Jena Ball, CritteKin and NOt Perfect Hat Club creator tweeting from North Carolina, USA
Hello. 7th and 8th grade LA teacher in Connecticut
A1: I grew up surrounded by music and music education and it's an instrumental (heh) part of who I am and what I do
so glad you are with us tonight! Glad to see you again.
Renee White from NC joining for a bit.
Hi Bronwyn - great to have you join us
What arts edu? Was in all girls Catholic schools that didn't offer art. Had 2 wait til college to enroll & by then was behind
They're tweeting... Not sure what the question is though.
A1: Art Edu has always been my taboo subject but as I learn to model risk taking it has started to become a passion area
Interesting topic, but not a strong suit. I might be more of a lurker and questioner for this one.
how does it influence your tech ed?
A1 POSITIVE - i wanted to be a T just like my art T and so I did. To this day I think of her often and try to be like her
A1 loved art whole my whole life & decided to become art teacher. Now I think of myself as an advocate 4 a child's creativity.
Hello Renee great to have you!
really? Strange ...... they are all up .....
A1: I was a middle school music teacher for several years. The impact is of Arts Ed is exponential on students.
A1: My personal experience w arts was overall positive. Took art classes in college for fun. Try to incorporate art into proj
Waves to her favorite Gif friend ;-)
A1a learnt 6 instruments in school, pilate in , tevye in , 4 x ā¦ loved it all!
1a) We had a lot of choices. I took fine arts and drama as electives. I enjoyed them both, but fine arts > drama.
A1: creating artistic representations made the texts come alive in my ELA classes
Thanks Craig. Good to see you too :-)
Why do you think it has been taboo? In our area it's sometimes seen as special or extra not essential
A1: I took art all the way through HS- studio, draw and paint, ceramics, photography- loved my Ts and the classes.
So glad to see you again! Thanks for being here tonight!
Think it's a typo. For me, I'm either blind, too tired to see, or overrun with twitter comments.
A1: I don't remember it being particularly positive, BUT love integrating into my teaching.
Q1: I have taught visual arts and it's one of the most positive/rewarding subjects bc you get to develop creativity
Art is not my forte, but as a T, I challenge myself to get involved in the arts for my Ss sake.
A1: I never really liked school. Music class was all I cared about. It kept me in school.
it takes purposeful planning to pull this off
Am trying to connect with all you arts-interested peeps!
never pushed or promoted positively to me by parents and never been an area of passion
Hi tweeps. Leslie, Instructional Coach in Mexico. Here's my latest art, my photography X Prisma app. https://t.co/ar7zc2XPLQ
A1) When I was S, art ws on cart, not fun, do what I do Now my Ss create their ideas w/lots of glitter https://t.co/iuftsK0uKy
A1 I LOVED art. Lucky that it was part of my schooling from forever. Being good or not I didn't care
Thanks for joining us tonight!
A1 I love seeing my Ss encorporate art into projects
A1 very positive, I had it at home and at school and now I use it as focus for creativity in engineering
A1: Art always a way of expressing myself & encouraged. It was also therapeutic & motivating. Creativity celebrates passion.
A1: curating soundtracks w cover art 4 texts focused my Ss on what mattered in those texts
art was my thing I waited till I got to art class to put in my best effort
Drawing and writing stories were at the core of my being. My mom still complains that I used up all the drawing paper - LOL
A1: I have limited experience but have been working with my arts team K-12 on integration ideas and now I am super excited
we often run into parents that don't see is a "real" career
it is there inside of you, just comes out in a diff. way other than trad. art ways!
Totally! I'm a firm supporter of the aesthetic dimensions of all subjects 100% important goal
A1- Art was my thing, it was my happy safe place in school and parents recognized it as so
Hi
Carl from Avonsleigh Australia
A1 Didn't like art. Don' remember a time that I did.
Yes. Q1 launched a few minutes ago.
A1 positive experience. It helped me realize I am smart in a way that isn't always valued in school as much as other areas
A1: Many Ss find a release during their arts classes, & are able 2 express themselves in a different, safe way!
So happy to hear that! Finding your voice!
hmmmm my notifications column is not working
The thing I REALLY wish I had kept up with was music. I luv to sing & played piano til I was 12, but piano was never fun
Q2 coming up in 1 minute ā¦ā¦ā¦..
