our instruction, students' engagement & classroom rigor? It's a reflection tool!
We work a lot within the rigor/relevance framework and so I draw a lot of comparisons to that while talking about SAMR. Starting from something they know. #ksedchat
A2: At Cheney we first were introduced to it by our superintendent. I feel admins job is to support Ts as we try to dive deep w/ tech. Provide PLD opportunities, T observations, & examples #ksedchat
A2: Tech sometimes is thought as a gadget or fun trinket. SMAR helps show that learning can be deeper & more relevant. Admin can compare past teaching to new ideas & see the improvement themselves. It can also give direction to PD. #ksedchat
We must have everyone on board the SAMR-ship. If we are not working together using the same language we will not successfully implement these strategies. #ksedchat
A2 f/ #KSedchat: When admins understand SAMR they can help set building expectations based on it, facilitate convo around it, and use it as common vocab for helping Ts improve.
My kindergarten daughter started school in August with a better digital literacy than print. She was not alone. If I'm not successfully incorporating tech in my class Ss will not see my class as relevant. Period. I think of that often... #ksedchat
A2 leaders need to understand that we need time and flexibility to learn the tech ourselves as we are guiding ss. Especially as we move towards the deeper end of the model #ksedchat
A2: Money needs to be spent wisely. Ts need proper training. It's a waste to buy $1000+ "Pen and paper replacement" - but if Ts know how to get more out of laptops, then it can be a great investment. #ksedchat
I have also had really great experiences letting the Ss teach me something about tech. It's fun to see how their brains work with tech, even if it isn't always the most academic endeavor. #ksedchat
regarding direction to PD: I think when you are one who offers tech PD, it can be important to show how new resources meet all levels of SAMR that are possible so it can be seen as useful no matter where a teacher may fall on the model, too! #ksedchat
Q2 Use of the tech (SAMR) without admin won’t be as powerful because the benefits won’t carryover to next grade level (or from previous grade)1/2 #ksedchat
I've tried several things this year that I straight up told my kids I've never used and they would have to be each other's tech support. #ksedchat it increased collaboration
How is "good use of tech" determined? By what the best in the district are doing? By what the best in the world are doing? A savvy admin can see either one. #ksedchat
As a 5th grade teacher, frustrating if I’m only one using #classdojo or #Newsela or other tech tools google classroom. Kids not familiar. Have to orient every year. 2/2 #ksedchat
I love learning new things - so I think it's great to let kids know I don't know and then model how we discover new things together. This sounds perfect! #ksedchat
A3 I think you show/provide a few examples of what can be done in a couple subject areas. But then you have to give ts time to collaborate and plan to use it. #ksedchat
When talking tech we often talk about having a "backup" for when tech doesn't go as expected. But w/ SAMR I find it very hard to have a backup for the M and R if the Internet is down. #ksedchat
A3: Teachers have to share what they are doing. Luckily its easy to post, share, email or tweet ideas. Then we have to welcome ideas from other how to improve. #ksedchat
A3 it's a process but don't be afraid to take risks! I started with Google classroom and substitution & just kept going with help from the genius of @thewarsnak#ksedchat
I used to do "tech boot camp" week 1-2 of school and just use that time to train tech routines w my 10th graders. I was one of the only ppl using tech regularly too #ksedchat
A3: The best advice I've ever heard regarding teaching is to always be a learner of new things yourself. If you aren't learning something new, you're totally disconnected from what your students go through on a daily basis. #ksedchat
#KSEdChat with admin support: classroom visits would not be as nerve wracking(?) -why are kids always on tech? Why do you give homework online if kids don’t...how does this help? Admin will also have their own initiatives and send it up to their bosses.
