Hey . Little tardy today. Megan from CT.
A1: reading, running around outside using my imagination, summer school for fun

Small world, ! I coached basketball at East for 4 years.
A1: Summer reading. I don’t remember all the summer math packets Ss get nowadays! https://t.co/eQQR7kfWIc
Q1: When you were younger, how did you keep learning in the summer? (academic or otherwise)
Hey all, Michael from here
Hey Megan, glad to have another here on
A1b spent a lot of time at the town public library.
A1: Learned problem solving, collaboration, and perseverance thru team sports.
A1 - we did summer BookIt - I think that's what it was called. My school had required summer reading
A1: Using my imagination, playing with friends, and reading!
A1: Problem solving at camp and working on projects before I knew they were called this, as well as Jeopardy Jr. on NES
being a good doesn't allow me to post a more accurate gif, right ;)
A1: Family would take trips to various locations where we would explore museums, sites. Big on reading as well!
A1: Lots of reading, exploring outside, making up games with the neighborhood kids!
A1: never had summer packets growing up…can’t figure when they came to be..summer was time to explore other interests
Hey Katrina! Family will be up in Chattanooga in mid July!
A1b: And the bookmobile. Ah the smell of books on a hot unventilated bus in the summer.
My mom was a teacher so we had "enrichment" activities along with playing outside.
A1: My sisters and I would do our local library’s summer reading challenge every year.
A1 Went to library for books, played board games for prob solv/crit think skills, too long ago to remember ;)
A1: reading and swimming with friends(social skills are important to learn too).
Looks like reading and hands on learning were big summer learning themes for us. Still relevant today
Yes, the wires and wireless have ears.
A1: so seeing social skills as summer skills..thoughts?
Alex - from NJ - avoiding the indoor rain - glad to be at tonight
A1 Lucky to learn by being outdoors almost everyday! Maine woods and beaches are filled w great adventures
Looking for great ways for an Admind to motivate MS Ss . Suggestions?
Were you a happy or sad clown?
the on button is usually on top
Hi Everyone, Zach from Florida here!
A1 School was not learning. It was just school & grades, so summer was when I was free to feed my curiosity.
Board Games rock! I still love Sorry and Monopoly...it's all about strategy!
Thanks for joining in Zach
A1: I'm lucky I was young enough to have internet most of my life, it taught me more over the summer than I learned in school!
True that...so sorry to hear about your flooded server room :-(
Social skills can be as important as any learning we do in school.
A1: Doing! Experiencing, traveling, museum visits. And recreational reading.
There is something to be said about board games!
A1: I don't remember in particular. I always liked to write, read, explore and play. Not sure anything was assigned.
Popping in late! Susan Bearden, co-moderator, enjoying the lovely CT weather on vacation tonight!
A1: What did you do in the summer that you didn’t do in the school year?
A1 Visited the museums in Chicago! The Shedd Aquarium is my favorite
Just arrived home and jumping in. Laurie from San Marcos 3rd grd and tech lead tchr
Travel also contributed to my Summer education though I didn't realize until much later.
oh no! I had an HVAC unit that was in the wall and decided to start spewing condensation!
A1: Summer School! Where I learned to type, among other things!
Q2 coming up in 1 minute…
I love It. I am not one for horror movies but that one I love
social skills are important! I see many Ss who do not interact with peers during the year.
I "played" school a lot as well. You just triggered that memory. https://t.co/7rssmJBdmv
My mom was a teacher so we had "enrichment" activities along with playing outside.
That means you are missing
the Shedd is awesome but The Museum of Sci & Industry was always my favorite!
A1: reading, summer library programs, enrichment summer school, lots of creative play with friends. Outside all day long.
I am happy to be away from right now :)
A1 I built, imagined, created games, played games, wandered, experimented, daydreamed, competed, cooperated...
Q2: For those who need learning support, how do they currently get that in the summer so as to avoid regression?
A1b: I recall making my own "roller coaster" out of found items in our barn when I was younger.