A1 Negative experience, I never did want to play that stupid Tonette or whatever it was called, but they made me, no choices
A1b) Neg: when people tell my students something will be hard (eg: algebra) I have to be over the top the other way to counter
So very true, glad to hear that.
Do you campuses have arts specialists to help you with art and music integration?
I think I have an idea! Need to think it through a bit more! :)
Hi Jo - I am having some issues here with Tweetdeck as well and wondering if it is playing slow today ....
I luv that technology is freeing kids to be creative in so many unique ways. Kids struggle becuz compare their work to others
Q2) What access to arts education PD do you have & how does it improve instruction for your students? https://t.co/QyY43SZpGU
I view your Minecraft creations as art! They're beautiful!
but do you appreciate it?
A1b uber-positive. lets ACT shakespeare, lets SING poetry! not quite at dancing level yet!
Obviously you never had a dot matrix printer ....
Oh yes, of course and I am not in the classroom now, but thinking back to 5 years ago there was a massive gap
A1: I loved languages, Literature, Physics and all extracurricular ativities
crazy ideas that are made into reality is what i specialise in
A1 I lack the ability to do art, but I appreciate all forms of art, which is why I LOVE being at a school of the arts
All students from Nursery get specialists for Art, Music and Drama - all separate and a HUGE focus here
same here guys- no notifications on
A1: Its mostly positive, but see Ss who free out when I ask them to draw as part of design. Its about the idea, not the art!
A1: music was HUGE for me, played violin forever.
Q2 next to nothing. I'd like to know how to grade artistic components of projects.
Art is an ideal way to teach BOTH SE and academic skills. It's all about realizing learning=trial & error. No one is perfect.
you just need the right teacher...
YES! Art encompasses many forms from woodwork 2needlecraft/sewing. whatever way WE define it
A2: sadly, none that I can think of, learn on my own.
A2: tapping into local agencies and museums. Most city chamber orchestras requires members to conduct outreach to schools.
Many of our art teachers are still on carts ...
A1 K-12 art education was really not interesting. It presented it in isolation.
LMAO nope not until I got into college :-)
A2 Not a whole lot of options for me where I am now. Iām actually certified to teach Drama as well as English and other things
Sorry if you are missing notifications & tweets - it appears to be a Twitter/Tweetdeck/Hootsuite issue right now
we do something that kills creativity it starts somewhere in late elementary
A2 an open PD policy: find something, ask for funding, often yes. no data on whether it improves instruction but it feels good
Appreciate art? You mean wandering through art galleries? Sure. Depends on gallery, media, style
A2: Very little unfortunately :( And we typically have very few preservice Ts for as well
A2: I have you, my own research and practice, my love of photography, and my imagination and determination. :)
let's just say the image/sound in my mind gets somehow lost in translation when it hits my hands
A1: I recorded 3 records with a band in the early 90s. Used to play them for students. They got a kick out of it.
A2: Twitter & self-research. We are so heavy on reading + writing. My goal is to embed Arts and into current curriculum
My parents still have a half a box of it from when I had my printer ....
A1 later material included the whole social and cultural and economic picture. Much more interesting.
A2: Really anything we can find online. I used as part of a creative cooking unit. Sadly, time was the issue!
A2: Arts Ts get access to develop their passion areas at conferences & workshops but we actively encourage global connections
a1: I've been an a/r/tographer for several years, a teacher for longer, and an artist for life
A2Ts that teach art have PD via their dept.other Ts have to look for it on their own.Would love to see more integration.
A2: Mostly access is only through Twitter or conferences choose & pay to attend. Wish had more provided. ā¤ļø !
Although music not a strength, I sang my heart out! I could hear in my soul and that was ok
I had a little meltdown with an Aide earlier this year who put my students off probability.
trueā¦but my response to the freak out is āIām not an art teacher, so I donāt know good from bad art!ā
YES we want for all Ss to have this if it's not their thing they understand the impact on culture & history
it is getting them to understand that brainstorming has no mistakes. just like to process of Design Thinking
Never too late to start again.
Some students are able to use these areas as a way to "shine" in ways different from another content area!
Research shows the the Arts helps in all content areas.