I like to start by introducing ways that tech can make their job more efficient or save them time. Once I've "bought that time" I use it to start exploring SAMR deeper. That way they benefit and so do the Ss. #ksedchat
A3 During training time I give one substitution lesson to each group and have them SAMR-ize it into a good lesson. They collaborate and then present their ideas. #ksedchat
Wanna give a shout out to an amazing teacher? We've teamed up with @Getschooled to give a $100 gift card to a deserving teacher for every 100 shout outs ( up to $10k!) we receive here // https://t.co/9WHfJNXtkH#TeacherAppreciation365
Yes! AND share how/where we came up with the idea. So many of my things are borrowed from other teachers, other grade levels, and other subjects. Inspiration can be from anything! #KSedchat
A3 f/ #KSedchat: My job allows me the opportunity to "coteach" w any T who requests it. I often make suggestions/offers f co-teaching w/ projects that fall higher on SAMR. It's good for me since I'm not in a classroom full time, too! (This is one of the best parts of my job!)
A3: Take risks. Get an idea and just Go For It! Sometimes things fall apart, but there's great learning in both success and failure. Best way to show a growth mindset! #ksedchat
A3: It's not about the tech, it's about what you are trying to teach. If a given technology provides the most powerful approach to learning the topic or material, why WOULDN'T you use it? #ksedchat
A3: The best advice I've ever heard regarding teaching is to always be a learner of new things yourself. If you aren't learning something new, you're totally disconnected from what your students go through on a daily basis. #ksedchat
A3. I would go apps on a tablet rather than applications on the laptop... more intuitive; training not required; give each teacher $50 iTunes card and let them make the tech decision. #ksedchat
I have the same problem with my class project using video editing software. Not a tech that many have used before. It takes extra time to make it work. #ksedchat
A4: I look everywhere like https://t.co/QXkTjODnLk is a great site. Also, I am ALWAYS looking out for Redef resources, sometimes I feel like everyone just wants me to make a video or podcast. #ksedchat
A4: There are so many different apps you can use to get to the modification level. The most important resources are your fellow teachers. Some have already reinvented the wheel and are willing to share their wisdom with you! #ksedchat
A4: In my computer hardware/networking course I assign a term "paper" but the finished paper must be an original edited video published online. Still must follow standards for research papers, but in video form. #ksedchat
A4: I love @AdobeSpark@Flipgrid@piktochart and Google slides. Love that these also have many tutorials on YouTube. If a Ss can watch a video to learn to make slime, they can use the video to learn to make a presentation!! #ksedchat
It really depends on task you have Ss do w the tech. No Red Ink is probably an "A" augmented grammar practice...the tech adds some features that raise engagement and personalize the experience...and provide nice data for teachers. But would probably not be M or R. #ksedchat
A4 one way is for me to straight up tell the students that we have been working/producing “this way” w/ tech and now it’s time to challenge ourselves 1/2 #ksedchat
And produce work that would show we are ready for next level. Ex: write a story, type it up, turn in thru classroom. Lvl ⬆️ create the beginnings of a story, then share it where other students can add own thread thru chat #ksedchat
A5: When I was a classroom teacher my Spanish 1 final was a Google website created by my students advertising ecotourism in Costa Rica. They had to do map, tours,"testimonials" and other stuff that incorporated all we had learned throughout the year. #ksedchat
S - replace a handwritten research paper with one typed on a manual typewriter.
A - use an electric typewriter with error-correct for your paper
M - use a computer with wordprocessing software that can check spelling & grammar
R - create a video based upon your research #ksedchat
A5 If you have students make a poster or other visual, have them create a Google site and share the link.
Create and conduct a survey using Google forms. Create a thinglink page to demonstrate learning #ksedchat
A5 favorite has to be kids working on a project. PBL giving them a framework on their product but giving them free reign on how they should present it. #KSEdChat
Also, they always had to ask for help initially via email. So we learned how to write professional emails REALLY well as freshmen. They had to do a video for their travel agency - it was fun! #ksedchat
A4 f/ #KSedchat: tools that support collaboration, virtual fieldtrips, sharing of projects like videos or writing with an audience, even if it is their parents,
A5: Having students get into making Podcasts opposed to straight speeches. A lot more creative opportunities
https://t.co/cPmXrjLKB4
Love the digital breakouts as well.
#ksedchat
A5: My 8th Ss create SocStud teaching tools for elementary teachers using @piktochart and my 7th create notecard confessions from the perspective of a family on the homestead. #ksedchat
A5: My class creating a Go Green Website using google sites. It’s what got me started using sites and eventually student creates digital portfolios. #ksedchat
