Hi. I teach 2nd grade in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Heading to @NCCE_EdTech this week. Recently completed my Master's degree in Learning and Technology from @WGU#LeadLAP
Good morning, #LeadLAP! Joining in from Missouri as my wife sits beside me watching #FixerUpper. K-8 superintendent and principal. She says I need this chat.
A1: Being present in the moment benefits leaders/educators because we can't fix yesterday and we can't control tomorrow. THIS is the only moment we have to live. #LEADlap
A1: It causes us to be able to slow down, focus on those around us and then immerse ourselves in our work. Real relationships aren't built without mindful practices #LeadLAP
A1. Reflection is key to leveling the mind and taking time to be in the moment. Since decisions come rapid fire, it is essential to take a moment and press pause. #LeadLAP
A1: So many benefits to #mindfulness for ALL; I love that it brings our minds back to free it from the distractions that threaten to derail us, to help us unwrap the present and keep us in the moment. #leadlap
A1: Being in the moment allows to really experience all of the nuances of your day. It allows you to keep your purpose in mind and keeps you from getting caught in vicious cycles of unproductive thought. #LeadLAP
A1: When I am not in the moment, I have the tendency to overlook reality. I cannot interact with humans on an authentic level if I am not able to be mindful of the realities that surround me. #LeadLAP
A1- being mindful and in the moment lets us focus on what's right there in front of us- usually students or staff... give them your attention- everything else can wait. #leadlap
Good Morning #leadlap peeps!!!
Excited to join my buddy @thezenteacher today as he steers the ship! Love his books #zenteacher and #sanctuaries by @dbc_inc !!!
They remind me to calm this busy, creative mind & soul!!
Let’s do this thing!!
A1. Reflection is key to leveling the mind and taking time to be in the moment. Since decisions come rapid fire, it is essential to take a moment and press pause. #LeadLAP
A1 As the leader of my Pre-K class mindfulness and being present is everything. We slow down to get our bodies calm. They don’t know it but it’s for my good, too. Helps me slow down and be in the moment with them. @GoNoodle has been a fun way to be mindful. #leadlap
A1: Faced with countless decisions & situations each day, we have to train our brains to be present. Mindfulness helps us be aware of our own needs, be the best versions of ourselves and ultimately be present for those we serve. #LeadLAP
A1. Being mindful allows to reflect, see all perspectives and understand how leaders can be so impactful and how much influence we have on others. Reflection is how we grow. #LeadLAP
A1: Allows leaders to provide the attention and focus to the task and relationships in front of them, while eliminating the noise of everything else. #LeadLAP
A1: Mindfulness keeps us focused on the real issue at hand. If I can reach mindfulness, I can calm my mind and stop trying to think about all the other choices on the plate. #LeadLAP
A1: So many benefits to #mindfulness for ALL; I love that it brings our minds back to free it from the distractions that threaten to derail us, to help us unwrap the present and keep us in the moment. #leadlap
A1: Being in the moment helps leaders make stronger relationships because we are focusing on "our" people and they know we care by listening to them.
#leadlap
A1: Being in the moment allows to really experience all of the nuances of your day. It allows you to keep your purpose in mind and keeps you from getting caught in vicious cycles of unproductive thought. #LeadLAP
A1. It’s everything. Being present is now one of the highest compliments you can give a family, S, or T. Being mindful of your reactions to an off comment or hurtful comment shows great control which leaders need. #LeadLAP
A1: As our lives become filled with technology, the distractions we face increase exponentially. Our ability to focus has diminished. Our need to think clearly to make complex decisions has not. More than ever, leaders need to train themselves to be fully present. #LeadLAP
Mindfulness is especially powerful for stepping out of the anxiety of the moment. This helps leaders to assess as they go rather than a constant produce and respond scenario. #LeadLAP
A1: When I am not in the moment, I have the tendency to overlook reality. I cannot interact with humans on an authentic level if I am not able to be mindful of the realities that surround me. #LeadLAP
A1: Mindfulness helps center leaders, teachers and students on the next steps they can take immediately. It also helps leaders build trust. If you are distracted and not mindful when we meet, then I will think you don't care issues I want to discuss.... #leadLAP
A1: Mindfulness allows us to be in the present moment without judgement. It allows us to notice what is front of us instead of holding ourselves to expectations from the past or future. By taking mindful moments like this, we have the ability reduce our levels of stress. #leadlap
A1: It allows us to be fully present as listeners, problem solvers, and teammates with a clear focus on the now/present, not clouded by things out of our control or yet to come. #LEADLAP
A1. Being mindful allows to reflect, see all perspectives and understand how leaders can be so impactful and how much influence we have on others. Reflection is how we grow. #LeadLAP
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership?
