#NVedchat is dedicated to increasing communication and collaboration of education related topics in the State of Nevada. Originally, created by Mr. Snehal Bhakta.
I’m Kevin from Indianapolis, IN. I am a science educator and eCoach. I have made so many mistakes throughout my career that have led me to where I am today. Those mistakes have put me where I am supposed to be. #NVedchat
I'm Amy, an eLearning coach from Indiana. The decision to leave the classroom was one of the hardest I've ever made. But I was tired of only being able to impact such a small parts of my kids' education. I want to help make learning fun in all classes. #NVedchat
I'm Snehal from Vegas. I work in #CareerTechEd. I would always let Ss turn in stuff late. Then I stopped...no credit. Did things change in a hurry. Still accepted late every now and then...got to always mix it up! #NVedchat
Reflection lets one analize true results and allows time to be proud of accomplishments yet focus on ways to change the results if there were mistakes #nvedchat
R1: Most of my reflecting is done through chats like this. I share our thoughts and ideas and want feedback. You provide feedback to me that I use daily in my room. #NVedchat
A1-How can you improve if you don't reflect on your mistakes and then improve upon them. If you don't reflect, then you won't see the value of learning it or how far you have come in the process. It's the invisible "r" in success. #NVedchat
R1: I think I would reflect more if i blogged as well. That’s my area to improve next year. I’m having my Ss next year do the same. I’m teaching a new content area so reflection will be essential moving forward. Already nervous about it. #NVedchat
R2: I’ve always been a data geek. I also think that chunking and assessing for learning is very beneficial for mastery of content and recollection. Having Ss keep track of their data helps a lot. #NVedchat
A2-Go over projects, activities, assessments, etc..as a group and individually depend on situation. Ask for the positives "+" and what you would change "deltas" and why?
You'll be amazed at the learning that happens. #NVedchat
A1 I used to have students write reflections on their artwork after completion. It helped them (and me) understand their process, struggles, and triumphs, and it gave me an insight into their thought processes. #NVedchat
A2: I try to use past experiences (success & failure) to explain topics to students. It is important to let students know you have failed to so they understand it is part of the learning process. @NevadaACTE will have a great PD this july on Failure and its importance! #NVedchat
Important to provide our S’s and selves with opportunity for authentic experiences. Project Based Learning needs to replace PowerPoints and worksheets. Much more difficult to reflect from a sit and get than a get up and go do it. #NVedchat
I used similar "data tracking" strategies with students. Eventually, they tracked stuff w/o me even telling them. Ss realized it could help them improve academically. #NVedchat
Showing Students...anyway...that you have failed shows that you are human, but also that you used it to improve and get better. Smells like #success...
#NVedchat
A2 We learn from reflecting on experience by asking ourselves how we grew from the experience and/or what do we still need to do to learn more #NVedchat
R3: there is NO WAY anyone provides enough time to reflect, reteach, relearn, etc. Those crazy pacing guides throw a wrench in the mess. Is it quantity or quality?? #NVedchat
A3-We never have enough time to reflection and that's why it is sooo important to try and do it as much as possible.
Image if Ss & Ts had a 30 mins to reflect each and every day...ok maybe not required...but it could lead to some powerful results in education! #NVedchat
A3: I have 22 chapters with skill sign offs in classes of 40+ Ss to get to over 36 weeks.. simply no. Sad bc it would be great to look back with Ss but have to weigh the options and that scale is very heavy on one side... #NVedchat
A2 I have students complete short paragraph written reflections specifically after a guest speaker or field trip. They have the opportunity to tell me the positives and criticisms which is a win win especially if you continue with similar adventures #NVedchat
I love having guest speakers! It really brings outside expert voices in to slam home topics covered in class. Also, a break from the main teacher can give S the reset they need. A requirement I feel for CTE programs #NVedchat
Getting feedback or "reflection" is key. Imagine giving a worksheet to students year after year and never asking them...was it good? Relevant? etc... Always a win win with reflecting & feedback. #NVedchat
I think systemically we put too much pressure on Ts to get through the curriculum. I also don’t feel we have taught Ts or Ss how to efficiently and effectively be reflective and to come to honest self feedback. Resources/ advice on how to do so appreciated! #NVedchat
A3 I worry that we don't even teach or model the purpose of reflecting. It's often viewed as busy work or a writing assignment given for the sake of having students write in a content area. #NVedchat
Perhaps scattered throughout the day?
Let's say every teacher agreed to take 5 mins at the start of every class to reflect on the last class and shared it with the teacher or at the end of each class... just throwing stuff out here... #NVedchat
A2 discussion after an event or experience helps me, sometimes people prefer to write it down. When I was working as an #athletictrainer following an emergency situation it always helped to review with a mentor, even when it went well just to review possible outcomes #NVedchat
I think it is important to establish the purpose early in the semester and model it WITH students. If we expect them to reflect, we should reflect and share with them. #NVedchat
Agreed! I would have students write the reflection in a journal and they had to reference other parts of it. Meaning they should over a period of time be able to show/share a change is something they are doing...even the smallest. Made the reflection meaningful #NVedchat
R4: I’m already reflecting on my content and how I conduct my class daily. I’m reflecting on my planning for my content for next year and readjusting for the new stuff. How can I #PBL these activities to meet AP expectations. Lots of reflection. Oh and Ss Surveys. #NVedchat
Thank you for joining #NVedchat tonight on #Reflection. Don't forget to follow the awesome tweeters from tonight and take a few minutes to reflect before you go to sleep tonight.
See you next week!
Where to start? Maybe first I need to have a discussion with my team and teachers to see what they feel they need to have more/better support from me so that I can develop a plan. Self reflection is good, but outside feedback is helpful as well! #NVedchat
Thanks everyone for being here and making me think. Looks like another three hour sleep night for me thinking about all the amazing things you all have shared. Have a fantastic week!! #NVedchat
A4 summer is a great time to reset focus, what worked what didn’t, explore new versions of lesson in summer & get ready to try again. I’m going to spend my summer prepping for block schedule! #NVedchat
In my #AVID classes we reflect after weekly tutoring sessions. I have found that it is important to constantly remind Ss that reflecting isn't summarizing. They need to think about what went well/bad, were there any "ah-ha" moments, what can be improved, etc. #NVedchat
Thanks so much for this great group of educators. I’d like to invite you to continue the convo this summer with some other great chats. #IDedchat#NVedchat#INeLearn, and #TeachNVchat. I think all these go all summer long. #EDpiper
