Hi Kevin from Indy Pike HS.
Hi Kim Hendrick from Indianapolis Glad to be here!
Laura from CIESC. Looking forward to rdg about how people are utilizing OERs.
Teri Oliver from New Pal. I know what OER is, but not much else.
Daniel working as Instructional Technologist in South Bend area. Will mostly be lurking tonight from the conference in MI
Looks like a great group tonight. Question 1 coming right up!!
Q1: What is one question you’d like to discuss around and open-licensed educational resources in general?
With so many OERs out there how do you evaluate them?
R1) Are they likely to be long-lasting or die out quickly b/c they're free/open? Worry about using something that goes away.
R1: where are they and how do we know which ones are of value to us? So many out there!
Seems to be a common question. We will be sure to get to this one tonight! https://t.co/ElVdGe2Oem
R1: where are they and how do we know which ones are of value to us? So many out there!
R1: Where do you start and how do you convince teachers to move towards the OERs. How do you decide?
R1: Which OERs are best for various skills levels of Ss?
Hi ! Good to see you & your expertise chiming in!
R1: I may be the odd one here, but I like using my own resources and creating my own material. Never been a fan of scripts
A1: How to assist teachers to empower students to utilize resources effectively.
R1 How do you evaluate & move Ts and Admin toward this movement if reluctant?
Good point. Free and even open does not mean we can forget about copyright or appropriate attribution.
R1: To answer the common questions of time? and quality?
R1 How do you truly integrate OER for personalized student learning & not just tech integration?
I agree. How do you communicate the value? Good question! https://t.co/Z4iLQzLiju
R1 How do you evaluate & move Ts and Admin toward this movement if reluctant?
OER doesn't have to be "script" type resources. It can also be materials that you weave into your lesson
Great questions so far everyone. I swear, most weeks y’all don’t even need a moderator. ;-)
A1: How to gain support from stakeholders to move away from traditional textbooks?
With all these amazing questions, let’s get moving… Q2 up next.
Tech integration seems to be the surface! https://t.co/sUu06kx4LM
R1 How do you truly integrate OER for personalized student learning & not just tech integration?
Agreed!! Some parents don't understand the shift and want to see the textbooks & worksheets...sadly.
Q2: How can openly licensed educational materials transform teaching and learning? Why go there?
This seems like a good question to get us going. With so many questions about getting buy-in… let’s think about the WHY.
R2) Flexibility - not tied to text that doesn't get updated, can use on multiple devices, access at home or school.
Isn't this the truth! https://t.co/XnyuuETkDl
A1: How to gain support from stakeholders to move away from traditional textbooks?
This is how they remember education
R1: It's more about the mindshift OER promotes- let's create what doesn't exist
R2 can truly help personalize lrng for Ss & make more relevant.
R2 Gives Ts the ability to customize the learning for Ss and find or develop relevant content.
R2: they are more up to date that traditional resources & create different/real learning experiences
Would you or anyone like to discuss this further? How does it help personalization? https://t.co/c9xNJhTky0
R2 can truly help personalize lrng for Ss & make more relevant.
Information is constantly changing, shouldn't our resources
R2: It allows educators to dig deeper and give students the ability to apply their knowledge!
R2: OER'S keep us current & relevant, that is so important for creating authentic learning experiences!
R2: It's not a select few who have things to contribute to a shared body of knowledge, which itself is ever-changing.
R2: Shrinking budgets and truly having the ability to adapt them to meet the needs of your class. So many times we forget that!
R2: OERs give Ss the ability to go to multiple sources to gain information.
A2. T have long been equipping S with skills, but T had to spend time/energy delivering resources. OER and other digital resources
That is my biggest question about OER. How can I help support teachers to make it efficient & easy for them to find?
Ts can find various OERs & integrate into an LMS then create various pathways for personalized lrng or have S create own.
and answering this question will increase buy-in 1000%
A2 empower S to access resources from many sources and S and T can focus on skills to use and evaluate resources.
Q3 What challenges come with and moving to open educational resources (OER)?
Districts have to be committed financially to support the collaboration that is needed!
1st great hashtag. 2nd different mediums and levels, and better yet when Ss selected
A1. I think the answer is equipping S with skills to evaluate resources. Skills they will need for lifetime.
R3) How comfortable are Ts w/ using & integrating it? Also, how flexible is it? Is it stand alone or can other sources be used?
and also assisting Ts in this effort!
R3 I saw several identified in the responses to Q1-buy-in w/ALL stakeholders was prominent
R3: Support, communication, and collaboration!
- . has seen is SEAs & LEAs not sharing their work. Collaboration can help minimize duplication of efforts.
R3 Making sure to vet the content and keep updating the resources.
R3: My own thoughts here: let’s be real, it takes more work. A textbook is easy and right in front of you. Curation is a SKILL.
R3: Biggest challenge is teaching Ts to find & curate these resources, and to understand WHY it is such a critical teaching skill
A3. Given vast amount of resources and newly created, T will have to collaborate/ connect so no one is doing alone and connect S
R3: Finding the highest quality and integrating them with teachers! Collaborate with others to spread the good news of
R3 PD PD PD for Ts & SUPPORT
R3: If educators feel supported, they will continue to build a culture of problem solving and innovation.
