Randall Rank from Buhler, Kansas. 5th grade teacher and aspiring admin. Good morning
Q1. How do we elevate the teaching profession in a time when there are less students majoring in education?
This is my challenge right now - looking for more ways to get buy-in so it's not 'just one more thing' for staff.
Q: Where do you find instructional strategies that work?
Q1. Many Ts in our ELA hall are using flexible seating to varying degrees.
A1: if an idea comes from Twitter, tell them about! They have to see the value
A1: I share chats and meet ups with my staff. I also share things or other resources I learned from Twitter with them.
A1. Pt. 2: I give S/O to Ts who are new at Twitter/ encourage others to add them to their PLNs. Fill that feed with positivity!
A1: so many refreshing and exhilarating ideas. Help educators get on Twitter and then be supportive. Tag them in your tweets
Morning info slayer and tech ninja for high school library land.
Q: How do you move Ts past the tunnel vision of "I" to the power of we and a growth mindset?
We are also 1:1 Chromebooks this year.
Candy corn is preferred but I'm not opposed to the harvest mix with pumpkins too!
A1: Find ways to show others that Twitter is about connection, show this power and how it has changed you. Explain the purpose.
I think that is an awesome idea. Nothing like self directed learning. Almost guarantees engagement.
Keep those Qs coming this morning!
Q: Anything innovative happening around you for deep, connected, learning with PD?
We hosted our own Twitter chat last summer from different classrooms during our PD for teachers and staff
A1) Always encourage, read article about having a Twitter Party...make it fun...no pressure
A1 Which is bigger game changer: Twitter or connected learning? I'm all for championing purpose, relying less on particular tool
Oh, and I am a little late at the intro. Sam from KS, 9-10 ELA teacher, love me some Twix!
A1:Showing them the power of twitter! We will have mini Edcamp in our building in a couple of weeks and one session is on Twitter
It's so sad isn't it? Hopefully this is one of them! Connecting w/ amazing educators through social media!
Ker from CT here. Joining a little late...
A1: at my campus we're doing a book study via twitter and encouraging my staff to follow chats like
A1 start with faculty, the plc & PLN https://t.co/yLU0RHS6dE
Q: Where do you find instructional strategies that work?
A1 I have started slowy by sending my teachers ideas and topics I find on twitter. Conversation starter.
Q: how do you increase S engagement and achievement through the use of social media and technology?
Sorry I am late , time got away from me. I am Matt, K-5 Art in TX
visible thinking routines out of project zero at Harvard. Also good protocols at schoolreforminitiative
Q: Staff at my school is having discussions about racism, sexism, etc. How can we get more comfy talking with Ss about this?
If there are a few Ts who jump on and then can talk to the +s, it will help ease reluctant ones into the idea.
Ask myself this everyday!
I am so excited too! Lots of points of view from all diff roles represented! Can't wait! https://t.co/2mFqpaor82
Hello, Lena Marie! I'm so pumped about the book study!
Melissa, 3rd grade from Magnolia,Texas A1: Share everything I've learned!

A1: Bring in one strong teacher at a time so they can share what's working in their classroom. https://t.co/4zpgVphHM6

Q1. How do we elevate the teaching profession in a time when there are less students majoring in education?
Mathematical Mindsets book study starts Monday.
A Twitter party......you hosting? When and what time?
Are we not talking about the same thing?
Honestly Twitter. When you have a great PLN you can find all sorts of ideas.
Same challenge here. Focus on vision. Allow folks to share ideas. https://t.co/5CyoEOT3AJ
Q: How do you move Ts past the tunnel vision of "I" to the power of we and a growth mindset?
Great question! Following for responses!
Good morning ! Hope you're enjoying your weekend. Still need to Vox about our classes working together.
A1: have convos about where & how you got inspiration about things you are doing in your clsrm!
Just loving my twitter connections. Would be lost w/out them!
We just had a great d&i pd on racism and education. We're going to watch and discuss next! https://t.co/bMc8WIw4EU
Q: Anything innovative happening around you for deep, connected, learning with PD?
