A1: Students and families have a choice in other ways to educate and where to learn. We need to share our story!
A1: Look at all the school choices kids have now (online, charter, parochial, public) It's not just the public vs parochial.
Jennifer, Medill Elementary Principal
Talk about marketing and branding. Edu students in the house tonight.
Lake in Hartville & Uniontown.
A1) School choice has made public education competitive. Also, schools are ranked. Both make branding more important than ever.
A1: The narrative surrounding education hasn't improved on it's own. Ease of which schls can control that narrative has increased.
A1: We live in a society where there's a flood of info. We need to tell our stories so people see all the great things we're doing
'Marketing' needs to attract the Ss and the Ps. Expound upon the value of learning/skills available https://t.co/yLgF2N0O18
A1: that's a big question for Twitter!! At the district and building level branding is huge for many reasons!
A1: I don't know if it improved - just need to adapt/realize we need to stay ahead of the curve in communicating with families!
I'm taking my track team to a meet at Kent State next weekend. Small world!
A1 we need to share the amazing, great things that happen every day in our bldgs
A1 - It’s so important to tell your story so someone doesn’t do it for you. Parents & Ss have choice like never before...
A1 I see the widening of my into the world, and to be heard, I need to "sell" myself.
A1: Marketing is key letting Ps and Ss know what the school has to offer. (Comp Sci, Athletics, etc)
A1 1/2 Transparency was not even a thought when I began teaching non the 80s. Now it's a must.
Telling our story is so important! If we don't tell it, others will
A1: telling the story...setting yourself apart...being the messenger of the news.
a1: schools need to be more competitive with advancement of tech. Other options force classrooms to be more engaging. It's good.
A1: Our society has become used to branding--it's a form of identity.
It has become "market driven" with the concept that Ed benefits the student ONLY rather than our society. Not a step forward
A1 what is happening in classrooms today is dramatically different that it was for our parents. Get story out
A1: There are many options and the market is competitive. Tell your story!
A1: For me, a classroom T, it has changed bc I refuse to allow 1 data point to control my brand.
A2 2/2 Branding gives you control of people's thoughts and perceptions about your school and its programs.
A1. There are a lot more comp between schools. (Charter, etc.) And the breakdown of job security mrktng. https://t.co/1QvQ6MNhOi
A1: Your brand is what you are about. Marketing is how you promote it. If you believe it, you should sell it.
Big question in some places is how do we get people connected/involved so they are able to see good things happening?
A1: Public Ed gets such an unmerited bad rap. We need to "re-brand" ourselves & show the awesomeness within our schools.
So true! We have to tell the WHOLE story https://t.co/zdc3Jd4mTW
A1: For me, a classroom T, it has changed bc I refuse to allow 1 data point to control my brand.
A1: I've seen a link in branding have a positive impact on social emotional health of students building positive school culture!
Loved KSU. I hear Kent has a beautiful downtown now. Haven't been back since 2006.
A1: Teacher centered, textbooks, and dittos didn't need marketing... it was everywhere. Now we have so many variations.
Tia Holliman, HS Curriculum from Gahanna, OH Hi all!
A1: It is important to share the stories of ourselves and our classrooms before others form their own ideas
Doug from Gahanna listening in tonight
A1: The way we teach and the way our Ss learn is very different from years ago. We need to share what we do and why it works.
A1: with the rise of school choice, we must solicit the best (Ts & Ss)!
A1: it really has changed. Schools need to develop a "+" brand & marketing plan to compete w/ alternatives these days.
A1: if you don't market your school, then someone else will, and it likely won't be positive! Good things are happening! Share!!
A1: Information is everywhere thanks to the enhancements of social media. Schools need to take control of this info and brand it.
A1 Branding & marketing allows us to showcase the positives, share our narrative, and increase the succcess story of our schools
Indeed. In many cases it helps with rapport/connection between the Ss & Ts. Such a big key
Are you talking about non-parents?
A1: branding HS become more important as technology and quick communication has improved.
Hope you feel comfortable jumping in at any point!
A1 personify your organization b4 others do. Promote the positive
A1: We have to take control of spreading our msg. If we don't tell our story someone else will!
A1: Can't RT this enough:
Tell your story first before someone else does.
Branding = proactive
It's more than just distributing information. It's about sharing great stories about our kids & staff.
Earned my certification in gifted through KSU. Haven't been back on campus except very occasionally.
A1: The only method we can guarantee positivity in the message about our schools is through marketing and branding ourselves.
great question! When you find the answer, tell me.