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership? #leadlap
A1: Mindful leaders are able not only to notice those priceless moments w/Ss or staff, but to also seize them (the moments, not the Ss or staff...that would be wrong). Not only can it bring peace for the leader, but can bring joy others. #LeadLAP#Sanctuaries
A2: If you're intentional about your choices, goals, and purpose, you have a much higher chance of reaching the goals and moving toward where you want to go. #LEADlap
A1: I often get so caught up in “what could be” and let the positives of the moment slip by unrecognized or under appreciated. My desire for getting better can overshadow the good of now. Teachers need me to be more in the now. This helps the journey forward. #LeadLAP
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership? #leadlap
A1: Mindfulness helps us be able to “show up” for our colleagues, our students & ourselves. Showing up allows us to compassionately and wisely respond to the people in front of us...and perhaps “brighten their day”. #LEADLAP#KidsAreWorthIt#BeTheOne#Mindfulness@thezenteacher
A2- Being INTENTIONAL allows you to keep your priorities- I try to be intentional and make all decisions based on what is good for kids and aligns with our mission. Helps keep us moving in the right direction and always with purpose. #LeadLAP
A2: Things are going to happen; do we want them to happen by chance or choice? Design or default?
Intentionality is like front-loading and pre-correction; it's a bit of an insurance policy, a safety net to fall into and back on.
#leadlap
A1: There are so many benefits to mindfulness and being present in the moment, but one that stands out is allowing us to have focus, especially during conversations with teachers, staff, students, and parents. This aspect of mindful shows value of others & builds trust. #leadlap
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership? #leadlap
A2 doing things silly nilly will garner support from no one. If your teachers see you in action doing purposeful work they will be more likely to follow you. #LeadLAP
I’ve been working on mindfulness in my teaching more lately by checking my motives or purpose. I’m learning that sometimes I’m pushing a project or assignment that Ss already understand or need a different method, just bc it’s something we did last year. #LeadLAP
A2: leadership, by definition, needs to be strategic. We need to know where we are leading, otherwise we are just a rudderless ship. That’s not leadership #leadLAP
A2: What's the purpose? is my mantra. When we are mindful of the purpose, our actions will have more meaning for learning and for culture. If you can't define the purpose then you may be wasting time. We only have so much and our students' time is too valuable #LeadLAP
Welcome to the #LEADLAP Chat! I'm your host Dan Tricarico, author of THE ZEN TEACHER. Please introduce yourself, tell us what you teach, and where you're from. So glad you're here!
a1: Being in the moment allows leaders the time to wonder, reflect, and appreciate. When we aren’t in the moment we lose sight of the ability to move in and out of all three. #leadLAP
A1 Being ‘in the moment’ allows us to stay focused and not rush to judgement or decisions. Having a purpose for what we do during those moments. #leadlap
A1: being and recognizing the present moment with a clear mind. It’s necessary even if it means closing your door for 5 mins, to reflect and be mindful of the day or situations in front of you #LeadLAP#mindfullness
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership? #leadlap
A1: Everyone can get lost in the day to day of schedules and tasks but in order to help those you serve you must take the time to be present in what is happening at the moment. This will allow you to better address the needs of your school. #LeadLAP
A2: There are so many shiny objects coming at you in the world of education! Being intentional forces you to take a minute to ensure that the decision you make aligns with the mission you are working toward. #LeadLAP
A1: Mindfulness keeps us focused on the real issue at hand. If I can reach mindfulness, I can calm my mind and stop trying to think about all the other choices on the plate. #LeadLAP
A2: Engineering the environment for success is so important so that you don't have to constantly put out fires or clean up crises. Begin with the end in mind and the journey can divert, but you can get back on target. #LeadLAP
A1: I think of @thezenteacher description of "present moment awareness" in The Zen Teacher. and the Beginners Mind - practice of approaching a situation with an open mind, vulnerable hear, willingness to learn. The beginning of being a leader! #leadlap
A2: Purposeful leadership has direction & focus, a means to a clear end goal. We can be intentional in big & small ways, from really leaning in & listening in a conversation to setting lofty school/district goals. #leadlap
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership? #leadlap
A2: Being intentional is imperative especially when it comes to leadership! As a leader, you are modeling what is important in the work you are doing. Do all things on purpose and with a purpose. Time is too limited not to be intentional. #leadlap
A2: Leaders are faced with so many decisions each day. The best advice I received was to slow down as not all decisions need to be made immediately. By slowing down, we are able to be more intentional with our choices and better align our work to our goals. #leadlap