A1: Ts need to share and open up what we do to the community to foster inspiration, support and excitement in what we do
Sitting right now at an Edcamp and overhead, "so much of the PD I go to is unhelpful." Why is that?
EdCamp style professional learning sessions instead of faculty mtgs have helped cultivate a PLN dynamic.
A1 recognize traditional areas of learning and the new non traditional areas--all areas are important https://t.co/xz7AYOaegH
Q1. How do we elevate the teaching profession in a time when there are less students majoring in education?
The direction we must take to prepare students for Exponential Age requires new leadership understandings? Where do we begin?
Thanks! I think once they get started it won't seem like an 'extra' but it will become a routine.
A1.2: Started a Twitter chat for my school district to try and encourage others to join the conversation.
Let me know when you do a literacy one! LOL
A1: we have asked every administrator to create an account. Teachers have gotten on board too, We follow each other.

A1 pt2: I'm implementing at classroom job of intern to help share our story as well.
Welcome Randall! So great to connect with you here weekly at
A1: “De-standardization?” There are only two ways to assess students - compare to standards or bell curve. I prefer standards
It starts Nov. 1 and is on Mathematical Mindsets.
We have to start with what we can control-relationships, culture of classrooms, schools, etc. https://t.co/VOvsYp43ti
EdCamp style professional learning sessions selected & facilitates by teachers for teachers.
We did a Twitter challenge with one challenge each day to increase Ts on Twitter. I like the bingo idea.
Q1 I'm looking for a randomizer app that I can use to select Ss. Anyone have a recommend?
Good morning, Steve! Keep an eye on Teresa!
Make sure connect with when it comes to Design and depper learning.
A1: Friendly banter about who discovered most informative or inspirational tweet and who has most followers... makes it fun 😊
Trying to engage future Ts who are Ss in our school. DO attended college/career fair and recruited current Ss.
Yes, we assume a lot and modeling is essential! Huh, just like our students!
Thanks ! Always look forward to my Saturday mornings for
A1 Support one another to avoid burnout of those good Ts in the profession now. https://t.co/WJSDo0jPo5
Q1. How do we elevate the teaching profession in a time when there are less students majoring in education?
A few Ts will always abuse the system; it's time to stop punishing all learners for actions of a few. Individuality.
I am working with my building IC right now on this goal! https://t.co/lFeB1IQMzt
Q: Where do you find instructional strategies that work?
Q: How can we teach Ss to become empathetic global citizens? Feel from other's perspectives? https://t.co/Sphx8RBo9N
Q. What can we do to reshape the narrative and shift the conversation about being an educator? What can we do now?
Q:to effectively impact instruction, you have to understand a teacher's belief system- what's the best way to determine it?
Actually we heard the other day how it helped improve a behavior.
That I think could be another PLN for us...I tried...no luck yet...sharing best practices https://t.co/t334WPsivC
A1: have convos about where & how you got inspiration about things you are doing in your clsrm!
Q: How do you influence educators to move beyond programs to create authentic learning. There's a fear of the unknown in many.
a great way to spread the word! We have to be creative!
it is teaching others how to find the balance. So it doesn't take over.
ME?????!!!!!!!!! Why? I am sweet, innocent just engaging in thoughtful conversation....
Yes. I hesitate to put eggs in 1 basket vs. encouraging pursuit of ovearching purpose via any/all baskets
is your building "strongly encouraged" to use tech/social media in the classroom?
We need leaders who can explore the unknown, but hire leaders who exploit the known. How do we learn to embrace pioneers?
2 admin are planning to start a Future Teacher Club w/ monthly meetings/lessons and classroom exposure.
lets give away a STEM kit or T resource each week for Ts if they join us for
We first need to see what we do in our daily lives as tools to teach with.
Huge warning sing that changes need to happen. https://t.co/ETLu6z97tH
Q1. How do we elevate the teaching profession in a time when there are less students majoring in education?
Good morning gentleman! Great as always to dive in with you!
Thinking that collaborative conversations are a way to dig deep into a teacher's psyche.
Saw one of my teachers using that at our Fall Festival. can you help?
