Good morning and welcome to #LeadUpChat! We are thrilled you are here as we wrap up our summer series today with @ShakeUpLearning! Please share your name and where you are from.
#LeadUpChat as we gear up today check out Kasey's Book "Shake Up Learning."
Technology is not a magic solution for education. It is an opportunity! An opportunity to shake things up, to connect & grow, & to create dynamic learning experiences for our students! @ShakeUpLearning
Hey hey hey! Kristy Smith from North Texas! On our way to Oklahoma for my grandpa’s 90th birthday but I couldn’t miss @ShakeUpLearning this morning! #Leadupchat
Hey y’all! I’m pouring a fresh cup of coffee and ready to learn with all of you this morning. Thank you for being an incredible part of my professional development. I’m Latoya, a state level ed leader in South Carolina! #LeadUpChat
This morning we are chatting about what I call, "Dynamic Learning." Below is my definition. It's nothing new, but a new way to bring things together into a meaningful and practical framework.
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A1: I have seen countless schools try to use tech as a solution to their problems. Technology is NOT a magic solution, but it is an opportunity to do things differently and #ShakeUpLearning!
#LeadUpChat
The students start @OakHarborPS September 6th. Next week will be spent training and preparing to teach 2nd grade and be a building tech coach. #LeadUpChat
A1 Technology has provided my students with opportunities to connect, collaborate, and learn from students from all around the world! The world becomes a little smaller and kinder when kids learn from kids. #leadupchat
A1: We are no longer limited within our four walls of the classroom. Our kids are able to collaborate with kids around the world as well as travel around the world without ever leaving our school. Technology has challenged me to be more innovative #LeadUpChat
A1 It is so easy to help students follow many different paths to the same destination. So many ways to make connections and be creative and share our thinking. #leadupchat
A1 Technology has enhanced traditional learning. The problem many face is taking new tech and trying to find a way to use it instead of take what you need to teach and finding tech to deliver in an enhanced way! #LeadUpChat
A1: Tech has helped me utilize social media to involve families. We use Twitter to communicate with our Ss and families. As well, we utilize email and so on. So many changes compared to what it used to be! #LeadUpChat
A1: Tech can enhance already good teaching practices => it leverages student engagement, autonomy, collaboration, interconnectedness, empowerment and relevance! #LeadUpChat
A1: Personally, my learning is exponential now that I am networked through tools like Twitter and Voxer. I have developed friendships with so many, and learn from those people every day. #leadupchat
A1: Using technology allows for multiple means of accessing learning, collaboration both inside and outside of the classroom walls, as well as varied ways for expression of the learning. #leadupchat
A1: It allows me to organize better, develop prior knowledge more easily, engage hesitant students faster, make instruction fun and memorable, connect with amazing educators who grow my practice, AND MOST IMPORTANT...shift student learning to creation vs consumption! #leadupchat
A1: I’m approaching technology differently this year and my Ss are doing great and learning so much more! We are researching topics, creating presentations, making tables and avatars, learning how to find shapes and pictures, etc. #leadupchat
A1: Technology provides opportunity for equity of voice & choice. Many students are willing to communicate through technology which is a door to their passions and needs. #leadupchat
A1: Technology helps me to create and assign engaging independent work like https://t.co/Hc1EQVrIrQ This frees me up to work with small groups and individuals. Technology also gives me lots of data! Yum! #LeadUpChat
Wow! First week as a new principal! Congrats! Thanks for ending the week by joining #LeadUpChat. Our goal is to help you be better for kids and staff each week. Can't wait to learn with ya.
A1: As an IC, I utilize Google Drive daily. It helps keep files organized and makes collaborating easy. Not to mention, all the trees that get to remain trees bc all copies are digital! #LeadUpChat
A1 It is a multiplier! Allows me to spend more time with the students and topics that need the time while not putting others on hold. Opens the doors for choice and breadth #leadupchat
A1: Technology has pushed me out of my comfort zone & driven me to try new things.I'm amazed at how much my staff, myself & my district have grown in this area in the last 5 years. We are using technology to enhance our teaching & overall performance!
#LeadUpChat
A1 Whether it is S learning or professional learning, tech has allowed us to diversify and expand our time, space, and place for learning. Tech allows us to make the transition where all team members can participate in asynchronous learning to support growth #leadupchat
A1: As a lead learner in an elementary school, I see how tech tools and devices enhance learning and give students an outlet for their voices and passions to come out. It provides multiple ways for kids to demonstrate knowledge, create, and design. #leadupchat
A1: Technology allows for a beautiful level of collaboration that helps students grow together both in the classroom and far beyond; it promotes a learning synergy #leadupchat
A1: Google’s search algorithms and the massive amount of information online has created conditions which allow true student centered learning! #leadupchat
A1: I feel that technology is the driving force of the educational revolution that has shown so many educators and Ss that school is just a building- learning happens everywhere. #LeadUpChat
A2: The limits of the four walls of our classroom have been broken down! We can communicate beyond school hours very quickly. Ss can find all the information their curious minds seek. I can seek and share ideas effectively! #leadupchat
Technology has helped our team interrupt the often negative stories told about education and has provided a platform for teachers to tell our own stories and about student successes #leadupchat
As a P in a small school it has expanded my PLN and helped me to grow as a leader. For our school it has been huge for communication and telling our story. #leadupchat
A1: Tech has flattened the walls and can #shrinktheglobe => Google lit trips, google maps, VR, can all provide Ss with experiences they may not have previously had=> opportunities to make what they are learning real! #LeadUpChat
A1: Technology allows access to the school community and Ts beyond the traditional school days. Twitter, Remind, YouTube, Schoology etc. gives Ss and Ps resources from home. #LeadUpChat
A1- for me, Twitter, Voxer, and the connections I have made (and continue to make) have expanded my mind and keep making me better. For Ss, the extension of learning beyond the classroom - helps develop a mindset that you can learn anywhere! #leadupchat
A1: Tech has allowed me to work 1:1 with many Ss at one time. I often flip my classroom using @edpuzzle - recording an interactive lesson that Ss experience on devices. It allows me to work with students in my “tutoring” small group at the same time! #Leadupchat
A1: We know there are SO many great things happening in schools. Technology has helped our team interrupt the often negative stories told about education and has provided a platform for teachers to tell our own stories and about student successes #leadupchat
@globalearner calls it the $1,000 pencil and is definitely so frustrating to see funds misappropriated. We need to focus as much on the #pd as we do on the shiny objects... #leadupchat
In reply to
@sandeeteach, @ShakeUpLearning, @globalearner
A1: Technology has added an additional layer to classroom learning! #leadupchat It provides interactive tools that our students enjoy and can assist teachers in so many ways!
