Meet and chat with colleagues about Universal Design for Learning (UDL) on Twitter! The best hour of professional learning you'll get in 30 minutes. Held the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 9-9:30PM ET.
Welcome to #UDLchat! So glad you are here! Tonight’s theme is Opportunity! Please introduce yourself and tell us about an opportunity that energized you!
I'm Meg. I’m a new school superintendent. UDL provides an amazing opportunity to better meet the needs of all of our learners. Very exiting times in our educational journey. #UDLchat
Jennifer from University of Kentucky. An opportunity that energized me was getting to record a CD with the Cincy Pops orchestra when I was in college. #udlchat
Good evening #UDLchat and our host @BGentilleGreen. I’m Ron Rogers from OHIO. Go Bucks!!!
I consider an opportunity anytime I get to collaborate on something new, relevant and plan-full which helps our students.

A1: I think it is important for our students to recognize that our teachers need variability that UDL offers. It also greatly prepares students for variability in life and the work force. #UDLchat
Kim Johnson from Minnesota. Professor in the Department of Special Education. An opportunity that energized me was to train teachers at a local elementary school on UDL. I will be working with them all year! #UDLchat
A1. #udlchat many schools are moving toward an inclusion model for students with special needs. UDL, when presented properly, levels the playing field for these students.
A1: By providing multiple pathways to convey their understanding of a clear, concise goal UDL dismantles barriers and increases confidence + self efficacy as a result. #PROACTIVENOTreactive#IcecreamTruck#UDLChat
A1: #UDL provides opportunities for all learners by including them meaningfully, by giving opportunities for learners to show what they know in different ways, and by building a strong classroom community. #udlchat
A1: UDL provides opportunities for a variety of learners because Ts are offering Ss content and assessment in multiple ways. Multiple ways= opportunity for a variety of learners! #udlchat
Hey everyone! I'm Miranda from North Carolina. An opportunity that is energizing me is my graduate program at UNC focusing on Educational Innovation, Technology, & Entrepreneurship! #UDLCHAT
A1- Multiple means of everything! Expression, representation...it allows the learner to choose the best pathway for he/she to master the concept. I think it’s empowerment at its finest! #UDLchat
Hi #UDLchat -Ashley from Houston. Energized by the opportunity to share my sons’ UDL journeys with other educators as a real-world connection to the benefits for Ss
The UDL framework minimizes barriers by giving choice where there was not before. One example: participating in a discussion without your physical voice box #UDLchat
No matter the gifting or ability the framework provides opportunities for everyone to shine. Barriers are eliminated and every voice is invited to the table. #UDLchat
A2: UDL minimizes barriers because it validates a multitude of learning preferences. This gives Ss with limited opportunities the chance to shine in a way that is natural to them. #udlchat
By aligning practices, resources, and assessments to the UDL framework, we remove the systemic barriers that once limited the opportunities of our learners. #udlchat
A2 I think the power of UDL is that it empowers our learners. It Often gives voice to those that have never been given opportunities to shine. #UDLchat
I think the framework allows us to embed some really great technology as a multiple means of representation to students who have limited opportunity. For example using VR and AR. #UDLchat
A2: I often feel the framework gives me “permission” to provide tools for all Ss simply because they can help one S. With the tools all Ss can use them to learn in their best way and show me what they know in a way that bestvsuits them. #UDLchat
A: 2 I heard a student say it gives them hope. They feel they have some control for the first time in their life. Their teachers trusts them and offers them choices and friendship. #udlchat

A1: UDL helps build in flexibility and choice for instructors (in online courses) - affording more nimble differentiation, for delivering assessment/feedback, accommodating different teaching preferences, etc #UDLchat
A1: Opportunityif the purpose of the framework...lens for how to structure learning environments to reduce barriers & offer flexible options to foster expert learning (life long)! #udlchat
Datie...operating in my new role as Academic Credit Recovery At-Risk Coordinator is energizing for me. I'm getting to learn new things moving from elementary to secondary. #udlchat
A2: #UDL eliminates barriers for learners who may have had limited opportunities by activating background knowledge, by sharing experiences that can form the basis for learning. We can't teach under the assumption that they already know what they 'should' already know #udlchat

A2- by planning for access in advance, Ss have the necessary resources at the beginning of the lesson instead of things being retrofitted after the fact. #UDLchat
Dropping in for a quick hello, #UDLchat friends! Looking forward to catching the archive. [GIF: Fez from That 70s Show mouthing "I love you" and gesturing a heart with his hands]
And...when they have control in the classroom through UDL and choice, they don't have to fight us to take control back in undesirable ways! #udl4theWIN#udlchat