A1: choices available make branding crucial- improvement or purpose of branding ends on how viewer sees competition surrounding
A1-Branding/marketing has improved our schools/classrooms-as we hear the great things going on elsewhere we learn and grow
A1: Marketing also helps build S & T confidence, people enjoy being praised
And, does a great job of involving students to share the stories! https://t.co/P5mNvacxFm
It's more than just distributing information. It's about sharing great stories about our kids & staff.
JonSmith here. Sorry I'm late.
A1 with all the choices families have getting the message out helps them find the school that is the best match for their child
A1 As social media has become more pervasive in last 10 years, so is the need for marketing & branding to stand out in the noise.
A1: helps to create a feeling of "team" also, between Ss,Ts & Ps to help develop the sense of community needed these days
A1 it also helps establish an expectation of incoming Ss that there are great things and awesome staff in our bldg
A1 branding demonstrates pride in your school and ultimately enhances school culture
actually talking about all parties, including parents/community. So many who don't or can't connect
a1: schools are a business. We must sell our product & improve our goods to meet consumer demand. Have to be at our best always.
Seriously! That's awesome! I am very interested in this topic! I'll keep an eye on you!
A1: Helps build bridge between outside perceptions and what students are really accomplishing
Right, Lori. Essential if we are to shape the positive narrative of our students' successes
Yes and it's not always a good message!
A1: Silence can mean the void can be filled with what others believe may be happening--may not be accurate.
I'm continually amazed at learning students/teachers are engaged in! And I am privileged to see it daily! https://t.co/VEFpK8BCJ5
A1 what is happening in classrooms today is dramatically different that it was for our parents. Get story out
A1 - branding allows the Ss, Ts, admin, and community to be a part of something positive in the community.
easier said than answered right? Been thinking about it a ton this past year
I hear a lot about competition tonight. I think it can be about helping the schools and districts get better.
A1: a specific quote or logo brands a school and builds positive traditions that will leave a legacy
Definitely agree!! https://t.co/wVOBoqPHWl
A1: Can't RT this enough:
Tell your story first before someone else does.
Branding = proactive
A1: Branding makes those principles the school values the most clearer to the community.
there's a continuous need to sell as numbers can easily be elsewhere. Create the want
Right, Ryan. Must connect our brands with excellence in learning for our students
interesting. We do always need to be on our game
A1: for a dept that lives on communication w/families, branding helps us share info and messages effectively
A1 I agree with it's so important to promote a positive classroom and district environment. https://t.co/Eaop0Mvjfx
A1 we need to share the amazing, great things that happen every day in our bldgs
A1: If we don't tell our story, someone else will.
Agree, Dave. Tell the stories loud and clear to showcase the positives.
Agree. Branding can make a culture change very quickly
That's what I thought you meant. It can be hard, but it's still worth it.
I agree. Sharing great stories about ALL Sts & Ts is important--not just football & NHS https://t.co/tJ6R7GLDob
It's more than just distributing information. It's about sharing great stories about our kids & staff.
I agree. It's important to build the bridge. I don't think that was necessary 10 years ago
mode of branding is crucial as well- even with all the tech options, seeing a face is still desired
And efficiently! My two favorite things, effectiveness and efficiency! https://t.co/Rx5HxIrftg
A1: for a dept that lives on communication w/families, branding helps us share info and messages effectively
****** Q2 is up in one minute*******
Jumping in a little late. And will probably have to leave early! But good to be back. No more comments !
Hi, Neil.
Carol here from Long Island in between tasks.
Exactly. Don't let anyone else tell your story for you
A1: currently working w s's to develop a school coffee shop...if you want it done right, give s's a voice!
Agree ! Competition can be healthy when it challenges us to our "A" game very day!
https://t.co/PlufvgbdlK
I hear a lot about competition tonight. I think it can be about helping the schools and districts get better.
a1: we often look at branding and marketing as external, but how do we sell what we do to other Ts and admin??
Agree. Allows our Ps to seamlessly connect with us daily to see how we are positively impacting Ss
Well said Ryan! I hope more local schools here can move beyond sports scores. https://t.co/I5ke3R2dq1
It's more than just distributing information. It's about sharing great stories about our kids & staff.
Whenever you have increase in debts, it's positive for the .
~ Niklas Kallenberg (Snr Lecturer VAMK)
No doubt. A great staff makes branding & marketing easy - it's showing off their skills
A1: if you aren't telling your story, someone else is.Empower Ss &Ts to help tell the good your school does https://t.co/A59yXlSKOE
A1: Silence can mean the void can be filled with what others believe may be happening--may not be accurate.