A1. Technology has broken the limits of collaboration, time, and connection. Access and equity have been improved, although not fully, with the help of technology. #LeadUpChat
A1-Technology allows me to throw my phone across the room when trying to lead a chat on #ShakeUpLearning and @ATT has other ideas at that moment! 😝 #LeadUpChat
Another benefit is making T's rethink how they do things. Example, no paper agendas purchased this year. Great savings! T's don't know what to do. Idea: teach S's how to use Google Calendar and Google Keep instead! #gttribe#LeadUpChat
So true! Connecting with other educators through Twitter, etc has allowed for amazing collaboration between people who may never have been able to otherwise see inside of those classroom walls! #leadupchat
A1: Our level of family and community engagement @CentralCabotpK4 has increased because of using tools like Remind, Smore, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook Pages, and YouTube to share our school's story and celebrate success. #leadupchat#CEunited
A1: Personally, my learning is exponential now that I am networked through tools like Twitter and Voxer. I have developed friendships with so many, and learn from those people every day. #leadupchat
A1: Global connectivity has broadened my professional learning capacity and it has made it possible to bring the world into my classroom. 😊 #LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
Agree, Matt. The flat walls concept has not only allowed our Ss to connect with others around the world but is a resource they can use to increase their own leadership capacity to support the learning of their peers @MattPorricelli#leadupchat
Tech has empowered me to personalize my own professional learning in a profound & powerful way! B/c of Twitter & my PLN I learn about what I need, when I need it & have connected with incredible educators who have become both colleagues & friends! #LeadUpChat
Q2: How does the learning grow and evolve in your classroom, beyond one-and-done activities? How do you connect one activity to the next?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
Yes!!! Tech can be a great enhancer of student voice! The Opportunities to hear from EVERY student in 2018 are far greater than even only a few years ago! #LeadUpChat
It has allowed me to connect w/people outside my immediate circle. Ss also have more opportunities to see the world outside their immediate location. #leadupchat
A1: Our level of family and community engagement @CentralCabotpK4 has increased because of using tools like Remind, Smore, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook Pages, and YouTube to share our school's story and celebrate success. #leadupchat#CEunited
A1 I've never been more energized as a teacher than before because of the positive educators I've met on Twitter and in real life by attending #cuebold#cuerockstar conferences The sharing is amazing! #LeadUpChat
A1: Technology has narrowed the distance between us. It enables us to move outside our building and connect with so many great people and their ideas #LeadUpChat
A2: One advantage to today's tech, is that we have the ability to move BEYOND one-and-done assignments, we can digitally assess and allow student's to continue to work and grow in new ways.
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A1: Tech has made my teaching and learning 4-D. I can now share with my colleagues, teachers, and students the sights and sounds of our classrooms. #leadupchat
It has also allowed us to TELL OUR STORIES. Without technology we would still be at the mercy of other people’s narratives about education! #leadupchat
A1. Personally and professionally, technology has given me the opportunityto drive my learning, I own what I know, the depths of my knowledge, and more. I’m not simply restricted to what PD is offered to me. I can learn anytime and anywhere from anyone! #LeadUpChat
A1: Technology has connected my students to a world outside our classroom and school. It connects us to being able to create and communicate. #leadupchat
Yes! I will be using @ClassDojo to involve families. I love that I can post photos on the Class Stories and I may even have students create portfolios there. #LeadUpChat
In reply to
@saschnit, @ShakeUpLearning, @ClassDojo
A2 That's the million dollar question. We need to be intentional about connecting one activity to the next within and among classrooms. It's not easy, but we can do it! Collaborate and share! #LeadUpChat
Q2: How does the learning grow and evolve in your classroom, beyond one-and-done activities? How do you connect one activity to the next?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
READ today.
Your mind & your soul continuously need FUEL (just like a vehicle or a fire).
Not all FUEL is equal or serves the same purpose. Be thoughtful about your intake, its purpose, & its outcome.
#read#Wisdom#oklaed#leadupchat
A2 We are always on a continuum of learning and trying to get better at what we do. Setting goals, making a plan, reflecting and correcting our course if necessary. We build on our strengths and and strengths of others. #leadupchat
A2: Technology offers personalized distributive practice and intrinsic motivation. AI, 3D & Tech tools open a global connection to creativity, inspiration and knowledge! Breakthroughs for students of autism! #LeadUpChat
A1: In general, technology makes any assignment more fun for the kids. Engagement is everything. This is the world they live in now. We’ve got to play their game to win them! #LeadUpChat
A1: Tech has made my teaching and learning 4-D. I can now share with my colleagues, teachers, and students the sights and sounds of our classrooms. #leadupchat
A2: Increasingly Ss question the reasons “why” they are learning. No longer good enough to just complete an assignment and move on. Ss need to engage with learning by connecting to something they have or can experience. #LeadUpChat
A2 As students learn multiple ways to demonstrate their learning, it provides them with more choices as the year progresses. Their creativity expands and their voice is amplified! #LeadUpChat
@SmorePages is a way to share information electronically in the format of a newsletter/flyer. It is super easy, and the subscription for a year is very reasonable. I use it every week for families, and also to communicate weekly information to the staff. #leadupchat
In reply to
@Leah_Wireman, @CentralCabotpK4, @SmorePages
A2: When students’ passions, interests and curiosities help to lead the learning, inquiry-based learning can take us across many days of continuous investigation and deep learning. #LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
Q2: How does the learning grow and evolve in your classroom, beyond one-and-done activities? How do you connect one activity to the next?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A1: When I’m trying to design PD that I want to have the “WOW” factor I usually look to technology tools, educational apps, or the ultimate combination of both! #LeadUpChat
A2: We do PBL so we have a driving question that our lessons are focused on for a week or two. Ss learn that immediacy isn’t necessary and it’s okay to wait. #leadupchat
A1 By recognizing might simply be the best strategy (for me) to reflect on my teaching strategies, I think it promotes me constantly trying to improve the way I teach and the overall me as a growing, effective educator. #LeadUpChat
A2 Connecting the curriculum in a stream rather than by chapter using different activities including video, audio, graphics, AI, VR changes the interaction of the students diversity of instruction keeps us all fresh #leadupchat
A2 Learning grows and evolves by making the transition from isolated, learned and forgotten material to applicable, relevant learning that our Ss can use daily. Ts facilitate lessons based on themes that Ss revisit throughout the year #leadupchat
Q2: How does the learning grow and evolve in your classroom, beyond one-and-done activities? How do you connect one activity to the next?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A2: writing plays a huge part in our Social Studies class. We do a paragraph of the week focusing on answering essential questions. The writing process never stops bc we will gather all our writing for that unit to make a well-written paper. It’s an on going process #LeadUpChat
A2: An oldie, but a goodie- connecting lessons via backward planning. Key: making sure tech use is intentional and a part of the plan- not something “fun” to do! Connecting via tech in HS should mirror the modern workplace use of tech to be authentic and continuous! #LeadUpChat
I agree with you, Connie! We need to help more teachers experience the power of a PLN like how we might help students try a new tool. Model it, try it out together, and embed positive opportunities to tweet! We have a school hashtag as well #MADaboutDeeperLearning. #LeadUpChat
A1: Technology has helped me to bridge the gap of communication between parents, students & stakeholders. Tech has motivated me to push my thinking & inspired me to rethink my own perception of learning & teaching. #leadupchat
A2: Timely and actionable feedback is more accessible with tech! Ss no longer have to wait and forget about what they were working on => learning is a continuous and connected cycle=> with feedback it becomes meaningful accross assignments and topics! #LeadUpChat
We can lead by example and be models. Secondly, when people ask me...how do you know? I talk more explicitly about how much Twitter and other technology platforms have supported my professional growth and learning. We have to tell them. #Leadupchat
A2 when we are building intentional coherent instruction we use the technology that makes sense for each of the different elements. They aren’t in conflict with each other but build on the previous helping with the sense making #leadupchat