It also allows us to notice our emotions and how they may be impacting how we respond to situations. Mindfulness creates the space for us to pause, & support ourselves in order to have positive outcomes. @thezenteacher#leadlap
A2. Mission and focus is key to transformational leadership. Always grounding yourself in your mission will keep you aligned and mindful of the tasks at hand. Walk the talk! #LeadLAP
A1: As our lives become filled with technology, the distractions we face increase exponentially. Our ability to focus has diminished. Our need to think clearly to make complex decisions has not. More than ever, leaders need to train themselves to be fully present. #LeadLAP
A2: As leaders we can get caught up in the ‘urgent’ but unimportant -Remembering our purpose reminds us to spend our time on what really matters #LEADLAP
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership? #leadlap
A2: In any leadership role, Ss and staff watch how you react and approach things...especially during sensitive or trigger issues. Always lead positive and with good intent. #LeadLAP
A2. Working “intentionally” means that a level of thought & consideration went into that decision, that compliment, that interaction. It may not always be immediate but staff begins to see what you stand for as all decisions are intentional. #LeadLAP
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership? #leadlap
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership? #leadlap
@thezenteacher A1 Everyday matters between the school walls. As a leader it might be big or small moment for you personally depending on the situation. However, when you choose to lead a building you have to make all moments count for the staff and students. No days off! #LeadLAP
A1: Mindfulness allows us to be in the present moment without judgement. It allows us to notice what is front of us instead of holding ourselves to expectations from the past or future. By taking mindful moments like this, we have the ability reduce our levels of stress. #leadlap
A1: Mindfulness is the ability to observe their surroundings, others and self without judgement. By doing so, it enables you to lengthen the space between stimulus and response. As leaders, it’s important to take inventory of a situation from a variety of perspectives. #LeadLAP
Q2: Having a purpose in leadership and communicating that to our faculty, helps give them a vision for the why. This nurtures safety and trust. #leadlap
A2. Leaders have so much on our plates....being intentional means we are keeping the focus on people (relationships) and the school goals. This provides clarity for everyone and a purpose. We all need to know the purpose. #LeadLAP
I so need to do this! I've done some mindfulness/ meditation with my students, but I need to make it a routine. Also, need to be better about PAX Good Behavior Game routines. #leadLAP
In reply to
@mospillman, @thezenteacher, @GoNoodle
A2 Being intentional should be linked to purpose and measurable goals and outcomes. When we are intentional in our actions we prioritize around mission and outcomes. It creates trust, clarity, and confidence. #leadlap
Morning Monica! This is so true! I was just having this conversation with other coaches last week. It's a challenge as a new coach, but you learn so much along the way. #LeadLAP
A2) Being intentional about teaching is always about the planning process. This is my 2nd yr teaching and I really want to fall into routine bc it’s comfortable, but my kids this year are very diff from last year so I have to look at what will help this yrs classes. #LeadLAP
A2: Starting a meeting w/ THE purpose, in a manner that lets others know it is w/ intent & planning, actually goes a long way toward settling nerves/ anxieties or hostilities of those attending the meeting. Same for starting class. Let them see we know where we're going. #LeadLAP
A2 As leaders there are so many things that play "tug-of-war" for our attention. If we are not intentional to MAKE the time--"the time" will be sucked away like a high-powered vacuum. For me, it was impt to make time to be in classrooms& give appreciation to the Ts & Ss. #leadlap
A2: We can’t expect others to see us as leaders just because we have a fancy title. Intentional leaders communicate their missions, fervently guard the school’s culture, remember Ts work with us, not for us, act rather than react, and remain S centered always! #LeadLAP
A2: So many distractions out there. Those in our care count on us to stay grounded in our purpose and not lose sight of what is important & where we're headed. We have mountains to move... no easy task. Intentionality is calming & motivating. #LeadLAP
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership? #leadlap
A1: Being in the moment makes a better leader because you are focused on one thing, or person, at a time rather than being pulled in various directions. #LeadLAP
A1: Everyone can get lost in the day to day of schedules and tasks but in order to help those you serve you must take the time to be present in what is happening at the moment. This will allow you to better address the needs of your school. #LeadLAP
A3: My "go to" self-care activities are reading, writing, listening to music, hot coffee, breakfast in a diner, slippers, and hot, buttered popcorn. #LEADlap#pampertriggers
A2: Being intentional helps you focus and zero in. An example for me is as I’m dismissing my first & second graders in the morning, I try to get down on their level to see eye-to-eye as I greet them and wish them a good morning.