Q2: How can teachers effectively brand their classrooms & instructional methods? What are some examples you have seen or tried?
Something like individually we are strong, but together we are stronger. We all have the same goal! https://t.co/Zf4zg97EbP
I hear a lot about competition tonight. I think it can be about helping the schools and districts get better.
absolutely worth it. The struggle, at least to me, is finding non-traditional ways to get the message out
A2 A school wide hashtag is an effective branding medium that celebrates your contribution to your school.
Agreed. A good brand gets the community on board & builds a culture of expected success
Yes, Jennifer. Clarifies the narrative and helps share the true story of Ss accomplishing excellence
Our district has been working on this. Social media, videos, PowerPoints, etc
I agree. I think we can build off of each other & help each other out
A2: Take traditional newsletter and pump it up with tech (videos, vines, clips, , blogs, etc that showcase students
A2: I think by sharing what's happening in class, easily brand your instructional techniques & happenings.
https://t.co/lQWXEZ0m8T
Branding & visioning are synonymous. 4 promoting missions & values & guiding the organization
That helps when I search for what is going on in my kids' schools.
A2 School leaders need to model their expectations when it comes to branding.
Great point Angie. That logo & brand can stay with a student for a lifetime
How we behave and treat people is the brand image we create in their minds
Sell your story the way you want it told before someone else does it for you in their own way. https://t.co/CGGUEBCjSi
A1: The only method we can guarantee positivity in the message about our schools is through marketing and branding ourselves.
A2 - I promote my Ss - hashtags , use Facebook & for student work & recognition
Thanks for being here Carol
A2 I struggle with this one myself. I think I know what my brand is, but I dons't know that I push it out there enough.
A2: I need to learn how to do this--I'm not sure how to start, what I should think about. Help!
Brand our successes-become transparent-bring in stakeholders-showcase learning in positive light A1
the roads were too slick to get her 15 miles in tonight...so she's home early
A2 when teachers brand is excellence and rigor, combined with strong relationships, the classroom is "off the charts" popular
Branding is not limited to companies and products but the individual is a core to brand identity
Especially when it unites Ts! Competition can build pride when Ts work together to promote their school https://t.co/03863PkvWC
I hear a lot about competition tonight. I think it can be about helping the schools and districts get better.
a2: find something that quickly engage Ss. I use a Twitter board as an exit ? on door. Ss respond and give feedback. Ts notice.
Troy from MN jumping in tonight. Great idea - develops that focus. https://t.co/NVl3p4H2Wp
A2 A school wide hashtag is an effective branding medium that celebrates your contribution to your school.
Great concept! Our ESS program has one
For visual art teachers a class Instagram account is a great mode of communication & platform to give s's positive recognition
Agree, not all districts fight that battle.Could be about presenting value to comm for things like a levy https://t.co/O6Y5U6rH7D
I hear a lot about competition tonight. I think it can be about helping the schools and districts get better.
A2 by being consistent w/ expectations & putting Ss 1st; establishing a rigorous but nurturing environment https://t.co/XVOGsDeFN7
Q2: How can teachers effectively brand their classrooms & instructional methods? What are some examples you have seen or tried?
A2: is an easy way. No reason Ts shouldn't be using it. Opt-out forms. Snap pics often & share them out.
A2: Social media is quick but also inviting others into the classroom to show what's going on. Pics are great but live is better!
because positivity is infectious-let the culture become one of engagement and A1
This is something that I have seen Ts use through social media, especially Twitter and Instagram. https://t.co/FVIUSKYbg4
A2: I think by sharing what's happening in class, easily brand your instructional techniques & happenings.
https://t.co/lQWXEZ0m8T
Q2: How can Ts effectively brand their classrooms & instructional methods? What are some examples you have seen/tried?
A2: communicating what's going on in class home.I try to update Ps regularly and just talk about school when I see them at events
A2 - Get your teachers on twitter! As they tweet - use the building twitter account to retweet. Parents love seeing pictures!
Q2: T's who talk with S's and design classroom together based on learning expectations and styles are most successful.
Right, Brian. Can act as an integral part of sharing relevant learning activities that our Ss experience
daily goal! Thank you is better than expected
As the only T who teaches what I do in my school, I'm constantly trying to inform others about it! I tweet my students successes
Q2: How can teachers effectively brand their classrooms & instructional methods? What are some examples you have seen or tried?