A2: hmm..this ? has stumped me. What does come to mind is what SeeSaw and other likeminded digital resources are doing - allowing Ss to archive their work and look at their growth in writing, math, reading, etc. #verticalalignment#LeadUpChat
I like this! We have to change our vocabulary and stop referring things as digital versions of the paper stuff or we will never see the full possibilities! #LeadUpChat
A2: Integration of the content makes sense to kids (and us!), because it becomes relevant. Linking what is being learned to a career is something we are focusing on @CentralCabotpK4 so kids can begin to see that they have so many options as a learner and future adult. #leadupchat
A2: Nothing better when Ss take a theme discussed from a read aloud two months ago and make connections to current day social issues and the historical topics they are studying! #LeadUpChat
This is key. For many people, tech is still something "magical" that happens from time to time in the classroom. It has to become a functional part before we can really leverage the full power of the tool. #leadupchat
A2 We look at our objectives and build upon the basics. Each activity should support the previous and lead to the future activity...and when done correctly all lead to REAL WORLD application! #LeadUpChat
Can be tricky for sure, but if you start with the standards and ask how can I provide voice and choice for Ss to demonstrate mastery of the standard, great things will happen. Not a magic bullet, but can be a game-changer. #leadupchat
I feel like some our job as Ts is similar to writers on a TV show. We need to “storyboard” the season to connect the dots with a payoff in the end. Maybe we need to have winter break start with a cliffhanger? #leadupchat
A2-Start with what your purpose is for the lesson. From there look for ways that you can connect it to the real world. Then ask open-ended questions to encourage learning beyond the lesson. #LeadUpChat
This semester I am trying to infuse more ungraded activities that (I hope) provide Ss the freedom to reflect on their learning, communicate their understandings, and explore further. #leadupchat
We can lead by example and be models. Secondly, when people ask me...how do you know? I talk more explicitly about how much Twitter and other technology platforms have supported my professional growth and learning. We have to tell them. #Leadupchat
A2: Working on essential questions and understandings this year. These allow the sts to recognize connections before I even start teaching. Then, we prove them right or wrong and grow or modify our schema. #LeadUpChat
Can’t the stuff that’s mandated be woven into our inquiry learning? This is only one approach to teaching and learning. You can’t do everything one way. Much depends on how you view and respond to “stuff that’s mandated”. #LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
@ShakeUpLearning Sometimes I worry that we’ve been conditioned in education to not be leaders of our own learning, to wait for the PD offered to us, instead of seeking out our own. I see this shifting in recent years though, but there are still some who fit this. #Leadupchat
Key thoughts, Sandy. Tech use allows our Ss to tap into multiple learning modalities and increases skill retention. Ss take ownership of what they have learned & are able to support peers as they learn, also @sandeeteach#peerlearning#leadupchat
a2: Coming up with real-life applications for students! Introducing them to new applications and technology! Making them take the next step and allowing them to be creative in their expression of their learning. Teaching their future self! #leadupchat#futureready#allin4nb
A2: I love that kids at my school have Google accounts and can use them at home. Google classroom is a great way to help kids stay organized and keep learning on track! Google Docs allow teachers and kids (or kids and peers) to collaborate and leave feedback. #leadupchat
A2: Often "one-&-done activities" with no connection to other learning, student experiences, or community involvement...will result in "one-&-done learning." It will be easily discarded by students as just another assignment they don't know WHY they're doing it #LeadUpChat
Q2: How does the learning grow and evolve in your classroom, beyond one-and-done activities? How do you connect one activity to the next?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A2) learning is neither an event or linear. We have to be comfortable with understanding it is a cycle and grounding it in other areas of learning. The transference of ideas across content areas and real world connections is key. #LeadUpChat
A2: Involve your S's in the process of unpacking standards, visualizing the pacing guide and learning targets, tracking their own progress, let them chose how they demonstrate what they know, include reflection & self assessment. #ownership#LeadUpChat
Q2: How does the learning grow and evolve in your classroom, beyond one-and-done activities? How do you connect one activity to the next?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A2: Connecting learning takes planning & experience, but it demonstrates true pay-off in the end. As an adminstrator, I strive to model what Ts can implement with Ss. I use #FlipgridFever, Google Forms, Google Classroom & more, so Ts can implement. Be intentional! #LeadUpChat
Connecting learning and lessons. Continually adding to a menu of tech tools and driving students to make decisions on selecting best tools for the task and referring to the strengths and weaknesses of past tasks! #LeadUpChat
ahh, now I see...to distance ourselves from one-and-done assignments, we need to make learning relevant, real-world based, and allow the space to apply what is learned in different ways. #LeadUpChat
A2: Use #PBL Strategies and Deeper Learning Approaches. Go beyond Scpe and Sequence to ask the Essential Questions and WIGS (Wildly Important Goals) #leadupchat
That is everything. A culture of dissent and critical feedback and showing you are open to being pushed back because it makes you a more resilient leader, will impact Ts and Ss in amazing ways! #leadupchat
A2 The key is to develop skills that transcend the curriculum and you teach content within that activity- the skills transcend and develop into future activities by using relevant topics such as PBL or Design Thinking. #leadupchat
A2: writing plays a huge part in our Social Studies class. We do a paragraph of the week focusing on answering essential questions. The writing process never stops bc we will gather all our writing for that unit to make a well-written paper. It’s an on going process #LeadUpChat
A2: Tech gurus like @AliceKeeler have convinced me to #DitchHW. This actually leads to lifelong learning rather than one-and-done lessons. I encourage families to read and play games instead- have kids keep score. #LeadUpChat
#leadupchat A2- you make connections to learning by allowing Ss to make connections and taping into their passions! The endpoint doesn’t always come at the end of a quarter or semester but rather when the Ss is done investigating the topic
A2: What do we want the students to know, be able to do, and equally important, "How do we want them to BE"? Help students have ownership and see how they're thinking will be used outside the classroom walls #leadupchat
A2: Discussions evolve into inquiry. From there, we can flow through the design thinking process. It takes more thinking to align with standards, but SO worth the effort to create authentic learning! Google Classroom helps me track progress and guide from the side. #leadupchat
Q2: How does the learning grow and evolve in your classroom, beyond one-and-done activities? How do you connect one activity to the next?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
It starts with the level of expectations in the culture of a school. Is it a non-negotiable that we everyone is transparent, everyone is a learner, and everyone needs to improve? #leadupchat
A2: Hard to maintain continuity of learning for long-term projects as a specialist. What if one class posted progress updates, plans, ideas @Flipgrid for the next class to continue/redirect, & also #Flipgrid-reflect themselves? #FlipgridFever#leadupchat#shakeuplearning#ddestem
Q2: How does the learning grow and evolve in your classroom, beyond one-and-done activities? How do you connect one activity to the next?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
Yes...part of it is being willing to take the risk and do the hard work that may take us away from more ‘traditional’ approaches to teaching and learning...but balance is key. Sometimes it just can’t be about student-driven inquiry. #LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
So important for teachers and students to think this way! BEYOND just want we HAVE to do, but doing what's best to prepare students for the future. #LeadUpChat
Thx @sandeeteach for mentioning student choice! I struggle w/this & it’s a personal goal for the school year. Mindset change- how can students demonstrate the same skill using different platforms and modes of expression? That ? is at the forefront of my planning! #Leadupchat
A2 As students learn multiple ways to demonstrate their learning, it provides them with more choices as the year progresses. Their creativity expands and their voice is amplified! #LeadUpChat
a2 In mathematics, there is no substitute for well-aligned curriculum. I have huge concerns about teacher-made curriculum. While it may be great short-term, gaps are formed. #leadupchat
A2. In my role, my classroom is the entire state. One of the things I try to do is be explicit about how our work connects to other critical elements of teaching and learning. Too often we assume people see connections when really they need us to help them see them. #Leadupchat
I’m wondering if there are PD opportunities in studying how tv shows map out of a season. Learning from how they lay it out may help us as Ts lay out our classes. #leadupchat does anyone know any writers for TV shows?