A2) Art PD...in my dreams! Never had Art PD thru school, do my own art edu learning, usually tech tool https://t.co/1696ZGlTVa
Absolutely. Its about changing the mindset and its something we keep pushing!
A2 as a Social Studies teacher I don't get real Art PD ... would be cool if I could hang out at an art conference
My students use most of their intelligences in every class. Art follows and grows in that format. https://t.co/8Pb7bexciZ
the biggest thing to look for is understanding of concept!
Great, we just like to tell Ss to explore & express it's not about the product as much as it is about the process
I have been working on skwtchnoting also and how to teach it to students.
A2: I live & breathe art-writing, illustration, song, building multimedia stories, websites etc. I infuse all my visits w/art
YEs Focus on reading writing math but I was able 2integrate it in K. PD sources Twitter & colleagues https://t.co/b8XVTfey1s
A2: Twitter & self-research. We are so heavy on reading + writing. My goal is to embed Arts and into current curriculum
A2) Going to look from a different angle. My daughter Bridie studied Art at school but enrolled in education at Uni 1/2
Booo! That makes me very sad
A2.1: I seem to be omitting other arts- my apologies! Music/dance/drama all essentials!
you might be a builder or digital artist - drawing isn't the only form of art
the greatest thing about art, is that it is a response to life using all disciplines.
2/2 Suddenly she became aware at uni of Art she had never been exposed to. Now studying Design and loving it
Q3 coming up in 1 minute ā¦ā¦ā¦..
FANTASTIC!! That's not always the case in the US - art are first to get cut when funding is cut
They LOVE stuff like that! Awesome!
So glad U said this. Art shouldn't exist in a silo. Creativity in all forms should infuse & inform all we do.
yes that is what I do. I assure students I am not grading on drawing skills bc I am not a trained artist myself.
Isnāt SOSE 101 how to use colour pencils?! Thatās what I tell my SOSE teachers.
Isnāt SOSE 101 how to use colour pencils?! Thatās what I tell my SOSE teachers.
I'm at an arts integration school ....
I need to figure out how to integrate conductive paint into my library program.
Q3) What kinds of arts integration activities do you use? And does it bolster student engagement? https://t.co/ELpRvaua3M
I need to break it down so I can teach them. I have a good idea. It just comes so naturally. It's how I think.
we are an American school too and we love it
Art Ts are always looking for ways to integrate, just ask.
Yes! This is real art 2 me. Freeing creativity allows kids 2 take learning beyond 4 walls & apply 2 RL.
A3 creativity challenges 2 sharpen creative minds. Open ended. I think Ss should make/create everyday, in every discipline.
My head. LOL I don't use anything but my own imagination.
A3: I know I am not the best at this. We use art as a choice to share your learning, but I am certain I could be better.
A3 Ss love art. I also use pictionary when we have 10 minutes or so after a test.
A3: Any I can. Drawing, painting, design process, song writing, video producing, photography, etc.
I think we must get past our limited definitions of art & stop teaching it as a separate subject. It should inform everything
A3: We used a ton of design elements when creating the school newspaper.
A3: We go for a STEAM approach and The Arts has become a huge part of everything we do to develop the whole child
Perhaps :-) I'm more inclined to try the cello.
A3: my Ss can draw, sketch.......sometimes draw picture to kick off writing proccess
A3: We do lots of design tasks, not art per se, but they definitely allow for student expression and creativity
Paint that is conductive. You can paint circuits, making animals that light up by attaching lights, etc.
A3: Definitely boosts student envolment & motivation. Ss ā¤ļøchoice & artist choices are even more appealing.
Yep! The same is true of all academic disciplines.
A3 some Ss love charades too to act out vocabulary words or sentences.
As a school it is expected that art is a part of every project/activity ... doing newspaper with drawn Ads
My school independent school w/big emphasis on arts as well as academics Art Music Library Science PE
A3: I do have them create during Hour of Empower, every project has a creation.
okay I'm back on sorry :/
My other school and many schools in my district have art on a cart.
Just my head. LOL My imagination.
Oooo looks like great fun.