#LeadLAP
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership? #leadlap
A2: For me, being intentional is keeping the end in mind, what is our goal/what are we working toward? In leadership we are working to create a collective efficacy, and our intentionality helps support this. #LEADLAP
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership? #leadlap
A2: doing thing with purpose is just how it works. There is no ther way. We just have to make sure we recognize the purpose and is it correct thinking and behavior ❓
#LeadLAP
A1: I think of @thezenteacher description of "present moment awareness" in The Zen Teacher. and the Beginners Mind - practice of approaching a situation with an open mind, vulnerable hear, willingness to learn. The beginning of being a leader! #leadlap
Very few of the accidents in my life have produced good results. My teaching is better when it is thoughtful & prepared. My students are more successful when they come to class with a purpose for they are doing. #LeadLAP
A2: We have a thousand things to do. We have to be intentional to help us focus on what is important, and why it is a priority. In my experience, not being intentional = not going deep, not facilitating lasting change. #LeadLAP
A3: I have to have quiet time alone. Literally silence. I also take time to get outside on weekends even if it's just a road trip. I have to get out of the office intentionally. #LeadLAP
A2: Being intentional and doing things with a purpose allows us to analyze our impact and make changes as needed. Intentional relationship building allows for strong relationships to be built. #LeadLAP
A2: As a leader, each decision made influences more than just ourselves, it impacts the whole. So each decision must be made with thought & purpose. #LeadLAP
A3: My self-care is also my Plan BE; as long as I am where my feet are, I am better able to unwrap the present.
In this shot, we are kayaking as a family on Lake Friendswood. Bathing in nature and drinking in the benefits of blue spaces. #leadlap
A2: Being intentional is imperative especially when it comes to leadership! As a leader, you are modeling what is important in the work you are doing. Do all things on purpose and with a purpose. Time is too limited not to be intentional. #leadlap
A3. Take a moment to breathe, think deeply about all that is good and right. My best self care strategy is to thank someone else! Pay it forward #leadlap
A3: Essential oils daily, massages when I can, walking with friends in nature, reading & writing for reflection are my go-to sefl care strategies! #leadlap
A3- A massage.... nothing better than just 'relaxing' and letting someone else rub all that tension away! I could probably use on at least once a week- but I only spoil myself a few times per year. #LeadLAP
A2- you have to have a why and a plan to get there. It doesn’t mean your path can’t (or won’t) change, but if you’re intentional about your efforts, it builds your capacity as a team. Leading and moving forward together is so much more enjoyable! #BetterTogether#LeadLAP
A3: Self care for me is participating in #Leadupchat and #LeadLAP. Even though it requires I wake up early on Saturday morning instead of sleeping in, these chats provide the reflection space I need to refocus for the week ahead. #LeadLAP
A3 Reading, Reading and more Reading! It allows me to ‘go somewhere else’ and the stories usually leave me with something to think about. Very rewarding and enriching. When that fails I assemble a jigsaw puzzle! #leadlap
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership? #leadlap
I am loving the scent-sational calm that essential oils bring.
Just this week, I doused a cotton ball in Citrus Oil and put it into a salt shaker for the Ss to bring focus and calm to my Ss and to me! #leadlap
A3: I have to have quiet time alone. Literally silence. I also take time to get outside on weekends even if it's just a road trip. I have to get out of the office intentionally. #LeadLAP
A3: Right now I read but I realized a while ago that I had given up my hobbies in the business of life. Working on bringing photography and singing back into my life (not at the same time :) #leadLAP
A2: Doing things on purpose and with a purpose allows others to see that the leader is moving in a specific direction and this keeps the leader moving in that specific direction. Also. on purpose, with purpose must include communication. #LeadLAP
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership? #leadlap
A2: We shared a powerful moment this week in a teacher leader mtg. Team activity (thanks @alienearbud!) around this poem. Lots of emotional insights around our purpose and not losing sight of it. #ImNotCryingYouAre#purposedriven#LeadLAP
A2: Building on
@DanielPink
, if we lack purpose it can undermine our intrinsic motivation. Every leader should have a cause worth fighting for! #leadlap
A3: At school, it’s kids, find them, talk with them, spend time learning with them. At home, it’s time with my girls and running. Running helps clear my mind and allows me to plan/brainstorm my next “big” thing. #LEADLAP
A3) My "go to" self care activities are cooking and baking. I get to take risks, move outside my comfort zone, be creative, learn from my mistakes, and share the results (which often taste pretty good). #LeadLAP
A2: Being intentional is setting a principle-centred focus on the choices you make. We can find ourselves operating in reaction-mode, which rarely serves us or the people in our lives. Keeping our “why” at the forefront makes decisions easier to make.