A1b: I recall making my own "roller coaster" out of found items in our barn when I was younger.
I'm Vickie , Pooped, but proud principal in Tx
Yep. Those days aren't good.
OMG yes! Granted, I remember it being time….
Kuddos to you for joining in
Dan, business teacher from St. Louis popping in for a bit.
A1) my family traveled one long trip in our RV. I've been to places like DC, Canada, and the Rockies.
A2 Right now? They dont, other than ESY for SPED kids, and even that is a VERY small population
This is my dream https://t.co/sstYmfw7bv
A1) my family traveled one long trip in our RV. I've been to places like DC, Canada, and the Rockies.
A2: Sadly many do not. There was a good NYT piece about this recently.
Traveled, swam, performed "experiments"that always went awry, experienced the world with less structure.
A1: I did TONS of reading. My idea of fun was picking a shelf in the library children's section and reading all the books!
A2 lots of summer school opportunities. Public library often offers help for free. Online tools * learning.
Camping, hiking, swimming, etc. reading lots of reading, playing outside for all hours w/o supervision.
A1: I stayed active with sports and being around friends
A2: I am sending ideas via this summer. Summer school for targeted Ss. Tutoring. Hoping Ps also do things.
Can't draw a thing but was fascinated by the Art Institute.
A1c: I learned how to use Power Point in 1995 during Summer School in an U.S. History course.
A1 I did not read a single book until the summer I was injured (age 19) & read a book a day for 40+ days.
That is the best type of learning sometimes, . No effort just absorbing info!
A2: Luckily summer school is offered to quite a few, focus is on Ss of poverty hurt most by summer slide and lack of opportunity
a2: I am on the hunt to improve the summer learning engagement we provide our LD learners, and hope to share to greater
A: wondering why school districts don't collaborate more in this? https://t.co/T2HaorMxLK
Q2: For those who need learning support, how do they currently get that in the summer so as to avoid regression?
Q2: State of GA provided Myon reader to every student for the summer. My system is also using Plato for summer reinforcement
a2: with so many learning apps/sites there has to be a better way to engage learners in need
Living with my grandparents also helped. Lots of reading, building, & museum visits
A1 I watched killer clowns from outer space and loved it in the summer. Learned so much about glitter https://t.co/LalLSOVI06
Summer is a great time to learn something new, something that interests you, for who you are, not what you're expected to be.
I let parents know that our teachers tutor and that I am available all summer to give suggestions https://t.co/EQAEbybQBj
Q2: For those who need learning support, how do they currently get that in the summer so as to avoid regression?
summer homework packets (ugh), summer school, etc. Leave the poor children alone. Let them play and read a book or 10.
For adults too! That's my goal for this summer.
A2: Kids need opportunities to ask questions and investigate answers. I don't know any program that does that for kids
A2: We make our online programs available for Ss to use over the summer. (, ).
I provided a leveled summer book list and various activities to complete IF DESIRED
A2: I feel like summer schoolwork could take away from the vacation aspect of summer. Having a break can be good, too.
A2: offering online leveled readers for parents to access for S. Need to have more parent training though. Ideas?
A1: I spent my summers at the Jersey shore - learned all about how to fish, crab, clam, seamanship, entrpreneuship - all :)
A2: we have summer school for ELLkids and sped. We are just starting an enrichment program with scholarships available...
Be careful just pushing to prevent the summer slide
is there a particular tool that you’ve chosen?
Summer school wont help until we make schools work for kids of poverty the rest of the year first. Most don't
has a great deal for summer. Hoping many Ss take advantage of the free reading.
A2b: Also creating On-boarding courses for Ss to use over the summer-materials on School Citizenship, Google Apps, Helpful tips
A2: For Ss, Summer School & Summer Reading and Coding; for Ts, professional learning opportunities, found and created
our district does that too - but Ss have to log in and actually do the lessons
A2: I think it has to be fun - and is it relay limited to only those who don't want to fall behind - what about getting ahead?