A3: Ss are engaged when they love what they are doing - subject area doesn't matter if we can engage students in real learning
A3 See, Think, Wonder from . Take big ideas & let Ss create questions responses instead of consume answers.
upcoming activities will have students making instruments then creating a song using instruments ... about the experience
A3) Interdisciplinary film/video course w/ & STEAM activities, recreate Thriller every Halloween
I find not every child loves art. https://t.co/cRwsVPZwFt
A3: Ss are engaged when they love what they are doing - subject area doesn't matter if we can engage students in real learning
awesome I'm a bit jealous
A3 I've had kids make book projects too in the past. Creative projects are a hit with most Ss.
The NPHC stories & programs are based on belief that kids who feel safe, seen & encouraged learn academics better
It doesn't have to be an Art focus but we give students a voice & choice in their learning & anything is possible
Really started on Designing for a reason this yr. all my Ss are building for community projects.
A3 is great for integrating student art into digital portfolios.
A3: Script writing, acting out cellular respiration. Digital and analog fine arts. Lyric writing and singing. I love !
A3 lots of visual arts based including sharpening analytical skills with paintings and settings ideas of time & place
Yes we try to integrate in all areas of learning. It's great when we kids interests to lead the way https://t.co/ro9kjpSwcK
I think we must get past our limited definitions of art & stop teaching it as a separate subject. It should inform everything
doesn't have to be visual art - could be music or drama - creativity and choice are the key -
Yes, that I agree with that wholeheartedly. https://t.co/rESNz5hysY
It doesn't have to be an Art focus but we give students a voice & choice in their learning & anything is possible
It is also important to realize that this type of creativity is largely intrinsic to STEM.
Thanks for the mention Laura! Really appreciate it. Appreciate your dedication to connecting educators
agreed - we use it as well with 3000 students from Nursery-Grade 12
In creativity used as a basis 4 learning many skills. 4 ex, Ss make hats. Must do the math, handle $, sales & marketing
well said. & all Ss are born w/creative minds, so let them shine as much as possible!
this is why giving them a choice is important. for one isn't necessarily passion for all.
looking the recycled/repurposed ... cigar box banjo ... pvc pipe horn ... maybe design one in the Fab Lab
A3. Personally, I don't like the terms STEAM/STEM/STREAM. I feel like they're similar to the term "Enriched Bread"
So glad you came back! :)
STARR my friend how are you!
Yes, I know some design with objects, like Legos, blocks or other. https://t.co/mJavucjifI
doesn't have to be visual art - could be music or drama - creativity and choice are the key -
. Agreed. based on student passions resulted in a lot of arts integration.
A3 note taking- sketch noting on board - in diff subject Ss impressed I can draw LOL!
totally we have lots of builders I think many people think of drawing when they think art but it's more diverse
Art engages kids on a different level
So very true! love the See/Think/Wonder process! https://t.co/TA4c9eeFrO
A3 See, Think, Wonder from . Take big ideas & let Ss create questions responses instead of consume answers.
Q4 coming up in 1 minute ā¦ā¦ā¦..
IN Lead with Your Heart, Ss create a Kindness quilt (measure, buy fabric, tell stories) and perform a live play based on book
THIS is an awesome way to gets kids engaged in the topic hands on! They probably loved this! https://t.co/DjaNasUENX
Photography as well now that I think about it. https://t.co/gAYoDjmSXm
totally we have lots of builders I think many people think of drawing when they think art but it's more diverse
might b the approach. Sometimes art rooms aren't creative. Myth that art = creativity. Not always...
Great idea would love to see some picts of that!
yes but all children are creative in diff ways
True but art has many outlets. Important 4adults & Sts to see that
Fabulous! When learning translates to RL & Ss get to see their work makes a difference magic happens. Pls share more
right on Jason- step by step matching penguins doesn't equal creativity
Q3: Comm. tech.collaboration projects, traditional to graphic arts, green screen, design challenges-š https://t.co/ne1xCAji2x
A4 exposure to the unexpected, especially people their own age. never teach from a text book!
Saw these in-person, SO beautiful!
Carl is an amazing teacher with lots of fun activities to get Ss engaged.
A4 creative minds need time to develop ideas - give them the time and encourage their efforts
Q4: encourage students to try new things/support all of their ideas even when they are "off target" https://t.co/ne1xCAji2x
A4 I nurture imagination by teaching from a place of emotional engagement. All topics have emotional significance we can evoke
A4: As many have said we need to give a few things: choice, time, and ability to collaborate.
will def share it out ... that activity is scheduled for January-ish
do you use ? great resources for this!