#leadlap
A3: Yoga & mediation have helped me learn to be present in the moment. Though I practice regularly, I always pop into a class after work when I feel like I've struggled to be in the moment at work or at home. Having a focused space is key for me when I need a "reset". #leadlap
A3: My go-to self-care is quickly becoming a wal-og-un (sad mixture of walking, jogging, and running) while listening to music then taking a hot shower. I also love a random road trip with tunes! #LeadLAP
Beth from MD tuning in a little late. I am an Assistant Principal and also will be showing my JHU grad class this as an example of a live chat if this is still going at 11:00! #leadlap
A3. I just found this great urban sweat experience in RI thanks @wendyecotta. It was a great way to detox. Highly suggest it. I’m sure there are other locations that do something similar. Or I come to Miami Beach. #LeadLAP
A3. Yoga at least 5x a week. A good cup of black coffee, and a playlist of songs that center me. Time with my son (not HW time) is always a blast. Read, Read, Read but only after I’m centered. I can’t read angry. #LeadLAP
@thezenteacher A3 Anything that allows me to reflect. Time w/ family/friends, working out and watching my favorite teams. But I love PD, conferences and podcast. At this moment in life my career is part of my identity. Therefore, self care involves getting better. #LeadLAP
A3: Self care for me is participating in #Leadupchat and #LeadLAP. Even though it requires I wake up early on Saturday morning instead of sleeping in, these chats provide the reflection space I need to refocus for the week ahead. #LeadLAP
A4: To me, standards are what you want to have happen. Expectations are HOPING or DESIRING that they will, in fact, happen. And that just might lead to disappointment. #LEADlap
Q4: In Zen, it is said that suffering comes from thwarted expectations. What might be the difference between having expectations and having standards? #LEADlap
A3b: What self-care looks like right now. No sound from anywhere and I'm being used as a pet pillow by two furbabies who barely saw me at all the last 2 days. #LeadLAP
A3: Writing had always been my go-to “self-care” activity. Whether it is writing a journal entry, a poem, a memoir, a letter of apology or forgiveness, letting my pen dance on a paper (or my fingers tickle keys) for a while is the best therapy I have ever experienced. #LeadLAP
A2: Everyone loves a clear directive. If you as a leader can model exactly what you expect from others then it takes away some of the anxiety they may have in joining your movement. #LeadLAP
Q2: Being "intentional" means doing things on purpose and WITH a purpose. Why is this a good approach, especially when it comes to leadership? #leadlap

Self care is daily face to face interactions with students all around campus. Looking at their faces as they engage! Getting outside of the office is key! @thezenteacher#leadLAP
Q4: In Zen, it is said that suffering comes from thwarted expectations. What might be the difference between having expectations and having standards? #LEADlap
A3: This work isn’t for the faint of heart. I made the conscious decision to start living and stop existing. I can’t produce my best work if I am on autopilot. Hiking, massages, and the occasional glass of wine are my essentials. #LeadLAP
A2 If we want teachers to be intentional in their work with students, we have to model this in our work as leaders. Planning with the end in mind, always. #leadlap
A3: When I’m feeling overcome with stress or if I’m feeling nervous, I often take a moment to practice a three good things gratitude practice. It’s centring and reminds me that it’s all going to be ok! #LeadLAP
A4: To me, standards are what you want to have happen. Expectations are HOPING or DESIRING that they will, in fact, happen. And that just might lead to disappointment. #LEADlap
A3 My go to self-care activity is exercising 4 times each week. This year, I added one class of yoga each week. LOVE that for meditation & stretching. Gotta calm my creative mind.
