I don't teach poetry but I always wanted to start a poetry club with my friends
morning! Sounds like Robert Frost!
Q1: How will you and your Ss be participating in National Poetry Month this year?
A1: My students and I have a Poetry Day where everyone recites a poem...even me!
. currently teaching poetry in a college lit course and slipping in the likes of Manley and TS Eliot. Because
A1: If anyone has lessons, resources or sites to share for NPM, please share so I can add to the resource library
A1 We will probably announce it on the show and maybe read a few poems.
has an awesome poetry unit for Gr 3-5 that I've tweaked to make work for 6/7
Just warming up, question 2 in one minute.
Q2: What are some ways you could integrate poetry across all subject areas?
These are some of my favorites!
A2 Our involves all areas of study. STREAM!
A1 Our HS is having creative writing week next week! Activities, contests, etc.
Does anyone study the poems that are found in Scripture as part of NPM? Catholic schools have a unique opportunity.
We start a poetry unit this week! So far we have written haikus, cinquains, limericks, and free verse.
A1: We start a poetry unit this week! So far we have written haikus, cinquains, limericks, and free verse.
A2: My reluctant poets always enjoyed haikus. They can be inspired by any subject or topic.
Yeah! We did Poetry from Book titles one year, that was fun!
A2: Discuss poetry for Soc Stud, Eng & Theology. Writing poetry to express concepts in other areas would get wheels turning
I would love to do that with my students. How long is the poem/do they memorize it? š
A2: When giving project options in my Theo class, I sometimes put poetry as option - some are really good!
morning, Jane! Our crazy weather leads to some great poetry. Lovely picture too.
A2 Michelle from STL here, I donāt teach poetry directly, but wondering how I can incoporate tech into poetry.
I've also found that poems with more structure help out the reluctant writers.
because I have 3rd grade, I say, it has to be at least 4 lines, but many go higher!
students pick 3 poems that define them and film themselves reciting them. Got a tattoo artist creating art to go with poems
A2 Concrete poems or Found poems are always great for multiple subject areas.
morning, Shannon! We missed you at Have you made your Spain trip yet?
Had another student film herself doing an interpretive dance (she's a dancer) with a voiceover of the poems)
Poetry Resources from for integration
Encourage teachers to incorporate the Psalms as much as possible
I love how these look and have always wanted to give it a try!
My favorite, a spoken word artist (rapper) created responses to the poems. Recited first, responded in his "character"
Question 3 coming up! Time to share our favorite poem!
Q3: What is your favorite poem or poet? Please share links if you can.
Along the same lines, having students compose their own psalm could be a powerful exercise.
A3 Shakespeare-no contest
My middle schoolers loved crafting rap battles in character!
A3 oh and Bob Dylan and my friend Andy Hill
George Herbert. My struggle is that I never, even as a student like poetry. It wasnt until studying 17th Lit that I liked it
G.M. Hopkins, SJ and Eastertide/springtime seem to go together.
I integrated poetry in Acad Lit class last month with Women's History month. Read suffragette poetry.
awesome! Do you have a link?
Bp Robert Morneau quotes Emily Dickinson and Jessica Powers regularly. Love their theology
A3: Sonnet 18 Gotta love Shakespeare! We would rewrite them in texting lingo. Fun way to decode the language!
A3 Blake rocks and always been a fan of yeats and david wojahn. but recently Princess Rap Battles have been playing nonstop
morning, JD! Thanks for sharing. I knew you'd have a unique favorite!
Our sch counselor hosted a poetry slam and my AL class began and ended each class all month with a student-selected poem
Q4: In what ways could your Ss share their poetry creations with the world?
ya. no one likes yeats:
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world
I heard of some teacher having students analyze lines of Shakespeare in Twitter...short sweet concise understandable
We did it in class. Ss list character traits & script.. We practiced and performed at school talent show
we did that with novels once: Ahab vs. Whale. Whale Wins.
Good morning ! I'm a bit late but I'm here. :)
A3: Can't really say I have a favorite. Guess I'm more of a buffet consumer when it comes to poetry.
RT awesome! Do you have a link?
morning, Erin! Sharing Poetry today!
Ahh, so did you tie it up into a novel study or where the characters original creations?
Confession: The Giving Tree is the story i used to teach my girls critical analysis. Ruined the story for the household.
A4Hosted Poetry Slam at local bookstore/coffee shops my w/middle school Ss. Held in conjunction with a book fair
is now trending in USA, ranking 35
A4: Ss will read an original poem in a poetry slam. We'll create a cafe atmosphere & invite parents & Ts to attend!
We did it in class on a back channel. our goal was to tweet 200 summaries in a period. energized creativity
I love the idea of teaching complicated verse in small pieces.
A4: Ss could use Vocaroo to record themselves reading and then share via QR code on artwork or photo collage
I love poetry but teaching it has never been a strength of mine. Need to get better. Looking forward to your ideas today.
school Annual coffeehouse is coming up. great opportunity for kids to show off their talents. always enjoy the originals
A4: One old-fashioned way...have a pen pal (another school, military, etc.) and write a poem with pen/paper, and mail it.
students created the rubric to judge each other's poetry presentations all month
I showed students how to set up their own blogs. A few kept them active.