A4: By giving them a voice in their learning and encouraging a growth mindset - mistakes are OK!
A3: Mostly the use of drawing in design. Getting them to use art to convey ideas for products. For plating food.
Had many of my Ss build marshmallow noodle towers this week.
A4: Start in Kindergarten. They are more creative at that age than any other.
how'd it go?? Talk about STEAM
A4 by posing big ideas and letting them chart their own path. I am there to nudge, facilitate & encourage.
Sooo true. Each child is unique & we must help each find his/her way.
Choice is important but can't have too many choices. Can overwhelm.
That's the best learning... when Ss don't even realize that it's work! https://t.co/w0qh9ehQmS
Carl is an amazing teacher with lots of fun activities to get Ss engaged.
doing great. Winding down the summer, preparing for my new job next week. You?
4A) Encourage, listen, let them take charge, there are no mistakes, close eyes & feel it, let your heart speak thru your art
Agreed! Time and space to play with knowledge :)
A4 Open ended questions, stress that just because something is different or unexpected doesn't make it wrong.
A4: By modeling many diff creative options at first & then giving Ss free choice later on & just letting them go.
A4: Let them fail. Over and over again. And then ask them questions, and give them feedback, and do it all over again!
consider adding a bit of ck out
Agree with that as well. It also overwhelms me. https://t.co/LEGqdsO8rT
Choice is important but can't have too many choices. Can overwhelm.
A4: Its about modelling. I let students view my āartā and they are willing to have a go!
A4 getting Ss to use their 'other' hand -then discuss how brain works - fascinating, actually them into learning more
A4 I am ready to experiment with genius hour. I just want to get approval first.
A4 Provide ample opportunity, and options. Being supportive of oneās choice even when not your cup of tea. Be creative w/ them
A4: I used to tall my students that jazz didn't have wrong notes. We called them 'blue' notes instead.
YES!!! CREATIVE CONFIDENCE
A4: I know when modeled and talked through things with my Ss they could see the possibilities.
A4 let Ss explore their interests and passions. Let that drive learning and creativity will follow.
Love that! Did that last year! My Ss will build towers out of post it notes next week!
Agree - they retain 5% by listening and 95 % by doing as they learn! https://t.co/0jRGhp0XxX
So true we must keep thinking of ways to keep levels high! https://t.co/ODhhtQ4olV
A3: Ss are engaged when they love what they are doing - subject area doesn't matter if we can engage students in real learning
My 5th Grs are using empathy to create a project on welcoming Ss new to our campus.
yes do it! Amazing hour of the week! š
So very true in all areas!
While is is likely that they will retain more of what they do, the numbers have been shown to be a myth.
A4: Give them a place to build creative confidence by allowing them to make personal choice that express themselves
All Design Thinking, love it!
A4: promote risk taking, celebrate growth no matter what and how, encourage out of the box thinking!
So many great ideas, thanks to all.
What a great project! What are they doing exactly? https://t.co/1xxWVgI8ut
My 5th Grs are using empathy to create a project on welcoming Ss new to our campus.
did you use and as an extension?
I say imagination needs noodling-we must give Ss permission & encouragement 2 go within 2 get 2 know their own hearts & minds
Interesting that I see a greater adherence to patterns & what is expected among CS than physics.
Q5 coming up in 1 minute ā¦ā¦ā¦..
And they ALWAYS took it up a notch as well. Ss will fly if you see and let them know you want 2 see their ideas.
Q5) How do you advocate for arts integration throughout the curriculum at a campus or district level? https://t.co/zGX5EpnAPY
A4 encouraging healthy risk taking, creating a brave space 4 diverse perspectives.
using their past of being made to feel uncomfortable, using that to create something to help newbies to school.
Wondering takes time. Do we allot enough for this or are we too busy?
was a while ago expl. food & Arcimboldo -Ss made 3d food all invited to make sculptures
I was modeling the "trying" for the kids ... we had an artist in to work with the kids
I was modeling the "trying" for the kids ... we had an artist in to work with the kids
I've had a few discussions about brain, memory, etc. w/ my 3rd grade Ss. Their brains hurt but they got it.
Well...since I'm not in any one school I advocate by making a pest of myself - asking 4 visits & time with teachers.