Q2: IXL for math and reading. Summer reading. Many of our teachers offer tutoring and we have on campus tutors too
this is a great idea! Mobile learning that is available 24/7 https://t.co/HXzsHopbYX
A2: We make our online programs available for Ss to use over the summer. (, ).
Mine got me secretly addicted to litebot last wknd
Learn what games your Ss are playing. That way you can meet them on their turf. And have fun.
Any excuse to play games, huh?
...the state government of GA gave all S. Access? https://t.co/S4iYCWNL7O
Q2: State of GA provided Myon reader to every student for the summer. My system is also using Plato for summer reinforcement
agree, more should be done- but at least these kids are getting some structure and a meal
The second stage is to rely on localsource revenues to fund schools.
Yes! needs thoughtfulness for skills needed and content appropriate https://t.co/nmQ0qDZe9a
Be careful just pushing to prevent the summer slide
A2: let students cook, create, and plan your family vacation. Every subject can be covered.
My mother was a single mother, I either hung out on the streets or my relatives.
A2) we have 3 k-5 summer school programs running in our district. 1 at our low SES school incorporates lots of field trips!
Q3 coming up in 1 minute…
My district growing up offered all kinds of courses during summer school including enrichment and required courses
A2: If would just make an iOS version of Science Journal, I think I can make my daughter's summer amazing!
Yes - and just giving a student a device isn't the answer
A3: participate - engage your audience-connect-curate resources & post relevant info
The first few questions address those learners who struggle, then we address the learners who just want to grow
yep. It's a generic login so Ts cant track Ss. But the opportunity is there.
A2: Research hasn't found an answer so I figure the tried & true read, explore, ?, & create works! https://t.co/5stqT5gJ2J
Q2: For those who need learning support, how do they currently get that in the summer so as to avoid regression?
Q3: With today’s how can Ss with learning disabilities be provided reinforcement of skills with differentiation?
A2 My daughter just proposed that each of us in the family do a science project this summer & present our findings at the end.
I was almost always 100 miles from my school for the summer. We had some park programs, but nothing like there is now
Love this! Even better that it is Student-directed
I do agree as well, but somehow we have to make schools work for all. Huge gaps for kids of poverty.
A2b: We also hosted two weeks of STREAM-Fit and mini camps through our extended learning programs.
Libraries often have some tutoring for students.
I may steal this for my own use! https://t.co/mLjLWMwDe6
A2 My daughter just proposed that each of us in the family do a science project this summer & present our findings at the end.
I have to fight my own child about doing online summer programs.
A3:tools like provide differentiated learning for ELA and/or Math
A3: Using tools that adjust to the student’s progress. https://t.co/Yx47Oom9Kr
Q3: With today’s how can Ss with learning disabilities be provided reinforcement of skills with differentiation?
whoops, misunderstood your first tweet! I understand now :-) Maybe a webinar or summer parent night wld work?
That's an amazing idea! Will they be graded? :-)
A2 I love that my daughter doesn't think of scientific inquiry as schoolwork, but as a tool for fun & learning year round.
It's so important to encourage
Is it watching videos and answering multiple choice questions?
Community programs like & boys and girls club provide more learning that is applied. A great way to continue learning
this is the crux of the question
A3: With such a large variety tech tools, Ts should be able to find a tool that will meet each Ss need to aid their learning
A3: provide Ps w/ tools to personalize their learning w/ specific tasks & activities to target needs.
A3: Simple I know, but a teacher curated YouTube playlist of skills can go a long way- Ss can rewind, pause rewatch
A3 Ss need interest based choices and support. We can "reinforce" all year long, but if Ss arent motivated/engaged, they're done
levels the playing field.
I had a wheelchair-bound S who rocked his online class. He's unrestricted there.
A3: so many tools to support student investigation & discovery - no matter their instructional level
A3:should summer be for math and reading enrichment only>
yes....they opened access, but a lot not publicized well so that all schools got the word out to Ss and Ps.