I, also, enjoy writing. LOVE It. And, playing the piano. It's calming. #leadlap
A3: Self-Care can take on so many forms & should look different for everyone. I feel it’s important to listen to what your body is communicating to you about it’s needs and schedule time for it. I enjoy going to the gym, kayaking, & laughing with a good friend. #leadlap
Self care for me is a long run! Plus I gotta stay in shape to keep up with my kiddos on our xc team! Also sitting with friends and a cup of coffee ☕️ literally makes my day! #LeadLAP
A3: I enjoy cooking, reading educational books, and listening to music. My PLN also brings me stress relief, laughter (Best medicine!), and so much learning. My #oneword this year is *healthy* as I recognize it’s time to focus on myself (after raising 3 kiddos). #LeadLAP
A3-reflection & prayer, quiet drives to/from school, jamming out to music and exercise are my go-tos. Friends and family time are an absolute must. No is an okay word because without time for self, you can’t be your BEST self. #balance#LeadLAP
A4. A standard I believe is something I set for myself. Expectations are something u want from others. I’ve learned better to hold yourself to a higher standard then set high expectations #leadLAP
Q4: In Zen, it is said that suffering comes from thwarted expectations. What might be the difference between having expectations and having standards? #LEADlap
People do say that a lot! That's when they think "introvert" means "I don't like people" or "I'm scared in front of groups," neither of which is true for me! #leadlap
A2: Going “unscripted” can work at times but it often results in responding to moments and not prioritizing instead of planning for them. A degree of spontaneity and flexibility must accompany the intentional planning that we do. #LeadLAP
A3-I love to swim! Don't do it much, but it's peaceful. I like heat too, so saunas are relaxing.
Any exercise with my play list has potential to get me calmer. #LeadLAP
A3: I self-care by working out. Started in December and rarely miss a day, even if I can only fit in 15 min! I have appreciated the inspiration from @runnin26 and @mradamwelcome! I also set a goal and made time to read for myself and not just for work. #LeadLAP
A4- sometimes we set unreachable expectations for ourselves and then feel bad when we don't reach them... other than holding ourselves to standards that we can reach and see the progress that we make... #LeadLAP
A3: Running is my go-to (even though I'm currently out w a broken toe... how can something so small hurt so bad?!?!) along w a morning routine that includes meditation, scripture, gratefulness & general quiet time before the craziness of the day hits. #LeadLAP
I think as a leader, one skill we don’t often talk about is helping staff manage their expectations. We do damage by delaying bad news. So often, leaders delay communication of something negative in hopes it works out. 1/ #leadlap
A3) My "go to" self care activities are cooking and baking. I get to take risks, move outside my comfort zone, be creative, learn from my mistakes, and share the results (which often taste pretty good). #LeadLAP
Agreed. The highlights of my week! I had to block off time in my schedule and have my admin assistant consider that as "protected time." Sounds terrible but I couldn't get the time in if I didn't block it off. ;) #Leadlap
A3: Still working on self-care for me. It is dinner with friends and playing with my daughter. Hoping to start miracle mornings to have this intentional time daily. #leadlap
A4: Standards aren't negotiable. Expectations are simply what we want to happen. I can meet a standard even though my expectations fail miserably. #LeadLAP
A4: oh dang, #TheDanTricarico bringing HEAT with this one!!!!
Another example of word choice making all the difference in the world!!!!
Expectations: what you expect to happen & will help others get there
Standards: won’t accept anything less, period. #LeadLAP
A4: I truly believe that contentment in life is derived from the knowledge that you have done all that you can within your power to serve others, do your best, and be the fullest expression of yourself. That which is out of your control, can’t be changed. #LeadLAP
Q4: In Zen, it is said that suffering comes from thwarted expectations. What might be the difference between having expectations and having standards? #LEADlap
I have found giving staff the possibility of something happening that might Impact them but ends up not happening in the long run a better proposition than delaying bad news and having it pop up at the end, when staff don’t have time to adapt #leadLAP 2/2
A3: My go-to self-care is quickly becoming a wal-og-un (sad mixture of walking, jogging, and running) while listening to music then taking a hot shower. I also love a random road trip with tunes! #LeadLAP
A4. Perfectionism is the killer of growth. Lofty expectations sound great on paper but when they are not met, you feel like a failure. Too low & you haven’t accomplished anything. Standards of excellence are way more productive. #LeadLAP
Q4: In Zen, it is said that suffering comes from thwarted expectations. What might be the difference between having expectations and having standards? #LEADlap
A4- Wow... I feel like I saw this one the opposite of others... I tend to have really high expectations and then feel bad when I don't achieve them... but if I set standards for myself I can see the progress along the way... but not I'm rethinking... #LeadLAP
Thank you everyone for joining #LeadLAP today, and thank you to @thezenteacher for hosting. Remember to make a little time to take care of YOU this week.
A4: Ss over the years refuse to have any expectations for themselves because don't want to fail. Standards let them have something to strive for without the disappointment of not being good enough.