Because it's what others want to see not what Ts may need, not personalized or no choice. https://t.co/8U6nO96yoo
Sitting right now at an Edcamp and overhead, "so much of the PD I go to is unhelpful." Why is that?
or I use I Leap Pick a Student, Both work well and students love it.
Sometimes I think this can stem from surface. Many Ts ready for deeper, sustained, learning on a topic. https://t.co/Gpd2dkce4k
Sitting right now at an Edcamp and overhead, "so much of the PD I go to is unhelpful." Why is that?
Can those standards be personalized for student strengths or no?
Let me know about the next one. Me and math=scary situation! LOL
Pre-sunrise here is BC, Canada as well! Great way to greet the day w !
Visible Learning by Hattie, the Hacked series, Amplify is a great resource for tech integration
Absolutely!!!!! I love progressions of learning.
Agree! I so badly want to do more in my clasroom. I've just got to take the leap! https://t.co/Eh5zDpuVbB
Q: How do you influence educators to move beyond programs to create authentic learning. There's a fear of the unknown in many.
We need2 build cultures of trust so that ALL voices are honored &respected so Ss can become emphathetic .
Q: Research is necessary, but research can't teach the art of teaching...how can we teach the art of teaching ?
Q: What are you doing to transform teaching and learning?
We have a fall fair with pumpkin carving. So much fun! Prices for games are reasonable so all can play
Microcredentialing....are any of your districts/states actively embracing it as PD and/or a path to relicensure?
Would love to have admin. on board!
Ts and admins offered variety of options for PD - first session was wed - lots of positive feedback.
Q: What are some ways/strategies you use to push higher level students?
Very true. I can't miss any of your comments!
LOVED doing science fiction with 8th grade and what "could happen".
And, I also want PD to be self-directed! I believe in the beautiful power of a growing educator!
The power of being a futurist is in the connections. Making skils needed deeply connected to who S are.
We started with examples at staff meetings, goal requirement, built in suppport and share experiences.
Take away scaffolding or make it optional.
Maybe the next one! Maybe a fiction book for chat?
Connect w/ talented now alt-cert (former) non-edu industry pros passionate about serving students & families.
I am working towards that with a building # to try and give them a voice and use Twitter positively.
Q: Would love to hear from anyone having success personalizing instruction.
We're encouraged to use tech, but in all honestly I'm someone who tries to drive it and influence others.
I think you could do a great deal with Ss take it to their level of understanding.
That's 👏🏾 awesome! https://t.co/126Gu7iYYJ
2 admin are planning to start a Future Teacher Club w/ monthly meetings/lessons and classroom exposure.
Exactly! Worked on bullying......moving into empathy.......integrating with content and curr.
Very few use SM. There's so much power behind sharing stories and having an authentic audience.
Q: How does your class/grade level support the goal of College and Career Readiness?
That is rolling in my mind. Hence my focus on and collaboration with each other. https://t.co/7ebdMrgnvk
Q: Research is necessary, but research can't teach the art of teaching...how can we teach the art of teaching ?
Observation of effective teachers. See it in action. Blog about our experiences.
Carol ELA Consultant from Long Island popped into .
We use Team Shake to generate random groups. Really easy to use
Use real world phenomena, student created questioning and authentic and personalized unit development https://t.co/sObMmrudUy
Q: How do you influence educators to move beyond programs to create authentic learning. There's a fear of the unknown in many.
We are trying small group learning structures. Top students get to take off on their own level. https://t.co/TP85asmI7u
Q: What are some ways/strategies you use to push higher level students?
Use social media to showcase teaching and learning.
I have created twitter acct for clsrm, so Ss can tweet what they have learned that day. (Exit ticket)
another teacher & I have decided to create instructional/digital videos of strategies that we know work… https://t.co/FiDGjebDLg
Q: What are you doing to transform teaching and learning?
Have you read Big Magic! not fiction but wonderful
I would do PBL year round if I could. With a team it's important to have continuity though.
I wonder if simply starting with the physical design of the classroom can foster a change in thinking-t… https://t.co/eLicO86Sqz
So important given the 4th Industrial Revolution! Schools must cease being academ factories & become… https://t.co/en2BbuVnRk
I have been talking to some of the mentors now about becoming a teacher.
we have started "learning walks" where Ts go in for a few min and en converse later about what was seen.