A5: STEAM!!!!! and Curriculum integration
And getting their feed back on it too. Showing how input is not bad.
A5: collaborating with art or music teachers
A5: Model it, collaborate whenever you can. I'm on our committee & excited to have our 2nd STEAM night this yr.
A5 all children r born w/creative mindset. We need 2 encourage that mindset & let them create knowledge instead of consume it.
I think I maxed out my potential ... at least I tried
A4.M students identify prob & propose innovative solutions - & then co-lead Celebration of innovation. https://t.co/k2TuXLnhpv
I think we need to slow down and allow more time.
A5)Ensure equal time w/"core" sub, provide breadth of exp. at ES/MS and choice at HS. Specialists at all lvls.
& thanks as always for a great chat! It's time for bedtime routine & mommy job. šš
A5: discussing merits of interdisciplinary efforts & the power of creative thinking match what schools are looking to promote.
What fun Jo! A kind of found art :-)
A5: I think we need to look for āorganicā integration. Look for where it fits naturally rather than force it.
something that they felt & understand, & turning it into something (+) 2 help another! Such a meaningful project.
A5: When we write our art curriculum we work with the core teams to connect & of course
Most faculty I facilitate tell me they would like to integrate and yet fewer find ways to do this. https://t.co/cSuhz9Vvrj
A5: STEAM!!!!! and Curriculum integration
Yes, it's time for a movement
Model- connect and involve everyone in the learning community. Parents, community artists, former students...
A5) I promote Ss art, share ideas, tech tools, send videos Ss work to admin, encourage my own kids too https://t.co/s4QbYC9GsF
The struggle is that teams are not often given the time to collaborate in a meaningful way
Some consumption is necessary. It can fuel the creation process.
This is so cool! I love working with clay and then having it decorate their walls.Brilliant.
Hoping 5th grs will pay it forward to other younger grades.
A5 I tell you does a good job of getting arts out there through video
I think thatās true of most things education! Perhaps except in the area of adaptation to change... https://t.co/uRRErmInlk
I think we need to slow down and allow more time.
That is great. I love that it is iterative too. There could very well be several successful ways to do something.
Have you seen the recent (last few years or so) discussion on how he made this painting?
yes. Keeping the integrity of the arts as an equal partner in process.
Willing to bet they will :-)
at 1 school we made external gallery wall even framed images with terracotta & mirror mosaics
Q6 coming up in 1 minute ā¦ā¦ā¦..
I've done walls, but not allowed to be permanent. I love this!
oh shucks thanks! š love what I do that's all
Q6 There has been a recent movement STEM to STEAM. How do you utilize Arts in Sci,Tech, Engin & Math https://t.co/LARzMZqPJI
help me understand #2. How are we categorizing academic vs non-academic?
oh really? pity - the gallery is still there from 1990s!!
Yes, it shows. Love hearing what you are up to. Always fuels my imagination too.
A6 might we shift convo from integrating art n2 other discipline. rather integrate art n2 life. Prepare Ss 4 life, not tests.
A6: How don't you?? without art & creativity & design lacks everything that makes those fields wonderful and engaging!
don't do as much now I'm out of school but still love any opportunity
there are some places where are is unfortunately viewed as Non-Academic :( so sad
Yes and learn to embrace & enjoy it. When I'm writing a new book, I rarely know where it will end. Part of the fun!
A6 arts int. has been around forever. We need focus on arts disruption. The arts are key to disrupting the educational system.
Parent & arts lover here sneaking in toward the end... Great convo!
A6: We use it a lot in technology, but want to see it fit more seamlessly into the STEM subjects. Hard to not see it fitting.
A6: Bringing the expert educators together to plan and construct cross curricular units of inquiry / learning
Well I can always ask. Hard when it's not your school.
Have a great night everyone! Thanks for the chat!
A6 I don't think it's @ stem or steam. We need a focus on thinking. Critical, creative, collective, mindful, empathetic, etc.
A6 ask the arts educators, find points of intersection and bring their expertise (and student work) into teaching spaces!
How might parents get involved? How do we help with arts integration without an arts connection? https://t.co/fv6mc2yz75
Model- connect and involve everyone in the learning community. Parents, community artists, former students...
My background not up on CCSS but from talk w/others, their take has been a test drive culture