@ShakeUpLearning and it’s our job to start professional hunger! Lead the way through personalize learning tools. Do a Twitter chat as staff meeting, rally folks around a micro-credential that is a fresh take on a district or school initiative! #leadupchat
@ShakeUpLearning Sometimes I worry that we’ve been conditioned in education to not be leaders of our own learning, to wait for the PD offered to us, instead of seeking out our own. I see this shifting in recent years though, but there are still some who fit this. #Leadupchat
A2 I think we’re in the process of making that happen. I see more actual applying of knowledge opportunities being created by teachers and more service projects being initiated .#leadupchat
A3: The moment students get a comment, a shift has happened. My students suddenly cared much more about the quality of their work when they knew someone besides me was going to read it.
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
100% agree! Technology has reopened the doors to the schoolhouse and allowed us to combat the constant and fake message that schools are failing. I’m committed to proving they aren’t and provide proof with stories of our rock ⭐️ kids/teachers! #LeadUpChat
A1: We know there are SO many great things happening in schools. Technology has helped our team interrupt the often negative stories told about education and has provided a platform for teachers to tell our own stories and about student successes #leadupchat
A2: we had an amazing week, kicking off our PLCs - focusing on the WHY of our teams. Our goals and our WHY drive what we do - collaboration, reflection, analysis, and problem solving helps us improve our practice, which only helps our Ss! #LeadUpChat
A2: As a sec reading teacher I would plan units based on a piece of literature. Usually a short story, article, or excerpt from a novel. The themes and literary components would lead to a 2-3 week #leadupchat unit. Loved using tech such as video or back channel chat to enhance!
Yes. This is why there is no substitute for a well aligned curriculum in a math classroom. We teachers assume to much. It takes a village of writers to do this well. #leadupchat
A3: Use @padlet as a learning management system for both myself and parents. Sent home using a QR code and daily view and reflect on our learning #LeadUpChat
Just a few ways to deepen learning opportunities for kids that are continuous...
Writing across the curriculum
Assessment variety - student driven
Quality questioning
Place based learning
Cross curricular connections
Student Internships
Passion Projects
#LeadUpChat
Q3 There is such a vast audience waiting for out students out there and many ways to reach it. Many tools and paths are free and easy to use for all levels of students. https://t.co/BTqJZlIUla (work in progress) #leadupchat
I recognized recently that my insatiable intellectual curiosity is a turn off for some people. While it is a critical part of who I am, I never want it to come across in an arrogant or self serving manner. I truly love learning, reading,& writing. Those are my hobbies #Leadupchat
A1. I turned my entire syllabus into a welcome back game thx to @padlet@Flipgrid@RemindHQ. Now it’s a team challenge through 10 stations w/ action-oriented work products at each. Instant engagement. More face to face time! Please steal it 😎 https://t.co/NvuvBCNiqk#LeadUpChat
A3 Some of our staff do, but not all. And staff and I "publish" staff and student learning on Instagram, Facebook, and our #mertoint and #MertonProud hashtags on Twitter. #LeadUpChat
A3: Tech can help foster a transparent environment for families, but also for other Ss => Ss post their work on a digital portfolio and seek feedback from a variety of sources https://t.co/j9sBdM4oiy#LeadUpChat
A2: We give time for kids to figure stuff out, even if they become a little frustrated. There is a time to directly teach content, and also a time for them to explore so they learn on their own (with our encouragement) #leadupchat
A2: This is where the foundation of what I teach takes center stage. I teach STEAM, & we are constantly intertwining content and connecting our learning. Also, like @KristyS1985 mentioned we do a good amount of reflective writing & communicating. #LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A3: I don't have S's, but I want to encourage T's to have S's blog this year. I added a Google Form to my coaching site for them to fill out if they do. #LeadUpChat If I get around to badging this year, this would be a T's badge!
I think that's something most connected educators have in common. I don't understand how some can be content with the status quo when there is so much we can do! #LeadUpChat
Providing an opportunity for publishing or sharing with an authentic audience is the highest form of real world learning. Purpose drives excellence and passion for investing in the process!!! Content + Soft Skills = real world #Leadupchat#futurepastskills
I also love to see how student digital creations, as the year progresses, documents growth. Student learning and growth is visible and that's motivation to keep taking on challenges and continue on the journey. #LeadUpChat
Yes. This is like creating a headache and making them wait weeks for the aspirin (Dan Meyer's thought) It would need to be a migraine to stick that long, though. #leadupchat
A3: Always looking for other ways to publish student work => thinking of having Ss create their own google sites for a digital portfolio, possibly seesaw?? Any thoughts? #LeadUpChat
Yeah. This is something I’m learning recently as well. I’m grieving the loss of my idealism. Currently between anger and depression stages of grief #leadupchat
In reply to
@latoyadixon5, @PrincipalPaul, @ShakeUpLearning
#leadupchat A3- Ss need the freedom to present their ideas locally and globally. In the past my Ss have participated in @dfcusa and just recently started a campaign to help with @SDG2030https://t.co/ZHxSWKBl1j
A3 When Ss publish their work this provides additional external motivation that encourages them to produce their best product. This process also provides practice & relevance for careers that will expect our learners to engage with others beyond their immediate circle #leadupchat
Conversations are a starting point! It cannot happen overnight or be "done" to people, but sharing the vision of where we are headed as a school must happen, even if it is a little scary. #leadupchat
Not feeling as I have a ton of ideas to contribute to this question, so thanks #leadupchat for the #mirrorcheck this AM as an Instructional Leader! #stepitupman
A3: I have to be careful for confidentiality purposes. I show S work but am careful how I do it. My Ss are presenting to city council on Friday. They will communicate ways they feel our community can be improved. #leadupchat
A2 By having a foundation grounded in pedagogy, a deep understanding of the standards & where S’s are in their learning, we are able to design learning experiences that are engaging & meaningful & build on prior learning. #LeadUpChat
Q2: How does the learning grow and evolve in your classroom, beyond one-and-done activities? How do you connect one activity to the next?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A3 Gradual release with permission. Students will produce the best of their work when they know the reach of their work. Iteration will make it better. Allowing them the opportunity in class first. Peer reach. #leadupchat
This was a complete game changer for my classes. The first thing they said when they got a comment, "Miss Bell, can I revise my work? I didn't know anyone besides you would read it!" #LeadUpChat
I am working to understand that we are all different, motivated by different things, and satisfied by different things. That’s ok. We need to build on each other’s strengths because diversity of talent builds great teams. #LeadUpChat
If you want to dive deeper into the conversation we are having today, pick up a copy of "Shake Up Learning" available at Amazon. @ShakeUpLearning will help you to understand the why, what, & how of approaching learning w/ a fresh perspective.

A3: Ss effort changes when they are creating for an authentic audience- publishing is a must! My Ss turn their research findings into podcast episodes. They are published on iTunes. The pride on my Ss face when they see this is priceless. https://t.co/7JbdXKNV71#LeadUpChat
A3 definitely, as much as is possible. An authentic audience is crucial for students to feel like their work matters. Only reason why not is the filtering of websites that do this the best. #leadupchat
WHY is our focus this year. Identifying our personal why, team why, and collective staff why. We know what and how we do what we do, but getting down to the WHY is so powerful - and can help us grow exponentially! #myglenoakswhy#glenoaksschool#pantherprofessors#leadupchat
Love the thoughts on iteration here, Chris. Important that we facilitate learning experiences for our Ss that require them to fine-tune the product that they will present @cooper1503#leadupchat
A3: Publishing for the world = authentic audience. It's vital for students to see and hear their voices in a meaningful context. We do service learning in the community, write and reads through @Flipgrid with elementary schools, and real product reviews #leadupchat
A3: I hesitate to open the flood gates. I prefer students publish in a controlled, safe environment. Maybe this is because I'm serving elementary students. I want an authentic audience, but I also want some protections. It's a careful balance. #leadupchat
A3: Our Ts are invited and encouraged to use SeeSaw, Twitter, and other social media forms to share classroom learning and S products. #LeadUpChat
Click on #JRErocks#JREchat to see some things from this year on Twitter!