Any suggestions for convincing district level the benefits to teacher driven PD?
A2 We have to have a balance of the 2 - look back enough to understand the patterns & forward to predict/plan what's next.
Post positive ideas for reform/change/risk taking. Ss & community see more posts about being tired and overworked.
A1 Agree. If we create playground of in classrooms we would be able to explore a new dimension of learning.
absolutely! It's just like our own homes. Design matters!
Several schools have eliminated K-7 Social Studies. It should be required.
Good morning Latoya. This is a powerful Q. On the flip-side there may be an influx of highly educated.. 1/2
The key is always in the content & lesson. Using SM for Ss to share what & how they learned would be more appropriate
Connect with She is awesome at this https://t.co/LDSYbbiJ1E
Q: What are some ways/strategies you use to push higher level students?
A: Learn to tolerate mistakes and fear as long as student safety and learning are maintained. https://t.co/km3VdQQeJd
We need leaders who can explore the unknown, but hire leaders who exploit the known. How do we learn to embrace pioneers?
Now this is a Q. Hard when the gov't forgets they are kids not little bubbling robots.
You should read the book - talks about that issue! Growth mindset focus too!
I am quickly discovering that Twitter is a great way to access people with lots of knowledge!
Re: Students on Twitter - ground rules might be that they reinforce or challenge colleagues before making their next point.
A "Social Justice" committee! That fires me up! https://t.co/j1u6SMWgrJ
our social justice committee does clothing collection and volunteers at soup kitchens.
I have never been there........ I have walked in, but never shopped I should say. New to our area.
If I could, I'd work toward a viable curriculum that is unique and relevant to student needs. https://t.co/cBXY1qTjDO
the easiest way? Strip away programs. Force Ts to base instructional decisions on Ss needs, not boxed curriculum
Great. Continue the work of sparking students to become more empathetic.
Math is just so outside my comfort zone...I try...right ?
Yes, I encourage my teachers to do the exact same thing. It also makes learning visible for the parents!
Using SM to record field trips, or to make a digital journal of what they learned during the week may help engage Ss
2/2 ... as the machines start to replace even the good jobs. We expect there to be lawyers and doctors affected.
Try the style. Let them see the fun and learning that can happen with it https://t.co/ZtbjiPJIUp
Any suggestions for convincing district level the benefits to teacher driven PD?
As a school team, we started with twitter and then we branched out to encourage choice.
We heavily recruit HS music Ss to mentor our MS band. One just started her ed program!
Start small, build grass-roots momentum to beam up to district? Borrow experience & testimonials from neighbors?
I want to try it just for the name! Thanks!
Let's do it! It would be fun to have a chat about sharing best practices....monthly....... that's all we did....
A. I would model it for them, have them work in teams, observe one another
I wonder how we can empower and dignify teachers to locally design schools for ?
What do you think ? Such an important Q https://t.co/iLMrY0BMoK
Q: How does your class/grade level support the goal of College and Career Readiness?
We need people to create easier interface for Dr's to input patient info. or 3D print body parts
PBL provides relevant opportunities to students. Standards can be embedded, topics can change based on stu interest.
Thanks! We always have to start small and work to bring in more and more.
Thanks Cathy let us know if you want us to highlight anything specific.
A1. We have a Senior intern program that brings in Seniors to work with K-5 students and teachers.
Awesome! On my to do list for this weekend!
Thanks! I agree with the start small. Sometimes progress moves so slow! Ha, ha!
So true. We were just talking about this the other day. People listen to everything we say, not just the positive.
Q-How do you keep your staff going after a tough defeat? The climb is rough but it is important.
Free definitely works for me!
Q. As an educator, what keeps you awake at night? What is it you want to see resolved in our field before you retire?
Twitter page I'm assuming? Does it work with a building Facebook page as well? Or does he blog?
We are moving towards IB-MYP curriculum which is focusing us more.
Had not had the chance to welcome you yet! Good to see you friend! Also can't wait to feature your writing soon!
That is a great idea! I would love to see the videos!
I like the ATLs from IB-MYP. They are hanging on my wall.