Social media is an awesome tool, along with other electronic means...but ways to reach those who aren't 'connected'?
A2 If teachers think they have a unique approach, be bold and put your name to it. It could connect with socially savvy students.
A2: Think of evidence u can use to build ur brand but also defend what ur doing n the clsrm. Parent meetings r easy with evidence.
Sharing our student work with the world has made a huge difference in the way our students view work.
A2 I try adding a signature to my emails and having my username the same across platforms.
I am excactly in that boat. I used to do weekly newsletter, but Ps prefer Remind, so now I use that.
A2: let the Ss take the lead, they like to show off and it can help them take pride in their learning
A2: Share your successes and failures with your fellow teachers within the school and through social media. Collaboration!!!
A2 my classroom brand this year is "Discovery". Discover connections, strengths, new perspectives, knowledge, skills.
A2 - Go ahead - give this a look - - proud teacher of inspired students. Give them an audience.
I agree. Gets everyone involved
Real world type of celebrations w community groups: museum openings, historical ventures-connect with community! A2
A2: We also have a presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and a website to promote our message.
A2 we post picts of our Ss doing "Superhero" learning on ClassDojo for Ps to see with captions to show specific S learning
Thanks! We're so hot tonight, it flew right by me.
Right. Competition can make us better, but we can learn from within too.
A2: As an ELA teacher I am trying to help Ss build confidence in their writing this year we tried in the classroom
A2 Ts can brand simply by signage in front of classroom: where they went to school, degrees, majors.
Tells story & inspires kids!
I like to blow up Twitter and Instagram with school events! Not so much about my class but def about school!
We have some amazing Ts that video their lessons and post online for review at home! So valuable in many ways
A2: Area for me to improve, marketing myself makes me uncomfortable at times, looking for specific strategies!
A2:be diligent about showcasing what you & your Ss do in & out of class. Get a class #, or Twitter/Instagram page going.
A2: celebration of their successes. Allow the Ss to help with the story and allow the ownership to take place
Q2: Start and end the day with a consistent greeting or closure. is my expectation of our school family
Good idea, Brian. Hope all is well. A2
Yes -We too often think that PR is someone else's job when we can all do a great job of telling OUR story https://t.co/jlzUOETPyw
A2 Ts can brand simply by signage in front of classroom: where they went to school, degrees, majors.
Tells story & inspires kids!
A2 Snap pics of students engaging in the type of tasks you want to see throughout the school -will help model for others
Building strong relationships helps build a strong brand. Students creating a positive buzz can be a brand builder in itself.
You guys have to get it out there. Blog more, share more pics, make videos - share the great stuff you do!
I struggle with even marketing and branding within my own district/building
Late to the party. I was at the 2nd of 3 concerts this week. Thanks for being there!
A2: Art teachers at created Instagram pigs to showcase student work. Ss love it! Real easy to do, costs nothing!
Like the idea of video newsletter! What program would you use? https://t.co/3rKcqTZ0cv
A2: Take traditional newsletter and pump it up with tech (videos, vines, clips, , blogs, etc that showcase students
Like this emphasis on writing in connection with this hashtag
getting more teachers on Twitter is essential! Great way to share and stay connected.
A2-we brand our classroom w/ a simple consistent message that connects w/ the work Ss do each dayTweet-insta-email-remind-blog
You sound like my principal
A2. There are certain things that we do that we name and brand in our own way. I can’t share any names though:)
trying to get into blogging but struggling with where to start. One of my personal goals. https://t.co/e4g7SZg7Rr
You guys have to get it out there. Blog more, share more pics, make videos - share the great stuff you do!
A2 cont. this allows Ps & Ss to know what 2 expect and demonstrates passion for the learning process
so true. A happy student is a happy parent
YES! YES!
We have to take time to celebrate victories large & small.
It's called relationship-building.
https://t.co/Nt5hv4C7mv
A2: celebration of their successes. Allow the Ss to help with the story and allow the ownership to take place
How to effectively brand my classroom & instruction--maybe I need to better understand term "branding."
Love this collaborative approach to learning! Share ideas through learning sessions at staff mtgs & PD. https://t.co/F5rUEbObk7
A2: Share your successes and failures with your fellow teachers within the school and through social media. Collaboration!!!
I still send out a Blog each week with school info and other gen Ed info. Widely read by Ps
Do parents know about it?
Embed them into a blog or webpage or just even a youtube page.
Teachers could tweet out the learning target for the day to encourage learning conversations at home!
Each week parents get an email from us at 9:30am on Fridays - telling them what we just did and what we are going to do.