A3) multiple modalities can be incorporated into tasks and challenges for Ss w/learning disabilities using apps and video
A3 So many tools avail, Ts can find something for all Ss, targeted to needs and interests, more engaged
My brother was a quadriplegic Assistive tech and the internet opened up a whole new universe for him!
I'd like to see more use of text to speech tools, like Google doc has built in. & Free https://t.co/DN0BzJV5TA
Q3: With today’s how can Ss with learning disabilities be provided reinforcement of skills with differentiation?
we've become addicted to this summer. We read together, listen to stories, & watch related videos
That's the problem... communication is critical!!
We know some learners need to not take a break from learning, how do we help them in summer, without taxing them to exhaustion
We did not have face to face orientations. News blasted it, info was on website, and kids were sent home with the info
A3: Leveled text, tools to help make learning more visible, engagement options
A3: tools and apps should actually get to the point where parents can easily select and support what their child needs
Or in other words is summer learning driven by NCLB?
Not at all. Think of all the skills learned in theater, outdoor ed, robotics...Enrichment is enrichment https://t.co/C3QP17tkjA
A3:should summer be for math and reading enrichment only>
A3: summer a great time to engage Ss with to help themselves so they can go into the next year with independence
A3: It begins with Ts identifying specific needs of individual Ss, not programs claiming to address the needs of S "types."
. We need them. -based groups can be heavenly. https://t.co/Rm8Ch6jVj5
Community programs like & boys and girls club provide more learning that is applied. A great way to continue learning
Thanks for the idea. I have a voracious reader!
Q4 coming up in 1 minute…
For many learners, summer is the time to explore other interests and areas of expertise
so often by pushing our Ss to learn learn learn we end up turning them off to learning :-(
The models need to change - summer programs are even further behind schools in transformation - most are sit and get
Is this required? A book of choice and building with lego or math thru art sounds more fun
Q4: What are other skills Ss should use summer to learn or foster?
Yes thus we need to find those other paths to engage!
what kind of visible engagement options are you thinking of?
A2 Any of you in one of the cities of learning? How is that working for summer student learning?
A4 Problem solving, inquiry and discovery related skills
I will say this last 7 days of school it’s more about , , and problem solving w/
A4: Definitely creativity....that is my focus with my children this summer. My 1st grader did too much HW and sit and get for me
Writing, planning, Creating, editing videos, websites, blogs, etc (shows learning and is fun!) etx.
A3: A student and parent resource: a flowchart of assistive tools and skills/ needs they address.
A4: Kids should be learning social skills and building natural curiosity in the summer. And maybe to just "be"
One choice book, one community book in some grades. Read as much as you want in K-2.
A4: During summer Ss should be learning their passions, something they can enjoy learning about just for the sake of learning
A4: Social skills beyond that transfer back to digital world, problem solving in real and imaginative contexts
A4: Learning how to solve authentic problems - academically (I wonder?) & Socually (Sportmanship etc) https://t.co/Ub3nqlbIRH
Amen, and amen some more.
A4: Observation, wonder, problem solve, play, conversation, thought.
A4: Entrepreneurship, creativity, resourcefulness, imagination, collaboration - all those things you have time for in summer
A4 Ss should go on adventures, build with their hands, make paper masks using imagination and write notes to friends
A4 Great questn. Curiosity, discovery, an inquiry. Do things outside of comfort https://t.co/ohq8VWvbNt
Q4: What are other skills Ss should use summer to learn or foster?
A4: Agree with the creativity aspect. An increasingly valuable skill in all paths of life.
A-B-C
Always
Be
Curious
Summer is a great time to experiment, try something new, and learn from it. Without grades.
a4: for many Ss summer is time to explore things love but don’t experience during academic year:
A4 Many schools do not have a venue to nurture agency & autonomy, so summer is a time for that to happen through self-direction
keyword ! We need to make sure we are using to engage Ss not just give them something else to do
I wish we found better ways to build that exploration even in small burst throughout the school year
Meet people in their community and ask questions
How do we nurture agency & autonomy in the summer for kids who are not naturally inclined?