A2: this question makes me think of the use of technology to do things that would not have been possible without it.I also see equity in the UDL framework; viewing it through this lens and using the framework to proactively and systematically address variability. #udlchat
A3) I have started giving a new group of Doctoral students the opportunity to choose what resources they want to comment on for our discussion time. At their age and stage this is new to them! Fun #UDLchat
A2 #UDLchat By thinking ahead of multiple ways learners can experience content and express learning it will open doors to personalizing the educational experience that had previously been locked. Seeing a pathway that embraces the learner is empowerment.
A3: Our center has begun offering mid-semester student feedback sessions as an option for faculty to make changes BEFORE the semester is over! So simple, yet so effective! @UKCELT@UDL4UK#udlchat

A3: Lots of Google Forms that allow for self-reflection and @itslearning for assignments that allow students to type, audio record, or video record. #UDLchat
A3 I love the fact our administrative team is sending surveys to staff to ensure they are part of the decisions we make. Valuing all voices improves the culture and climate of schools. #allmeansall#UDLchat
A3- debriefing lessons w/Ss (who are Ts in my case), polling for favorite tools & things they want to see in action so that they can go back & try them w/Ss. #UDLchat

You can add image descriptions to Twitter images, but not GIFs. Always good to include those descriptions in your tweets for #a11y. https://t.co/Ih9uO2Ldc0#UDLchat
A3: Opportunities for student voice? It's quite simple...just think "I wonder what my students think?" Then ask them! Create space for them to share their thinking. Make time for active learning! check out some ideas here:https://t.co/F3S4QkNhPF#UDLchat
A3: How do I give my students a voice? Provide them with opportunities to speak and be heard. Exit slips and short surveys are also useful tools in the classroom #udlchat

Love to hear that #UDL is being included in #highered. Gives me comfort knowing my kiddos will still have those options when it’s time for college. #UDLchat
A3: we do a quick reflection at the end of each unit, after any major assignment, any time it feels like Ss aren’t where they could be. Then Ts must take action based on the feedback. When Ss see that part they see their worth. #udlchat
mention of activating background knowledge makes me think of how UDL in conjunction with other instructional frameworks can support ELLs (i did some research into the intersection of the SIOP framework with UDL as part of my TESOL grad program) #UDLchat
A3: building opportunities for PD participants to provide feedback through self ratings and shared reflections (with multiple ways of reflecting - writing, drawing, audio, etc.) #udlchat
A3. I use Nearpod to facilitate a start, stop, continue. Also, student vote with their choice. Do they gravitate to one option more than another? #UDLchat
Well we all need to start--and not stop! :) We need to get off the content area conveyor belt...and be with, with, with, our students and learn alongside their unique brilliance. It's just so simple! And so powerful! #UDLchat
A4: I teach younger students, so we spend a lot of time in the beginning of the year discussing learning goals in student-friendly language. After a lot of modelling they are ready to begin setting individualized goals for themselves #udlchat
A4-I ask Ts to set a learning goal for the PD session @ the beginning based on what we’ll learn. How will you know you were successful when you leave? Keeps them focused & on track. They monitor their own learning #UDLchat
A4: Give students opportunities to experiment with various support structures until they find what works for them. Like reading logs, or story boards, or a voice recording log... whatever works best for them. #UDLchat@BGentilleGreen
Erika from BCSC joining super late because I got distracted by friends and ice cream. 🤷🏼♀️ A4: Help them see where they are, then each student sets goals using shared docs between the two of us. #UDLchat
A4: Share outcomes based on content but also ask participants to reflect on and record their own learning goals through questions and also periodic check-ins. #udlchat
#udlchat A4) after identifying learning intention tied to standard or content delivered, I then ask..what are you hoping to accomplish at end of lesson, presentation, etc. Tech used mentimeter to express own goals
Agreed, I found that college students had a difficult time when given the opportunity to choose how to demonstrate knowledge. They were so used to being told what to do! #UDLchat
And that's a wrap for another amazing #UDLchat! Huge thank you to our moderator @BGentilleGreen. Join us Sept 19 with #UDLrockstar moderator @digitallearnudl... same bat time, same bat channel. 🤘 [GIF: cartoon Batman dancing]
Right?! Often, it's the rule-followers who come to our nation's colleges in droves. They need to know it's ok to make a choice-and even to make a bad choice sometimes! #udlchat
A4. I rarely talk the S’s learning goals with my higher end students. Typically it is from the course’s perspective. I gotta think about how I can integrate and prioritize that conversation. #UDLchat
A4: I ask my college students...why are they are here and where do they want to be at end of the semester...great opportunity for self-reflection and self-awareness #UDLchat
Thanks @BGentilleGreen for riveting moderating--great Qs and paciing--thanks all for conversations! So thrilled I could make it for some of our #UDLchat tonight!
@BGentilleGreen#UDLchat A4 The best way to support students in the creation of their own learning goals is allowing room for curiosity to turn into content that counts in the classroom.
Hello #TxEd 👋🏽👋🏽 Ashley from Houston. It’s been a while (since May to be exact), but I’m glad to be back. Sorry I’m late. I stumbled upon a #UDLchat and couldn’t resist participating