#leadlap
A1: Relationships are a huge part of building culture. For educational leaders to be agents of change, we need a team of people to make this happen. Culture needs to be the foundation of the work that we do. #LeadLAP
A2- There is no time to do without a purpose. One must think prior to doing, I'm still learning this part. I'm a huge fan of take action now, because too many over think or procrastinate.
I'm a getter done kind of leader! #LeadLAP
A1-4: As I read and reflect on all the fantastic answers shared, I'm noticing a huge trend...Self care is not standardized and we should never make it that way. Each person has his/her go to and as leaders, we should respect and honor the individuality. #LeadLAP
Intentional sensory stimulation is important! We learn about the world around us through out senses. Those lessons are enhanced with stimulation that causes joy and sometimes healing when it enters us through our eyes, ears, nose, hands, and tongue. #LeadLAP
A4) Standards to me are convictions - these are more rigid. Expectations are how we plan to get to the standards, but these often are adjusted based on whether or not we meet or fall short of them. #LeadLAP
A3: ohh self care. I’m bad at this on a regular basis. I try to go for short walks and leave work at school most nights- the tangible work anyway #LeadLAP
A4: Standards are what I set for myself, and my expectations are to exceed them. Another way to see it is standards are what others set for us and our own expectations are what get us into trouble. Like being upset for merely meeting the standard. #LeadLAP#Sanctuaries
A4. I follow the mantra “Be firm with your principles but flexible with your practices.” The “why” will not change but the “how” May change based upon the situation and many variables. #LeadLAP
A4: When I think standards, I think of CCSS, and when I think of Expectations, I think of Expected behavior vs. Unexpected behavior. Maybe I just need to focus on teaching students how to behave like with #PBIS#LeadLAP
A3- My biggest self-care task is eating right for some health conditions that have limited me before. Love these chats and Voxer groups for places to have important convos. (Sometimes exercise 😬) #LEADLAP
A4: I think this is a mindset difference. Sometimes you have to be really good at self-talk to keep your head out of "shoulding" yourself. Keeping reasonable expectations for yourself doesn't mean you have to lower your standards. #leadlap
Q4: In Zen, it is said that suffering comes from thwarted expectations. What might be the difference between having expectations and having standards? #LEADlap
That's all we have time for this morning, everyone. Thanks for being here. Go out today and try to find a few moments for YOU. Remember: Self-care IS Health Care! And we need you! #LeadLAP
A3b: What self-care looks like right now. No sound from anywhere and I'm being used as a pet pillow by two furbabies who barely saw me at all the last 2 days. #LeadLAP
A4. Great question and I'm not sure I have an exact answer right now. Surely something I'll be thinking about this upcoming week. Looking forward to reading other peoples answers. #leadlap
Friends, let's talk about poorly-understood research that has the potential to turbocharge reading outcomes:
Ss' background knowledge matters more to their reading comprehension than their reading skill. REALLY.
A favorite from my blog:
#satchathttps://t.co/Dud38tfmO1
A4: Standards are the level of quality that is accepted. Collectively, standards are your North star, and in great schools, it’s visible in every classroom. Expectations are built on our own biased premonitions, which makes them poor predictors of reality. #LeadLAP
Q4: In Zen, it is said that suffering comes from thwarted expectations. What might be the difference between having expectations and having standards? #LEADlap
A4: I think both are important - - expectations can stretch us, but they have to be realistic. If they aren’t realistic and we don’t meet them, that’s were the disappointment comes in. That’s why, for myself, I like the #oneword mentality vs. a New Year’s Resolution.
#LeadLAP
Q4: In Zen, it is said that suffering comes from thwarted expectations. What might be the difference between having expectations and having standards? #LEADlap
A4: Standards aren't negotiable. Expectations are simply what we want to happen. I can meet a standard even though my expectations fail miserably. #LeadLAP
A3-At school-Ss, co workers, coffee & chocolate. At home, reading, creating, and we just got a plot at a community garden--so now I can say gardening; ) It's crazy, but I like weeding the garden #leadlap
A2 I am intentional when greeting my students at the door and ask them How are you? in Spanish and hear their answers. So much fun! I use a fake mic! #LEADLAP
A4: oh dang, #TheDanTricarico bringing HEAT with this one!!!!
Another example of word choice making all the difference in the world!!!!