A2 Invite parents, on a regular basis, into the classroom to experience lessons with their children.
I run into this, too. Some of it stems from misconceptions over what gifted ed is.
Thanks for being here Troy
Difficult teachers have difficult parents ;)
Teachers effectively "brand" their teaching by sharing info & by inviting colleagues inside their classrooms--true collaboration
******* Q3 is up in one minute *******
I like that. How did you decide on your simple message?
A2:groups & clubs show your brand all over the community. Work w/them so they learn how to make it a positive endeavor
Love it! Great way to show art to others
A2 what I view as most important to branding oneself is authenticity, no matter the situation, be real
they've seen it, but my school hasn't caught up to the Twitter world yet, so I'm fighting that battle.
A2: A teacher's brand can be, what do I do that causes kids to WANT to come to my class?
Q3: How can we brand our schools & classes to people who did not have a positive educational experience when they were in school?
A2: Definitely agree. Not only does it promote your work & vision to community, but also makes Ss proud! https://t.co/xqB5hUKHEi
A2: Social media is quick but also inviting others into the classroom to show what's going on. Pics are great but live is better!
it's important to attend events (which you do) - good stuff
take care of this moment--it was born out of a need for everyone to do just that-
Okay, this helps me better define branding.
Good point . The veneer of insincerity wears away quickly.
Be real! Be authentic! Be you!
https://t.co/VoeGXWQ9he
A2 what I view as most important to branding oneself is authenticity, no matter the situation, be real
I see many possibilities with this and the inclusion of celebration photos of best practices
There it is. That is where I need to start.
Must show them first that we care, then allow them to see educational AND real world value in learning https://t.co/JFtEmmNKt6
Q3: How can we brand our schools & classes to people who did not have a positive educational experience when they were in school?
A brand is an image placed in the mind of stakeholders. An identity
Agree. Ss voice & Ss led learning allows Ss to personalize their own learning & pace. Ts that are flexible gain respect.
A3 listen to them, be empathetic, ask reflective Qs during conversations, don't make assumptions https://t.co/EQ0Qq4eSsk
Q3: How can we brand our schools & classes to people who did not have a positive educational experience when they were in school?
I've been looking at edublogs and it seems easy enough. Now to figure out topics.
A3: get parents into school for positive experiences
Building relationships lead to classroom cultures of trust
A3: Invite them to the planning and decision-making table. Schools are generally run by those who loved school. Most kids don't.
Mr D's hot jokes tonight!
A3. before we brand, ask those who had a bad experience & why. It probably came down to learning styles.
sounds like a statement room. This is what makes this class special
Go deeper. How else can you get it out there?
A3 - Reach out and initiate conversations. Invitations to conferences, school events, & into the classroom. Offer school tours.
a3: learn what made their experiences so negative and have them develop ways to fix them. Make them a positive asset!
A3: People need to be needed. Think about how we can help them gain a feeling of self-efficacy.
A3. Invite them in. Make them a part of it. Show them you are different!
A3 This is where empathy and mindfulness kicks in. Acknowledge their experience and challenge them to be open-minded.
A3: I still blv most Ps genuinely wnt their kids to succeed. May not b college-prof career. Is there room for their kid's success?
Mr D's got jokes tonight!
A3 Friendly parent call homes where we focus on positive Ss moments can help.
so many people fight it! Twitter is such an awesome resource and platform! I love it now...
A3. Make the disenfranchised part of the branding experience.
A3 I tell those that had a negative experience: "I design my class with you in mind."
A3 - We need to "show" the love of learning. Many want to see, not just read it. Student voices need to be heard. They eat it up.
A3: be inviting them in! Calling, emails, events, etc. inviting them to be party of their kids' edu journey
A3Start w/ connecting branding efforts to purposefully reach those who didnt have pos https://t.co/ZCGcgWCeB5 we want their input
A2 Their teaching style should meet modern standard and go beyond to make teaching and learning very simple than we use to have.
I think this is a good topic for the edcamp!
A3: bring them in! Create an Open House during the school day. Let them get involved!
A3: bring them in! Create an Open House during the school day. Let them get involved!
I love that last part "don't make assumptions". Prob part of the reason their school experience was never to start
A3-first we must build a positive relationship with them if possible. Be real! Be honest!
It's sad we still need to defend at times. Aren't we better than that?
Agree. Must extend the invitation and show that we welcome them.
A3 it is important to show them that an education experience can be positive, supportive, and fun! Show Ps and Ss love they need!