A4: Finding and exploring their passions. Too many Ss when asked to describe themselves tend to rattle off awards not interests
A4: sports, drama, music, technology, etc.. summer opens the doors to go beyond academics
A4 Kids need to be kids. They should pursue their passions and learn how to comeback from failure outside of the classroom
A4: Ss should take nature walks, grow a garden, visit something new, and play.
A4b: Summer is also a great time to learn about time management and responsibility when it's less imposed by a school structure.
A4 Time to relax but also explore, be social & reflect past year and think fwd some, make new connections, have fun
YESSSS This is so important, we need to put passion back into learning, this has been left behind lately.
I've done last Feb. It was a student run production. It was great. Think , wrapped into 1
Summer to me is the time to explore outside traditional learning, so is there a balance of no regression and growth?
Peer communities where self-directed learning is the norm, what I call guided self-directed learning...
A4: social skills, passion projects, physical skills (being in Florida...kids need to know how to swim)! https://t.co/ForqwtesEG
Q4: What are other skills Ss should use summer to learn or foster?
A4 I always used summer to remind myself that I love reading. Hope Ss do the same. Books + beaches = happiness
You can. Talk to your library media specialist. We love to explore. Or at least I do. :)
Technology should be purposeful in the learning process https://t.co/5BsDxChfoP
keyword ! We need to make sure we are using to engage Ss not just give them something else to do
Perhaps, provide focus and purpose that expands possibilities rather than restricting them.
A4: Ss should learn the skill of relaxing & having fun. They have their whole adult life to work 24/7. https://t.co/UQV8Khhgdy
I think the biggest win for summer learning would be not using and school terminology and just issue challenges to kids
Summer is a time to explore, be curious, and learn to truly foster and grow relationships
it is the plan next year...we are getting a new MS...starting a makerspace :)
If kids need 2 be doing something structured over the summer, get a "thing", and do what recently said - Figure it out.
Yes! Learning the beauty of the word "balance" - a skill many adults have yet to master!
I have been able to do this with student exhibition projects. Curate your knowledge!
Invite kids to design family outings, co-plan trips, map out game nights & meals, etc.
I'd like to consider as well. Wonder when the chat is???
A4 Kids should be kids. They don’t get enough time to be that. I always loved my summers. https://t.co/yAho3vbafI
Q4: What are other skills Ss should use summer to learn or foster?
Love this idea…challenge kids to do something so it’s learning without being so school like!
A:4 in jk/sk =go to the park! Learn how to play. Take turns/play with new kids make friends!
Q5 coming up in 1 minute…
I love this idea! This puts students in a leadership role https://t.co/E9F9AZD3Ch
Invite kids to design family outings, co-plan trips, map out game nights & meals, etc.
A4 Agree Terry. A hike in woods or trot on beach.(w/a device to capture pics? ) Then a blog! https://t.co/nqNJbGXI3i
A4: Observation, wonder, problem solve, play, conversation, thought.
is always 8pmET on Mondays
is every Monday at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT. Happening now :) Join the conversation!
Q5:What tools and resources can help with Q4? Local learning options?
A5) teamwork with sports and performing arts and grit as the try something new like no training wheels! https://t.co/mPH2FhI4qV
and each chat has a different population depending on topic and wee - part of the variety
A4 Tumblr, Pinterest, blog, any presentation on whatever they love to do in summer would be curatorial and maker
Great suggestions! https://t.co/BDtlSsK4NS
Invite kids to design family outings, co-plan trips, map out game nights & meals, etc.
That's awesome. Kids need to be able to express themselves like this.
I encourage my Ss to take videos and pics while on vacation and create an iMovie/trailer to surprise their family.
to capture their thought and wondering to search for As to Qs to tell a story
Google Maps for vacation planning, iPhone/pod/pad for photos, iMovie to showcase, get kids involved at home
resources for apps and can be found on and for all learners
I see as great summer learning opportunity with
A5: GHO or with family/friends to talk, conversation
Can I double, triple <3 this?!