Just teasing, Teresa! Always love your smiles and tweets to brighten my day!
Q. How do you start an Edcamp style learning within your own staff? Would love to start, but worried about buy in...
agreed! This is all part of my dissertation. To see if SM increases S engagement/achievement.
Q6: What might happen if... we used the WORLD as the classroom? We got plenty of problems!! https://t.co/Mc3V1tMd8C
Our HS focuses on research & teaching Ss how to understand what an authentic source looks like.
establishing it as a norm. Do they use it outside of class?
I agree we are creating jobs for the technically educated. We may get new Ts from nontraditional places
I think you have to first build capacity by getting a critical mass to see it work elsewhere.
At elem level, Ts could do anything tied 2 standard and it was for a couple hrs, not as PD though.
One of our goals at in doing edcamp style is to model the convo you could replicate on campus or in district. Digital edcamp!!!!
Half way in! If just joining --- you create the compelling Qs! Just follow our 4 C's. Personal PD NOW! https://t.co/JU8TuFsHnU
Half way in! If just joining --- you create the compelling Qs! Just follow our 4 C's. Personal PD NOW! https://t.co/pFRIPZ4Znb
start them young with design thinking! My preschoolers are always inventing something for others....
A Held an Edcamp in our school. Collected rave reviews from Ts. Shared with district leaders. https://t.co/P8iDyHPPVI
Any suggestions for convincing district level the benefits to teacher driven PD?
I know! LOL Just teasing back! Love joking with you! (I am undercover in street clothes right now......)
agreed! Has to be applicable and relevant. Can't force it when it's not needed.
Sometimes patience; other times power when leaders shape like-minded catalysts into team of accelerants.
Keep intentions pure and good will happen... https://t.co/QXsdV5W0gC
Q-How do you keep your staff going after a tough defeat? The climb is rough but it is important.
We do edcamp after our year of self-directed prof learning. Everyone prepared to contribute.
It's impossible to teach in the right way with the wrong attitude. The opposite is also true. … https://t.co/Ur0yQROFA2
Trying to incorporate more global connections and thinking. I refer to us as "global citizens".
There is power in a single story. It can start a chain reaction. Don't wait. Go for it. One is better than none!
Get patents involved then? way to keep them informed.
you are being a difference maker! Keep holding the torch high.
No matter where they come from we need passionate Ts willing to allow Ss to take risks in learning
I’m trying to hold two ideas in my head - the demand for teacher-led PD, and the same T’s opposing student choice in homework.
Ts feelings defeated, Ss who might've been missed, improving learning outside of a standardized test https://t.co/FHZEw4i9NQ
Q. As an educator, what keeps you awake at night? What is it you want to see resolved in our field before you retire?
For me.....my Ss (MS) making good choices....want to see them choose positive and good path for themselves.
I so agree! You brighten everyone's day. It's clear you have the same impact on students!
gives a live update at what their children are learning.
This is exactly it. There's safety in programs. I want my S passionate about what they're learning. In PBL it shows!
Good morning Educhat. Lemarr Treadwell, Fresno, Ca joining you.
I want to see the equity problem solved and for people to see the power of collective effort... https://t.co/Pd1zPFzlPM
Q. As an educator, what keeps you awake at night? What is it you want to see resolved in our field before you retire?
Yes...if kids are on the edge of the seat ready to run out the door that is a problem.
I think that makes it so much more meaningful!
Preach! HS is boring when Ts use binders full of old plans. Must change the "plan it once" philosophy.
HMW dignify all work and Ss who don't do to college? Yes to empower teachers!
21% of our Ss are homeless. I want that resolved. Homelessness impacts the learning in every classroom.
A1 You open up the profession by doing away with licensure and opting for credentials mirroring higher education
Thanks Sarah! And thanks for sharing. Let us know if you want to see anything specific. https://t.co/cL9FEIiA4X
Following these guys! They are creating a channel of videos modeling strategies that work. … https://t.co/1ZaftcP5UK
another teacher & I have decided to create instructional/digital videos of strategies that we know work… https://t.co/FiDGjebDLg
Q: What are you doing to transform teaching and learning?