Expectations: what you expect to happen & will help others get there
Standards: won’t accept anything less, period. #LeadLAP
A4: Standards are what we seek to achieve and allow us to take ownership of our daily lives as we work towards fulfilling them. We might define expectations for what we desire for the future. #LeadLAP
That's all we have time for this morning, everyone. Thanks for being here. Go out today and try to find a few moments for YOU. Remember: Self-care IS Health Care! And we need you! #LeadLAP
A4: This really has me thinking, I’m seeing the difference as standards are the minimum or what we set for ourselves as we set out to do something,& expectations as the outcome we are looking for. We can’t guarantee expectations, but we can always have high standards. #LEADLAP
Q4: In Zen, it is said that suffering comes from thwarted expectations. What might be the difference between having expectations and having standards? #LEADlap
Thank you so much to @thezenteacher for leading us this morning! I appreciate how you help this pirate find more zen! Have a great week #LeadLAP crew!!
I think it’s all how u define standard. Standard for learning has specifics. Standards I set for myself can grow and change. Has multiple meanings. #Leadlap
A4: Standards are pre-established and accepted, even if they don’t make everyone happy. They are the target that must be hit. Expectations are our feelings about and reactions to outcomes and actions moving towards or beyond the standard. #LeadLAP
A4- Wow... I feel like I saw this one the opposite of others... I tend to have really high expectations and then feel bad when I don't achieve them... but if I set standards for myself I can see the progress along the way... but not I'm rethinking... #LeadLAP
A4. Maybe the difference between expectations and standards is that the standard is the lowest level of proficiency. The standard may be much higher in your role. Reach for the stars? 💫 #LeadLAP
@thezenteacher A2 intentions, words and actions say a lot about your leadership. Example.. data driven or data informed. At the end of the day. Be real, honest, value teamwork and communicate. Your abilities should be valued as a whole and not on a single decision. #Leadlap

True, Beth! You could say I was "intentional" in SANCTUARIES about helping people design their OWN plan b/c everyone's different & has different needs. #leadlap
A1-4: As I read and reflect on all the fantastic answers shared, I'm noticing a huge trend...Self care is not standardized and we should never make it that way. Each person has his/her go to and as leaders, we should respect and honor the individuality. #LeadLAP
A4: Standards are factual. Expectations are based on what we feel. Many times it can lead to disappointment & stress when we try to live in a world of expectations. Especially when our own expectations don’t match with others around us. #LEADLAP
Q4: In Zen, it is said that suffering comes from thwarted expectations. What might be the difference between having expectations and having standards? #LEADlap
Completely...my thoughts were more centered on adults. I've started seeing mandated yoga, etc in staff meetings. Mandating mindfulness seems to be counterproductive. We focus on SEL every day in advisory for Ss, which has been a game changer. #LeadLAP
Intentional sensory stimulation is important! We learn about the world around us through out senses. Those lessons are enhanced with stimulation that causes joy and sometimes healing when it enters us through our eyes, ears, nose, hands, and tongue. #LeadLAP
I do NOT want #LeadLAP to end already!

A4: Deep thought. Wrote something then erased it after thinking about current work scenarios. Be careful about the language. Is it really a standard or an expectation? What is the accountability? More complex than I initially thought. #leadlap

Expectations are where our emotions, opinions, biases, and background come into play while standards are the foundation upon which we base our practice. Mindfulness and reflection allow leaders to have realistic expectations.

Q4: In Zen, it is said that suffering comes from thwarted expectations. What might be the difference between having expectations and having standards? #LEADlap
A4 standard is the objective/goal set by school, district , state while the expectation is where the student is destined to reach because of their learning ability. #LEADLAP
Mindfulness practices that use your senses to explore the world around you is a fantastic way to increase self-awareness. One of the core competencies for #SEL#LEADLAP
A4:Having expectations is our attempt to control outer circumstances.Suffering comes from trying to control what is out of our control. Having standards sets up healthy internal boundaries. We have control of our standards and of our actions when others don’t meet them. #LeadLAP
A3: If I have time to plan it out then a long bike ride is my go to if there is no time then a good late night YouTube rabbit hole session is all I need! #LeadLAP
Thank you so much to @thezenteacher for leading us this morning! I appreciate how you help this pirate find more zen! Have a great week #LeadLAP crew!!
Completely agree! Self-care is so personal. Therefore we should not judge just others for when they need it or how they need it. And we should expose others to different kinds of self-care. #Leadlap

A3: Yoga & mediation have helped me learn to be present in the moment. Though I practice regularly, I always pop into a class after work when I feel like I've struggled to be in the moment at work or at home. Having a focused space is key for me when I need a "reset". #leadlap

I also think administrators need to also view things through the eyes of students as well. Try to see the whole picture of the school and the needs that may be present. #culture#Relentless#LeadLAP
I think great administrators try to view things through the eyes of teachers… and I think great teachers, try to view things through the eyes of students.
