Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
It's great to be back here at #LATICchat! Nancy Sulla - creator of the Learner-Active, Technology-Infused Classroom (#LATIC); Pres @IDECorp; Global Superpower is "future-thinking"; author of:
John from Mexico City where I run an international American school. Happy to be chatting tonight. No school tomorrow because of Day of the Dead #LATICchat
A1 Everyday is a new adventure and new opportunity to see the future through the eyes of our future as they strive to change the world for the better. #LATICchat
A1 I’m inspired to think that I have a hand in changing the world by igniting passion in a ss. Their future is yet to be written! I love that there is a chance someday they will think back and say Mrs Clark helped me find my passion #LATICchat
A2 A LATIC allows S's to reach beyond the confines of the classroom and even beyond the borders of our nation. It provides real world opportunities to collaborate and communicate their ideas. Creating a flater world than a traditional classroom. #LATICchat
A2) In Learner-Active Classrooms, Ss can engage in global problem-solving; use real-time data; and engage with others around the world ... solving global problems. #LATICchat
A2 giving ss opportunities to be leaders in the classroom is critical. We have lots of discussions about how to make the classroom a better place and how to solve problems together. The ss also publish a weekly collaborative newsletter for families #LATICchat
A3 I think courage is easy to build. We do a lot of work around growth mindset and that failure is part of learning but we need courage to move forward. The kids are really latching onto that idea and developing courage to try new and hard things. #LATICchat
What if once per quarter they shared a collection of ideas from the newsletter for MS S's and T's to read and be informed about the great work they are doing? #LATICchat
A3) It would be fun to think about how to directly build intuition ,,, we need some activities. Some skills are built through activities, some through structures, some through facilitation, eh? #LATICchat

Confidence requires some repetitive success in the classroom. Sometimes takes time as we dig into an ALU. But we do celebrate the small victories! #LATICchat
A4 we are working a lot this year on building leadership skills and I think that teaching integrity critical we do a lot of read alouds about characters who are honest and true to themselves. When ss have a strong model they can then understand what the skill means #LATICchat
A4 Integrity is built by taking a position or stance on an issue and defending it in a sound and ethical fashion. I like to create opportunities for debate and discussion that allows for and encourages differing POV. Also for grp wrk S's sign group contracts. #LATICchat
A4) Intuition ...
- have Ss "quick write" a reaction to a prob situation
- have Ss engage in a minute of closed-eye, deep breathing, then open their eyes & write about what they see and think
- have Ss observe a situation and then write about what they think comes next
#LATICchat
Provide opps for S's to make predictions based on info and data they have gathered. S's in class researched the push and pull effects on immigrants during early 1900's then applied the data to predict where and what forces might increase immigration to the USA today. #LATICchat
Great Stuff! I also like to teach that even heroes fail but if they have integrity and good charachter they can learn from failure and overcome adversity. #LATICchat
A6 the WWII ALU which puts Harry Truman on trial for war crimes. Also the Civil Rights ALU where S's develop a Bill of Rights for a colony on Mars. #LATICchat
A6) Sooo many opps for building global citizenship!
Mirrors, Windows, and Doors is an #equity ALU to get Ss thinking about how well the library reflects the audience. #LATICchathttps://t.co/WLW7GjwS91
A6 as I’ve started to make my problems more authentic we’ve focused more on local things but we did do a government ALU last year where the ss learned that not all citizens have a voice in their government and wrote PSAs to urge people to vote #LATICchat
Tonights #LAticChat is about educating Sś to become global citizens. The first HW assignment Sś had in my class this year as part of the priming plan was to craft a paragraph and define what global citizenship meant to them. https://t.co/JNl2aFqExv
Thanks ... it's part of our new series of resources on the IDEportal (https://t.co/giDab8kqx7) on #equity and building equitable learning environments

A7) Peer Expert board positions students to help others by sharing their expertise ... good preparation for leadership and global citizenship. #LATICchat
#laticchat I try to build leadership extensions into most activity lists that encourage Sś to take informed action and engage in civics. The best is when Sś are successful in connecting to the real world and are able to build social capital https://t.co/RfPHPTRjOA
A7 I use many structures to build EF skills that in turn create leadership skills. I believe ss first need to be in charge of themselves and take ownership of their learning #LATICchat
Love the "paper LATICchat" ... we used to have Ts engage in "analog blogs" on paper ... would be fun to have Ss "chat" about #LATIC on paper! #LATICchat
A7 Student led SGML. Students develop many of the super skills and help one another grow as learners and problem solvers in class and out of the classroom in the process. #LATICchat
I find this happens so naturally in extra curricular settings but I struggle to get it off the ground in the classroom. Students are often intimidated by being labeled and “expert.” Thoughts? #laticchat
#laticchat socratic discussions where Sś have varying perspectives #sschat sometimes the featured inquiry sources we share w- Sś is critical in opening discourse. I constantly look for thought provoking articles and encouraging Sś to be brave and not shy away from controversy
Maybe make the "skill" a lot more narrow ... Once a student demonstrates mastery, ask, "you've got this! would you mind helping others who may need your expertise?" then you put their name up on the PE board #LATICchat
You guys rock! So glad to be back here with y'all at #LATICchat ... Love your insights! I hope you'll join me next week for a discussion on standards-based instruction at #LATICchat
