The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
I think it’s important to find out why they don’t want to participate. Once you find out the why, you work towards partner work then group work. The S May need to observe at first #BFC530
That's a tough question. They are yellow I know that.
My wife rescued them from her mothers garden after her mother past away. they were her grandmothers #bfc530
I believe in the importance of collaboration...a skill that our Ss need, but it MUST be explicitly taught. Perhaps, too often, students are placed in groups and expected to work effectively together. This can be frustrating for Ss and teacher. We must teach WHY and HOW! #bfc530
My students sit with their groups or "teams" on a almost daily basis so working with them becomes natural. I havent had a complaint with in class groups in years #bfc530
Good morning #bfc530 ! Last day of school for me! One exam to give, correct, post all my grades (a dozen Ss submitted overdue work yesterday), turn in keys, then summer vacay!
Habits are hard to break Carl, and since participation in #bfc530 is a good habit, might as well keep it up. Do you guys down there get a long break like us? #bfc530
I agree Chris. Kind of like eating broccoli, kids dont like it, but its good for them. If we just place it in front of them & without encouraging them to eat we shouldnt wonder why they arent. Teachers need to offer rationale & encouragement for group work #bfc530
Scorching temperatures coming after today’s rain! Those temps could last into next week. School year ends after Friday’s PD Day. My wife and I fly our to PEI and Newfoundland on Saturday where temps are much cooler! #bfc530
We can’t assume that Ss come to us knowing how to collaborate. They need explicit instruction and feedback, role-play of various roles in a group, co-created pictures and anchor charts to explain how to effectively work in a group, and plenty of practice. #bfc530
I try to offer choice in how they want to work often which helps to have a balance for introverted Ss who don't love group work, but it's also embedded in our Habits of Work and Learning, which they get graded on, so I try to let them pick the times they work on mastery. #bfc530
@BFC_530 For some students, working in a group feels risky. They may feel vulnerable or insecure. Combat these feelings by proactively building a strong class community from day one. Build a space where risk & mistakes are treasured & accepted. #bfc530
Introverted kiddos or language learners may need time to sit back and observe quietly at first, or to contribute via a “chat” function using #edtech or sketchnote/write/draw ideas instead of blurting them out in a group. All valid forms of collaboration. #bfc530
Yes, that is where I teach, I live up the road from there. You were in Sussex County for your daughter if I remember right. What brought you down 206 into Chester? Just exploring? Did you get to see any alpaca farms here, there are a few in this region #bfc530
@itsmeSpiri recommended a fruit place there.
And I caught up with @bohndrake nearby #bfc530
I saw an alpaca farm north of Newton. they said they have maremmas to keep away the bears

Thrilled that Mary steered me to this revealing post. Men and women educators using Twitter should read it and talk about it. And be sure to follow @doyourhw21. She’s influencing change.

Important study about the power dynamics within twitter use... https://t.co/hFKbJMUWoS Focuses on political reporters but I imagine similar results would be seen in academics/education. @ASCD#njed#aplangchat
Learning to work in a group setting and collaboration skills are necessary life skills so it is not optional. I work with the reluctant Ss to slowly incorporate them into the group work. Baby steps. #bfc530
Not all students are comfortable working within groups. But, that doesn’t mean they can’t contribute! Technology helps keep them connected to the work even when they need a little space. #bfc530
Hope its a great day. Other than Twitter, Im trying to shut my mind down from educational work for a week. Always say that is what I'll do, but it never works, cant stop thinking about teaching LOL #bfc530
Listen. Genuinely hear what they are saying. I don’t say a word until it’s clear they are ok. Hugs help. If I’m crying, I don’t want someone interrupting me or saying “it’s ok” when it’s not. #bfc530
Hey pln! Join us whenever you wake up (not necessarily 5:30) and share your thoughts over the summer. Have questions? Add them to our question bank! #bfc530#redbud132#bthschat#mathchat
One of the first days in class, we practice conversation within groups. I have students scoot desks together, shake hands, and introduce themselves with some fun fact about themselves. Once I know who gets anxiety, I try warning them before they walk in the room. #bfc530