A5 Omeka Neatline & Storyline JS are great for presenting map of summer travels/activities. Pair well w/ narrative assignment
A5: Get your kids creating- Blogging, YouTubing, Coding, Making, building whatever sparks their interest
So many tools to document summer fun:
A5 Can look on local schools, IUnits, in Pgh
A5: https://t.co/sZYBpj3drP , Scratch, Snap Circuits, Raspberry Pi, BrainPOP and low tech crayon, paper, and glitter works too :)
A5 Neighbors, family, friends, the backyard, scrap wood, cardboard boxes, the toolbox, bikes, everything in the kitchen... :-)
A5: Provide a way for Ss to share about their summer, connect with T and others- , shared Google Doc, ,
A5 Mobile devices are great for taking picture & video and writing short blog posts of summer adventures https://t.co/U2fAg0ugw9
A5: Yep, paper, markers, tape, glue, scrap wood, string, broken stuff, leaves, fields https://t.co/Dac8FtLV83
A5: https://t.co/sZYBpj3drP , Scratch, Snap Circuits, Raspberry Pi, BrainPOP and low tech crayon, paper, and glitter works too :)
Hopefully my robots will come in. That and and
Q6 coming up in 1 minute…
A5 Tinkerplay by Autodesk to introduce students to 3D printing
A5: I'd like to have total student control of choosing topic(s) of interest & use internet to get info! https://t.co/ayUs0VVA7G
Q5:What tools and resources can help with Q4? Local learning options?
STEM options w/ Global Ed component - connect with students across the world while learning! https://t.co/XPZWZVRLCa
Q6: What skills(s) do you plan on working on as an educator? Tools/Resources to help?
Check out the resources being shared on tonight for
A5 family telescope & microscope snagged from a garage sale, random items from garage sales, & an iPod to capture the fun :-).

A6: any I can get to will help me grow
A6: 3D Printing, Drone flying, and Google & Apple Certifications https://t.co/80lxowSnYd
Q6: What skills(s) do you plan on working on as an educator? Tools/Resources to help?
Sure! Some will have to wait until fall. Unless I break down and buy a tablet...
A6 Interested in digital leadership and its ability to transform self, organization and community
A6: AR, Google Classroom, robotics and create a staff dev. tech olympics...
A6: Always working on leveraging mobile and byod solutions.
Looks intriguing. Have fun with it.
A6: Connecting digital learning potential to brain research and finding tools to support
I brought home my robots to play with and learn. I was hoping to get a https://t.co/MERXzrf3pI PD in, but apparently not summer
Sorry to miss it! I am not in FL at the moment or I would have gone.
A6: Try to get a foundation of ideas for legit real world PBL lessons that really hit the standards
A6: Want to get more into Versal for revisiting concepts and absenteeism
We are having fun with squishy circuits. kitchen dough recipe, cheap leds, batteries
A6 trying to figure out how to use twine games to deliver interactive content for students
Connect with your local , in your community.
I went to and am very excited about As well as my first https://t.co/9LWlOMuhSn
Sorry to miss it! I am not in FL at the moment or I would have gone.
All curriculum is online. You can do it - just check it out :)
I backed the kit. Getting 2. Will replenish with kitchen dough though.
Our K-6 students love PBL! Buck Institute For Education is a great resource. https://t.co/KJBm8qvCW6
A6: Try to get a foundation of ideas for legit real world PBL lessons that really hit the standards
I have, I would like to attend the sessions, Just the kind of learner I am. https://t.co/UdsV7xwlK2
All curriculum is online. You can do it - just check it out :)
I have too many expensive tools on my wish list
I attended the session also after trying it at school. It's fun in a group learning together :)
What do you do with them? What grade(s)?
Yeah, I'll have mine too. along with and a few other things. Need to explore and play.
So far explored how circutis work and creativity with them. 2-5th after school class
Sadly I will be out of town that week and can't make it.