So true, ! Removing the middle man of publishing company editing team
R3: Hello? Can you say, "trained librarian?"
Yep! Learning new skills take time & repetition. Practice makes permanent!
A3 Teachers also don't have to curate all resources. T need to curate model resources to demonstrate credible resources for S.
Yes. If only all schools had them. Sigh. :(
Definitely why our team is working with teachers across the state to curate and share. Divide and conquer! https://t.co/LDbfepoE3A
- . has seen is SEAs & LEAs not sharing their work. Collaboration can help minimize duplication of efforts.
A3: Giving teachers time to collaborate and support in finding resources
Q4 What is your school’s/district’s strategy for the implementation of openly-licensed educational materials?
This is me standing on a stool echoing No teacher on their own-collaboration is critical! https://t.co/dtopMSuTGW
A3. Given vast amount of resources and newly created, T will have to collaborate/ connect so no one is doing alone and connect S
R4) Honestly, I'm not sure. Think for but not much guidance.
R3: As Ts learn to curate, it's important to model and to promote curation by students! This is a critical skill they need also!
R4: Baby steps. We are in the learning phase.
R4: Building shared resource courses in our LMS
R4 I'm really interested in this. If you don't know; no shame. Now you have a great dialogue to open :)
Great idea! We are hoping to do something similar. Calling them collaboration courses. https://t.co/YwQJFjdPwe
R4: Building shared resource courses in our LMS
what systems do you use to organize OER. How can districts take away the time excuse?
R4: We are creating a scope and sequence to align with our standards. This will give our school a solid foundation!
Absolutely! Curating great resources in a central & easy to find LMS location is a great way to model that skill!
Part of me thinks we can never take away the time excuse. We all know every one of them is overworked/underpaid
Whatever system you want is my rule, . Best way to take away the time excuse-analyze it. What's the real issue?
R4 I think looking to other districts that are effectively using the wold be valuable
A4: Curating credible sources important skill for T & S. Build communities of learners skilled using reliable resources. Connect
But to that point, I think we make time for what we value. We have to help show the benefit. Sounds cliche but true
agreed. Concrete examples- not always in the abstract
is currently working w Amazon Inspire so IN T's can share in same place w quality examples already created https://t.co/cKoO5hx6Ym
what systems do you use to organize OER. How can districts take away the time excuse?
Heard about this at today. Never heard of Amazon Inspire. Excited to see what you all have planned.
A4. Partner w/ other schools & state. So many of us agree on needs & solutions. Tech can connect us easily, so we can together.
Absolutely! Having a scope & sequence, Staying organized, and communicating a plan is key!
Let’s get into some of the questions you all posed for Q1… Can’t answer all, but let’s take a look at some of them.
I'm so interested to learn more about this!
Q5: With so many OERs out there how do you evaluate them?
I think this is critical to plan ahead & do backwards design & include DOK w/ competencies.
Need to dash friends. If you want to know more/help w dig content curation please reach out!!
So how are folks communicating this shift to parents? Has anyone "opened" the discussion?
I couldn't wait, I tossed one out...
R5) That's the $64,000 question for me. How to plan, teach, grade, attend meetings, etc. AND evaluate OERs?
By doing this, it is showing how traditional textbooks do not go deep enough.
Options are always good. ;-)
as a side note, at times I feel a learning opportunity is lost when we rely only on subscription databases
R5: We have our building technology leaders review them first. UDL rubrics as well.
Next school year will be providing classes for our parents and stakeholders to attend!
I interpreted it as what characteristics do we look for in quality OER, but you are right about your interpretation too!
We've communicated in community night, website, newsletters and through teachers & guidance department. We still need more though
So up against UDL principles… I’ll add accessibility is important from my vantage point. What else do we look for?
R5 You will want to look at accessibility
R5 We utilize the iNACOL standards for quality Blended & Online design to evaluate the worthiness of specific OER's
R5 Deliverability-is it open in terms of platform? Is it interactive?
Yes! Does it give Ss an opportunity to interact with the content, teacher, or other students? https://t.co/KXNJgd8cvm
R5 We utilize the iNACOL standards for quality Blended & Online design to evaluate the worthiness of specific OER's
That's covering a lot . Have any dialogues been opened?
Q6: Where can educators find open educational resources (OER)?
Also, does it provide a rich variety of mediums for S to learn from and interact with?
I remember that feeling which is why it's so important that you don't have to do it all on your own!
R6) Know of a few but would love to learn more.
Parents have competing concerns. They want students prepared but anxious about grades and clear expectations.
I can't stress enough how our CoPs can be part of the "time" solution. Go into your Community and talk to your colleagues!
I have to go everybody! Thanks for the chat!!!!
Can be helpful but sometimes almost too broad (that I've seen so far - maybe I haven't looked closely enough).
This is part of larger conversation about how we all learn and build understanding, use resources and measure competency
they are what we make them! I'd love to work with you to form some effective discussion openers
Thank you for the OER resources and discussion. Very useful! Hoppe everyone has a great week.