This year we are going to do a whole school poetry book publishing party night with readings and food - and pair it with a new art display hopefully too #leadupchat
That is the perfect metaphor for it. Often times it seems like tech becomes a digital version of a worksheet. How can we empower Ts to maximize tech usage in their planning? #Leadupchat
In reply to
@HartofLearning, @mikepaul, @ShakeUpLearning
A3: This is still an area of debate among my Ts beliefs. We use QR codes for Ss to share w/parents, staff & other Ss. We have used FlipGrid for numerous activities & welcomed parent flipgrid videos to Ss. Other ways we share are through SeeSaw, Twitter, FB & DOJO. #leadupchat
I think that was my problem as a young student. Besides NOT being an auditory learner (which was the only way then), I didn't understand why I need to know the things we were taught. I was that kid... but why? ;) #leadupchat
I think it's a process and a journey. But the more we know about our students, how to tap into their strengths and interests, the more we are inspired to find the "just right" tool, etc. to help them really shine! #leadupchat#teacherinspriation Isn't that Ts don't sleep? LOL
A3: I allow students to publish their work for each other, rather than the world. I teach elementary school, and feel that students need to practice sharing on a smaller subset before going public. Google classroom is perfect practice. #LeadUpChat
Q4: How do you help build a continuous learning mindset in your students? Have you ever had students set their own learning goals?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A3: After listening to @ShakeUpLearning and @DitchThatTxtbk I’ve learned more about the impact of student publishing! I’ll definitely share this info with my team! Keep sharing your wonderful ideas! #LeadUpChat
A3: Create a space for Ss to not only publish their work but get feedback through the interaction with the public. Our @RWScholars built businesses and made over $6000.00 in their first year. #leadupchat
A2: Learning grows and evolves in the classroom with mindful unit planning. @La_Believes ELA Guidebooks are a perfect example of weaving meaningful curriculum across contents. Hurricanes for example are explored via novels in ELA/anchor&cultural phenomena in Sci/SS #leadupchat
Fantastic! Opportunities for kids to do quick writes, reflections, and embed analysis opportunities in those content areas deepens learning. #LeadUpChat
A3: One of the things I want to try this year is to connect with different ‘experts in the field’ and have students take part in virtual field trips...it would help them to ‘publish’ their thinking more globally through the questions they ask and the ideas they share. #LeadUpChat
I imagine (dont really know) it involves leaving a few breadcrumbs along the way that you’ll pay off down the line #leadupchat sort of like infinity stones.
A3: My students were always encouraged to expect their work to be published. Normally when we finished our PBLs, unit project were always published [currently can’t find my links!]. #LeadupChat
A3. I think students need the space and time to create. If we are preparing them to compete in a knowledge economy that will require collaboration, connection, and inspiration, denying them the opportunity to publish any work seems almost like being neglectful. #Leadupchat
A4: Goal-setting is empowering (and an #ISTE standard)! Help students to set goals both for the content in your class, and BEYOND. What would s's choose to learn?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
Absolutely! I have had students publish to parents and other classrooms, including those of friends across the country. I think it's important to be selective about how we expose our little ones to others. #leadupchat
A4 Our staff does a good job of guiding students to set goals, and as the year progresses, students do more of this on their own. Sometimes the focus is on testing, though, and it could be so much more. #LeadUpChat
Q4: How do you help build a continuous learning mindset in your students? Have you ever had students set their own learning goals?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A4: Ss should be the driver in setting their academic and social goals. Ts should confer with them individually and assist Ss with tracking their own progress throughout the timeline. #LeadUpChat
You're right, Jenn. Exposing our Ss to those initial lessons in that supervised space helps prepare for later publishing in unrestricted mediums @JennSagendorf#leadupchat
It's also really hard to get older students to set goals that aren't grade-focused, but learning focused. They get so caught up in the Game of School! #LeadUpChat
A3 I’m a huge proponent of students publishing their digital work for an audience. #Prek students app smash to create digital books & teachers share them with parents via @seesaw or other online communication platforms. #LeadUpChat
A2. My American Lit classes take a trip to an abandoned 19th century asylum to destigmatize mental health. Reading stories learning of this awful history, then using the DSM-5 to reflect on contemporary alternatives to institutionalization. https://t.co/KroaiT3PyF#LeadUpChat
a4 My HS students have so many fun activities that I have not been successful having them set serious learning goals (yet?) But I am teaching them to "reach" for learning. Day 1 HW: email me. #Leadupchat
Low/No budget option, have S's create Google Drive folders for their favorite work, create a QR code or shortened URL to post outside classrooms or on T's website. Instant portfolio with S's ownership! #leadupchat
A4: we use leadership notebooks where kids set goals and track progress (data and reflections) weekly and teachers conference every few weeks with each kid around their notebook and academic and personal goals #Leadupchat
A4 It is a continuous loop. Starting from wherever we are, setting goals, making a learning plan, practice, feedback, reflection, next step goals, repeat. Sharing and celebrating along the way help build confidence. #leadupchat
A3 We want our kids sharing in a variety of ways with authentic audiences. This year, our Passion Project will be published (multimedia) as opposed to traditional "classroom" speeches. Expanded, authentic audiences. #leadupchat@Greg_Froese@SJNeill13
Q4: How do you help build a continuous learning mindset in your students? Have you ever had students set their own learning goals?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A3: I absolutely advocate for my Ss to get published. My intro to students always includes a rousing spiel about how "MY KIDS" get published and are published. The joy in their faces light up! I purposely tailor assignments to scholarship essays or writing contests #leadupchat
Definitely - almost like students achieve levels, but each level or episode has a cliff hanger that makes them want to learn, question and explore the next episode! Maybe hidden “Easter eggs” within lessons as well? #leadupchat
A4. If I were in a school district I would talk a lot about the power of revision. As students publish I would give them freedom and opportunity to revise their work. That’s something technologyafgords us; our work can evolve as things change. I’d capitalize on that. #Leadupchat
A3: I would definitely allow Ss to publish their work to the world, it empowers Ssforntheir voice to be heard(seen). I have used #kidblog in the past as a medium for Ss to publish their voice. #ShakeUpLearning#LeadUpChat
That's a true and unfortunate statement. Families help to maintain that focus. Goals don't need to be fuzzy, but they shouldn't only focus on grades and test scores. #LeadUpChat
A4 Students want to know the end game. The concept is SO important but the implementation of that concept is even more important. The Answer/Goal of WHY learn this should never have the word "because" in it. #leadupchat
A4: S goal setting is 1 of our campus' main focus this year - Ts will confer with Ss to set goals, scaffold, review goals, & either amend or make new goals. It's exciting stuff! #LeadUpChat
3) An example of how we publish student work is "The Anthology Project." There is a book release party that students and parents are invited to attend. It highlights student voice in our school @PISDReynolds! #LeadUpChat
#leadupchat A4- Ss setting their own goals is very important. I have always made it a practice for them to set their own goals. Academic goals are important but so are social goals as well
Q4: How do you help build a continuous learning mindset in your students? Have you ever had students set their own learning goals?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A4: I show everyone my continuous learning mindset! Students set their own goals at a variety of levels. Alongside goal setting, students need to practice REFLECTION. We all do. #LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
Q4: We build a continuous learning mindset for students by FIRST building a continuous learning mindset in us as educators. We need to lead by example. Do we discuss with our students our own learning goals? That is how we build trust. That is how we build culture. #LeadUpChat
Q4: How do you help build a continuous learning mindset in your students? Have you ever had students set their own learning goals?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
I start with Google Calendar to plan my days. Then delve in deeper. It's important to teach digital citizenship before getting into the tech itself. https://t.co/pFdDWMFwDc#LeadupChat
In reply to
@Leckeythetechie, @mikepaul, @ShakeUpLearning
A4. It’s important to model the mindset as a teacher - then explicitly teach it thru activities- it takes time to grow the mindset. Our kids set own goals with MAP testing and Naviance goals - both Focus on growth mindset #leadupchat
A4 Would love to see more on student goal setting, faculty learning on the how tos, it's not all about testing, but the $$ and report card to the world comes from those scores. Sad, but true!