A4: Our 2nd grade hand writes letters to soldiers. They could write poems also. Soldiers and the students love the letters.
Thanks for sharing! That's very powerful.

Q6: What poetry resources have you/your Ss created that you could share with us?
5-7 year old. unpack motivations of world's whiniest entitled child. teach to look beyond words
because they are adults, they choice to share on social media as themselves
RT A4: Ss use Vocaroo to record themselves reading and then share via QR code on artwork or photo collage
such a strong teaching approach for anything! poetry included!

I love the idea of teaching complicated verse in small pieces.
hmm, never thought about it that way, youāre right it ruins it. :(
On St. Paddy's day, we did a "March Madness"-style bracket of limericks and then created limericks on suffragette themes
DId lessons last year using Ss recorded themselves and shared via QR code .
my girls (now 14, 11, 7) really dig into the tales now :).
A4 My 6-8 S's did preschool style poems/projects for Mother's Day (trace hand, write about mom) Mom's and Ss LOVED it!
So true, scaffolding is always helpful! I started with teaching poetic devices and then moved to forms of poetry.
. I love limericks! So creative for Ss
, Gunners , , , Good Saturday , , ,
That sounds so cool! I would love to do that with my 5th graders.
Nancy do you use app? I just like how easy vocaroo is for young students.
A4: We have also published student poems in school publications that go to all parents and people outside of the school.
A6: Pinterest has been my lifesaver during my poetry unit! I often use videos to introduce a new form of poetry.
Q7: Which of these forms of poetry do you like to share w/ your Ss and why? Limericks, BioPoem, Haiku, Acrostics, others?
Check out Bp Robert Morneau on Amazon simple poetry books..simple poems for all ages. Hi motto "Write a poem a day"
Great community! Got some good takeaways.
thank you for joining in today! You are welcome anytime.
I'd love to try as well! - sounds like a great tool
I just put my name in the site - it is so affirming! haha Thanks for sharing!
Great examples and steps @ the bottom of the page. Really makes acrostics more meaningful than 1 word lines.
Winning suffragette-inspired limerick. First line prompt and then created in less than 5 mins https://t.co/g5obMaImkk
ooohh...it divides adjectives by gender? sensing all sorts of discussion arnd that in social justice https://t.co/KhgwSf3FF2
QR project Gr 4-best parts Ss practiced, refined their reading, Ss became experts recording classmates
A7: I really like teaching limericks. When they finally understand the rhythm of the poem, they are so excited to write!
Looks like https://t.co/uZ7AfqYq0Z has great resources for Ts, including a Dear Poet, for Ss to respond directly to authors
I like that many poems have the poets reading their work- my Ss love listening to L.Hughes read his poems
Wonderful! Did Ss read their own poems? Did you userubric? Would love to put this lesson into action!
Acrostic poem generator. Tried 10 times, couldnt get a guy to be "ravishing". I feel oppressed. https://t.co/IaapEHhpzA
A7 I liked to introduce many forms of poetry and have Ss create a portfolio. They got to choose maybe 5 forms to showcase
A7: I also love when Ss get to free verse...5th graders share beautiful thoughts & ideas. Many times, about their faith.
did you create the same name as male and female, that could be a great conversation.
Poetry directs thoughts toward God-allowing one to develop other ways to see, know, and relate to the spirit presence within
Q8: Do you know that April 21 is Poem in Your Pocket Day? How will you help your Ss find/create a special poem to celebrate?
A8 We will celebrate on April 29th, that is the day we will recite our poems.
Wow as a male Iām a āMaverick" and female āMeticulousā Hmmmm Still a fun tool!
good early morning, Ken! Thanks for chiming in.
A8: Isn't our prayer a poem? I will share the Serenity Prayer with Ss & give them a pocket version. https://t.co/HHGaKuVWX6
. Ss read their own and classmates recorded and saved - so much fun - will look to share rubric
yes. using same names. pattern appears weighted not exclusive. need my AP stats kids. Still not "ravishing"
I am going to plan on doing this with my 5th graders! Do you have them memorize at home or in class? https://t.co/ut0hcgzCTg
A8 We will celebrate on April 29th, that is the day we will recite our poems.
Thanks, Nancy! This will be really fun and student centered.
memorize at home, but I do have a poetry packet they receive for help picking and receiting if they want.
Back to an earlier question... I want to plan a lesson on poetry in the Bible - any thoughts on the structure of this?
Final question coming up! Thanks for the great resources and ideas shared today!
Q9: Ever thought about hosting a Poetry Picnic or a Poetry Slam?
Maybe pick a familiar Psalm and start off with identifying S reactions before moving into analyzing it
A9 Our 6th graders have a Poetry Cafe with Bongos, sunglasses, and Snaps!
A9: We host a Poetry Slam in our room & invite Ts & parents. Ss make a cafe out of our classroom w/ tea, snacks, and snaps!
