TNedchat is a way for educators in Tennessee to share thoughts, resources, and information. The weekly chat is moderated by Jessica Warner (@jessawarner) and Samantha Bates (@sjsbates).
A1 It empowers students because they feel special and they have to learn the info well beforehand. It also gives students a change to see what it's like to be a teacher win/win #tnedchat
A1: new perspective, direct connection. Often we guess or try to anticipate how students will respond. Students leading PD will remove that mystery #tnedchat
A1 I had some of my Ss do this recently, great for them to build leadership skills & great for Ts to hear from Ss, switching leader/learner roles #stuvoice#tnedchat
A1 Also a great way to build relationships, get to know other Ss of school, my Ss loved this exper, they had also presented at our state & local #edtech conferences, but this was better for them w/their own Ts #tnedchat
A1) Last week we had a parent night where students presented some of the programs to parents, but we have not had Ss teach Ts. I can’t think of many others ways that would empower student voice more #tnedchat
Kristen, from PA, 6th grade physical science, anticipating another snow day, waiting for my 2 year old to come down from her free Rita’s sugar rush to go to sleep. I’ll be popping in and out. #TNEdChat
A2 Ask Ts what they want to learn about and see if your students have those skill sets...my student led tech team is about to do an escape room for Ts to teach about STEAM tools! https://t.co/hktx9Z3Cpv#tnedchat
A2 Student led PD doesn't have to be face to face- my lower school student led tech team created this website for teachers last year: https://t.co/5Jh59bkuBO#tnedchat
A2: Identify the students who will develop confidence by sharing learned skills and authentically receptive teacher learners who won’t patronize such students. Provide students with low-risk opportunities at first. #tnedchat
A2) most students want to give their input of how they learn. Shouldn't we listen to them to provide them with our best? Transparency is a beautiful thing. #tnedchat

A2) Maybe survey students to see which programs and supports help them the most and then present on its impact. Reluctant Teachers might buy in more when they hear the impact on students #tnedchat
Amen! WE as edus need to be willing to get feedback on our classroom processes....today's ease of google forms and exit tickets can make a difference #tnedchat
A1: It’s amazing how much they can teach us and how honest they are with us! They can help us develop lessons and use resources and even manage classroom discipline that will support their learning. #TNEdChat
A3 Yes, :) I sat in with my Ss as they led, it was great to see them answering questions, especially the pushback and sharing their passion for choices and #pbl#tnedchat
A3: I have not, but would love to! Students are filled with their own amazing experiences and cultural capital that they bring with them every day they enter through the schoolhouse door. They should be respected and valued! #tnedchat
A3 Erryday. If I'm not sure of something I ask a student, they usually lead me in the right direction. I am trying to connect my Ss to more opportunities to teach their teachers in fun ways #tnedchat
A3: I talked with students hosting poster session @iste 2017 conf. Their excitement and knowledge made me want to ask questions and listen to their ideas and experience. #tnedchat
A3: I have helped to establish numerous opportunities for students to “teach” adults. Not all PD has to have a formalized approach. I hope to have some students present their use of technology at @TN_TETA TSI teacher day this summer. I love learning from Ss. #TnEdChat

I think it was @gcouros That talked about how a kid asked if teachers were doing all this amazing stuff in PD why the classroom was so boring. #TnEdChat
#TnEdChat A1 Student led PD reverses the role of the traditional model. It empowers students to lead...and it requires them to master the topic before teaching it to others.-William Glasser
a2:. When ss show an interest or knowledge about something, that’s the perfect opportunity! Some of my ss know about cars. I had one teach me about raising cows. They are so fortunate they are so knowledgeable! I ask a lot of ? to naturally curiosity of being a ss. #TNEdChat

A4 I think it might be a mix, only bc it is a different concept than the "traditional" classroom structure, but one that has so many benefits for Ts and Ss #tnedchat
A4 And it also helps with the fact that we are all learners, constant learners and that everyone has something to teach and something to learn #tnedchat
A4: I want to say yes, but I don't think many teachers would... Sadly, too many educators have a negative view of PD as it is, let alone student-led. We have to change that. #tnedchat
A4: I would expect some to be resistant. We've had the perception for years that teachers were the givers of knowledge. We should look at everyone as teachers - experts in various ways. #tnedchat
A4: This speaks to my response in A2. Not all educators are willing to learn from Ss. Some simply haven’t figured out how to shift their thinking/paradigm to do so. I want Ts and community to learn willingly and eagerly from Ss with true interest in their learning. #TnEdChat
Yes, and for other students. I was trying to build their speaking and conversation skills. I need to bring it back. It was such a great experience for them. #tnedchat
A4: However... For the ones that are willing to learn from students, there is MUCH to be learned. So much can be gained by just reaching out and asking kids what they think! #tnedchat
That's what my daughter wanted to do when I was talking to her about this chat... then she got into wanting to teacher her Spanish teacher math... #TnEdChat

A4: I would love to participate in something like that. Last year, I had a student run help desk. Teachers could ask kids questions about technology. We had several teachers love it and utilize it, and others didn't even step foot in it but did have questions. #tnedchat
"Positive Intent" I like that...I can say that I never try to make teachers do PD without that intent but sometimes it's hard to get teachers to see the motives are well grounded. #tnedchat
A3: officially no, but sometimes I feel like I do it daily. We are 1 to 1 and they often show me how to do things on their computer. They also show me new technologies and simulations or features of those! #TNEdChat
I think this hits on the fact that too many teachers just aren't student-centered, no matter what we've convinced ourselves or our colleagues. #tnedchat
A4: I would! But then, I am a forever student and willing to learn from anyone. But I’m confident in myself, what I do, & my ability, many others aren’t. #TNEdChat

A4b: Our Learning Gallery Walk opened the opportunity for interested Ts and community to learn from Ss (low-risk and not forced): https://t.co/0CiwoDxpEJ#TnEdChat
A4: I think they would learn way more than the content they were covering. They would learn how students want to learn, and would tell you it’s not from a worksheet or reading off a presentation! #TNEdChat

Relevance and context should be considered - but my vote is yes! Students are our business and no one is a better expert on that than students! #tnedchat
I think that more are than aren’t in my experience, but those who aren’t are often too satisfied with an antiquated model of learning expectations. #tnedchat
I'm glad to hear that. I see a lot of "sage on the stage" mentality and it's frustrating. Good learning begins with student-centered instruction. #tnedchat