A4 We help our Ss plot their learning goals throughout the year. This helps provide a tangible artifact to show them that learning never stops. We are always asking "What's next?" This shows students how much they have learned & encourages next steps in their learning #leadupchat
A3: Another central theme in addressing this Q is the extent to which audience matters--if at all. One time, I observed learners increasing their own video view count--bc they wanted to be popular: https://t.co/IcuNs612wk We need to post/share for the right reasons. #leadupchat
A4. The number one way we build continuous learning in others is by being the example of that in our own work and lives. When we are explicit about what we are trying to model for others we enhance our ability to influence them. #Leadupchat
A4: Ss start the day by establishing daily goals. One of the first lessons we have each year is performance goals vs. learning goals. We also have a weekly growth mindset goal. #leadupchat
A4 I try to be open with Ss that I am a lifelong learner and that we all need to be in a dynamic world. I provide strategies I use to keep growing, most importantly setting learning goals. I am using learning reflections at the start to promote setting personal goals. #leadupchat
A4: When teaching AVID (a great program) we had students create short term and long term goals. We would revisit the goals periodically and rewrite if needed or say “Score!” if we reached one! #LeadUpChat Vision Boards are another great way for Ss to “see” their goals!
A4: Developing continuous learning mindsets has much to do with choice, voice and pursuing passions...create opportunities for this to happen and watch lasting engagement soar! #LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A4: I start my semester off with the concept of a growth mindset. If they change how they view their learning, the things that they engage in every day change! #Leadupchat#empowerstudents
A2) learning is neither an event or linear. We have to be comfortable with understanding it is a cycle and grounding it in other areas of learning. The transference of ideas across content areas and real world connections is key. #LeadUpChat
As a library asst the closest thing I can say I do to encourage Ss to make goals/growth mindset is to make lists of bks they want to read & keep track & come back for more then add to the list! Try diff genres or complete a series! #LeadUpChat#webblc
Q4: How do you help build a continuous learning mindset in your students? Have you ever had students set their own learning goals?
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A3. HECK YEAH! Students use class specific Twitter accounts to annotate and discuss their findings throughout the school year. We record small group podcasts on iTunes to get the hang for discussion. And we use @Flipgrid and @YouTube to master presentation skills. #LeadUpChat
A4: We build a continuous learning mindset for students by FIRST building a continuous learning mindset in us as educators. We need to lead by example. Do we discuss with our students our own learning goals? That is how we build trust. That is how we build culture. #LeadUpChat
Q4: How do you help build a continuous learning mindset in your students? Have you ever had students set their own learning goals?

They are a clothing and media company called @osidekulture which blends the urban and beat culture of our town! The hard work and amazing leadership of @KristinaVsqz and @Tom_voris cannot be expressed enough. These AMAZING Ts MADE it HAPPEN #leadupchat
LOVE Google Keep! Ever since I listened to one of the @GTeacherTribe podcasts when it was mentioned, I've added GIF's and Images to my daily ones! #leadupchat

A4) As an admin team we are being intentional about building 5cs of culture this year. For students and adult learning we are putting the spotlight on Creating a Culture that Cultivates and Creating a Culture that Creates. #LeadUpChat
Yess!!! Maybe the Easter egg is a connection to other classes in the school, other schools, the community, and beyond! How cool to skype with students from other states or countries to figure out the Easter egg??#leadupchat#dreambig
A4 Love the “continuous”. When my 15 year old comes home talking about something he learned and digging deeper... What can I say, that teacher is getting cookies:) #leadupchat
A3: We have to teach students to first protect their identity online, but, student work should be published for an authentic audience larger than just the teacher's eyes. We can't act as though school and the "real world" are separate. #leadupchat
This sounds like an awesome start! Do students have the opportunity to share with each other? Community members (Ss, Ts, Ps, etc) all post on a @Padlet to share what they're reading and review it. We also do a March Madness bracket to see which book wins! #LeadUpChat
A4b In ROOM 104, they see that I AM A CONTINUOUS LEARNER...I believe so much in modeling the behaviors we want our students to have! We do this a parents, and indeed our students are our children for 9 months! Well, mine are my children for life! 😉#leadupchat
Great point, @ShakeUpLearning. I'm wondering how do you define authentic audiences? Does the authenticity have to be defined or realized by the one doing the posting--the digital learning portfolio owner? #leadupchat
Agree, Tracey. Our Ts practice this daily with our Ss. Also important that we are intentional with guiding our Ss at the end of the day to reference the learning goals set at the start of the day and reflect how and why the goals were met @TraceyEnser#leadupchat
There's a tricky balance between creativity & efficient learning. HS students have so many fun things to do. It may be difficult to convince them to invest that kind of time to have fun achieving math goals. #leadupchat
I can definitely see that happening! Even taking that style and connecting it to students teaching students a concept they’ve learned in their learning. Video diaries of their experiences while “watching the series” unfold! #leadupchat
A5 We must model creativity and innovation as much as we can. Try something new and be public about it. Show the struggles as well as the successes. Then celebrate even the little things with students and staff. #LeadUpChat
A5: As a teacher, no one gave me a textbook on how to teach creativity. You can't teach creativity, you UNLEASH it! It's about creating a culture and environment that is conducive to creation and innovation.
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
If we create the conditions for adult learning to occur in our building then student learning will be elevated. The adults must be curious and creative themselves. Kids are a mirror of the adult learning culture we create. #LeadUpChat
A4b: We also study growth mindset and the brain. We learn how you can grow your brain and study famous failures. The Ss interview people and learn how they failed and succeeded. #leadupchat
A4: Especially in STEAM as we are pushing for innovative thinking it is necessary for Ss to understand that #failureISanoption & something that leads us to progress. Yes, I am a FIRM believer in Ss setting their own goals and reflecting on them often #ShakeUpLearning#LeadUpChat
A4: Ts have embraced S goal setting at our campus. Ss are tracking their reading levels, site-word recognition & test results through simple graphs, data sheets, color-coded/number systems. Confidentiality is maintained for all! Conversations are data strong!
#LeadUpChat
A5 Innovation requires us to look at new way of doing things and being willing to take chances to make change. Choice in the classroom and being open to different ways to show learning fosters this idea. @geniushour#leadupchat
Share articles, books, etc that I am reading that help me grow. Encourage staff to build a PLN and engage on Twitter. Provide a venue for staff to share ideas and resources so they can learn from each other. And it continues into the classroom... #leadupchat
A3 Here is a film that was made by a fully integrated 9-12 cross-discipline group last Spring. Ss explored social and enviro issues facing the Colorado River watershed by engaging with water users, senators, federal/local agencies. Powerful. https://t.co/C6Q1O2L8Ls#leadupchat
A5: I try to innovate as an educator and share my own thinking/learning. It's also important to get excited when you see others innovate. We all need encouragement. Sometimes it's scary to try new things or share your ideas with others. #leadupchat
So maybe we need to start sooner with students so they engage in this process at an earlier age and building on their understanding of true LEARNING goals. Then build capacity among staff to practise this with consistency across grades. 😊 #LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A4: I do not teach units that end with a test and then move on. We build one unit off of another - always adding to our learning. This means new lessons each year - with student input. Small assessments along the way to drive the instruction. Learning is NOT finite. #leadupchat
Creative and innovative thinking and doing is not an event…it is a daily habit. It is fostered through curiosity and openness to experience. Creating that cognitive mindset and way of thinking is great beginning to building that kind of environment at any level. #leadupchat
A5: We host a genius hour on Fridays for Ss to explore topics that interest them. Ts take a backseat (guide) as Ss make discoveries. Our showcase from last year: https://t.co/XbonH9vwEu#leadupchat
#leadupchat A5- @RSScrew Creativity and innovation are part of the culture! This week alone we made our own covered wagons and we are working on designing board games to teach math skills to the 1st graders st our elementary school @EdGoulart@ren
A5 We have to create an environment that encourages Ss to take risks and trust that their learning is the focus, even if it ends in failure that produces that learning. #LeadUpChat
A5: Begins with assuring Ss feel safe to share and question with Ts and peers. Then, utilize authentic assessments where Ss can show learning in a variety of ways. This is where Ss’ creativity comes alive! #LeadUpChat
If we create the conditions for adult learning to occur in our building then student learning will be elevated. The adults must be curious and creative themselves. Kids are a mirror of the adult learning culture we create. #LeadUpChat
I completely agree! I don’t like to limit my wacky brainstorming! I’ve learned to think big and then refine for the skills and learning needs of my Ss 😄 #Leadupchat#failingforward
Grateful that this is not only one of my teachers but that we are creating a culture of innovative thinking! If you do not follow @m_s_magic start today!
A5 We know that creativity is the thoughts and innovation is the action. As leaders, we know that we are responsible for creating the conditions where our teams can innovate. Constantly asking how can we do this better and affirming our teams through change is key #leadupchat
Yes. Professional development should be delivered as expected in classrooms. It takes tons of time to develop that kind of PD, but if there are 100 teachers in that session, that's 100x classroom effect. #leadupchat
I tried days of the week, but that was too hard to keep up with. This way, I only have 2 or 3 pinned at a time. I share it with my personal gmail so I see it on my phone too! #leadupchat

A5: carving out time at school for kids to pursue their own curiosity, passions, and creativity. We feel pressure because of everything that has to be learned, and because of mandates with testing and such. We need to do it anyway. #leadupchat
A5. In my recent blog post, I wrote about this from the ed leader perspective. I think we have to begin by making sure we don’t see innovation as disruption. Read more here: https://t.co/OOuyvJEOiq#LeadUpChat
A5 pt 2 We also have to not just allow but encourage differing perspectives. Each kid brings something different to the table. That has immense value in learning. Embrace it. #LeadUpChat
A4: This is an area I need to work on- Students setting goals. I've used this template in the past: https://t.co/zIzSKL3NAB but I need to get back into using it and reflecting more often. #LeadUpChat
A5: you have to give staff the green light! If it's best for kids and their growth and learning it's the right thing to do! Don't feel like you need to ask to take risks and innovate - don't wait, lead! #Leadupchat
A5 Give students more flexibility in the presentation of their knowledge, We have so many formal constructs that are just now applicable any more. Think blogs/vlogs/podcast. I know we need a baseline but we can't always live there. Neither can students. #leadupchat
A5 we must provide ways (maker space, genius, passion projects) where kids are given chance to explore-create-design-test ideas). Foster it by doing staff PD so they “feel” how the process works and help them provide experiences for kids. Design thinking. #leadupchat
A5: students cannot be worried about grades if they are expected to give us their best without fear of failure. We have to change that mindset. Channeling your passion to showcase your learning vs. traditional assessment modes allows for that. #leadupchat
A5: Ss need to be able to test their creativity, put it into action, & discover how they could revise it to improve their idea. Providing as many opportunities to do this as possible is how I encourage their creativity leading to innovation #LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning@gcouros
A5: You plant seeds, then give space and observe. If students/teachers aren’t used to it- they are frozen. So it is important to be a support/example- when needed. Give “roots and wings” #leadupchat#ShakeUpLearning
A5 Get to work! Ss want to DO. They don’t just want to hear about what some dead dude did a hundred years ago. Don’t learn about science...behave as scientists. Don’t learn about literature...be writers. Don’t learn about math...be mathematicians. #leadupchat#whatschoolcouldbe
A5: Risk taking, failing forward, and outside the box thinking should be encouraged, not quieted. There are many paths and ways to problem solve! Show the world our ideas matter. #LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A5: As the campus learning leader, I encourage risk-taking, technology implementation, & anything that could be highly engaging academically. We fail & make mistakes, but we grow from it. I mess up in front of my Ts ALL the time & OWN IT! They can mess up too! #leadupchat
A4. Wanted to engage my students as equal partners from day ☝️ so I turned my syllabus into a welcome back game. Now it’s a team challenge through 10 stations w/ action-oriented work products at each. Goal setting & ENGAGEMENT. Steal it! https://t.co/NvuvBCNiqk#leadupchat
26 minutes til #Leadlap talk on learner centered leadership!
I'm going old school today, Tweetdeck unavailable but I'm up for the challenge!
Who's joining, what device r u using? @dellwein@burgess_shelley@BethHouf
A5: As an educator, you must be creative & innovative, you must demonstrate this. If you expect it, you must be doing it yourself. Lead by example. Show how it can develop into something magical, for learning! #LeadUpChat
A5: teens are often afraid to fail because they might “look stupid” in front of peers. To foster creativity successfully, Ts have to create a safe classroom environment for risk taking- and need to walk the walk themselves in front of Ss! #Leadupchat
A5: I've learned that reflection is a great catalyst for innovation. We regularly pause in my classroom to look at what we're doing and why and how we can make it more relevant and effective #LeadUpChat
A4: Especially in STEAM as we are pushing for innovative thinking it is necessary for Ss to understand that #failureISanoption & something that leads us to progress. Yes, I am a FIRM believer in Ss setting their own goals and reflecting on them often #ShakeUpLearning#LeadUpChat
a5 I like to send "genius" emails home. When a student offers a different take in a whole-class discussion, I probe to extract the "wow" and then email home about their impressive classroom input #leadupchat
A5: I incorporate S voice and ask them what they want to learn. I create a question based on this and let them explore and do their thing. I also do room transformations based on their choices and surprise them every week or two. #leadupchat
A5: To foster T creativity and innovation, our district adopted #nearpod this year #leadupchat
At the campus level, admin supports T choice and voice for things like flexible seating, innovative ways to instruct, & opps to grow from PD!
A4: Personally, I believe that we have to teach students HOW to think about their learning. Kids feel like they have to "do" school and rarely realize the ed institution. The student gets the plate but we the school system are the restaurant, waiters, and menu. #leadupchat
Yes! And when in doubt, all it takes is conversation with students to clarify their learning or redirect to the next steps. Bringing the human side of learning back into education is so very exciting. A lot of work, but well worth it! #leadupchat
As always, thanks for sharing so many quality resources, @ShakeUpLearning. You don't just say and consume--you do and create. That's authentic. :) And very much appreciated by your audiences. #leadupchat
A5 By widening the learning paths for Ss to get to their AH-HAs in their way... I share that I have to work to be creative to make the classes better. I also admit I am OK with some of those strategies being massive failures so we can get to the ones that work! #leadupchat
A5) As a campus leader I can best encourage creativity and innovation by saying "yes." and "how can I support you?" It's that simple.
I don't ever want to be the barrier to a great student OR teacher learning opportunity.
#LeadUpChat
My 3rd graders keep asking me for their “math papers” so I asked what Math looked like to them- no wonder they struggled when I tried open ended problems where they had to critically think. Needed to step back & build up. #leadupchat#ShakeUpLearning
A5 I find myself always taking risks and trying new things, I look at what I need to teach and let my mind run with it...scares my teammates at times. My Ss will be encouraged more this year to share their ideas on topics we cover & let them go with it! #leadupchat
Reflection is a great skill to teach, it makes S's think about their learning and actually internalize it. I think that's the easiest thing to add to any classroom with the biggest impact! #leadupchat
Innovation can be minor tweaks that lead to continuous improvement. It’s a way of life that can disrupt what’s always been done, but if the culture supports it, it doesn’t have to feel like a disruption. #leadupchat
Ideally, it would be great to see that flipped. We fill our days with time to pursue curiosity, passions, and creativity and carve out some time for us to gather the data that it is so worthwhile, which we already know is true. #LeadUpChat
A6: Creativity and Innovation require risk-taking. We have to give students opportunities to do things and answer questions that don't just have ONE correct answer, to find creative solutions.
#LeadUpChat#ShakeUpLearning
A6. I must model for students it’s ok to take risk and fail (we call it fail forward). We have created student leadership groups (ambassadors who help new kids and peer mentors who help students with needs) and we do passion projects! Love it. #leadupchat
A6: I have stopped autopsy grading - waiting until the final draft/copy to make comments/ suggestions. Now we work, revise, consult many times before a grade. If we wait until the final copy/draft/project we lose the chance for authentic learning/improvement. #leadupchat
Within our school, each teacher has a poster outside his or her door that says, "I am currently reading . . ." We have a teacher reviewed section in the library with student reviews on a protected Google Doc that you could get to with a QR code. #LeadUpChat
Yes. I’m wondering why it often does though in Education. It seems to me that in other industries innovation is well received, even rewarded, and in education it is sometimes seen as risky behavior or even counter culture behavior. I have no answers...just questions #LeadUpChat
A5: Something we offer in our Kinder classroom are LOOSE PARTS. Making a variety of loose parts available to students truly inspires creativity and innovation. Sometimes we offer provocations with the parts and other times they are just put out and magic happens! 😊 #LeadUpChat
A6 When you give students choice and opportunity you encourage risk. Many students are so used to doing things exactly how they are told in a certain way. #leadupchat
I'm still learning how to do that well. It's so tempting to just shoot out answers. The curric I'm piloting provides "pocket questions" but now I'm starting to come up with my own based on what a student is saying. #leadupchat
A6: you have to keep telling Ss is ok to make mistakes and help them learn from them - each week on announcements I bring up the need to fail at things to get better! #Leadupchat
A6 Students take risks all of the time, but we might not notice. Speaking in front of class. Trying a new art project. Reading a different genre of book. Playing a new game or with new friends at recess. We can build on those every day! #LeadUpChat
This also helps build the mindset that we are not aiming to get done and move on. As one S said last year, "Your writing is never actually finished. This is just my latest revision." #LeadUpChat
A6: I see students taking the most academic risks when they feel safe in their learning environment. Risk taking can include augmenting the learning content, process, product, or environment. Though without a safe learning environment, status quo often remains #LeadUpChat
A6: We started “design challenges”- to introduce we chatted about risk and #failforward But many ended up not working with group and in tears. Again- I did a #failforward and expected too much too fast. #leadupchat#shakeituplearning
A6: Many of the things we do require taking risks. I remind them of how we wouldn’t have potato chips or ice cream cones without risks. I also remind them they aren’t alone and we will help, if needed. #leadupchat
I agree, many educators are innovating and don’t realize it. Some hear the term and feel it’s a risk. We just can’t hang back and avoid moving forward any longer. All in the relationships, culture and developing a shared vision around the why. It’s an ongoing journey! #leadupchat
A6 Celebrate risk and iteration and then let them ask you instead of you telling them. Growth and learning is in the mess. Give them the freedom to own their education. #leadupchat

They have to feel safe to respond, create, or even raise their hand even when they are unsure of the answer. Breaks my heart when I see students afraid respond. #LeadUpChat
Creating an environment where taking risks, stretching past our comfort zones, has a cascading effect…creating that space for educators allows it to cascading down into the classroom. #leadupchat
And I love your questions and thoughts. The answers emerge through all of our conversations, learning, and experiences. I share many of your same wondering! #leadupchat
A6: Now in my role I try and give teachers the tools to take risks. What I learn here with you and through the magic of Twitter I take back to my team (teachers)! My goal is that students will be the ultimate recipients! 🙏🏻#LeadUpChat
My favorite day of the week!!! Today we are introducing Genius Hour or what I like to call Passion Fridays! I cannot wait to see what the students turn out this semester. #iteachhealth#geniushour#passionproject#transformlearning
A6: I think opportunities are any teachable moment. The challenge for many is building S ownership in the classroom, building, and their own opinions. Allow Ss to speak about topics they have knowledge of before the more challenging ones. Then they will take risks. #leadupchat
A6: Ss take risks when they have the courage to express their thoughts and opinions while learning tolerance for opposing views. Philosophical Chairs and Socratic Seminars are great structured spaces to practice this important life skill! #LeadUpChat#AVIDStrategies
a6 When a S comment seems off, I probe. Inevitably they are making a logical but false connection no one else thought of. That's an opportunity "Oh, yes! Remember when...I bet no one else even thought of that, so they aren't related, but the difference is important." #leadupchat
A special thank you to @ShakeUpLearning for being our guest this morning. Dynamic learning is not just for a few but ALL! Thank you to everyone for being here today and learning with us at #LeadUpChat

A6: I agree with @posickj. Risk is defined by the risk-taker. What's a risk for one learner may not be a risk for another. Misunderstanding this can put relationships and daily learning climates at risk. #leadupchat
A6 Students take risks all of the time, but we might not notice. Speaking in front of class. Trying a new art project. Reading a different genre of book. Playing a new game or with new friends at recess. We can build on those every day! #LeadUpChat
One of the best experiences was when I branched out to do virtual learning by partnering our class with another. So much unfolded, it was amazing! #leadupchat
A6: Ss take risks by pursuing passion to build understanding. A phenomenal teacher at my school, @MsPettyTweets, does a "What makes you wonder?" project that's full of risk taking, relevant skills, and authentic learning. #leadupchat#ShakeUpLearning
Thank you so much for chatting with me with morning! It was an honor to be your host. Please let me know if I can help you and your staff with anything!
Bye y'all!
